Unit 6 Electricity everywhere任务型阅读 (阅读问答+配对阅读) 阅读问答 Passage 1 The Power(力量) of the Wind Light winds help us fly kites in spring and cool us in summer. Strong winds take away people’s lives. Winds can be friendly or dangerous. They can also work for us. Wind power is not new. 5000 years ago, the Chinese first used windmills (风车). In 700 A.D., the Syrians and Persians used them too. In the 17th century (世纪) , the people of the Netherlands built windmills to get seawater. Now we can use the wind to make electricity (电). In many countries, wind turbines (风力发电机) are easy to see. A group of turbines is called a wind farm. Most wind farms are in fields, and some are on the top of mountains. Wind energy (能源) has several advantages(优点). One advantage is that there will always be wind. Wind power is also clean. It doesn’t make air pollution (污染). Farmers like wind power because electric companies(公司) pay them to use their land. Wind power also has some disadvantages. One is that turbines are expensive, although the cost has gone down these years. A second disadvantage is that it can make noise pollution. Today, wind power is growing fast. A lot of countries get their energy from wind. Denmark(丹麦) gets 20% of its energy from wind. China is going to get 26% of its energy from wind in 2030. Maybe one day, all countries will use this safe, clean energy to make electricity. 1.What can we use wind to do now? ________________________________________________ 2.Where are wind farms? ________________________________________________ 3.Is wind energy bad for the air? ________________________________________________ 4.Why do farmers like wind power? ________________________________________________ 5.What do people think of wind power? ________________________________________________ Passage 2 Electricity safety tips Electricity makes our lives easier. We use a lot of electrical appliances in our homes every day. Here are three of them. How can we use them safely? Rice cooker •Keep the outside of the pot dry. •Do not switch the rice cooker on if the pot is empty. Washing machine •Do not put your hand in the washing machine when it is on. •Unplug it when you are not using it. Microwave •Do not turn it on when it is empty, because it might start a fire. •Stand at least one metre away from the microwave when it is on. •Before you put an object in a microwave, make sure it is microwave safe. 1.How many kinds of electrical appliances are mentioned in the text? ________________________________________________ 2.Can we switch the rice cooker on if the pot is empty? ________________________________________________ 3.How far should you stand away from the microwave when it is on? ________________________________________________ 4.Why can’t we turn on the microwave when it is empty? ________________________________________________ Passage 3 Americans love cars. There are over 2,470,000 cars—about one car for 1.2 people in America. But, these cars bring us too much air pollution. We know that cars need oil(石油). Without oil, today’s cars will become tomorrow’s junk(无用的东西). So when American people talk about cars, they often think of electric(电动的) cars. There are some electric cars now, but they can’t run very far or fast. People still think that there will be a lot of electric cars on the road. When the batteries(电池) are better, there will be more and more electric cars on the road. That’s for sure. In the future, there will be another kind of cars, too—flying cars. They can run in the air. But now there is only one company, MDI, trying this kind of cars. What do they look like? Can they run fast? If you want to know the answers to them, you can use your computer to have a look. 1.How many kinds of cars does this passage show us? ________________________________________________ 2.What does the underlined word “pollution” mean in Chinese? ________________________________________________ 3.What is the disadvantage(缺点) of electric cars? ________________________________________________ 4.What’s the second paragraph mainly about? ________________________________________________ 5.Can people buy flying cars now? ________________________________________________ Passage 4 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题,每小题答案不超过10个词。 My Family’s Green Life My family lives a green life to protect the environment. Here are some things we do every day. My parents go to work by bus instead of driving cars. It helps reduce air pollution. I ride my bike to school every day. We always turn off the lights and TV when we leave the room to save electricity. We also reuse water—after washing vegetables, we use the water to clean the floor or water the plants. We also reduce waste. We use reusable bottles and bags when shopping. My mom never buys food with too much packaging. We sort rubbish into different bins: paper, plastic, glass and kitchen waste. On weekends, we sometimes take part in community activities like tree-planting. Living a green life makes us feel happy. We hope more families can join us to make the world greener. 1.How do the writer’s parents go to work? ________________________________________________ 2.How does the writer go to school? ________________________________________________ 3.What do they do to save electricity? ________________________________________________ 4.How do they reuse water in their life? ________________________________________________ 5.What community activity do they sometimes join in? ________________________________________________ Passage 5 Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答问题) For many years scientists have said that the Earth is getting warmer. Now they have found something new-hot cities! In the southern US, they have found that cities become very hot in summer. China also has the same kind of problems. Every year more farming land is used for factories or offices. More housing is needed, too. As people become richer, they buy more cars. New roads are needed and new car parks are built in the city centres. This all makes the cities hotter. It is not easy to change the situation (情形). City planners say that we should plant more trees in the middle of cities. “Every new street should have trees on both sides,” they say. Trees make the temperature lower, so we should have more trees in our parks and squares. Also we should paint our roofs (屋顶) white. If we do this, they do not become so hot. Every roof in a hot and sunny country should have solar (太阳的) roof panels (板). The electricity from these can be used to run the air-conditioners in the building. People continue (继续) to cut down forests around the cities. This makes the problem worse. Cities are growing faster and faster. By the year 2050, 80% of the world’s population will be living in cities. If we go on like this, there will not be enough farmland to feed everyone in the world. Therefore, the city planers suggest that we should plant more trees. 