Some distant US Parks, from Alaska to American Samoa, are kept well
away from the crowds which may take a little more exploration to find. Here are
four of those kinds of parks.
Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve
Unlike any other national park, this large park is entirely above the Arctic
Circle ()In the northern park during winter, the sun doesn't rise for
nearly a month;in summer the sun doesn't set for nearly two months. The park is
similar to the wonders of the Great Plains before settlement.
Hot Springs National Park
This park is centred over 43 hot springs and 26 miles of hiking trails. Before
1921,Hot Springs had become a destination for curing health issues such as
nervous disorders. In addition to bathing, visitors come to tour eight elegant, late
Victorian-era bath houses-many in the Spanish colonial style.
Indiana Dunes National Park
With its 15 miles of shore under the constant forces of Lake Michigan's
wind and waves,Indiana's only national park has high sands from which visitors
can see the skyline of Chicago across the lake.Paths lead through the park's
wetlands, flat lands, and forests, home to more than 1,100 species of vascular
plants. The park also shelters more than 60 historic structures, including houses
from the 1933 Chicago World's Fair.
National Park of American Samoa
Closer to New Zealand than the United States,American Samoa (sacred
earth)is the most distant and usually the least visited in the National Park System
The park protects a paleotropical(古热带区的)rainforest and more than350
species of native birds.A third of the park is ocean water, with 250 coral species
and 950 species of fish.

Atl02 years old,the American neurologist(神经学家),Howard Tucker,
has lived a life so singular that it earned him a Guinness World Record as the
oldest practicing doctor.Though he officially hung up his white coat at 100,he
remains as active and engaged as ever.
Today,he lectures future physicians at Case Western Reserve University in
Cleveland,Ohio,and consults on medico-legal cases."Retirement,I think,is the
enemy of longevity(长寿),”Dr.Tucker recently told Today. You have to have
some purpose in life and get up in the morning and know what you're about."
Even after the hospital where he worked shut its doors in 2022,ending his
medical practice at 100,it hasn't prevented Tucker from returning to clinical
work."If it weren't for the closure,I'd absolutely still be seeing patients,"he
said."Nobody wants me at my age-but I'll keep trying."
His enthusiasm for life has caught the public imagination, especially
through What's Next,a documentary about his life produced by his grandson.Dr
Tucker credits his longevity not just to his parents who lived to 84 and 96 but
also to his lifestyle choices, including a sensible diet and a happy life. His daily
routine reflects that philosophy. He snowshoes in the winter, walks on the
running machine for at least four kilometers a day,and eats a mostly clean diet.
Dr.Tucker also says it's important to keep the brain motivated."If you retire
from your work, you should at least do something as a hobby,"he explained.
"You need a motivation for the brain daily."

In Spain, children in the Eixample area of Barcelona have a new way to get
to school on Fridays-they ride their bikes. The program is called "bicibus"or
bikebus”.
The Eixample bike bus begins around 8:25 every Friday morning. The path
it will follow is always posted ahead of time,so everyone knows where to join.
The bicibus starts off with just a few students and parents, with more and more
joining as it travels along.
Most kids ride their bikes, and others ride scooters (or use skates.
Instead of riding in bike lanes or on sidewalks, the bicibus takes over the
entire street. With music playing and bike bells ringing, the bicibus feels like a
party.Nine-year-old Marfa Pitarch says,"The best part of the bicibus is that we
ride along and pick up my friends and we ride together."
The Eixample bicibus goes to several schools. When students reach their
school, they leave the bicibus and park their bikes. Some parents have made the
bicibus the way they get to work on Fridays.Because these are busy streets, the
local police are helping stop traffic by riding in front of the bicibus and behind it.
Parents are hoping that the bicibus will help change ideas about how people
can get around in the city. They want the city to create wider,kid-friendly bike
lanes. They point out that the bicibus also helps cut down on pollution.Pictures
and videos of the Eixample bicibus got a lot of attention when they were posted
on social media sites. Many people point out what a simple idea it is,and how
easy it is to get started.

A.The music along the road.
B.The freedom to ride scooters.
C.The fun of riding with friends.
D.The route of the bicibus.

A.The guard from the police.
B.The participation of parents.
C.The size of the bicibus.
D.The requirements on riding
31.Which can be the best title for the text?

