Tips on Identifying Fake News Online With so much fake news online, it can sometimes be hard to figure out the truth. Concern about the phenomenon led to the announcement made by some tech companies ____11____ they’ll crack down on fake news sites. Fake news is a common occurrence — you see it on your social media feeds, and even on ____12____ (forward) messages on your phone’s group chat. It was even named 2017’s word of the year by dictionary publisher, Collins, ____14____ describes fake news as “false, often sensational, information spread under the guise of news reporting”. Here’s our advice on how to spot a fake. First, check the website and quality of the articles. Look at the sources of the story and read other articles on the site — are they well written with proper citations or are they full of grammatical errors? You should also make sure that you’re on a legal news site. Some fake sites use addresses and even logos that are similar to ____15____ of real news organizations. This trend has been a hard ____31____ to news organizations. Just two months into 2024, several news organizations are already falling apart. The Messenger shut down in January. Buzz Feed announced it would cut 16% of its ____32____ staff. Hundreds of local outlets have not been so lucky, closing their doors as advertising dollars disappear. These news organizations are crucial to the communities—both local and national—that they serve. They work hard to ensure that their platforms are ____33____ in facts and free of abuse. You’re not going to find articles promoting body dysmorphia (身体畸形恐惧症) in the pages of The New York Times. The Wall Street Journal is not going to casually provide carelessly risky investment advice. CNN will not enrich itself through indecent photographs of minors. If any of these companies got involved in such behavior, it would be a major scandal. That would not only leave their reputations scarred but also chase away advertisers. As a result, these organizations ____34____ heavily in content review. But the technology platforms, for some reason, are judged by different rules. It’s not fair to say the road is ____35____ with examples pointing to bad behavior. It’s buried in them. Time and time again, companies like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and others have been caught allowing harmful content to exist on their platforms. In many cases, such content has not only been permitted to exist, but encouraged by powerful algorithms (算法). What happens when the very humans who control the platforms find out about such content and are questioned about it? Well, they often just release vague public statements. Most of them fail to ____36____ the root causes in a meaningful way. As a matter of fact, the advertising dollars that once supported the carefully ____37____ gardens of traditional media outlets have moved to a world which prefers profits and growth over the public good. To be fair, brands would likely prefer to advertise on the platforms of responsible media actors versus the risky world of social media. But Big Tech, with a larger and younger audience, offers these brands much more effective targeting. To make matters worse, news companies have been far too slow to adapt to the changing technological ____38____. They often come with ugly websites and apps and lack the tools necessary for targeting ____39____ audiences that advertisers want to reach. It’s a disaster that will have great impacts on civilization in the years ahead. News organizations, crucial to a functioning society, are being hollowed out (掏空), if not dying. Meanwhile, technology giants, which have allowed for harmful content to gain a foothold in the digital public square, are ____40____. II. Reading Comprehension Section A (15分) Directions: For each blank in the following passages there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context. The Unbelievable Slowness of Thinking People tend to have the sense that their inner thoughts and feelings are much richer than what they can express in real time. Elon Musk has spoken publicly about this “bandwidth (带宽) problem.” Musk is so ____41____ by this problem, in fact, that he has made it one of his long-term goals to create an app that allows the human brain to communicate directly with a computer, ____42____ by the slow speed of speaking or writing. But Musk would probably be ____43____. According to new research published in Neuron, human beings think at a fixed, extremely slow speed of about 10 bits per second. In contrast, human sensory systems gather data at about one billion bits per second. This biological inconsistency might contribute to the ____44____ feeling that our mind can engage in seemingly infinite thoughts at the same time. “The human brain is much less ____45____ than we might think,” says Markus Meister, a neuroscientist at the California Institute of Technology. “It’s incredibly slow when it comes to making decisions, and it’s ridiculously slower than any of the devices we interact with.” He also highlights that our brain can only do one thing — ____46____ — at a time. So even if Musk managed to hook his brain up to a computer, Meister says, he still wouldn’t be able to communicate with it any faster than he could if he used a telephone. The new research builds on decades of psychology studies showing that humans ____47____ notice only a small portion of information from their sensory experience. “We can only pay attention to so much, and that’s what becomes our conscious experience and enters memory,” Meister says. Meister collected data from studies across different ____48____, including psychology, neuroscience, technology, and human performance. From research over nearly a century, they found that human cognition has repeatedly