When the first season of Downton Abbey aired in the U.S., my wife Carol and I were totally absorbed. Carol, who writes under the name, Carol Wallace, had always been fascinated by English history, especially the period when American wealthy women married into the British nobility (贵族). She co-authored To Marry an English Lord in 1989, a book about this topic, but it was long out of print. Downton Abbey seemed to reflect many themes from her book, even featuring an American character married to the British lordly owner of the house.
As the second season aired in Britain in fall 2011, the New York Times ran a piece suggesting books for Downton Abbey fans. Sadly, Carol’s book wasn’t included. “I wish you could talk to Julian Fellowes, the writer for the series,” I said. “He’d love your book.” “But how could we ever reach him?” Carol replied.
Later that afternoon, while walking down Thirty-Fourth Street in New York, I ran into an old friend. She introduced me to a friend who, to my surprise, knew how to contact Julian Fellowes. Thanks to her involvement in a British historical society, she had his contact details and shared them with me.
Carol emailed Fellowes that evening, unsure if he’d even see it. The next day, she heard directly from him. He was a big fan of her book, and, in fact, it had informed the series. Fellowes offered to write to the New York Times, which published his letter to the editor almost immediately.
“In your article about books that might please fans of Downton Abbey,” Fellowes wrote, “I was sorry that one title was missing: To Marry an English Lord…”
Carol thanked him and asked if he’d write a promotional description for the book, which she hoped may inspire a reprint. Of course, by all means, Fellowes agreed. When the book was republished, it was labeled “an inspiration for the popular television series Downton Abbey”. Thanks to this, the book sold more copies than before — all because of an unexpected chain of events that only angels could have seen coming.
4. What can we learn about Carol from Paragraph 1?
A. She was a fan of Downton Abbey.
B. She was fascinated by American history.
C. She wrote several novels about British nobility.
D. She volunteered as a consultant for a TV show.
5. How did Carol manage to contact Julian Fellowes?
A. By attending a historical event.
B. By running into him in the street.
C. By calling a society he was involved in.
D. By asking someone for his contact information.
6. How was Carol’s book linked to Downton Abbey?
A. It was inspired by the series.
B. It played a role in shaping the series.
C. Both were praised by the same editor.
D. Both were written from the same point of view.
7. What was the result of the book’s reprint?
A. It brought about a movie adaptation.
B. It witnessed increased sales of the book.
C. It boosted the author’s confidence.
D. It inspired the creation of similar books.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. B 7. B

C
Imagine the final stretch of a marathon: your body aches, but the cheering crowd gives you energy to run faster. Similarly, a basketball team wins more home games in front of their own fans. Even you might solve a problem faster when someone watches. These common experiences all point to a basic psychological principle.
This phenomenon is known as social facilitation (促进), which describes how individuals can perform tasks differently when in the company of others compared to when they are alone. The concept was first proposed by psychologist Norman Tripplett, who noticed that cyclists raced faster in groups. He tested his theory with a simple experiment where children were tasked with winding fishing line. Tripplett observed that the children who were being around others moved faster, suggesting that a peer (同龄人) nearby can motivate.
But later studies found conflicting evidence. In another test, participants were given a more complex task, like memorizing a list of words. Those in front of others performed worse than those working alone. This contradiction (矛盾) led to a key change of the theory. The presence of an audience tends to improve performance on simple tasks. On the other hand, for novel tasks, the same audience can hurt performance.
Why does this happen? Psychologists suggest the key reason is our concern about being judged by others. Since approval and disapproval often depend on others’ evaluations, we naturally become more alert in front of an audience. This alertness helps with mastered skills, but gets in the way of learning new ones.
There isn’t one recipe for success, but social facilitation theory helps to point us in the right direction. To improve a well-practiced skill like running or playing an instrument, strategically seek an audience by joining a club or performing publicly. If you struggle when watched, practice alone until you gain confidence. By taking advantage of social settings wisely, we can use the audience effect to achieve our best performance.
8. What is the main idea of social facilitation?
A. Group interaction enhances learning efficiency.
B. Individual performance peaks in competitive settings.
C. Social situations have predictable effects on behavior.
D. The presence of others can influence our performance.
9. Which factor can explain the conflicting results in paragraph 3?
A. The size of the audience. B. The difficulty of the task.
C. The type of the reward. D. The personality of the participant.
10. What is the root cause of social facilitation?
A. Evaluation anxiety. B. Peer pressure.
C. Competitive desire. D. Personal standard.
11. What does the author suggest we do about the phenomenon?
A. Gradually increase audience size. B. Thoughtfully manage social contexts.
C. Actively observe others' performances. D. Strategically seek supportive audiences.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. B

