Every morning Mario visited his neighbor, Mr. Harper. Together they sat at the edge of his garden on the hill, looking down at the port. They made a game of spotting Mario's dad as he unloaded the morning catch, and Mr.Harper's daughter, Fiona, as she cleaned the fish one after another. "I see them!" Mario would say. Mr. Harper would laugh. "You win again, Mario." It was their favorite game. Mario's dad loved the ocean. He'd say, "Listen, Mario, the ocean's saying good morning." The lapping waves would whisper: O-mor-ning. O-mor-ning. Mario always returned the greeting, "Good morning, ocean." But on the day the big wave came, the ocean didn't whisper. It roared (咆哮). A big, watery hand swept into the port, grabbing everything - and everyone - in its grasp. Everyone lost someone that day. It took Mario's dad, Fiona, and it even took Mario's voice. Silence hung over the village like a dark, heavy cloud. Spring came. Here and there stood peach-trees that broke into delicate flowers of pink. One day: Tap-tap-tap. Bang-bang-bang. Mario watched from his window. Mr. Harper was building something in his garden. But what? It was a phone booth (电话亭), painted white and with many panes (窗格) of glass. Mr. Harper went inside and his voice floated out. "Fiona? It's your father. I miss you." Mario was confused. Fiona had been grabbed by the ocean, just like Mario's dad. When Mr. Harper left, Mario crept inside. An old-fashioned phone sat on a table. No plugs, no wires. It was a phone connected to nowhere. Mr. Harper visited his phone booth every day. Soon other villagers did too. They lifted the receiver to their ears and their voices floated on the wind. "Hello, cousin. Today I fixed the boat. I'll fish again soon." "Sister, how're you? I rode your bike today. It fits me now. For the first time since the big wave came, Mario wanted to use his voice. He went down to the port and screamed at the ocean. "Bring our people back!" Still, the waves lapped gently. O-mor-ning. O-mor-ning. Mario sighed and looked up. Mr. Harper’s phone booth sat high on the hill like a lighthouse. ___________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ As Mario stepped out, he spotted Mr. Harper down at the port.  __________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ 一、原文讲了什么? O-mor-ning。 Mr. Harper’s phone booth sat high on the hill like a lighthouse. Its glass panes glittered in the spring sun, casting small rainbows onto the dewy grass. Feeling a strange pull, Mario climbed the hill, pushed open the glass door, and stepped inside. The receiver felt cold and heavy in his hand, as if holding a piece of frozen time. For a long moment, no words came — only the wind whispering through the cracks. Then, taking a breath, he finally spoke. His voice, rusty from months of silence, barely rose above a whisper. “Dad… the ocean still says ‘O-mor-ning’.” “I couldn’t say it back before… but now, I just wanted you to know — I hear it. And I miss you.” Tears fell, but a knot he hadn’t known was there began to loosen. As Mario stepped out, he spotted Mr. Harper down at the port. The old man stood alone, his gaze fixed on the water that had taken everything. Without a second thought, Mario ran down the hill. Reaching Mr. Harper’s side, he tugged the man’s sleeve gently. Then, pointing to the phone booth, he whispered: “It works.” Mr. Harper turned. His eyes were wet, yet a small, trembling smile broke across his weathered face. He nodded. “I know,” he said quietly. Side by side, they walked back up the hill. O-mor-ning。O-mor-ning。 Behind them, the waves lapped gently, whispering their eternal greeting: O-mor-ning. O-mor-ning. Mr. “Dad… the ocean still says ‘O-mor-ning’. I couldn’t say it back before… but now, I just wanted you to know — I hear it. Then, pointing to the phone booth on the hill, he whispered: “It works.” Mr. Harper turned. His eyes were wet, yet a small, trembling smile broke across his weathered face. He nodded. “I know,” he said quietly. Side by side, they walked back up the hill. Behind them, the waves lapped gently, whispering their eternal greeting: O-mor-ning. O-mor-ning. Many women were crying...the wind was so wild that I could not sleep. The tempest rages in the small crooked streets, shaking the eaves and tearing off the tiles. The shores are strewn with wrecks. The sorrow for the dead is the only sorrow from which we refuse to be divorced. After my father died, I didn’t stop having conversations with him in my head. There are ghosts walking around inside me, but they don’t always talk. We know that tears are vain, that death nor heeds nor distress: Will this unteach us to complain? I didn’t stop seeing him in my dreams or stop hearing his words. Thou who tell‘st me to forget — thy looks are wan, thine eyes are wet. The love which survives the tomb is one of the noblest attributes of the soul. When the overwhelming burst of grief is calmed into the gentle tear of recollection. There are gains for all our losses, there are balms for all our pain. It was a time not of what was there, but of what wasn’t. Calm and deep peace in this wide air... And in my heart, if calm at all, if any calm, a calm despair. Something beautiful is vanished, and we sigh for it in vain. Mr. Harper’s phone booth sat high on the hill like a lighthouse. Angry with the ocean and drained by disappointment, Mario found himself hurrying toward it. At the door, he stopped, almost unable to face what it meant. He wanted to turn away, but the words inside him would not stay quiet. Taking a sharp breath, he stepped in and held the cold receiver with trembling fingers. “Dad...” he whispered. Silence followed. Below, a wave broke softly on the shore. “I shouted at the ocean,” he said, his voice shaking. “I was angry.” Another silence came, with only the wind moving lightly against the glass panes. Then, with tears blurring his eyes, he whispered, “I miss you.” Nothing changed. The sea was still there. His father was still gone. But the words no longer felt locked inside him. As Mario stepped out, he spotted Mr. Harper down at the port. The pain was still there, but it no longer felt too heavy to bear. He walked down the hill toward the pier, where Mr. Harper sat quietly, looking at the water. Hearing footsteps, he turned. Mario stopped beside him. His voice was still soft, but this time it came. “I saw you from the hill,” he said. Then, after a pause, “I see you.” Mr. Harper looked at him for a long moment, and a faint smile crossed his face. “You win again, Mario,” he said quietly. They sat side by side without speaking. The morning sun warmed their backs, and the salty air carried a touch of spring. The sea moved gently before them. At last, Mario lifted his head and looked out at the water. “Good morning, ocean,” he whispered.
