July is just around the corner. As you look forward to travelling or having your holidays to the beach, an outdoor theatre may also be a good choice. There are plenty of outdoor theatres to choose from across the UK.
Storyhouse Theatre, Chester
Every year in July, Storyhouse theatre builds an entire amphitheatre (圆形剧场) in Grosvenor Park. This year sees an eclectic trio: The Gangs of New York, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Wizard of Oz. You will be most excited by the first: a new adaptation written by Kieran Lynn and directed by John Young.
Thorington Theatre, Suffolk
Opening in 2021, Thorington is built in a natural amphitheatre hidden in the Suffolk woodlands. This year’s programme includes some family favourites such as Teddy Bear’s Picnic and The Little Mermaid, as well as Shakespeare’s The Tempest and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre. It will be an unforgettable experience. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary among other things. If you want a show particularly fitting for this unique surrounding, check out The Pirates of Penzance playing in September.
Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Highland Perthshire
Throughout most of the year, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s indoor auditorium and studio serve as their regular performance spaces. But in summer, you can see equally lavish productions at the amphitheatre, nestled in the woods and overlooking Ben-Y-Vrackie mountain. This year they’ll be staging Dido and Aeneas, and The Secret Garden, the perfect story for this lush garden stage.

After he received the China Youth May Fourth Medal, Yang Yongxiu felt a greater sense of responsibility.
Born in a rural family in Shangqiu, Henan Province, the first vehicle he drove was a tractor(拖拉机). “When I was a child, my father drove me to the farm during farming season,” he said. Yang dreamed of making cars when he grew up. “During primary school, I often went to see the buses on the road near my village,” he said.” They made a deep impression on me.”
In 2007, he took gaokao, or China’s national college entrance examination, and scored more than he needed to get into an undergraduate program. To fulfill his dream, he chose to study numerical control technology at the Changchun Automobile Industry Institute, which has a long history of training workers for the automotive industry. The International Day of Peace is a day that aims to reduce violence (暴力) and to strengthen the ideals of peace around the world, and is observed on 21 September every year.
On the special day, the UN asks to stop all fighting around the world for 24 hours and asks people to observe one minute of silence at noon to honour victims of war and violence. The day begins with the Peace Bell Ceremony at the UN headquarters. The bell is made of metal that includes coins contributed by people from 65 member countries. After the bell has been rung, the UN Secretary-General delivers a speech.
Each year, the UN chooses a different theme for this day, such as “End racism: build peace” or “Climate action for peace”. This helps us to see that true peace can only be achieved when all people have the same rights, or that we must fight the climate emergency together.
People worldwide can engage in different events on this day. It could be in the field of the arts, with photography or film. Some schools also hold some activities focusing on preventing school violence. “This term, our school launches a new course teaching us to be peacemakers. Learning to be peacemakers, we can not only know negotiation (谈判) skills and take responsibility for resolving disagreements ourselves, but also help others involved in conflicts,” says Helen, a high school student.
With the Internet and social media, there is now a lot more awareness of the International Peace Day than back in 1981. Social media posts sharing information, ideas and peace messages reach millions of people all over the globe. There are many online events that people can register for on the day, like live shows, and conferences.
Apart from ending international conflicts, this day is also about changing our behaviour towards each other. For example, we can try to bring peace to our personal lives by saying sorry and making peace with someone we know. Individual actions add up to great things when they are multiplied by millions of people worldwide.
28. What marks the beginning of the yearly International Peace Day?
A. A speech from the UN Secretary-General.
B. One minute’s silence to honour war victims.
C. A donation of coins from 65 countries.
D. The ringing of the Peace Bell.
29. What may Helen think about her school’s new course this term?
A. It’s beneficial.
B. It’s creative.
C. It’s interesting.
D. It’s demanding.
30. What aspect of the International Peace Day does Paragraph 5 mainly center on?
A. Why people worldwide celebrate it.
B. What themes are conveyed on that day.
C. How people nowadays observe it online.
D. How people’s awareness of it builds up.
31. What does the author mainly intend to show in the last paragraph?
A. We should be brave to admit our own mistakes.
B. Everyone can make a difference to world peace.
C. Some conflicts between people are unavoidable.
D. We have a long way to go for world peace.
D
Wetlands are widely valued as natural pollution cleaners and habitats for endangered species. Holding carbon dioxide-processing microbes (微生物) that play a key role in climate change dynamics, they’re also a key part of the carbon cycle: Although wetlands cover only about 3% of Earth’s surface, they account for as much as 30% of soil carbon storage. Yet some wetland microbes secrete another powerful greenhouse gas — methane, which may cancel out some of the benefits of pulling carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Tringe, an environmental microbiologist in the U. S., is trying to determine just how much wetlands actually help counteract climate change, by turning to a novel discipline called metagenomics, which involves sequencing (测序) the collective genetic materials of all the microbes in a given location.
Scientists use chemicals to take out the genetic material from an environmental sample — say, a cup of dirty water. They run cloned snippets (克隆片段) of the material through a sequencing machine, which reads out what makes up each snippet. After all the data are pieced back together, they reveal the distinct gene sequences of the millions of microbes in the sample. The result: a broad overview of the microbial community and the functions each microbe performs within the ecosystem.
Tringe’s sampling has brought some evidence that certain landscape characteristics influence microbial populations in ways that affect greenhouse gas releases and carbon storage. Saltier wetland areas, for example, tend to attract microbial communities that produce less methane, as do areas with more active water flows. “We’re able to predict which sites might produce more or less methane,” Tringe says. Data, however, are still limited, so Tringe cannot definitively say how wetland restoration planners can best limit these releases while keeping carbon storage processes undamaged.
Ultimately, Tringe wants to create computer models allowing experts to analyze the potential greenhouse gas effects of various restoration strategies. But what fires Tringe’s imagination even more than shaping wetlands’ environmental legacy is mapping a microbial universe that has long been hidden.
32. What does the underlined word “secrete” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Give off. B. Take in. C. Figure out. D. Break down.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Wetlands sampling. B. A novel discipline.
C. Metagenomic sequencing. D. Microbial communities.
34. What are Tringe’s key findings about?
A. Wetlands’ capacity for carbon storage.
B. Methane’s great impact on microbial varieties.
C. Predictive computer models for wetland restoration.
D. Links between landscape features and methane releases.
35. What can be inferred about Tringe from the last paragraph?
A. She prioritizes theoretical research.
B. She encounters technological barriers.
C. She innovates wetlands’ restoration strategies.
D. She values exploration of the microbial world more.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
AI tools regularly make mistakes and make up sources. By some estimates, over half of AI-driven answers have factual errors. Children’s exposure to misleading information online isn’t new. ____36____ Even children who are online only for short periods likely see false or inaccurate information. Here’s how to help them spot it.
____37____
Any parent knows the feeling of being caught in a never-ending loop (循环) of whys from their kid. ____38____ Provide informative answers, but build their thought processes, too. “Great question, what do you think? What makes you think that? How would we find out what’s right?” You’ll develop their critical thinking by emphasizing the process of reasoning, not just the outcome.
Encourage skepticism (怀疑).
Children’s skepticism is context-specific. My colleagues and I have demonstrated, for example, that even four-year-olds show basic fact-checking abilities in digital contexts under the right circumstances. When they notice that a platform contained some misinformation in the past, they seek out more evidence before accepting a new claim. ____39____ For example, if you come across a doubtful AI summary, comment on it out loud.
Practice strategic disengagement (脱离).
Critical thinking is slow and deliberate. Scrolling through a social media feed is quite the opposite. Even when a questionable post arouses skepticism, that feeling might fade as soon as a newer piece of content appears. ____40____ Taking frequent breaks can stop the habit of endless, passive consumption. Another simple strategy is to teach children that if something arouses strong emotions, they should pause.
A. Use children’s natural curiosity.
B. But now AI has worsened the problem.
C. When that desire to learn strikes, join in.
D. Evaluate the quality of children’s questions.
E. Show your child you also doubt things online.
F. Ultimately, kids’ presence in the digital landscape is a reality.
G. Parents can help children learn when to slow down and reflect.