been ____49____ as functioning between about 5 and 20 bits per second, with an average figure of around 10 bits per second. “This was a very surprising number,” Zheng says. _____50_____ this finding, a conclusion has been drawn that the total amount of information a person can learn across their lifetime could comfortably _____51_____ a small thumb drive (USB flash disk). Human sensory systems such as sight, smell, and sound, _____52_____, operate much faster, the authors found-about 100,000,000 times the rate that cognition does. “When you put these numbers together, you realize, oh my god, there’s this huge gap,” Meister says. The rich information relayed by our senses also contributes to a false notion that we _____53_____ the extreme detail and contrast all around us. But that’s “demonstrably not true,” Meister says. When people are asked to describe what they see outside of the center of their gaze, they “barely make out anything,” he says. “_____54_____, we could be having lots of different thoughts and direct our cognition in lots of different ways, but in practice, we can only have one thought at a time,” Meister says. Another problem that contributes to our overinflated sense of our own mind, he adds, is that we have no marker of comparison. There’s no way to step outside ourselves to _____55_____ that this is really not much to be so proud of.” he says. 41. A. outlined B. bothered C. justified D. overcome 42. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants, I was used to living in two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side faded away, inch by inch. While I happily accepted the bills tucked in red envelopes that adults gave to children for Lunar New Year and consumed my weight in mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival, I didn’t feel connected to the culture. Before my children were born I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin (普通话). I felt that they ought to be able to speak the language of their grandparents, the first language their mother encountered. Parenting books advised narrating your actions while with your baby, so I started digging out long-buried words: “ball”, “eat”, “sleep”, “play”. However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more and more obvious. One morning, when my daughter asked “What is the word for ‘arm’?” I panicked. Had I already reached the boundaries of my knowledge? Luckily, these days the ready availability of Chinese language media — from books to television shows to music — is a much-needed boon to parents like me: second-generation immigrants who want to pass the language on to their children. The first time I stepped into the local library in my Bay Area hometown, I was amazed to find a well-stocked Chinese section in the children’s wing. The tale of the Monkey King and the legend of Chang’e immediately caught my daughter’s imagination. When I see my son converse with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent. My youngest child recited Li Bai’s “Quiet Night Thoughts” for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool last fall. For generations of Chinese children, it’s the first piece of literature they memorize. It’s performed for all occasions, but most often for the Moon Festival. Its four lines describe how the glow of the full moon reminds the poet of his distant home. Decades ago, my Chinese teacher explained to me how the steadfast (坚定不移的) moon connects all those who seek its light, no matter how far apart they are. So, too, does language. It influences culture and history and memory, and connects future generations to past ones. Before my bed the bright moon’s glow Seems like frost on the ground Raising my head, I gaze at the moon Lowering my head, I think of home My son’s voice rang out with confidence and his arms swept up to indicate the moon above. Joy and wonder lit up my father’s face as he listened to the familiar verses from the mouth of his grandson: verses that had been spoken by my father and my grandparents when they were students in China, and by countless boys and girls before that. 56. We can learn from the first paragraph that the author ________. A. was brought up in an all-English environment B. once lost her sense of belonging to Chinese culture C. was deeply attracted by Chinese culture when she was a child D. preferred Lunar New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival to any other festival 57. According to the article, how did the author teach her children Mandarin? ①By sending them to a Chinese school in the Bay Area. ②By bringing them to the local library to read Chinese books. ③By speaking the words of her actions in Mandarin while with them. ④By making use of Chinese language media, such as books, television shows and music. A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④ 58. According to the article, when she realized that her children were very interested in Chinese culture, the author ________. A. felt reconnected to Chinese culture B. was full of hope for the inheritance of Chinese culture C. thought of her own experience of learning Chinese as a child D. felt that all her efforts to teach them Mandarin had been worth it 59. What’s the main idea of this article? A. Language plays an important role in passing down family traditions. B. Language and culture are capable of connecting people throughout time and space. C. Learning Chinese poems is a great way to deepen your knowledge of the Chinese language. D. Knowing the Chinese language will provide you with a better understanding of Chinese culture. (C) As the sun set he remembered, to give himself more confidence, the time in the tavern at Casablanca when he had played the hand game with the great negro from Cienfuegos who was the strongest man