A. Perform eye exams. B. Cook nutritious meals.
C. Manage school gardens. D. Record blood pressure.
3. How do construction projects differ from the others?

B
When my son was little, he liked to run in our driveway until he fell. He would then turn to me to see if he was hurt. If my face betrayed worry or concern, he would cry. If I stayed calm, he would brush himself off and get back to running. Here was this human being who was counting on me to make sense of the world — not just how to tie his shoes or recite the ABCs, but how to feel.
Years later, in middle school, this lesson returned. One night, my son told me about a classmate who had been unkind to him. My first reaction was to rush to fix it — email the parents, call the school, demand action. But instead of reacting, I paused. “That sounds hard. What did you do?”
“I decided not to hang out with him for a while,” my son replied. “I am going to try playing soccer at lunch instead.” “That’s a great solution,” I said, and he went back to his homework.
These ordinary parenting moments taught me an important truth: sometimes, the best thing a parent can do is doing nothing at all. Over 30 years in schools, too often I’ve watched parents overreacting, robbing their kids of the confidence that comes from struggling, and exhausting themselves in the process. Most Americans now believe that young people will not be better off than their parents. They see greater competition for fewer resources — be it college admissions, jobs, or housing. However, a young person who gets used to having a parent intervene on his behalf begins to believe that he’s not capable of acting on his own, feeling both anxiety and dependence.
I want to make a case for the Lighthouse Parent, a term that the educator has used. A lighthouse parent stands as a steady, reliable guide, providing safety and understanding without controlling every aspect of their child’s journey, like a lighthouse that helps sailors avoid crashing into rocks. The key is learning when to step back and enable them to find their own way.
4. What does the author want to tell with the example of his child falling?
A. Children should be prevented from taking risks.
B. Parents can feel exactly what their children feel.
C. Parents’ reaction influences children’s mental state.
D. Children would cry regardless of parental guidance.
5. What does the underlined word “intervene” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Step in. B. Move on.
C. Speak up. D. Take off.
6. What kind of parent is the author?
A. Distant. B. Traditional.
C. Supportive. D. Overprotective.
7. What would Lighthouse Parents do when children are anxious about a school presentation?
A. Complete the task for the child.
B. Contact and criticize the teacher.
C. Ask the child to report every step.
D. Guide the child while letting them act.
C
It might not have been the first to have a touchscreen, but it was Tesla’s Model S, with its small cabin built around a huge full-color display, that set the trend. For years almost every new car sold has a high-tech, futuristic screen, which controls everything from the air-conditioning to the music.
But are touchscreens safe? The argument against them is simple. If using a smartphone while driving is dangerous, the same logic applies to a car’s screen. Physical buttons allow for eyes-off operation, but a touchscreen offers no physical feedback. And because a screen must do dozens of jobs, finding a particular setting often means tapping through several sub-menus. The result, say critics, is that drivers’ attention is divided.
Research backs that up. A 2022 test by Vi Bilagare, a Swedish magazine, timed drivers performing tasks like changing radio stations while driving at 110 km/h. It set 11 touchscreen cars against an older model with buttons. In the old car, drivers were able to do all tasks within about 10 seconds, during which time the car travelled around 300 metres. In the worst-performing modern car, the same tasks took 45 seconds, during which the car travelled 1. 4 km. Even in the best-performing models, testers still took several seconds longer than in the old car. Another 2020 analysis by Britain’s Transport Research Laboratory found touchscreens damaged reaction time more than driving over the legal alcohol limit.
Safety organizations begin to notice. From January, new rules from Euro NCAP, an organization that provides safety ratings for cars in Europe, will mean no car can get a full five-star score unless certain crucial functions are controlled by real switches. Therefore, carmakers, such as Volkswagen and Porsche, have begun restoring at least some buttons to their new models. But innovation never stops. Even as touchscreens are falling out of favour, many carmakers are turning their attention to voice control — though that is a subject for another story.
8. Why does the author mention Tesla’s Model S?
A. To introduce a topic. B. To show its market success.
C. To compare it with older cars. D. To emphasize its technical lead.
9. Why do touchscreens divide drivers’ attention according to paragraph 2?
A. Their response is slow. B. Their operation is laborious.
C. Their feedback is rather confusing. D. Their settings are poorly organized.
10. What is the purpose of testing cars with buttons in the 2022 study?
A. To show their simple functions. B. To praise their safety technology.
C. To offer a performance reference. D. To recommend the old-style models.
11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Car Control: Touch or Voice B. Touchscreens: A Risky Trend
C. Car Buttons Make a Comeback D. New Rules Ensure Driving Safety
D
Rural folk can blame Aesop, an ancient Greek storyteller, for stories that laugh at them for being bumpkins (乡巴佬). His tale of the Country Mouse and the Town Mouse was only the first to emphasize their supposed simpler tastes and habits when compared with complex urbanites. So listen for the cheers from Somerset to Kansas as scientists announce it is city living that can dull the wits — at least when it comes to finding one’s way. Growing up in a city, a global survey has found, has a lifelong negative impact on a person’s ability to navigate (导航). When looking for a half-remembered restaurant in a poorly-lit street, it seems Country Mouse would be a more useful companion.
The new study led by Hugo Spiers at University College London describes how they used a data set from 4 million players of a computer game called “Sea Hero Quest” to test way-finding skills. It asked players to memorize a map showing the location of checkpoints and measured how well players can ride a boat to find them, guided only by their mental map. About 442,000 players from 38 countries were examined.
He found that the strongest indicator of a high score was a player’s age: older people performed relatively poorly, which arises from the decline of cognitive ability as people age. But the benefit of rural living was strong enough to reduce some of that. Data from American players showed that a 70-year-old who grew up in the countryside had the navigational abilities of a 60-year-old from the city across the dataset. Meanwhile, the gap between the navigation skills of rural and city people was largest in America (about six times wider than for Romania).
“Our study doesn’t show why cities have this impact on people growing up in them. It cannot rule out that an external factor such as the effect of air pollution on a developing brain, might play a role.” says Dr. Spiers, adding that the brain’s navigational abilities probably weaken in the less challenging city environment because they are not being used as much.
12. What does the phrase “dull the wits” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Cause confusion. B. Sharpen the mind.
C. Improve intelligence D. Weaken mental abilities.
13. How did Dr. Spiers’s team conduct the research?
A. They compared national geographic data.
B. They analyzed data from a computer game.
C. They observed subjects (participants/ players)’ real-life behavior.
D. They investigated people’s navigation experience.
14. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Age decides one’s navigation skills. B. Urban living’s effect differ by country.
C. Rural upbringing reduces aging’s effect. D. Urban living speeds up cognitive decline.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Brain weakens in cities? B. City living more challenging?
C. Navigating in cities necessary? D. City living weakens navigation skills?
Many people find it hard to finish what they start. Picture a student learning a difficult piece of music, practicing hard each day. After a few weeks, progress slows, practice becomes less frequent, and eventually, the music is set aside and forgotten. ____16____ This pattern repeats in many parts of life: half-done projects, broken resolutions, and goals that lose their excitement before they are reached.
____17____ Early excitement often comes from the fun and newness of a fresh start. This is where many efforts fail. As routine takes over and things get harder, that early energy can disappear, making us easily distracted or discouraged. Underestimating the effort makes it worse.
Not finishing affects more than just the task itself. It can quietly change how we see ourselves. ____18____ For example, someone who often starts and stops a fitness plan may begin to think they lack self-control, which can make them question whether they can stick with other things, from schoolwork to personal projects.
Stopping and restarting carries a significant mental cost. In fact, research has consistently shown that sticking with a task is the cornerstone of building solid skills and lasting habits. Quitting doesn’t just hit pause on our progress. ____19____
Becoming someone who finishes strong is therefore a skill that can be learned. A good approach is to break big goals into smaller, clear steps. This helps us see progress and makes the goal feel less scary. ____20____ Over time, following through consistently builds a reputation for being reliable. Teachers, friends, and future coworkers will notice this quality, leading to more trust and opportunities.
A. Obstacles are necessary steps.
B. It also makes trying again far harder.
C. It becomes a symbol of unfinished efforts.
D. This builds inner strength against quitting.
E. This cycle gradually weakens our self-trust.
F. Each quit adds to the mental difficulty of trying again.
G. To understand why we stop, we must look at how motivation changes.

