One night when I was in the eighth grade in a school in Los Angeles, I saw something on the news. It was about a group of homeless people sleeping outside in the cold. They didn’t have a warm and comfortable place to stay. That really worried me.
So I decided to start a club. The goal was to raise money to help the homeless. I called it the Rock Club as I decided to make beautiful paintings on rocks and sell them. There were only five members when I first started the club. But the number quickly grew to twenty. It was unnecessary to ask people to join the club, because people came up to ask me if they could do anything to help.
We spent all of our free time painting animals, flowers and even the names of sports teams on the rocks. We went around the school to search for teachers and students and hoped they could buy our rocks. By New Year’s Day we had raised thirty-three dollars and then we decided to give the money to a homeless pauper. We were so happy that we could help the homeless by ourselves.
A few days later, our club’s story appeared in the newspaper. We all felt proud that we did something great and people began to pay more attention to the needs of the homeless in our town. Our school decided to start a program, just for kids to help the homeless.
Something, as simple as some rocks and paintings, made me know that we’re never too young to do good things and every little thing helps to make a big difference.

The world’s very first mangrove center (红树林中心) was set up in Shenzhen. This center is really important. Its main job is to help China and other countries look after and protect mangroves all over the world.
So, what are mangroves? Well, they are special plants and they grow near river mouths and in wetlands. They are like nature’s bodyguards for the coast. They hold the soil (泥土), and it stops the land from turning into a desert. Also, they do an amazing thing for our earth: They help to slow down global warming. In fact, the size of mangrove forests in China has been growing. Back in 2001, there were only 22,000 hectares (公顷) of mangroves in China. Now, that number has gone up to 30,000 hectares.
Let’s take a look at Futian Mangrove Park in Shenzhen. It’s right in the middle of the city. This park is like a big rest stop for birds. After flying for a long time, birds come here to take a break. The park is not just for birds. It’s also a place for people. They can see how beautiful nature can be.