on the docks. They had gone one day and one night with their elbows on a chalk line on the table and their forearms straight up and their hands gripped tight. Each one was trying to force the other’s hand down onto the table. There was much betting and people went in and out of the room under the kerosene lights and he had looked at the arm and hand of the negro and at the negro’s face. They changed the referees every four hours after the first eight so that the referees could sleep. Blood came out from under the fingernails of both his and the negro’s hands and they looked each other in the eye and at their hands and forearms and the bettors went in and out of the room and sat on high chairs against the wall and watched. The walls were painted bright blue and were of wood and the lamps threw their shadows against them. The negro’s shadow was huge and it moved on the wall as the breeze moved the lamps. The odds would change back and forth all night and they fed the negro rum and lighted cigarettes for him. Then the negro, after the rum, would try for a tremendous effort and once he had the old man, who was not an old man then but was Santiago El Campeon, nearly three inches off balance. But the old man had raised his hand up to dead even again. He was sure then that he had the negro, who was a fine man and a great athlete, beaten. And at daylight when the bettors were asking that it be called a draw and the referee was shaking his head, he had unleashed his effort and forced the hand of the negro down and down until it rested on the wood. The match had started on a Sunday morning and ended on a Monday morning. Many of the bettors had asked for a draw because they had to go to work on the docks loading sacks of sugar or at the Havana Coal Company. Otherwise everyone would have wanted it to go to a finish. But he had finished it anyway and before anyone had to go to work. For a long time after that everyone had called him The Champion and there had been a return match in the spring. But not much money was bet and he had won it quite easily since he had broken the confidence of the negro from Cienfuegos in the first match. After that he had a few matches and then no more. He decided that he could beat anyone if he wanted to badly enough and he decided that it was bad for his right hand for fishing. He had tried a few practice matches with his left hand. But his left hand had always been a traitor and would not do what he called on it to do and he did not trust it. Quoted from The Old Man and the Sea 63. Since the old man is the main character, in the hand game, why does Hemingway put more efforts in describing his opponent the negro? A. Because Hemingway himself is an anti-racist who wants to support the colored race. B. By doing so, he indirectly shows how strong and determined the old man is to readers. C. He shifts readers’ attention to a new character to neutralize the nervous atmosphere. D. There is no need to describe the old man because he is well-known to all readers. 64. What does the underlined word “unleashed” in paragraph 2 mean? A. spare B. restrict C. reduce D. loose 65. Which of the followings is TRUE according to the passage? A. Many bettors were afraid of losing their money so they wanted to call the game a draw. B. The old man had owed his victory over the negro more to his will than to his strength. C. The referee had been convinced by the bettors that the game be considered a draw D. Regular hand games should be a good practice to enhance the old man’s fishing skills 66. What can be inferred from the whole passage? A. The old man defeated the negro more than once in the matches with his will power B. Many workers working on the docks had showed no respect towards the old man. C. The old man had to self-feed himself a lot so as to stay competitive in the game. D. The negro was not as strong and athletic as the old man had expected him to be. (D) At the start of nearly every doctor’s visit, chances are you will be asked to step on a scale and get your weight measured for that day’s exam record. But many conversations around weight have become an obstacle, not a help, in the campaign to make people healthier. Higher body masses are associated with increased risk for diseases like hypertension, diabetes and coronary disease. Many studies of hundreds of thousands of patients have shown that heavier people are at higher risk for these illnesses. But the big picture is not the whole picture. Researchers have identified a subset of obese people considered to be “metabolically healthy”—meaning they do not exhibit elevated blood pressure or the diabetes indicator called insulin resistance, for example. Although the numbers vary greatly depending on the study, the “metabolically healthy” population could account for anywhere from 6 to 75 percent of obese individuals. One interesting report published in 2016 found that a higher body mass index (or BMI, the ratio of weight to height) “only moderately increased the risks for diabetes among healthy subjects” and that unhealthy thin people were twice as likely to get diabetes as healthy fat people. Clearly, there is more to the equation than weight. Despite such findings, doctors routinely recommend dieting for weight loss as a means to “treat” poor health indicators such as high cholesterol and insomnia in fat patients. Virtually no diet works in the long term. The result: 95 to 98 percent of those who attempt to lose weight fail, and up to two thirds end up heavier than when they began. Spending years trapped in a cycle of losing weight, regaining it, then losing it again is associated with poorer health outcomes. It is time that doctors give up the scale-centric health care practice and focus on behaviors that have proven positive outcomes