If so, you’re in luck: the British capital happens to have an incredible collection of bookshops. Daunt Books Are you going on a trip and want to read a fiction or nonfiction book set in the place you’re headed? This bookshop arranges books by country, so it’s easy to find anything by place. (83 Marylebone High Street. Monday-Saturday: 09:00-19:30; Sunday: 11:00-18:00.) Foyles Books Dig, if you will, the picture: four miles of shelves holding up to 200,000 books. This legendary (传奇的) bookshop is impossible to leave empty-handed. It was once listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest bookshop on the planet. (107 Charing Cross Road. Monday-Saturday: 9:00-21:00; Sunday: 11:30-18:00.) Hatchards In the year 1797, this London bookshop — the oldest in the city today — first flicked on its lights. It stocks an excellent selection of fiction, nonfiction, history and other genres. (187 Piccadilly Street. Monday-Saturday: 09:30-20:00; Sunday: 12:00-18:30.) London Review Bookshop There’s an excellent selection of history, philosophy, politics, new fiction and many other genres here. Plus, there’s a nice cafe in which you can crack open that tome (巨著) for the first time and start reading. (14 Bury Place. Monday-Saturday 10:00-18:30; Sunday 12:00-18:00.) 1. Which bookstore was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records? A. Daunt Books. B. Foyles Books. C. Hatchards. D. London Review Bookshop. 2. What is special about Hatchards? A. It has a long history. B. It has 200,000 books. C. It has a cafe. D. It has both fiction and nonfiction books. 3. Which place should you go to if you want to enjoy reading with a coffee? A. 83 Marylebone High Street. B. 107 Charing Cross Road. C. 187 Piccadilly Street. D. 14 Bury Place. B 2. A 3. 根据Foyles Books的部分“This legendary bookshop is impossible to leave empty-handed. It was once listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest bookshop on the planet.(这家传奇书店不可能让你空手而归。它曾被列入吉尼斯世界纪录大全,是地球上最大的书店。)”可知,被列入吉尼斯世界纪录大全的是Foyles Books。故选B。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据Hatchards的部分“In the year 1797, this London bookshop — the oldest in the city today — first flicked on its lights.(1797年,这家伦敦书店——如今是这座城市最古老的书店——首次点亮了灯光。)” 故选A。 根据London Review Bookshop的部分“Plus, there’s a nice cafe in which you can crack open that tome for the first time and start reading.(此外,还有一家不错的咖啡馆,你可以在那里第一次翻开那本巨著开始阅读。)” D。 B Losing my job, I am depressed nowadays. My son has lost his admission to a good school. We have moved from a big house to a smaller one to reduce our living expenses. My wife has a lot of extra stress. On top of that, her father died a week ago, which has added fuel to the fire, putting our family in a worse situation. And now I have had an accident, too! In these conditions, I have two mental choices: either to feel depressed and keep thinking about my problems, losing my peace of mind and affecting my family life; or replace my negative (消极的) thoughts with super mental powers that depend on self-confidence, positivity, and keep applying for new jobs with a positive attitude. I choose the second option because I believe that the pain I am experiencing today will strengthen my character. My strengths will then improve my confidence and make me a successful man one day. I understand that time does not stop and does not remain the same. I understand that good and bad days are part of the package called life. While good times make me happy, bad times strengthen the ‘inner’ me. I believe in the quote which says that God takes men into deep waters not to drown them, but to clean them. I also believe in the four spiritual powers; one of which says that whatever is happening is the best thing that could have happened. After two months, I got a job which is very exciting, full of professional exposure and offers a nice salary. Time has healed my wife’s mental stress due to the death of her father, although such a loss is irreplaceable. My son and daughter have got admission to a good school. 4. What does the first paragraph suggest? A. The family once lived in a small house. B. The author is in a good situation. C. The family is in a terrible situation. D. The family is in danger from other people. 