1.What has happened to the Earth? ________________________________________________ 2.Is there more or less farming land in China? ________________________________________________ 3.It is not easy to change the situation, is it? ________________________________________________ 4.What should we do in cities to make the temperature lower? ________________________________________________ 5.What makes the problem worse? ________________________________________________ Passage 6 Baihetan Hydropower Station (白鹤滩水电站) is the world’s second largest hydropower station. The first part of it was put into use in southwest China, on Monday, June 28th, 2021. It is on the Jinsha River in China, between Ningnan County in Sichuan province and Qiaojia County in Yunnan Province. It took only about four years to build the dam (水坝), though it was one of the most difficult engineering projects. The dam is 289 meters high, and the total length of its underground chambers (地下洞室) reaches 217 kilometers. The underground powerhouse is 438 meters long, 88.7 meters high, 34 meters wide above the rock beam (横梁) and 31 meters wide below the rock beam. It is the largest underground chamber group in such projects all over the world. The electricity produced by one 1MW generator (发电机) of the station in one hour can be used by a family for more than 400 years. The dam is a part of a list of dams on the Yangtze River. It is built to help provide electricity to eastern and central China. Also, China wants to prevent the floods during summer. Another reason why China built the dam is to reduce emissions (排放) from burning fossil fuels, such as coal or oil. The station was put into use completely at the end of 2022. 1.Where is the Baihetan Hydropower Station? ________________________________________________ 2.Was it one of the most difficult engineering projects? ________________________________________________ 3.How long are all the underground chambers? ________________________________________________ 4.When was the station put into use completely? ________________________________________________ 5.What do you think of the station? Why? ________________________________________________ Passage 7 Would you like to have an electric (有电的) car? Do you know this kind of quiet and clean cars run on electricity? In the future, more and more people will have cars, so the cars will be in great need. But the oil won’t keep up with the number of cars on the road. So the price of oil will go up. Electric cars aren’t perfect just yet. It can take eight hours to charge (充电) a car for only 100 miles of driving. How far that car travels depends on the weather and traffic. Price is a problem, too. Electric cars cost much more than oil cars. The good news is that electric car technology is getting better. As it does, the prices of this kind of cars are going down.To charge the car, the Department of Energy is paying for at least 10, 000 charging stations around the country. And it will cost people about three dollars for each charge. Now car makers are looking for other ways to make the car cheaper. Then more people will use electric cars, and we’ll have a clean and nice world in the future. 1.Why will the price of oil go up in the future? ________________________________________________ 2.How long can it take to charge a car for only 100 miles of driving? ________________________________________________ 3.How much should people pay for each charge? ________________________________________________ 4.If more people use electric cars, what will the world be like in the future? ________________________________________________ 5.Do you like electric cars or oil cars? Why? ________________________________________________ Passage 8 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答下列问题。注意:每题答案不得超过10个词。 How to Protect the Environment as a Student As students, we may think that we can’t do much to protect the environment. But in fact, there are many small things we can do in our daily lives to make a difference. First, we can save energy. Turn off the lights, computers, and other electrical devices when we are not using them. This can help reduce electricity consumption. We can also save water by turning off the tap when we brush our teeth or wash our hands. Second, we can reduce waste. Bring our own bags when we go shopping instead of using plastic bags. Use reusable water bottles and lunch boxes instead of disposable ones. We can also recycle paper, plastic, glass, and metal. This helps reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills. Third, we can plant trees and flowers. Trees and flowers help improve air quality and provide habitats for animals. We can join tree-planting activities at school or in our community. Fourth, we can walk or ride a bike to school instead of taking a car. This helps reduce air pollution. If we have to take a car, we can carpool with our classmates or family members. Fifth, we can spread awareness about environmental protection. Tell our family and friends about the importance of protecting the environment. We can also organize or participate in environmental protection activities at school, such as poster competitions or lectures. Protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility. As students, we have a duty to do our part. Even small actions can add up and make a big difference. Let’s start today and work together to protect our planet. 1.What can students do to save energy? ________________________________________________ 2.How can students reduce waste? ________________________________________________ 3.Why is planting trees and flowers helpful for the environment? ________________________________________________ 4.What can students do to reduce air pollution when going to school? ________________________________________________ 5.How can students spread awareness about environmental protection? ________________________________________________ 配对阅读 Passage1 下面的材料A—E分别是五个环保建议。 How to Protect the Environment as a Student As students, we may think that we can’t do much to protect the environment.