Repeated exposure (to heatwaves, which are growing more frequent
due to climate change, may speed up ageing, particularly among manual (
workers,a new study warns.
Although previous research showed heatwaves had negative effects on the
health of older people,it primarily focused on short-term exposure to constant
heat. The new study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, assessed
the potential long-term impact of heatwaves on health and ageing.
Researchers analysed data from 24,922 adult people with an average
biological age of 46 years to assess how heatwaves influenced ageing. They
defined rapid ageing as the difference between biological and actual age and
assessed its association with heatwave exposure.Biological age shows how old
your body seems based on its actual health and condition, which can be different
from your age in years. If your body's age is higher than your actual age,you are
more likely to get sick.
By analysing patient data from 2008 to 2022,the researchers discovered
that the more time people spent in heatwaves, the more their bodies aged.
Though the participants appeared to adapt to heatwave conditions over the
15-year period, the harmful health effects did not disappear.Manual workers,
rural residents and people in communities with fewer air conditioning units were
more likely to be impacted by heatwaves on ageing, the study found.
The findings suggest people living in places that experience more days of
high heat show greater biological ageing on average than those in cooler regions.
"Here we analysed data from 24,922 adults and used linear mixed models
混合模型)to show heatwaves speed up ageing,”the researchers said.
The above findings carry significant applications and can be used to inform
practical actions. Thus, based on the research findings, researchers are urging
governments to make sure everyone is equally protected from heatwaves and to
help communities handle them better, especially among at-risk groups.
32.What makes the new study different from previous research?
A.It has a larger and diverse research team.
B.It studied a much larger group of participants.
C.It examined heat's immediate effects on people.
D.It focused on the long-term impact of heatwaves
33.Who is most affected by heatwaves in terms of ageing according to the
study?
A.Office workers in air-conditioned buildings.
B.People living in cold northern regions.
C.Those who do physical work outdoors.
D.Young adults with good medical care.
34.How did researchers prove that heatwaves speed up ageing?
A.By asking people how old they felt.
B.By testing new cooling technologies.
C.By studying people's biological age data.
D.By measuring body temperature during heatwaves.
35.What's the author's attitude towards the study's conclusions?
A.Indifferent.
B.Critical.
C.Doubtful.
D.Favorable.

First Aid for Choking(室息):The Heimlich Maneuver
Choking occurs when food or an object blocks the airway.A choking
person cannot speak, cough effectively,or breathe, and may grab their throat.
Without immediate help, choking can lead to serious harm or death.36
If you see someone choking, stay calm and call emergency services right
away. You should also call for emergency help while checking the person.Ask
others nearby to help call for professionals while you check the situation.A
choking person often cannot cough strongly, may turn blue,or show signs of
struggling. The situations are too dangerous.37 If they can still cough
hard or talk, encourage them to continue trying to clear the blockage. But if they
cannot cough or breathe well, act fast.
For a conscious adult or older child, the Heimlich maneuver is usually the
best method.38
Stand behind the person, wrap your arms around their
waist, and make a fist with one hand.Place the thumb side just above the belly
button and below the breastbone.Grasp your fist with the other hand and give
quick upward and inward thrusts.Repeat until the object is expelled or breathing
returns.
Be gentle but firm during the process.
.39
If the person becomes
unconscious, lay them down carefully, call emergency services again if needed,
and start CPR if trained.
40 Lay the baby face down on your forearm, support the head
and neck, and give up to five firm back blows between the shoulder blades
骨).If necessary, turn the baby over and give up to five chest thrusts(冲击/按压)
with two or three fingers.Keep switching until the object is cleared or help
arrives.
Learning these skills can save lives.Being prepared makes a huge difference
in emergencies.
A.The Heimlich Maneuver doesn't always work.
B.Therefore, learning first aid for choking is vital
C.For young teenagers,a different set of steps is required
D.This helps prevent damage to the ribs (or breastbones.
E.So it is important to act quickly and correctly in such situations.
F.However, the above steps are not suitable for babies under one year old.
G.This method uses quick upward and inward pressure to force the object out.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇
完整的短文。
The first time I was told to join the school choir(合唱团),I refused outright.
I was a boy who hid in the library, believing that reading was the only thing that
made sense. The noise of a group, the closeness of others-these things made
me uncomfortable. My music teacher,Mrs.Wills, did not scold me for my
refusal.Instead, she just looked at me with a kind of quiet patience and said,"A
single note is beautiful, but it is lost in the air.A harmony gives it a place to
live.
I did not understand her words then.To me,singing in a group meant losing
myself.I thought my voice would be covered by the louder, better singers.I was
afraid of sounding weak.I was afraid of standing in a crowd. So,every Tuesday
afternoon, while the others gathered in the music room,I stayed in the empty
library, listening to the distant sound of their warm-ups echoing through the hall.
Then came the announcement of the annual winter concert.Mrs.Wills came
to find me again. This time, she did not ask me to join. She handed me a letter.
"This is for you,"she said."Read it,and then decide."
I opened the letter in the quiet corner of the library. On it was a short note:
"We are missing one voice. The sound is not complete. We are not asking you to
sing for the audience;we are asking you to sing for us-because a choir is not a
collection of stars, but a constellation ()Without you,we are just a broken
circle."
At the bottom of the letter were signatures-messy,small,but sincere. It
was signed by every single member of the choir.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That night,I couldn't sleep, the letter lying on my bedside
table.
The night of the concert arrived, and as we stood backstage,I was
trembling.

