B I have been living next door to Mrs. Cary’s house throughout my entire life. At the age of ninety-five, the gentle elderly lady passed away, after which her family arranged an estate sale to dispose of her personal possessions. Every corner of her house was familiar to me: the squeaky staircase, the dining table marked by my childhood toy, and the ceramic bowl she used to feed birds. On the day of the sale, crowds of strangers wandered around, hunting for vintage items at low prices. They casually picked up Mrs. Cary’s teacup, books and furniture, focusing merely on their prices rather than the emotions behind them. I felt a sorrowful sense of loss, for these ordinary objects had witnessed over six decades of her peaceful life. Every morning she would sip tea from that chipped cup, observing wild birds by the pond. Driven by nostalgia, I climbed up to the silent attic and discovered boxes of letters bound with delicate ribbons. They were love letters from her late husband Bob, who had departed decades earlier. As I read through them, I could sense the profound affection between the couple. They had once planned to grow old together and plant roses alongside the pond. The auctioneer soon informed me that the family had decided to preserve these letters, regarding them as irreplaceable treasures. Eventually, I purchased nothing but a tiny ceramic bird for merely three dollars, identical to the one Mrs. Cary had placed on her windowsill. Now it sits on mine. Whenever I glance at it, memories of the kind neighbor and our precious days together flash into my mind. An estate sale represents far more than the trade of old items. It is a farewell to the past and a quiet transfer of warm stories between strangers. Every object carries a unique story and a hidden life, worthy of our understanding and appreciation. 24. Why did the author feel sorrowful at the estate sale? A. She couldn’t afford the desired items. B. The possessions were sold cheaply. C. The house was badly damaged. D. The articles’ emotional value was ignored. 25. What can we infer about Mrs. Cary from the passage? A. She valued ordinary happiness and daily rituals. B. She contacted friends via handwritten letters. C. She lived with her husband until her death. D. She made a living by feeding birds. 26. What did the author buy from the estate sale? A. A chipped teacup. B. A box of old letters. C. A ceramic bird. D. A decorated ceramic bowl. 27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Stories Hidden in Old Letters B. An Unforgettable Estate Sale C. Ways to Preserve Precious Memories D. The Life of a Respectable Neighbor C In 1971, Richard Nixon launched a “War on Cancer” inspired by the success of the Apollo program, which had demonstrated the power of collective efforts in advancing science and improving public health. At that time, people held high hopes for a quick cure, believing that the same spirit that put astronauts on the moon could also conquer cancer once and for all. However, cancer remains a major health challenge that touches nearly every family — every adult is either directly affected by the disease or knows someone who is — and it has become one of the leading causes of death worldwide, second only to heart disease in terms of its impact on global health. Despite the great challenges, progress in cancer control has been steady and remarkable over the past decades. The age-adjusted death rate from cancer has been declining year by year, and this achievement does not come from a single major breakthrough but from countless small advances in screening technologies, treatment methods, and public health efforts. For example, childhood leukemia, once a deadly disease with little hope for recovery, now has a high survival rate of more than 80% in many countries, thanks to continuously improved medical technologies and more effective targeted treatments. Prevention is widely regarded as a key part of the fight against cancer. Quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise, and taking regular health screenings have all been proven to be effective in reducing cancer risks. Anti-smoking campaigns in many regions have helped significantly cut down on smoking-related cancers, while more affordable medical care and advanced diagnostic tools have made early detection and timely treatment more accessible to people from all walks of life. In addition, new scientific advances like genetic testing and immunotherapy continue to offer new hope, with international cooperation in cancer research accelerating the pace of progress. Though challenges such as high treatment costs and uneven access to care remain, the overall trend is positive, bringing new hope for a future free from cancer’s threat. 28. What inspired Richard Nixon to launch the “War on Cancer” in 1971? A. The high death rate of cancer worldwide. B. The success of the Apollo program. C. The discovery of effective cancer treatments. D. The public demand for a quick cancer cure. 29. Which does not explain the decline in age-adjusted cancer death rate? A. The development of treatment methods. B. Advances in cancer screening. C. Improvements in public health efforts. D. Better genetic testing technologies. 30. What does the author think is key to fighting cancer? A. Collective wisdom in advancing science. B. International cooperation in research. C. Prevention through healthy habits and screenings. D. Reduction of cancer treatment costs. 31. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of fighting cancer? A. Pessimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Neutral. D. Optimistic. D In the core of Shenzhen’s Luohu District, a remarkable environmental transformation is taking place. The Yulong Landfill, once a towering “garbage mountain” left idle for over two decades, has become China’s largest full-scale landfill excavation (挖掘) and surface restoration project. Local residents, who once avoided the area due to unpleasant odors and health concerns, now watch with anticipation as the garbage heap is turned into a symbol of environmental progress and urban renewal. The Yulong Landfill, opened in 1983 and closed in 2005, was one of Shenzhen’s earliest simple waste disposal sites. It accumulated about 255 million cubic meters of waste. As the city expanded rapidly, the landfill, once on the urban edge, was surrounded by residential and commercial buildings, becoming an environmental hazard with groundwater pollution, methane leakage and unpleasant odors. This affected residents’ quality of life and hindered the city’s sustainable development. In 2024, Shenzhen launched the 2.17-billion-yuan Yulong Landfill Remediation Project to fully excavate and relocate the waste. It aims to remove garbage, reclaim land and set a new standard for urban environmental management. Professional engineers and experts ensure the process is scientific, efficient and eco-friendly. To minimize environmental impact, the project uses advanced technologies: a large canopy to contain dust and odors, aerobic pretreatment to stabilize waste, and real-time monitoring. Every step is supervised to avoid secondary pollution and protect residents’ health. Excavated waste is sorted: combustibles are incinerated for electricity, inert materials recycled for construction, and other waste safely treated. This turns waste into resources, embodying circular economy and green development. By 2026, the site will be restored and turned into the “Shanshui Yuntai Digital Innovation Valley” for AI and life sciences, turning an environmental liability into an economic asset. It will attract enterprises and talents, boosting local development. This project shows Shenzhen’s commitment to sustainable development. It combines technology and forward planning, offering a blueprint for cities balancing economy and ecology, and sets an example for global green governance. 32. What problem did the Yulong Landfill bring to local residents? A. It caused much traffic noise. B. It affected their daily life greatly. C. It took up too much living space. D. It worsened the city’s public safety. 33. Why were advanced technologies used in the project? A. To speed up the excavation process. B. To reduce the cost of the project. C. To promote the development of new technologies. D. To avoid secondary pollution and safeguard residents’ health. 34. What does the underlined word “liability” in paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Burden. B. Resource. C. Footprint. D. Advantage. 35. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The history of the Yulong Landfill in Shenzhen. B. The challenges of landfill remediation in cities. C. The transformation of a “garbage mountain” into an innovation valley. D. The importance of environmental protection in urban development. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 The 48-Hour Rule: A Reality Check for Your Goals When pursuing long-term goals, it is easy to let time slip away without real progress. Instead of taking action, we often take breaks or let off-days pile up. 36 It requires you to examine your actions over a 48-hour period to see if they align with what you claim to want. The concept is simple: Imagine someone followed you around for 48 hours. What would they see? Based on what you do throughout the day, would they be able to name the goals you’re working towards? 37 If you claim you want to run a marathon but spend days napping or scrolling through social media, the disconnect is obvious. This happens because thinking often replaces doing in our brains. 38 For example, researching training plans, telling friends about your goal, or following fitness accounts can release dopamine — making you feel accomplished without actually moving forward. According to Keisha Saunders-Waldron, a counselor, most people overestimate their efforts and underestimate wasted time. “The goals live in their head as a beautiful future version of themselves, but their current behavior doesn’t match,” she says. This is where the rule acts as a wake-up call. 39 40 Doing so will help bridge the gap between the “future you” and the “current you.” By focusing on small, actionable moves rather than grand intentions, you become more aware of your routines so you can stop holding yourself back. A. Would they believe your goals are what you say they are? B. The 48-hour rule is a viral TikTok trend designed to solve this. C. Mental engagement often feels just as productive as actual effort. D. Why not find a partner to monitor your daily activities attentively? E. It shifts the focus from “what I want to be” to “what I actually do.” F. To better adopt the rule, you can make a detailed plan and stick to it. G. However, thinking about a goal is not the same as working toward it. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Growing up in Tehran, Iran, Kimia Koochakzadeh-Yazdi 41 a deep passion for music. Five of my seven closest friends had moved in the past year. I just knew if I stood on the end of my drive, waving goodbye to a sweetheart sister one more time, my heart would break. Enter Michelle. I met her at church, and she was a master at making friends. Her husband had been in the Navy, and his civilian job brought many transfers, too. Moving was a way of life for her, and she rose to the challenge. “Want to come over for lunch today?” Michelle asked. We were scraping glue from eight-foot tables. Day one of Vacation Bible School and the craft room had gone wild. “Today?” I asked. I barely knew Michelle. She’d been around church for a while, but our paths hadn’t crossed until VBS. “Sure,” she said. “I’ll make pizza. The kids can play.” Michelle had three young sons and a daughter. I had three young sons, too. Sounded like a good fit. But I was tired and the morning had been full. “Come on,” she said, as if tapping my thoughts. “I’ll make you an iced tea. I have a nice porch and we can sit.” Sold. My sons and I went to Michelle’s that day, and it took about ten minutes for us to feel like we’d all been friends for a hundred years. Michelle had that way about her. And by the time the boys and I loaded into our van and headed home, I felt as though I’d been given a sweet gift. Michelle eased some of the hurt of those relocated friendships. And I didn’t even have to try to find her. And as I got to know her better, I got to know many others too. Michelle was different from anyone I’d ever met. She had a lot of friends — older friends, friends in their twenties, single, married, friends with no children, friends with a half-dozen kids. I’d always played things safe, choosing friends who were just like me, but Michelle reached far. I was in awe of her. She’d more than filled a blank in my life. 