5. What does the underlined word “accident” in the first paragraph refer to? A. The author was involved in a car crash. B. The author faces difficulties in mental choices. C. The author is suffering from great work pressure. D. The author’s house is burning. 6. Why does the author choose to be positive about life’s challenges? A. He thinks it will reduce his stress. B. He thinks that will make him more powerful, confident and closer to success. C. He intends to get over all the challenges in his life. D. He expects to have the experience of real life. 7. What happened to the author after two months? A. His son and daughter dropped out of school. B. His wife got well from her sickness. C. He received plenty of help from other people. D. He obtained a satisfying job and everything turned better. C 5. B 6. B 7. 根据第一段中“Losing my job, I am depressed nowadays. My son has lost his admission to a good school. We have moved from a big house to a smaller one to reduce our living expenses. My wife has a lot of extra stress. On top of that, her father died a week ago, which has added fuel to the fire, putting our family in a worse situation. 根据第二段“In these conditions, I have two mental choices: either to feel depressed and keep thinking about my problems, losing my peace of mind and affecting my family life; or replace my negative (消极的) thoughts with super mental powers that depend on self-confidence, positivity, and keep applying for new jobs with a positive attitude. (在这种情况下,我有两个心理选择:要么陷入沮丧之中,一直纠结于自己的问题,从而失去内心的平静,影响家庭生活;要么用源自自信、积极心态的超强心理力量来取代那些消极的想法,并以积极的态度继续寻找新的工作机会。)”可知,第一段中划线的单词“accident”指的是作者在心理选择上有困难。故选B项。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“I choose the second option because I believe that the pain I am experiencing today will strengthen my character. My strengths will then improve my confidence and make me a successful man one day. (我选择了第二个选项,因为我坚信我此刻所经历的痛苦将会塑造我的性格。随着时间的推移,我的优点将会增强我的自信心,最终使我成为一个成功的人。)”可推知,作者选择积极面对生活挑战是因为他认为这会让他更强大、更自信,并且更接近成功。故选B项。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“After two months, I got a job which is very exciting, full of professional exposure and offers a nice salary. Time has healed my wife’s mental stress due to the death of her father, although such a loss is irreplaceable. My son and daughter have got admission to a good school. (两个月后,我找到了一份非常令人兴奋的工作,这份工作能让我充分接触专业知识,而且薪资待遇也不错。时间帮助我妻子因父亲去世而产生的精神压力逐渐恢复了平静,尽管这种失去是无法弥补的。我的儿子和女儿也成功被一所好学校录取了。)”可知,两个月后,作者得到了一份满意的工作,并且家里的情况都变好了。故选D项。 C Knowing how to read, write and talk in one language is enough for many people. They prefer to focus their energy on other things that improve their lives. Scientists, however, continue to confirm that bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize. First, it’s good for a child’s brain. Learning a second language improves their academic achievements. Many studies have shown that children who learn a foreign language get better grades at school. Bilingual children also display a better facility in their native language. Their grammar, vocabulary and spelling skills are stronger than those of single-language speakers. Children who learn a second language become expert problem-solvers and creative thinkers. That’s because their brains are constantly working to sort out which language to speak and when. Studies further show that bilingual teens are better at multitasking. Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language. Ben Mazor of Montreal speaks English, French and Hebrew. He says, “Kids’ brains are like a sponge (海绵). They absorb everything. It comes to them so easily while they’re young. So why not give them the chance to learn another language?” A number of studies show that bilingualism is valuable to the brain later in life. Scottish researchers did a study using data from 835 native English speakers, who took an IQ test at the age of 11. They were tested again in their 70s. Researchers then compared the tests. Those who spoke two or more languages had obviously better cognitive (认知的) abilities. Dr. Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, “Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive decline.” So,who would refuse the benefits of learning a second language? 