Life in the Future
As science and technology develop, life in the future will be greatly different from what it is today.
First of all,our environment will be more pleasant, because electricity will be produced from
clean energy instead of coal.Secondly, our cars, which may run not only on the road but also in
the water, will be controlled by robots. In this way, traffic accidents will be greatly avoided.
Additionally, some new medicine will be developed so that people can live longer. As a result,
living to be 120 may be very common.
In conclusion,I think life in the future will be much better than it is now.
Paragraph 1:
That night,I couldn't sleep, the letter lying on my bedside table. The moonlight turned those
messy signatures into silver promises.I kept reading the line:"We are missing one voice."For the
first time,it struck me that my silence wasn't protecting me;it was hurting them.I imagined the
choir practicing without me,that"broken circle"Mrs.Wills had mentioned.Overwhelmed by a
strange courage,I sat up.I looked at my reflection in the dark window and hummed a single note.
It sounded small and shaky, but it was real.At that moment,I decided I would rather be a small
part of something complete than a whole lot of nothing alone.
Paragraph 2:
The night of the concert arrived, and as we stood backstage,I was trembling. The lights felt too
bright, and the crowd sounded like a dangerous ocean.I wanted to run.Just then,Emma, the girl
who stood next to me,reached out and held my cold hand."Don't worry,"she whispered."We've
got you."When we walked onto the stage and the music started, something magical happened. As
I opened my mouth,my weak voice did not get lost.Instead,it was wrapped in the warmth of the
others.I was not a solo star,but I was a vital note in the chord.When the song ended,I realized I
had not lost myself.I had finally found my place in the constellation.

W:Oh,that's surprising. Can you give me your order number please?
M:Yes.it's 1049
W:Well, let me check our records.I've got down that you wanted 13 pizzas.Just...
M:Did you say 13?I ordered 30 not 13.No wonder we haven't got enough
W:I'm very sorry about that.So you're missing 17 pizzas,aren't you?
M:That's right.
W:How about sending you all 30 this time? And they will all be hot.
M:That would be great. How to deal with the 13 ones we have here?Shall we give them back?
W:No,you keep them and we won't charge you for them. It's obviously our mistake.
M:Thank you very much.
W:Thank you for your understanding,Mr Cox.We apologize for the mistake again.Bye.

【原文】M:Can I ask you a favor??
W:What is it Sam?
M:Well,I was just wondering if you could help me with my history lessons because I've been
absent for three days.
W:Sure, why were you absent for so long?
M:I was pretty sick after my trip to London,so the doctor suggested that I should not attend
classes for a couple of days in order to rest, and my father helped me ask for sick leave.I decided
to ask for your help because you always get good grades in history.
W:I'm sorry to hear that you were sick,Sam.Don't worry,I'll help you out.Where should we
start? What is the last topic you have in your notes?
M:Let me see.I do recall that the last notes I have are about the wars between Athens and Sparta.
I missed pretty much everything that came after that period in history.
W:Okay, there is a lot of information to cover then.
M:So what time is convenient for you?Then I'll come to your home,say 6 p.m.?
W:We'd better start an hour later because we usually have dinner at that time.
M:Okay.