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Then came a sad day. The day she told me she was going to move. And that’s when I saw Lily, a young mother. Students’ Preferred Ways to Practice English Listening According to the survey, 85% of students prefer watching English movies to practice listening, followed by 70% who enjoy listening to English songs. Half of the students choose listening apps, while only 25% attend English lectures. The results show that students tend to choose entertaining and easily accessible methods over more formal ones like lectures. This preference likely reflects their desire for a relaxed and enjoyable learning experience. From my perspective, while fun activities are beneficial, students should also include structured tools and activities like apps and occasional lectures. This balanced approach helps build listening skills more comprehensively and effectively. 第二节(满分25分) 【参考范文】 Then came a sad day. The day she told me she was going to move. My heart sank, instantly recalling the heavy ache of losing my other friends. I felt the familiar urge to withdraw, to protect myself from the impending pain of another goodbye. “It’s just a new chapter,” she reassured me, adding that distance couldn’t break our bond. More importantly, she urged me not to retreat into my shell again, squeezing my hand and whispering, “Don’t be sad. Just like before, someone new will come into your life when you least expect it. ” Her words lingered, challenging me to trust the cycle of friendship rather than fear the loss. And that’s when I saw Lily, a young mother. She was standing awkwardly by the church bulletin board, clutching a crying toddler and looking utterly lost, much like I had felt years ago. Instead of retreating into my grief over Michelle’s departure, I took a deep breath, walked over with a warm smile, and channeled the very spirit Michelle had instilled in me. “Hi, I’m here to help,” I said, offering to show her around. As Lily’s face lit up with relief, I understood Michelle’s greatest gift wasn’t just her friendship, but the lesson to keep my heart open, to reach out and to continue the circle of kindness. 听力原文 Text 1 M: Excuse me, I’m done. Can I pay by WeChat or Alipay? W: Either is fine. Just scan the QR code you prefer. M: Alright, I’ll choose Alipay then. Where’s the QR code? W: It’s right on the counter over there. Text 2 M: Hello, Mrs. Smith. This is Tom. There’s something that I want to discuss with you. Are you available tomorrow morning? W: Ur...I have to attend a lecture at that time. You can come to my office next Tuesday. M: Alright. Text 3 M: Everything is OK? W: Yes. I’ve fixed up all the things. And thanks to myself. M: What do you mean? W: Well, you might have offered to give a hand, instead of just sitting there being a couch potato. Text 4 M: I was hoping that we could see Tony at the meeting today. W: He was planning to come but then his mother-in-law had an accident and he had to take her to the doctor. Text 5 M: Hello, Alice, this is John. Is Paul there? W: Not yet, John. He phoned me from his office 10 minutes ago, saying he was going to reserve a table for us three in person on his way home. Text 6 M: Adrienne, we are talking about your family. Can you describe the people in your family? Like, what’s your mother like, and your father? W: OK, well, let me start with my mother. I’m hoping she doesn’t listen to this, though, maybe. My mother is very interesting. She has a great sense of humor and she’s a very kind woman, a very generous woman. She’s also not afraid to say what she is thinking, which is a quality I admire about her very much. M: What about your father? How would you describe your dad? W: My dad is probably the nicest man you’ll ever meet. He’s very kind, very generous, very warm-hearted and he’s really a good guy and I love him very much. M: And actually I met your father and he’s a very big guy. W: He is. My dad’s very tall and takes up a lot of space. It’s true. Text 7 M: So, honey, what are you going to cook tonight? W: I’m not sure yet. There’re a couple nice restaurants in our neighborhood, so let’s go and grab something to eat there. M: So, are you going to go and actually eat in the restaurant or are you just gonna bring it back? W: Maybe let’s eat at the restaurant. I don’t feel like doing dishes either. M: You could use disposables. Just throw them away, right? W: Not good for the environment, Todd. Text 8 W: So, Greg, you are quite a world traveler, I hear. M: Yeah, I love traveling. I’ve been to probably around, I don’t know, 20 different countries. I’ve lived in Thailand and South Korea and United Arab Emirates, and four different parts of Japan. And of course several different places in the U.S. W: Well, for somebody who’s going to travel for the first time, what type of advice would you give them, in case they get lost? M: Ah, getting lost, that happens all the time. You have to prepare for that. One of the first things I do whenever I get to an airport is to see if I can get a map from the information center. When I go to a hotel, I ask for more detailed information about the area. When I want to go somewhere, I ask them to write the destination in the local language, and also I practice my pronunciation with them, and sometimes I’ll, almost always actually, get a business card or a match book from the hotel to where I’ll be returning and then I go off on my merry way. W: Well, it sounds like good advice. Thanks Greg. M: You’re welcome. Text 9 W: Todd, what kind of movies do you like? M: I love comedy movies, and for me the most important thing about a movie is, does it have good dialogue, does it have good writing, and actually I don’t like big Hollywood movies.
