Dear David,
My child doesn’t like to do his homework. We argue with each other over the homework every evening. This is one of our top arguments. What shall I do?
Lucy
Dear Lucy,
As a parent, I also had such a problem. It’s common for many kids to hate their homework. Here’s my advice for you.
★Try to stay calm. The first step is to try to stay as calm as you can. If you get upset and start shouting at your child, you are not helpful in solving the problem.
★Make a clear plan around homework time. Let your child know that you hope that he can finish the work on time. The most important thing is that he tries his best. Some may find English easy, but have difficulty in learning math. This is common.
★ Have a relationship with your child’s teacher. Try your best to build a good relationship with your child’s teacher. Start off at the beginning of the school year and stay in touch as the year progresses.
★ Play the parental role most useful to your child. Every kid needs help. Your job is to guide your child. You can always make suggestions and the teacher’s job is to grade them.

Jess really felt very happy. When he arrived at his seat in the classroom that morning, he found an invitation on his desk. It was from several of his classmates asking him to join them on a camping trip. This was the first time he was asked to join in an out-of-school activity. Why were they asking him now? Nobody seemed to like him. In fact, he was always being so lonely that he drowned (淹没) his feelings with food. As a result, he came to put on a lot of weight, and this gave the kids something more to make fun of him.
Cindy, who was standing near Jess when he read the invitation, went out quickly to say, “________”. Everyone was pleased that Jess thought that was true. But there was no camping trip. The whole thing was made up.
At first, Cindy thought it was fun. But later, when Jess told her that he was going to buy a sleeping bag with his savings, Cindy had a second idea. She knew that Jess’s family had little money, and she hated to see him spend his savings on something he would never use. Cindy also hated to tell Jess the truth. People are so busy these days that many people have no time to cook. This becomes a problem, because most families love home cooking. The food tastes good and warm, and a family meal brings everyone together. In some families, meals are often the only time everyone sees one another at the same time.
Another reason people enjoy home cooking is that it is often a way of showing love. A parent who makes some cookies is not just satisfying a child’s sweet tooth. She or he is sending a message. The message says, “I care about you enough to spend an hour making cookies that you will eat up in 15 minutes if I let you.”
There is also something about the smell of home cooking. The smell of home cooking pleases people of all ages. It makes most of us feel good and loved—even if we are the ones doing the cooking. “Next time you smell a cake baking, stop for a moment and pay attention to your mood (心情).”
11. Why do fewer people cook now? ________
A. They like to eat in restaurants.
B. Many people are too busy.
C. Many people don’t like cooking.
12. A parent spends an hour making cookies ________.
A. just to satisfy her or his child’s sweet tooth
B. only to send a message
C. often to show her or his love
13. The writer thinks the smell of home cooking ________.

B. makes us happy
C. makes us pay attention to our mood
14. What does the underlined word “satisfying” mean here?
A. 令人生气 B. 使人满意 C. 填满
15. What’s the main idea of the passage? ________
A. Family meals are important.
B. How to make cookies.
C. Homemade cookies taste better.
D
The environment situation is becoming more serious. Watching news about the environment on TV can make people feel terrible. The problems seem so big that it's difficult to imagine how persons can do anything about them. Rebecca Hosking, however, thought differently.
Rebecca is a wildlife camera woman and she was filming a documentary for the BBC in the Pacific Ocean when she saw something that made her cry: quite a lot of dead birds that had died because they had eaten some plastic that is thrown into the sea each year. Beaches that used to be beautiful were covered with plastic toys, bottles, pens—every plastic thing you can think of.
Rebecca decided she had to do something. Back at home she thought about what she could do to help deal with the problem of throwaway plastic. In her hometown of Modbury, she asked local shop owners to stop using plastic bags in their shops.
Plastic bags are used everywhere in the UK. The numbers are amazing. The UK uses nearly 17,000,000,000 plastic bags each year. And the bags can take a very long time to break down because they are chemical rather than natural, so each year the sea and the environment become more and more polluted.
To Rebecca’s surprise, the shop owners agreed and Modbury became the first no-use plastic bag town in the UK. Instead, shops offered cotton bags or paper bags. Other towns around UK followed Modbury’s example and no longer use plastic bags. It won’t deal with all of the world’s environment problems but it shows that there is something we can do and that one person can make a big change with a strong enough decision.
16. From the first paragraph we may know ________.
A. people are clever enough to do something about the environment
B. people have no idea on how to protect the environment
C. people are doing a lot to protect the environment
17. Rebecca cried one day when she ________.
A. saw quite a lot of dead birds
B. was listening to BBC news
C. found the ocean was polluted
18. According to the passage, Rebecca ________.
A. works as an actress in films
B. comes from a town in the UK
C. has never used plastic bags
19. The passage mainly tells us that ________.
A. people usually feel terrible while watching TV
B. we can do something about environment problems
C. plastic bags are used in all towns except Modbury
20. The best title for the passage might be ________.
A. The dead birds B. Plastic Bags C. The Town of Modbury