I was so ____21____ that I couldn’t wait to take it out and ____22____ it. However, the first roll of film I shot was a total ____23____ — most photos were either overexposed or blurry. I felt really ____24____ and even considered ____25____ the camera away.
My uncle noticed my low spirits and asked what was wrong. I told him about my ___26___ and showed him the bad photos. I followed his advice. Every day after school, I would take my camera and ____31____ the streets, looking for little moments worth capturing. I learned to wait for the right light, to adjust the angle ____32____, and to pay attention to the details that others might ignore. Slowly, my photos got better and better. Some of them were even ____33____ in the school’s art exhibition.
That experience taught me a valuable lesson: mastery of any skill takes time and ____34____. There is no shortcut to success. You have to practice patiently, learn from your mistakes, and never ____35____ your passion. Now, photography is not just a hobby for me; it’s a way to see the beauty in the world and record the precious moments of life.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology, a direct communication pathway between the brain and external devices, ___36___ (make) remarkable progress in the past decade. It works by detecting electrical signals generated by brain cells, ___37___ (convert) them into commands that computers or machines can understand.
What makes BCI truly groundbreaking is ___38___ it enables people with disabilities to regain control of their lives. For example, patients who are paralyzed can use BCIs ___39___ (operate) wheelchairs, type on screens or even play musical instruments, simply by thinking about these actions. The key to this process lies in the ___40___ (precise) of the technology, as even tiny errors in signal interpretation will lead to incorrect movements.
Most BCIs today rely on invasive devices ___41___ (place) directly into the brain tissue, ___42___ method that ensures high signal quality but carries risks of infection. When handball was first introduced to schools, I wanted to bring it to my school in a remote village. This became a challenging task as the sports teacher was unwilling to do anything other than traditional sports.
I was not a sports teacher. However, I was determined to start this game. Handball is a fascinating game which combines strength, skill and teamwork. As a new sport, I foresaw it as a golden opportunity as our school had never secured a place in traditional sports.
The boys were immediately interested. I had the support of their parents but I still couldn’t convince the sports teacher. Ultimately, I used my position as principal to get the game going. An old boy who graduated some nine years earlier, volunteered to coach the team.
Although handball is an indoor game, we trained outdoors due to the limited equipment. “This handball craze will ruin your studies!” complained some of the teachers to discourage the game. Whenever the boys were late for class after practice they were punished, but I was able to keep them cheerful.
After three months of hard training we were able to send a team to compete with 50 other schools in the country’s largest city. Initially, the School Handball Association rejected us because we weren’t association (协会) members, but thankfully some members believed any school should be welcomed.
Our boys played remarkably well and reached the semifinals. And that was when the real game started. Students and teachers from urban schools joined forces against us, and considered it a shame to lose a match against boys from a rural village school who couldn’t even speak English. They wore leaves to insult our boys. Even the judges favoured them, resulting in our team’s loss of the victory. Defeated, the boys fell to the ground, sad and disappointed. However, other students were supportive, saying “Don’t cry, brothers. You’re the champions. You must come again next year and claim your victory.”