8. What does the underlined word “facility” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Ability. B. Interest. C. Taste. D. Method. 9. According to paragraph 3, what may parents like Ben Mazor do? A. Learn foreign languages by themselves. B. Spend more money on home schooling. C. Involve kids in foreign language courses. D. Help kids absorb knowledge like a sponge. 10. What has the Scottish researchers proved about bilingualism? A. It extends one’s life. B. It improves test scores. C. It cures brain disorders. D. It slows mental ageing. 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Learning Betters Human Brain B. Bilingualism Shows Great Advantages C. Language Opens a New World to Kids D. Bilingualism Leads to Academic Success 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. 故选A项。 根据第三段中“Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language.(多语父母明白学习多种语言的好处)”及Ben Mazor说的话“So why not give them the chance to learn another language?(所以为什么不给他们学习另一种语言的机会呢?)” Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, ‘Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive decline.’(该研究的合著者Thomas Baka博士总结道:‘我们的研究结果表明,双语对对抗与年龄相关的认知衰退具有保护作用’)”可知,苏格兰研究者证明,说双语能减缓精神衰老。 根据全文内容,结合第一段中“Scientists, however, continue to confirm that bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize.(然而,科学家们继续证实,双语能力,即流利地说两种语言的能力,比许多人意识到的好处更多)”可推知,本文主要讲述研究表明,说双语有很多好处,故“Bilingualism Shows Great Advantages”是最佳标题。故选B项。 D The Internet has become an essential part of our daily lives. It has transformed the way we communicate, access information, and do business. One of the most significant aspects of the Internet is its impact on education. Online learning platforms have emerged as a popular alternative to traditional classroom-based education. These platforms offer a wide range of courses from various disciplines. Students can enroll in courses offered by top universities and institutions around the world without having to be physically present on campus. This flexibility allows individuals to learn at their own pace and fit their studies around their other commitments such as work or family. Moreover, the Internet provides access to a vast amount of educational resources. There are countless e-books, research papers, and educational videos available online. Students can use these resources to supplement their learning, gain a deeper understanding of a subject, and explore different perspectives. For example, a student researching a historical event can access primary sources, historical documents, and expert analyses from different countries and time periods. Another advantage of the Internet in education is the opportunity for global collaboration. Through online discussion forums and group projects, students can interact with peers from different cultural and educational backgrounds. This not only enriches their learning experience but also helps them develop cross-cultural communication skills and a global perspective. However, the Internet in education also has its challenges. One of the main concerns is the quality and reliability of the information available online. With so much content being uploaded every day, it can be difficult to distinguish between accurate and inaccurate information. Additionally, online learning requires a certain level of self-discipline and motivation as there is no face-to-face interaction with instructors to keep students accountable. Despite these challenges, the role of the Internet in education is likely to continue to grow. As technology advances, new and more innovative educational tools and platforms are being developed. It is up to educators, students, and parents to make the most of the opportunities offered by the Internet while also being aware of its limitations. 12. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The Internet has completely replaced traditional education. B. The advantages and disadvantages of the Internet in education. C. Online learning platforms are the best way to study. D. The importance of global collaboration in education. 13. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT an advantage of online learning? A. Flexibility in learning pace. B. Access to a large number of educational resources. C. Guaranteed high quality of online courses. D. Chance for global interaction. 14. The word “reliability” in paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ______. A. trustworthiness B. popularity C. variety D. complexity 15. What can be inferred from the passage about the future of the Internet in education? A. It will face more challenges and decline in usage. B. It will be replaced by new technologies soon. C. It will keep developing and play an even more important role. D. It will only be used by a small number of students and educators. B 13. C 14. A 15. 通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段中“One of the most significant aspects of the Internet is its impact on education. (互联网最重要的一个方面是它对教育的影响)”和最后一段“Despite these challenges, the role of the Internet in education is likely to continue to grow. As technology advances, new and more innovative educational tools and platforms are being developed. It is up to educators, students, and parents to make the most of the opportunities offered by the Internet while also being aware of its limitations. (尽管存在这些挑战,互联网在教育中的作用可能会继续增长。随着科技的进步,新的、更具创新性的教育工具和平台正在被开发出来。教育者、学生和家长应该充分利用互联网提供的机会,同时也要意识到它的局限性)”可知,文章主要讨论的是网络在教育中的优势和劣势。故选B。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第二段中“This flexibility allows individuals to learn at their own pace and fit their studies around their other commitments such as work or family. (这种灵活性允许个人按照自己的节奏学习,并使他们的学习适应他们的其他承诺,如工作或家庭)”可知,网络学习具有学习进度灵活的优点;由文章第三段中“Moreover, the Internet provides access to a vast amount of educational resources. (此外,互联网提供了获取大量教育资源的途径)”可知,网络学习可以获取大量教育资源;由文章第四段中“Through online discussion forums and group projects, students can interact with peers from different cultural and educational backgrounds. (通过在线论坛和小组项目,学生可以与来自不同文化和教育背景的同龄人互动)”可知,网络学习提供了全球互动的机会。而文章第五段中“One of the main concerns is the quality and reliability of the information available online. (其中一个主要问题是网上信息的质量和可靠性)”可知,网络课程的质量并不能得到保证。因此,C选项“Guaranteed high quality of online courses (网络课程的质量得到保证。)”不是网络学习的优点。故选C。 【14题详解】 词句猜测题。由文章第五段中“One of the main concerns is the quality and reliability of the information available online. With so much content being uploaded every day, it can be difficult to distinguish between accurate and inaccurate information. Additionally, online learning requires a certain level of self-discipline and motivation as there is no face-to-face interaction with instructors to keep students accountable. (其中一个主要问题是网上信息的质量和reliability。每天上传的内容如此之多,很难区分准确和不准确的信息)”可知,主要关注点之一是网上信息的质量和可信度、可靠性,reliability的含义时“可靠性、可信度”,即能否被信任。A. trustworthiness可信度;B. popularity受欢迎程度;C. variety多样性;D. complexity复杂性。故选A。 由文章最后一段中“Despite these challenges, the role of the Internet in education is likely to continue to grow. As technology advances, new and more innovative educational tools and platforms are being developed. (尽管存在这些挑战,互联网在教育中的作用可能会继续增长。随着科技的进步,新的、更具创新性的教育工具和平台正在被开发出来)”可知,网络在教育中的未来将继续发展并发挥更加重要的作用。故选C。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 People hate packaging. And, yes, there’s a lot of bad and wasteful packaging out there. ___16___ When it comes to protecting and dispensing (分发) food, the right package can greatly reduce waste. Here are a few examples. Packaging keeps the meat fresh. We throw away a fifth of the beef we buy — the equivalent (等量) of 8 million cows each year — often because it goes bad before we cook it. The solution? ___17___ Case-ready packaging can lengthen that shelf life to up to 21 days. If the meat you bought isn’t going to be eaten within a few days, case-ready packaging is the better choice for the environment. ___18___ This dairy waste can be avoided with packaging technology such as Tetra Pak (利乐包装纸盒), which is commonly used in Europe and Asia to keep milk from spoiling, even without refrigeration. Recycled or not, Tetra Pak is a good environmental bet because it can lengthen the shelf life of milk up to nine months. ___19___ Once again, the environmental benefit of the food-protection technology outweighs the harmful impact of the packaging itself. Packaging Fixes