Technology seems to discourage slow, immersive reading. Reading on a screen tires your eyes and makes it harder to keep your place. So online writing tends to be more skimmable and list-like than printed text.
We shouldn’t overplay this danger. All readers skim, a skill learned in childhood as we become better readers. Nor is there anything new in these fears about declining attention spans (持续时间). So far, the concerns have turned out to be false alarms. “Quite a few critics have been worried about attention span lately and see very short stories as signs of cultural decline,” the American author Selvin Brown wrote.“But no one ever said that poems were evidence of short attention spans.”
And yet the Internet has certainly changed the way we read. First, it means that there is more to read, because more people than ever are writing. Digital writing is designed for rapid release and immediate response. Online articles quickly attract comments within minutes of publication. This can make writing and reading more interactive and fun, but people often respond too quickly without thinking much about others’ ideas. The result is a noisy space where everyone talks over everyone else, all desperate to be heard.
To a slow reader, a piece of writing can only be fully understood by engaging with the words and slowly following the line of thought. The human need for this kind of deep reading is too tenacious for any new technology to destroy. We often assume that technological change is unstoppable and one-directional, so that older media like printed books are kicked out by newer digital forms. In practice, however, older technologies can coexist with new ones. The Kindle and the iPad have not killed off the printed book any more than the car killed off the bicycle. We still want to enjoy carefully-formed ideas and precisely-chosen words. Even in a fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.
12. What is the author’s attitude towards Selvin Brown’s opinion?
A. Favorable. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
13. What can be inferred about digital reading from Paragraph 3?
A. It requires readers to stay fully immersed.
B. It encourages readers to think more deeply.
C. It leads readers to value responding over reflection.
D. It reduces the amount of information people are exposed to.
14. What does the underlined word“tenacious” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Straight-forward. B. Old-fashioned.
C. Deep-rooted. D. Well-balanced.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Slow Reading Is Here to Stay
B. Digital Technology Prevents Slow Reading
C. Digital Reading: An Unstoppable Revolution
D. Screen vs. Print: Which Requires Deep Reading
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. C 15. A
【解析】
【导语】文章主要讨论了科技对阅读方式的影响,并强调慢阅读仍有其存在的价值。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Nor is there anything new in these fears about declining attention spans (持续时间). So far, the concerns have turned out to be false alarms. “Quite a few critics have been worried about attention span lately and see very short stories as signs of cultural decline,” the American author Selvin Brown wrote.“But no one ever said that poems were evidence of short attention spans.”(人们对注意力持续时间下降的这类担忧早已屡见不鲜。
根据第三段“Digital writing is designed for rapid release and immediate response. Online articles quickly attract comments within minutes of publication. This can make writing and reading more interactive and fun, but people often respond too quickly without thinking much about others’ ideas.(数字写作是为了快速发布和即时回应而设计的。在线文章在发表后几分钟内就能迅速吸引评论。这可以使写作和阅读更具互动性和趣味性,但人们往往回应得太快,而没有对别人的想法进行太多思考)”可知,数字阅读鼓励读者快速回应,而往往没有对别人的想法进行太多思考,即数字阅读导致读者更重视回应而非反思。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词所在句“The human need for this kind of deep reading is too tenacious for any new technology to destroy.(人类对这种深度阅读的需求是如此的tenacious,以至于任何新技术都无法摧毁它)”可知,任何新技术都无法摧毁它,说明人类对深度阅读的需求是强烈,由此可推测出tenacious意为“根深蒂固的,强烈的”。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合最后一段“The human need for this kind of deep reading is too tenacious for any new technology to destroy. Even in a fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.(人类对这种深度阅读的需求是如此强烈,以至于任何新技术都无法摧毁它。 A选项“Slow Reading Is Here to Stay(慢阅读将会一直存在)”符合题意,适合作为标题。

If your life were a book and you were the author, how would you want your story to go? That’s the question that changed my life forever. Growing up in the hot Las Vegas desert, all I wanted was to be free. I would daydream about traveling the world, living in a place where it snowed, snowboarding to my heart’s content, and I would picture all of the stories that I would go on to tell.
At the age of 19, the day after I graduated high school, I moved to a place where it snowed and became a snowboarder. With this job all I needed was a snowboard and I could go anywhere. For the first time in my life, I felt free, independent and completely in control of my life. That was, until my life took an unexpected turn. I went home from work early one day with what I thought was the flu,and less than 24 hours later I was in the hospital on life support with less than a two percent chance of living. It wasn’t until days later as I lay unconscious that the doctors diagnosed me with blood infection. Over the course of two and a half months I lost a kidney (肾) and both of my legs below the knees.
When my parents wheeled me out of the hospital I felt like I had been pieced back together like a doll. I thought the worst was over until weeks later when I saw my new legs for the first time. The legs were blocks of metal with pipes bolted together for the ankles and a yellow rubber foot with a raised rubber line from the toe to the ankle to look like a vein.
Tears streaming down my face, I strapped on these artificial legs and stood up. They were so painful that all I could think was, how was I ever going to travel the world in these things? How was I ever going to live the life full of adventure and stories, as I always wanted? And how was I going to snowboard again?
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.每段的开头语已为你写好,不计入词数。
I went home, crawled into bed and tried to escape from reality.

Four months later I was back up on a snowboard.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I went home, crawled into bed and tried to escape from reality. I tossed my snowboarding photos aside, hid my travel journals and ignored friends’ calls. For days, I drowned in self-pity, convinced my adventure dream was over. But one night, that question echoed in my mind: “If your life were a book, how would you want your story to go?” I knew I couldn’t let this be the end. The next morning, I called a prosthetics specialist to ask about snowboarding-adapted legs and started grueling physical therapy, pushing through pain to rewrite my story.
Four months later I was back up on a snowboard. My hands shook as I strapped in, a mix of fear and excitement surging through me. I fell again and again, but each time I got back up, my resolve grew stronger. By day’s end, I was carving down the slope, wind on my face, and forgot all about my artificial legs. Now, I’ve traveled to snow-covered mountains worldwide, sharing my story. My life’s book didn’t follow the expected plot, but it’s brimming with more courage and adventure than I ever dreamed possible.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