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

A 9. B 10. C 11. B

D 13. B 14. C 15. D

根据划线词后文“Growing up in a city, a global survey has found, has a lifelong negative impact on a person’s ability to navigate (导航). When looking for a half-remembered restaurant in a poorly-lit street, it seems Country Mouse would be a more useful companion.(一项全球范围内的调查发现,生活在城市中会对一个人的导航能力产生长期的负面影响。比如,当要在昏暗的街道上寻找一段模糊记忆中的餐馆时,“乡村老鼠”似乎会是个更有用的伙伴)”可知,城市生活损害导航能力,故划线词意思是“降低智力水平”。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The new study led by Hugo Spiers at University College London describes how they used a data set from 4 million players of a computer game called “Sea Hero Quest” to test way-finding skills.(由伦敦大学学院的霍乌·斯皮尔斯领导的一项新研究描述了他们如何利用一款名为“Sea Hero Quest”的电脑游戏的 400 万名玩家的数据集来测试导航技能)”可知,斯皮尔斯博士的团队通过分析一款电脑游戏的数据进行这项研究。
根据第三段中“older people performed relatively poorly, which arises from the decline of cognitive ability as people age. But the benefit of rural living was strong enough to reduce some of that. Data from American players showed that a 70-year-old who grew up in the countryside had the navigational abilities of a 60-year-old from the city across the dataset.(年龄较大的选手表现相对较差,这是因为随着年龄的增长,人的认知能力会有所下降。但乡村生活的益处足够显著,能够减轻这种影响。来自美国玩家的数据表明,在数据集中,一位在农村长大的70岁老人的导航能力与一位来自城市的60岁老人相当。)”可知,在农村环境中长大会减缓衰老的影响。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“So listen for the cheers from Somerset to Kansas as scientists announce it is city living that can dull the wits — at least when it comes to finding one’s way. Growing up in a city, a global survey has found, has a lifelong negative impact on a person’s ability to navigate (导航). When looking for a half-remembered restaurant in a poorly-lit street, it seems Country Mouse would be a more useful companion.(因此,听听从萨默塞特到堪萨斯的欢呼声吧,因为科学家们宣布,城市生活可能会让人变得迟钝——至少在找路方面是这样的。
C 17. G 18. E 19. B 20. D