Sticky Situations. ___20___ One example of waste-reducing packaging is the concept project shown from designer Drew Stanley. He designed a peanut butter jar made of a soft material which can be turned inside out and scraped (刮掉) clean, avoiding sticky food sticking to your fingers. A. Packaging protects milk. B. Using Tetra Pak packaging. C. But packaging isn’t always the enemy. D. We should pay attention to the rubbish produced by packaging. E. Scientists have developed packaging that can keep refrigerated meat fresh for weeks. F. It can reduce the need for refrigeration and the amount of milk that goes wasted. G. Food left behind in jars and bottles makes up a surprising amount of waste. C 17. E 18. A 19. F 20. And, yes, there’s a lot of bad and wasteful packaging out there.(人们讨厌包装。是的,有很多糟糕和浪费的包装。)”说因为浪费,人们讨厌包装。而空格后的句子“When it comes to protecting and dispensing (分发) food, the right package can greatly reduce waste.(在保护和分配食物时,正确的包装可以大大减少浪费。)” 【17题详解】 根据空格前的句子“We throw away a fifth of the beef we buy—the equivalent (等量) of 8 million cows each year—often because it goes bad before we cook it. The solution?(我们扔掉了我们购买的五分之一的牛肉——相当于每年800万头牛——通常是因为它们在我们烹饪之前就变质了。解决方案?)”可知,空格处的句子应该提到防止牛肉变质的解决方案。所以E项“Scientists have developed packaging that can keep refrigerated meat fresh for weeks.(科学家们已经开发出一种可以使冷藏肉类保持数周新鲜的包装。)” 根据下文的内容“This dairy waste can be avoided with packaging technology such as Tetra Pak (利乐包装纸盒), which is commonly used in Europe and Asia to keep milk from spoiling, even without refrigeration. Recycled or not, Tetra Pak is a good environmental bet because it can lengthen the shelf life of milk up to nine months.(使用利乐包等包装技术可以避免这种乳制品浪费。利乐包在欧洲和亚洲通常用于防止牛奶变质,即使没有冷藏。无论回收与否,利乐包都是一个很好的环保选择,因为它可以将牛奶的保质期延长到9个月。)”可知,该部分主要是说利乐包对牛奶的保护作用。所以,A项“Packaging protects milk.(包装保护牛奶。)”填入空格处,可以作为该部分的主题句,符合语境。故填A项。 【19题详解】 根据空格后的句子“Once again, the environmental benefit of the food-protection technology outweighs the harmful impact of the packaging itself.(再一次,食品保护技术的环境效益超过了包装本身的有害影响。)” 所以,F项“It can reduce the need for refrigeration and the amount of milk that goes wasted.(它可以减少对冷藏的需求和浪费的牛奶量。)” 【20题详解】 空格后的句子“One example of waste-reducing packaging is the concept project shown from designer Drew Stanley. He designed a peanut butter jar made of a soft material which can be turned inside out and scraped clean, avoiding sticky food sticking to your fingers.(设计师德鲁·斯坦利展示的概念项目就是减少废物包装的一个例子。他设计了一种用柔软材料制成的花生酱罐,可以翻转过来刮干净,避免粘稠的食物粘在手指上。)”提到了设计师Drew Stanley设计了一种新的方式来解决罐装食物的浪费,由此可推知,空格处应与罐装食品造成浪费有关。G项“Food left behind in jars and bottles makes up a surprising amount of waste.(留在罐子和瓶子里的食物造成了惊人的浪费)”填入空格处,符合语境。 Michael Todd wore the same clothes every day for the first three weeks of school. Inside were clean shirts and shorts, plus a brand-new pair of New Balance sneakers.  Todd was blown away. “I was very ____32____,” he said. “Shocked, completely.”  Todd got much more than new ____33____. Spending hours on cellphones harms health — eyesight suffers most, with many students getting nearsighted due to long screen time. Also, relying on calls or texts cuts face-to-face talks with relatives and friends, weakening real connections. Worse still, cellphone addiction hurts studies. Students often get distracted by games or social media and thus make their grades drop fast. They also have no time for exercise, which weakens their bodies and reduces energy for daily life. Therefore, parents and teachers must act. Proper limits on cellphone use can help students focus on studies, protect health, and rebuild meaningful relationships with those around them. 词汇积累 缺点:downside→drawback 因为:due to→owing to 依靠:rely on→count on 减少:reduce→decrease 2. Students often get distracted by games or social media and thus make their grades drop fast. Students often get distracted by games or social media, which makes their grades drop fast. 1】It’s widely known that cellphones are common among students, but their downsides stand out. B Losing my job, I am depressed nowadays. C Knowing how to read, write and talk in one language is enough for many people. Bilingualism Leads to Academic Success D The Internet has become an essential part of our daily lives. People hate packaging.
