Use our website to improve your English
Study at the right time each day
The first step in getting better in English is to study at the right time each day. Do you wake up early and study when the house is quiet? Or do you like to stay up late and study before you go to sleep? Choose the proper time to study English every week. Make a study plan for each week. Here is an example of using our website to improve your listening and speaking skills:
Monday: Watch Let's Learn English; practice the conversation with a friend
Tuesday: Watch English in a Minute; teach the new expressions to family or friends
Wednesday: Watch English at the Movies; write a note to a friend about the expressions
Thursday: Watch News Words; write a sentence using the words
Friday: Read or listen to Ask a Teacher or Everyday Grammar; write three sentences
Find a friend to study together
A good way to learn is to study with a friend or a family member. You can study together at home or on the phone. Some families speak English only at dinner time or watch English videos together.
Set goals
One of the most important steps to learn English is to set goals. Make it something you know you can do in a short time. Here are some examples:
I will practice speaking with my friends three times a week.
I will write sentences with five new English words every week.
I will learn four new idioms in the next month and use them with friends.
1. Which advice is given on learning English?

Every one of us may have been hurt by others — either by their words or actions. The best way to deal with the problem is to “forgive and forget”.
“It is well established that learning to forgive others can have positive benefits for one’s physical and mental health,” Saima Noreen, a scientist at the University of St. Andrews, UK, told the Huffington Post.
Recently, Noreen and her research team have found one more reason that you should stick to this principle — forgiving somebody who has hurt you makes it easier for you to forget the unhappy memory, according to their new study.
In the study, researchers asked volunteers to read descriptions of 40 different situations that contained bad actions such as stealing, lying and cheating. Imagining being the victims (受害者) , volunteers then had to decide whether they would be able to forgive. Two weeks later, volunteers took part in a memory test. In the test, they were shown a series of words related to the situations they had read about and then were asked to recall certain ones.
The results showed that people were less likely to remember the details of the unpleasant experiences if they had found forgiveness in their hearts. In contrast, if they hadn’t forgiven the mistake, they could always remember what had happened.
However, forgiving someone who has hurt you is always easier said than done. So Noreen hopes that one day in the near future research will give rise to powerful therapeutic (有疗效的) tools that will enable people to “forgive and forget” more effectively.
4. What have Noreen and her team found recently?
A. They have found no reason to hurt other people.
B. A memory test is necessary to help people forgive.
C. An unpleasant experience can be easily forgotten.
D. Forgiving helps us to forget unhappy memories.
5. The right order of the following steps of the study should be ______.
a. Take a memory test. b. Imagine being a victim.
c. Decide whether to forgive or not. d. Read descriptions of 40 different situations.
A. d→b→a→c B. d→b→c→a C. a→b→d→c D. a→d→b→c
6. What does the underlined word “recall” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Remember. B. Translate. C. Choose. D. Explain.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. It’s impossible to forgive someone. B. Noreen has finished her research report.
C. There may be some therapeutic tools soon. D. The therapeutic tools have been invented.
D 5. B 6. A 7. C
根据第三段中“Recently, Noreen and her research team have found one more reason that you should stick to this principle—forgiving somebody who has hurt you makes it easier for you to forget the unhappy memory, according to their new study.(最近,诺琳和她的研究小组又发现了一个你应该坚持这一原则的理由——根据他们的新研究,原谅伤害过你的人会让你更容易忘记不愉快的记忆。)”
根据第四段中“In the study, researchers asked volunteers to read descriptions of 40 different situations that contained bad actions such as stealing, lying and cheating.(在这项研究中,研究人员要求志愿者阅读40种不同情况的描述,这些描述包含了偷窃、撒谎和欺骗等不良行为。)”、“Imagining being the victims (受害者) , volunteers then had to decide whether they would be able to forgive. (想象自己是受害者,然后志愿者们必须决定他们是否能够原谅。)”以及“Two weeks later, volunteers took part in a memory test. In the test, they were shown a series of words related to the situations they had read about and then were asked to recall certain ones.(两周后,志愿者们参加了一项记忆力测试。在测试中,研究人员向他们展示了一系列与他们所读到的情景相关的单词,然后要求他们回忆某些单词。)”可知,首先,志愿者需要阅读40个不同情境的描述;然后,他们需要想象自己是受害者;接下来,他们需要决定是否原谅;最后,两周后,志愿者需要参加一个记忆测试。因此,正确的顺序应该是d→b→c→a。故选B。
【6题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词前面的内容“In the test, they were shown a series of words related to the situations they had read about (在测试中,研究人员向他们展示了一系列与他们所读到的情景相关的单词)”以及划线词下一段的内容“The results showed that people were less likely to remember the details of the unpleasant experiences if they had found forgiveness in their hearts. (结果表明,如果人们在心中找到宽恕,他们就不太可能记住不愉快经历的细节。)”可知,志愿者被展示了与他们所阅读的情境相关的一系列单词,然后被要求记住其中某些单词。如果人们在心中找到宽恕,他们就不太可能记住不愉快经历的细节。因此,recall在这里的意思是与A选项“Remember.(记住)”为同义词。故选A。
根据最后一段中“So Noreen hopes that one day in the near future research will give rise to powerful therapeutic(有疗效的) tools that will enable people to “forgive and forget” more effectively.(因此,诺林希望在不久的将来,有一天,研究将产生强大的治疗工具,使人们能够更有效地‘原谅和忘记’。)”
Ashley Liberto and her dog Bentley have been inseparable since she got him eight years ago. When Bentley had trouble walking a few years ago, Liberto was worried. “I took him to the pet hospital. He was diagnosed (诊断) with an amputated (截肢) right elbow and would need a prosthetic leg,” Liberto says. Luckily, the surgery (外科手术) was a success.
After Bentley started moving again on three legs, Liberto decided to get a custom prosthetic leg (定制的假肢) for him. When she saw the cost of custom dog prosthetics, the teacher at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina reached out to some of her former students for help in finding a more affordable choice.
Providence Day School has a class focused on computer- aided design (计算机辅助设计) and 3D printing. The teacher, Todd Johnson, says, “It’s an introductory level class that teaches students to make basic shapes using the technology. But when Liberto suggested trying to make a prosthetic leg for her dog, the students were excited to help and try something new.”
“I thought it was a chance for the students to see a real- world application of what they were learning at school. I knew once the students started thinking about it seriously, they would come up with excellent designs,” Johnson says.
The class broke up into small groups to come up with designs for Bentley. Team leader Brandon Hollis and his group came up with the winning design. Hollis group spent weeks creating a prosthetic leg for Bentley. “It fit way better than I could have hoped for. It still needs some small changes, and then it should fit perfectly,” Hollis says.
The students hope to have a finished custom ( adj.量身设计的) and comfortable prosthetic leg for Bentley in the next few weeks. Even though the class has ended, the young designers have continued the project on their own time.