根据上文“Many people find it hard to finish what they start. Picture a student learning a difficult piece of music, practicing hard each day. After a few weeks, progress slows, practice becomes less frequent, and eventually, the music is set aside and forgotten.(许多人发现自己很难完成已经开始的事情。想象一下,一个学生正在学习一首难度较大的乐曲,每天都在刻苦练习。几周之后,进步逐渐放缓,练习的频率也降低了,最终,这首乐曲被搁置一旁,被遗忘掉了)”以及后文“This pattern repeats in many parts of life: half-done projects, broken resolutions, and goals that lose their excitement before they are reached. (这种模式在生活的许多方面都会重复出现:未完成的项目、未兑现的承诺以及在未达成目标之前就失去热情的目标)”可知,前文举例学生练难的乐曲,进度放缓后放弃,将曲子搁置;后文提及生活中诸多未完成事项,C选项“它会成为未完成努力的象征”承接上文半途而废的事例,总起这类未竟努力的现象,衔接顺畅。故选C。
【17题详解】
根据后文“Early excitement often comes from the fun and newness of a fresh start. This is where many efforts fail. As routine takes over and things get harder, that early energy can disappear, making us easily distracted or discouraged. Underestimating the effort makes it worse.(起初的兴奋往往源于新起点带来的乐趣和新鲜感。但正是在这种情况下,很多努力往往以失败告终。当常规事务占据主导地位,事情变得愈发艰难时,那种最初的激情就会消退,使我们容易分心或气馁。低估了所需的努力会使情况变得更糟)”可知,本段分析人们半途而废的原因:初始新鲜感褪去、难度上升、动力消失,G选项“要理解我们为何停止,我们必须审视动机是如何变化的”总起本段,引出对放弃原因的探究,符合段落逻辑。故选G。
【18题详解】
根据上文“Not finishing affects more than just the task itself. It can quietly change how we see ourselves.(未完成的任务不仅会影响任务本身,还会悄然改变我们对自己的看法)”以及后文“For example, someone who often starts and stops a fitness plan may begin to think they lack self-control, which can make them question whether they can stick with other things, from schoolwork to personal projects.(例如,那些经常随意中断健身计划的人可能会开始认为自己缺乏自制力,这可能会让他们质疑自己能否坚持完成其他事情,比如学业或个人项目)”可知,前文指出半途而废会改变自我认知,后文举例健身计划半途而废会让人觉得自己缺乏自控力,E选项“这种循环会逐渐削弱我们的自我信任”点明半途而废的循环会削弱自我信任,承上启下。故选E。
根据上文“Stopping and restarting carries a significant mental cost. In fact, research has consistently shown that sticking with a task is the cornerstone of building solid skills and lasting habits. Quitting doesn’t just hit pause on our progress.(停止并重新开始会带来巨大的心理负担。事实上,研究一直表明,坚持完成一项任务是培养扎实技能和形成持久习惯的关键。放弃不仅会暂停我们的进步进程)”可知,前句“放弃不只是暂停进度”,B选项“这也会使再次尝试变得更加困难”中also体现递进关系,补充说明放弃还会让再次尝试变得极为困难,契合前文提及的放弃带来的心理代价。故选B。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Becoming someone who finishes strong is therefore a skill that can be learned. A good approach is to break big goals into smaller, clear steps. This helps us see progress and makes the goal feel less scary.(因此,成为那种能够出色完成任务的人是一种可以习得的技能。一个有效的方法是将大目标分解为更小、更明确的步骤。这样做能帮助我们看到进展,从而使目标不再那么令人畏惧)”以及后文“Over time, following through consistently builds a reputation for being reliable. Teachers, friends, and future coworkers will notice this quality, leading to more trust and opportunities.(随着时间的推移,始终如一地坚持下去会建立起值得信赖的良好声誉。

However, researchers recently developed non-invasive BCIs ___43___ use wearable sensors positioned on the scalp. These devices are safer and more convenient, though they are less accurate than their invasive counterparts.
___44___ is predicted that in the near future BCIs will move ____45____ medical applications. They may allow healthy people to control smart home devices with their minds or enhance cognitive abilities such as memory and focus.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Back at school, the memory of the unfair treatment was so clear in our minds.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The following year, nobody could stop us from winning the championship.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Back at school, the memory of the unfair treatment was so clear in our minds. I gathered the boys and told them that unfairness was not a reason to give up, but a motivation to become stronger. The old graduate coach increased the intensity of training, and the boys trained harder than ever, even using spare time to practice skills after finishing homework. Teachers who once opposed also changed their attitudes, helping them make up for missed lessons. Every student in the school cheered for them, and we even raised money to buy simple indoor training equipment.
The following year, nobody could stop us from winning the championship. We returned to the same city, more confident and skilled. This time, we were formally admitted as association members, and the judges treated us fairly. Facing the same urban teams, our boys played calmly and cooperated perfectly, defeating each opponent with solid skills. When the final whistle blew, the boys jumped for joy. Those who once insulted us fell silent, and we proved that rural boys could shine brightly with perseverance. Our school finally had its first sports championship, and handball became a pride of our remote village.
