About Anna Sewell
Black Beauty was published in 1877, just five months before Sewell’s death.
Sewell had an accident at age 14 and was unable to walk well for the rest of her life. She was too ill to finish writing the book, so she told the story to her mother who wrote it down for her. It was her only book.

Anna hated helping with the cooking. What she loved best was riding Copper. After Mum died, Dad made it clear to her that she’d be safe. Anna never had the chance to drive the cattle on Copper.
After washing cups and going to her bed, she listened to the men talk about the next day’s work.
“A storm (暴风雨) is coming,” Dad said. “The cattle will be afraid.”
Anna tried to sleep but couldn’t. “The men will need my help!” she thought. But when Dad came, he said no to her help. Anna crossed her arms and looked at the sky. The stars disappeared under the clouds. The wind blew hard. The cattle were nervous (紧张的).
The camp slept—everyone but Anna. Tears ran down her face. Why couldn’t Dad understand? She knew he took Mum’s death seriously (认真地;严肃地), but how could he try to protect Anna from everything? Anna felt a few drops of rain. She got up, took her hat, and went toward her horse. “Copper!” she said. The horse seemed to understand her. Anna rode slowly into the darkness. Pulling her hat down against the rain, she lost herself in memories of riding with her parents.
A loud sound of thunder shook Anna from her thoughts. Copper became nervous too. As lightning lit the land, Anna saw the cattle and felt the same fear. More lightning crashed. The cattle became more nervous and at last some young ones began to run wildly in one direction (方向).
Stampede (动物惊跑)! All of them were coming to the camp!
Anna turned Copper around and raced back, shouting loud. Nearing the camp, Anna saw the men trying to get out of the way. The lightning was bright as daylight. As quickly as she can, Anna rode Copper toward the cattle who were so afraid.
She raced forward with the cattle, shaking her hat at them and trying to change their direction. It was hard, but slowly the young ones followed, and then more followed. Finally, the camp was safe. Dad and all the other men came along and helped the cattle back.
Later, when Anna was making coffee to warm them, Dad looked down at her seriously. Something different was in his usually gentle brown eyes “Good job!” Finally, he pulled Anna into a bear hug (拥抱). “If you forgive (原谅) an old man for loving his girl too much, I’d have you ride with us tomorrow.”
18. How did the father feel when they were back in the camp safely?
A. Very nervous and then surprised. B. Very surprised but finally proud.

a. Anna saved the whole camp.
b. Anna’s Mum died.
c. Dad said no to Anna’s help.

e. Anna was sad and rode out alone.
A. b—d—c—e—a B. b—c—e—d—a

A. She was the first to know the storm.

① Plants use chemicals (化学物质) to talk with each other. This happens when insects are eating a plant’s leaves. Then, the plant gives out chemicals from those leaves. This is like a call for help, “Mayday, mayday!” When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others make the bees interested in the plant. The bees will come and kill those harmful insects. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system (系统). So we can use it to grow more corn.
② More surprisingly, plants also make sounds. But people can’t hear these sounds; Some plants, such as corn and chili plants, make noises with their roots. Some trees make clicking noises when there is little water. Plants, like tomatoes, make a sound when they are weak. When animals like bats hear them, they will come to help. Scientists are trying to listen to these sick plants.
③ Most surprisingly of all, plants have a wonderful talking system. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”, just like the Internet we use. Organisms such as fungi connect (连接) the roots of different plants and make the web under the ground. By using the web, plants can greet each other and give food to others. However, not all plants are friendly. Some may use it to take other plants’ food, or send chemicals to hurt other plants. Probably one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help stop these fights.
④ Scientists are learning more about how plants talk so that they can grow better. Maybe one day we will be able to “talk” with them ourselves.
22. Which sentence can replace (代替) “Mayday, mayday!” in paragraph 1?
A. Come to me, bee! Kill the insects!
B. Let’s celebrate the holiday May Day!
C. Let me give you some food and drinks!
D. Be careful! The insects are eating my leaves!
23. Which of the following about plants’ sounds is TRUE?
A. Some plants can talk to people.
B. Plants like tomatoes make noises for greeting.
C. Some animals can understand plants’ sounds.
D. Scientists can grow healthy plants by talking to them.
24. The following sentence can best be put at the end of ______.
Then they can find new ways to grow healthier plants without touching them.
A. Paragraph ① B. Paragraph ② C. Paragraph ③ D. Paragraph ④
25. Why do scientists want to learn about plants’ talks?
A. To help plants grow better. B. To build a bigger web for plants.
C. To create a “firewall” to stop insects. D. To make plants’ talking system better.
