Today there are 6.4 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion. There are many people to feed. We need more and more food.
One way to produce more food is growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983, scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic (遗传的) material. Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified (转基因的) foods, or GM foods.
By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. Scientists make plants which are strong against plant diseases (疾病). They can also help in our diseases: a kind of rice will be grown, for example, which stops people becoming blind.
Rich countries produce GM foods because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.
GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are. Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them because they are unnatural. They may feed people, then hurt them or their children later. But both rich and poor countries are interested in their uses, and they are not going to go away. In 2050, we may think differently about them.

A. 6.4 B. 12.5 C. 18.5 D. 20.5

“On the very first day of 2024, I saw the snows of Kilimanjaro,” said Xu Zhuoyuan, a 17-year-old mountaineer from Hunan. Xu climbed the tallest peak (山峰) in Africa on Jan 1st. She even stood on the top of Mount Qomolangma in May, 2023.
Four years ago, she went on a family trip and passed by Mount Siguniang in Sichuan. Feeling drawn to its beauty, she decided to try climbing it. She fell in love with mountaineering right then and there.
For the next few years, Xu did hard training. She went to climb peaks over 5,000 meters and did daily physical exercise like running, swimming and rope skipping (跳绳). All that hard work got her ready for the big difficulties she would face on Kilimanjaro.
Above 4,000 meters on Mount Kilimanjaro, the climate (气候) is similar to a desert, with a big temperature difference. The whole climb took seven days, during which Xu faced terrible weather such as rain and strong winds. Staying warm and avoiding heat loss were the main difficulties.
This climb was also a learning experience for Xu. She was climbing with Xia Boyu, the first Chinese climber to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma with a prosthetic (假肢的) leg. “Every time I felt like giving up, just seeing Xia was enough to inspire me to keep going,” Xu said.
Looking ahead, Xu has set great goals for herself. She plans to climb other highest peaks in other continents by the time she’s 18.

D
Growing up isn’t easy. Sometimes, it can be a real “pain”. We often have to do something that others want us to do. Sometimes we can’t do what we like. We might feel sad, scared, or helpless. But if we look back at these “pains” with a positive view, we’ll see that these “pains” finally turn into gains (好处).
It’s true that we’ll face many challenges and pains during our life, but we shouldn’t let them stop us from following our dreams. We need to face them bravely.
As a young girl, my parents forced me to do many things I didn’t like. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time, I hated music and I also hated them. But now, I’m so glad they encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has really made my life better in many ways. I now understand they just wanted me to have a better future.
Life needs growing pains to be interesting. They make our days meaningful. We all go through them. They are just part of life. Each pain makes us stronger and smarter. If we realize these pains are just small bumps on our road to success, we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!
So, the pains we face are really gains that help us get better and ready for the good things ahead.
66. What will happen if we view growing pains positively?
A. The pains will appear. B. We can do what we like.
C. The pains will turn into gains. D. We will feel sad or helpless.
67. How does the writer feel about her music-learning experience now?
A. Thankful. B. Worried. C. Angry. D. Tired.
68. Why does life need growing pains?
A. To help live easily. B. To make life meaningful.
C. To keep people young. D. To force us to be talented.
69. How do you understand the underlined word “bumps” in Paragraph 4?
A. The aims we have had. B. The ideas that can help us.
C. The difficulties we face. D. The chances we should catch.
70. Which is the best title for this text?
A. Growing Is a Pain B. The Road to Success
C. Dreams During Growing Up D. Growing Pains and Gains

Because of this, some folk traditions are changing or being lost. The Chinese view their traditional culture as an important part of history. “The valuable traditions should be protected,” he said.
To help people learn about China’s cultural heritage (遗产), the members made a website. Its members visited Chinese villages. They took pictures and noted down details (细节) about the old art forms there. They also took videos of local people. In these videos, the locals create art and share their culture. Then the project members put these videos on the website.

根据空后面的句意his neck was much shorter than the others’可知,这是Alex发现的事实,故应选B。
But his mother told him that he was special. She said it did not matter how short or long his neck was可知,Alex的妈妈说他是特别的,脖子长短并没有什么关系,这是安慰他,所以这里说明Alex很担心。
根据上文his neck was much shorter than the others’可知,Alex的脖子比别人的更短,故应选C。
后面;laughed at嘲笑;heard of听说。根据下句话but his parents told him not to worry. They said that he should be happy with himself the way he was.
But as his friends grew taller and taller, his neck_____4_____short.
Alex was the only giraffe that could fit through it.
They looked happy to see something so special at the zoo可知,游客们在动物园里看到了很特别的东西,他们很开心,选项中A选项与happy意思相近,所以应该是“兴奋地尖叫”,选A。
例如第2小题,选项中是四个形容词,联系上下文的意思his neck was much shorter than the others’. …But his mother told him that he was special. She said it did not matter how short or long his neck was. They looked happy to see something so special at the zoo可知,游客们在动物园里看到了很特别的东西,他们很开心,所以四个选项中只有A与happy意思相近,这里应该是“兴奋地尖叫”,故选A。

A. 6.4 B. 12.5 C. 18.5 D. 20.5
60. How have scientists been able to change plants more quickly?
A. By making the best plants. B. By asking the farmers to grow plants.
C. By changing planting environment. D. By changing their genetic material
61. Why do rich countries produce GM foods?
A. Because they are easy to grow and bring in more money.
B. Because they are easy to grow and very cheap.
C. Because they help produce more food.
D. Because they are the best plants.

A. Thankful. B. Worried. C. Angry. D. Tired.
