Nuclear power’s (核能的) danger to health, safety, and even life itself can be 16 in one word: radiation (辐射).
Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human 17 . It can’t be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. 18 , radio waves are all around us but we can’t detect or sense them without a radio receiver. Similarly, we can’t sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being outright by killing masses of cells in important organs (器官). But 20 the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no level of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be significant. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be 21 . They reproduce themselves in a/an 22 way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years.

You may notice that horses appear in many Chinese idioms. These horse-related sayings offer fascinating glimpses into Chinese culture and ancient 45 .
“A horse that covers a thousand miles” is perhaps the most famous horse idiom. It describes someone with extraordinary talent or potential. Chinese parents often use this phrase to 46 their children, expecting them to become “thousand-mile horses” who achieve great things. The idiom comes from ancient times when people believed certain legendary (传奇的) horses could run 1, 000 miles in a day.
“A swift horse needs a good rider” adds another layer to this idea. While talented people (“swift horses”)might be common, good leaders who can recognize talent (“good riders”) are rare. This saying reminds us that having talent isn’t enough—you need someone who 47 you and gives you opportunities.
“Ride a horse while looking for a better one” describes someone who keeps searching for better opportunities while staying in their present situation. Chinese people use this idiom to describe practical, 48 people who never stop improving themselves.
“An old horse knows the way” celebrates the wisdom that comes with 49 . Just as an old horse remembers the safest paths through mountains, experienced people can guide others through difficult situations. This idiom shows Chinese respect for elders and their accumulated knowledge.
“A painted horse won’t run” warns against valuing appearance over substance (实质). No matter how beautifully you paint a horse, it will never gallop (驰骋). 50 , fancy promises without real action are worthless. This idiom teaches Chinese to value practical results over empty words.
These horse idioms reveal how ancient Chinese people observed horses’ strength, speed, and intelligence, turning these observations into timeless lessons about human, nature and success.

Buzz, buzz…
My smartphone interrupted while I was chatting with my friend Nina in a café. I took a look at the number and hung up.
“A spam call (骚扰电话)?” Nina asked curiously.
“96110… the Shanghai Anti-Fraud Center (上海市反诈中心), right?” I said. “Maybe they’ll offer me some anti-fraud tips, but I’m young and smart. I don’t need a lecture on those. They should just focus on elderly people.”
“But there must be a r 51 why they’re calling you,” my friend said.
“You know,” Nina went on to talk about her husband, “Mr. Goodie almost ended up in Cambodia (柬埔寨)!” One day last month, he was on the phone with a “college classmate” for a long time. The two hadn’t spoken in years, and the “classmate” told him that he was now living and working in Phnom Penh (金边), Cambodia. He i 52 Nina’s husband to travel there. He could show him around the capital city for free, he said.
Mr. Goodie did have a classmate by that name. While Nina w 53 him that the “classmate” might be a fraudster (诈骗犯), her husband didn’t agree with her. “How could a fraudster know me so well?” he asked. Then, about a week later, the Shanghai Anti-Fraud Center called him. The police told him they had caught the “classmate”—a fraudster indeed.
Buzz, buzz…
My phone vibrated (振动) again and showed 96110. This time, I answered it. From the o 54 end came the soft but serious voice of a policewoman.
“Mr. Yang, right?”
“Yes.”
“We recently caught a group of telecom (电信) fraudsters. We found that they had once c 55 you. Have you ever wired (电汇) money to someone you didn’t know?”
“I don’t think I have…”
“Think again. Have you ever done that?” The policewoman’s voice became even more serious.
“No.”
“Okay. If you d 56 later that you have, call 96110.”
“What is it?” Nina asked as soon as the call ended. “You were also targeted by fraudsters?”
“Yes… the police said they had phoned me, but I p 57 just hung up on them,” I said. “Well, obviously it’s not just elderly people who can be at risk from fraudsters.”