Federal scientists have started testing migratory birds (候鸟) for signs of a dangerous bird flu that could show up on this continent this spring.
The testing of shorebirds began Wednesday at an Anchorage coastal wildlife refuge (藏身处), said Bruce Woods, spokesman with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
It is the first sampling of a summer-long project to swab (用拭子取液体) birds for bird flu throughout the state. Nationwide, the goal is to sample 75,000 to 100,000 wild birds. In Alaska, about $ 4 million in federal money will be paid to study about 15, 000 birds, Woods said.
“We had some success in catching some of the target species,” Woods said Thursday.
More than 40 species of waterfowl and shorebirds are considered susceptible to infection by a highly pathogenic (致病的) H5N1 bird flu virus that’s killed more than 100 people, in other parts of the world, mostly in Asia.
Scientists will only test birds in the Anchorage area through early next week. “In this location, it’s very brief. Birds go through and they’re gone,” he said.
To screen the birds for the deadly virus, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Alaska’s Fish and Game Department also are setting up more than 50 remote backcountry camps accessible mainly by float planes or boats.
Many birds will be tested and released, while others killed during seasonal hunts will be tested after they have died.
Alaska is an ideal bird flu laboratory because it’s at the crossroads of migratory pathways for birds flying between the United States and other countries. Some of these birds arrive in Alaska each year from Asia, reports AP.
13. Which of the following is wrong?
A. Over 50 remote hackcountry camps are being built.
B. More than 100 people have died of H5N1 bird flu virus.
C. In Alaska, the goal to swab birds for bird flu is 75,000 to 100,000 wild birds.
D. Around 15,000 birds will be studied with the money provided by the federal government.
14. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Only killed birds will be tested.
B. Asia is a more serious part infected by H5N1 virus.
C. The scientists there have no experience to catch the birds.
D. As many as 50 species of waterfowl and shorebird are infected by H5N1 bird flu virus.
15. What makes Alaska an ideal bird flu laboratory?
A. Its location. B. Its climate.
C. The birds there. D. Its environment.
16. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How are migratory birds tested for bird flu B. Testing for bird flu begins in Alaska
C. Alaska, an ideal bird flu laboratory D. Influence of H5N1 bird flu vims
C 14. B 15. A 16. B

40. to prevent
41. was founded
42. representing
43. what 44. the
45. varieties
46. Gradually
故填which。
故填after。
故填to prevent。
故填was founded。
故填what。
故填the。

I was wrong, and I’m truly sorry”, “I appreciate your apology,” he said calmly. “But you should know that I had already forgiven you a long time ago. We were both young and made mistakes.”

That day, the weather was very hot, and I was so nervous that I was unable to keep, still land think calmly. My friend John and I were discussing a problem, I thought this was the right thing to do, but he thought that was the right thing to do.
In the middle of our discussion, he made ink from his pen on my new notebook by accident. I was very angry and I said to him, “Why did you do that?” As I spoke, I deliberately spilled the ink from my pen into his book. “You, you did it on purpose,” he said loudly. At that moment, he was very angry, his face was red with anger, his eyebrows were almost raised, his forehead was wrinkled (皱起) more and more tight, and his mouth was wide open with anger. Suddenly, he pushed my things on the table to the floor. When I saw him do this, I was annoyed with him very much, so I pushed his to the floor, and angrily said to him, “We are no longer friends!” “Well, it’s you who break off the friendship!” The friend shouted like a lion. I immediately took my things and left.
From that day on, every time I met him, I would take another way to avoid him. When I met him, he seemed to want to say something. However, I didn’t wait for him to say anything, and ran away like an arrow.
Since that incident, I had been reflecting(反思) on, myself, feeling that I had done something wrong, but I didn’t have enough courage to apologize to him. I knew that he didn’t mean to make ink from his pen on the book that time, but I exactly did. I shouldn’t have made his book wet in ink by design. I hated myself all the time. I was angry with myself.