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分30分)
第一节 阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)
Exam time is the most stressful period of the year. You have worked all school term on your classes and now it’s the time to prove what you have learned. With so much at stake (处于成败关头), it is easy to get stressed about your exams. However, with the right amount of hard work and focus you can pass your tests with ease!
When I was in school, I used to get very stressed over my exams. So did my friends. Some people stopped eating and others ate too much! Some gave up and others burned themselves out! The most important thing to remember when studying is not to feel frightened! Take the middle path—stay calm, eat healthily and get a rest. Pushing yourself too hard is just as dangerous as not studying enough. A tired, overworked brain is just as useless as a lazy, empty one!
So, what should you do? Arrange a time each day for study and a time for relaxation. You may have less time to relax than usual, but you still need to let your brain rest for a few moments and get plenty of sleep. If you are tired, information will not stick in your memory. Finally eat healthy foods that fuel your body and mind.
It does no good to think too much about your exams. Some students may think that the rest of their life depends on them. That’s not true. Instead, just view the exams as another difficulty you will overcome. You have overcome all kinds of difficulties in your life so far. With the right amount of work and focus, you will pass your exams with flying colors! High school is right around the corner!
46. What is the most stressful period of the year?

47. How can we pass the tests with ease?

Her close friends would be angry with her. What could she do now?
6. The underlined words “make fun of” in the passage most probably means ________.
A. be proud of B. make friends with C. laugh at
7. What would happen if Cindy told Jess the truth?
A. Jess would go on the camping trip himself.
B. Jess would be thankful to his classmates.
C. Cindy might have trouble with her friends.
8. If Jess really bought a sleeping bag, ________.
A. everyone else would also buy one
B. it would be the best in the class
C. he would have it for no use
9. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Everybody would go camping in the class.
B. Jess had few friends in the class.
C. Jess joined in many out-of-school activities.
10. “________” can be the missing sentence in the passage.
A. It’s time for us to get ready for our camping trip.
B. We are not supposed to do so.
C. The trick worked.
【答案】6. C 7. C 8. C 9. B 10. C
原文最后一段“Cindy also hated to tell Jess the truth. Her close friends would be angry with her”明确提到如果Cindy说出真相,她的好朋友会生她的气,对应C选项“Cindy might have trouble with her friends”。
【8题详解】
原文第二段“But there was no camping trip. The whole thing was made up.”以及第三段“she hated to see him spend his savings on something he would never use”表明根本不存在露营活动,Jess买到睡袋也派不上用场。
【9题详解】
结合第一段“This was the first time he was asked to join in an out-of-school activity…Nobody seemed to like him. In fact, he was always being so lonely”,可推知Jess在班里几乎没有朋友。
【10题详解】
根据后文“Everyone was pleased that Jess thought that was true…At first, Cindy thought it was fun”可知,此时恶作剧刚刚成功,Cindy还没有产生悔意,她出来是告诉同伴恶作剧奏效了。

【答案】16. B 17. A 18. B 19. B 20. B