Lila Delgado always has a tight schedule on Thursdays. She wakes up at 8 a.m. Her chef, serves her breakfast. Edith, her secretary, will be waiting in the study and, at 9:30, Lila will be there to answer her mail. At noon, Lila will take a train to Manhattan for her weekly lunch with her friends Rosie and Cathy. The 3:05 nonstop train will bring her back. Usually, when she arrives home, at around 3:55, Allan has already prepared afternoon tea for her. Next comes a massage given by Neal, her personal therapist [1]. Lila enjoys her busy life, even though it may appear to be quite tiring.
Last Thursday, however, there was an unexpected change of plan. Lila decided to take her favourite diamond necklace to a jeweler for cleaning. At noon, she threw the necklace into her purse and went to lunch.
As she kissed Rosie and Cathy goodbye, Lila sensed she was being followed. The feeling continued until she reached Fifth Avenue. Then, as she joined the crowd of shoppers, she felt a sudden pull. A man on in-line skates [2] sailed past her and grabbed her purse.
The police responded quickly. There were, however, lots of forms to fill out. The 3:05 nonstop train left without Lila. She returned home an hour late. The ice cream that Allan had prepared for her had already melted. Lila sighed heavily and walked past it without a word. Neal had just set up the massage table. He, along with Edith, tried to comfort Lila.
Later that day, Edith was in the kitchen watching Allan cook dinner. “You know,” she said, “this was an inside job. The thief followed her. He knew she was carrying that necklace.”
Allan thought for a while. “You have family in Manhattan, don’t you? And wasn’t it you who suggested that Ms. Lila have her necklace cleaned?”
“You think it was me?” Edith stammered. “You…you…and Neal both knew…knew…this plan, and…your cousin owns an in-line skating store in Manhattan?”
“Yes,” Allan replied. “But you had the afternoon off. You could have stolen the necklace yourself!”

“96110… the Shanghai Anti-Fraud Center (上海市反诈中心), right?” I said. “Maybe they’ll offer me some anti-fraud tips, but I’m young and smart. I don’t need a lecture on those. They should just focus on elderly people.”

D. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答问题) (12 分)
Now, young detectives, it’s your turn: Who was this “insider”?
Word box
[1] therapist n.理疗师 [2] in-line skates直排式轮滑鞋
58.How often does Lila Delgado go to Manhattan?
59.Where was the necklace stolen?
60.What were the other two things that went wrong with Lila’s schedule because of the unexpected change?
(1)
(2)
(3) She was an hour late for her massage.
61.How did Lila feel after she returned home on the day of the theft?
62.What does the underlined word “this” refer to?
“This” refers to
63.In your opinion, who was most likely the “insider” ? Why do you think so?
【答案】58.Once a week. 59.On Fifth Avenue. 60. She missed the 3:05 nonstop train home. The ice cream Allan prepared for her had already melted. 61.She felt upset/sad. 62.The theft of Lila’s necklace. 63.Edith. Because she knew Lila would take her necklace to be cleaned, she had the afternoon off, and she has family in Manhattan.
【导语】本文是一篇侦探故事类记叙文,讲述了Lila Delgado在周四按常规行程出行时,项链被偷的事件,通过人物对话和细节铺垫,引导读者找出内鬼。
58.第一段提到“Lila will take a train to Manhattan for her weekly lunch with her friends Rosie and Cathy.”,其中“weekly”意为“每周一次的”,直接表明她每周去一次曼哈顿。
59.第二段提到Lila去珠宝店清洁项链,第三段描述“The feeling continued until she reached Fifth Avenue. …A man on in-line skates sailed past her and grabbed her purse.”,说明项链是在她进入第五大道时被偷的。
60.第四段提到“The 3:05 nonstop train left without Lila. She returned home an hour late. The ice cream Allan had prepared for her had already melted.”,结合题干已给出的“(3) She was an hour late for her massage.”,可得出另外两件事:① 她错过了3:05的直达列车;② Allan为她准备的冰淇淋已经融化了。
61.第四段提到“Lila sighed heavily and walked past it without a word. Neal had just set up the massage table. He, along with Edith, tried to comfort Lila.”,“重重叹气”和“需要安慰”表明她心情沮丧、难过。
62.前文讲述了Lila的项链被偷的事件,第五段Edith说“this was an inside job”,结合上下文,“this”指代的就是“Lila的项链被偷这件事”。
63.综合全文细节,第六段Allan指出“You have family in Manhattan, don’t you? And wasn’t it you who suggested that Ms. Lila have her necklace cleaned?” 第七段“Edith stammered”“You…you…and Neal both knew…knew…this plan, and…your cousin owns an in-line skating store in Manhattan?”表明,Edith说话结结巴巴,且她第一时间嫁祸别人,立刻把嫌疑推给艾伦和尼尔,典型凶手行为,故内鬼是Edith。

Dear teachers and fellow students,
Today I’m glad to share how AI powers my study.
When I meet difficult math problems or confusing English grammar, AI always helps me break down the steps clearly, instead of just giving answers. It saves my study time and lets me master knowledge faster.
AI also encourages me to think more creatively. It’s a great helper, but we should use it wisely. Let’s make AI a true partner for our growth!