Alex loved the school garden more than anything. Every day, Alex would rush to the garden right after class. The garden was usually filled with busy bees and butterflies.
But today, something was wrong. Alex noticed that the garden was quiet. There were no bees buzzing (发出嗡嗡声) around the flowers. There were no butterflies dancing in the air either. “Where did everyone go?” Alex wondered. Ms. Green, the kind teacher who took care of the garden, noticed Alex’s worried face. She gently asked, “Whatˈs wrong, Alex?”
Alex said, “The bees and butterflies are gone! The garden doesnˈt feel happy without their buzz.” Ms. Green nodded slowly and said, “Youˈre right, Alex. The garden does feel a little empty without them. They help the flowers make fruits and seeds (种子). Without them, the garden wouldnˈt be so colorful.” Alex listened carefully and wanted to do something to help the garden.
Ms. Green suggested finding out why the bees and butterflies were gone. Together, they went to the school library. They discovered that bees and butterflies need flowers with sweet nectar (花蜜) and safe places to build nests (巢). With this in mind, they decided to plant more nectar-rich flowers and create a safe space where the insects could rest and make their homes.
The next day, Alex and Ms. Green started their project. Ms. Green showed Alex how to prepare the soil for the new flowers. Alex carefully dug small holes and gently placed the seeds and small plants in them. They planted bright sunflowers, sweet-smelling lavender and colorful zinnias. Bees and butterflies love those flowers!
Then, they started working on making a bee house and a butterfly house. Ms. Green brought some pieces of wood and showed Alex how to build a small wooden house. They made small holes for the bees to get into and comfortable places for the butterflies to rest. The garden was starting to look like a welcoming place for the insects.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
A few weeks later, Alex ran to the garden eagerly.

【答案】
A few weeks later, Alex ran to the garden eagerly. His heart beat fast with excitement. As he got closer to the garden, he heard a familiar sound. It was a soft buzzing sound. Alex looked around and smiled widely. The bees were back! They were flying from flower to flower, collecting nectar. The butterflies were back, too! They danced among the flowers. The garden was alive again. Alex saw a butterfly land on the sunflower that Ms. Green and he had planted together. It was a beautiful sight!
Alex rushed to Ms. Green and told her the wonderful news. Ms. Green smiled warmly. “I knew they would come back if we made the garden a safe and welcoming place for them.” Alex and Ms. Green went to the garden, sat on a seat and watched the bees and butterflies. They felt a great sense of pride and happiness. Alex realized that even a small action can make a big difference in the world. By helping the bees and butterflies, they had made the whole garden lively again.