for health. Among the more dangerous by-products of weight-centric health care are the increased shame experienced by the overweight. The well-reported anecdotal experience of innumerable fat people is that doctors often prescribe weight loss without examining them, running tests or performing other normal procedures for conditions that thin people would be screened for automatically. Research over the past two decades has shown that health professionals have negative attitudes toward fat people, as the authors of a large review paper wrote in 2013 in Current Obesity Reports. Not only that but doctors’ appointments with fat patients are shorter on average, and physicians routinely use negative words in their medical histories of such people. Such practices keep people from regular annual exams and prevent the detection of serious underlying conditions. To practice evidence-based medicine, doctors should stop relying on weight alone as an indicator of health. Instead practitioners should focus on behavioral changes to improve health outcomes. 67. By “the big picture is not the whole picture” (paragraph 2), the writer means that_______. A. there are some exceptions B. more evidence should be presented C. some health risk has been neglected D. people don’t care much about health 68. Why does the writer mention the report published in 2016? A. To call attention to those who are thin but unhealthy. B. To explain what “moderately increase” means in real life. C. To argue against BMI being used as an indicator of fatness. D. To show that weight may not be associated with poor health. 69. What can be inferred from the passage about fat people? A. Most of them worry about their weight. B. Some of them can’t be diagnosed correctly. C. They need at least one exam every half year D. They don’t follow doctors’ recommendations. 70. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Weight-watching health care is common but may do harm. B. More care should be taken of those overweight people. C. Fat people are sometimes treated unfairly in society. D. It’s time that we should be more health-conscious. (E) Directions: Read the following passage. Bunny Power: White Rabbit’s Reinvention When it comes to images of rabbits, many Chinese people would think of White Rabbit, a well-known brand of sweets. As one of the few old brands still thriving, White Rabbit has a thing or two to teach other companies about how to stay popular among consumers. China’s first domestic toffees (太妃糖) were produced in 1943 with Mickey Mouse on the wrapper. ____71____ The stylized blue-and-white cartoon bunny became an icon. In 1972, Zhou Enlai, then China’s premier, presented White Rabbits to Richard Nixon on his first visit to China. The fortunes of the sweet soured in the 1970s. As foreign goods flooded in, White Rabbits lost their popularity. Guan Sheng Yuan, the state-owned company that makes them, used the treat’s nutritional property as its selling point. It said seven sweets equals a glass of milk in terms of protein content. The strategy, however, didn’t work well. ____72____ The brand was even affected by the food safety scandals of a brand of powdered milk in 2008. However, the bunnies fought back. In 2018, the first batches of White Rabbit lip balm (润唇膏) sold out within hours. The following year, the producer teamed up with Godiva, a chocolate company, to make White Rabbit ice cream, and people queued for hours to buy the newly launched White Rabbit milk tea at a shop in Shanghai. ____73____ In 2021, Guan Sheng Yuan opened a shop in Shanghai selling a wide range of branded products. The rabbit has reinvented itself many times. Most recently, it has taken advantage of the trend of guo chao, which has been applied to trendy consumer goods with traditional Chinese cultural elements. It also teamed up with the American fashion company Coach, helping it to produce giant bunnies on handbags as well as dresses, denim jackets and a gold White-Rabbit necklace. Tapping into a sense of nostalgia (怀旧), the collaboration gave Coach a boost in the Chinese market. ____74____ Looking to the future, SK-II, a Japanese skincare brand, launched a limited-edition White Rabbit face serum. Foreign markets provide an additional carrot. The candies have diversified into a whole range of flavors, including peanut, red bean, mustard and durian, and are exported to more than 50 countries. That’s a whole different rabbit hole. A. The sweets quickly gained popularity across the country. B. For a time, the sweets had trouble finding favor with customers. C. The sweet maker took the opportunity to open more shops in other cities. D. At the same time, it enabled White Rabbits to gain new followers across the Pacific. E. The company has since launched perfumes, a shower gel and hand cream. F. When this American image fell out of favor in the 1950s, da baitu, a big white rabbit, took its place. Ⅲ. Summary Writing (6分) Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea of each paragraph in one complete sentence. The advantages of social networking 75. Why do most people sign up to social networking sites? The main reason is to stay in touch with other people. These sites also help people to find their childhood friends that they have lost touch with. Renewing these long-lost friendships is just a click away. It is very exciting to be able to catch up with friends and keep up with their news on an almost daily basis thanks to frequent updates. __________________________________________________________________________________________ 76. Keep up-to-date, however, doesn’t have to be restricted to friends and acquaintances. What many people tend to forget is that they can also use networking sites for professional reasons. It is actually a great way of finding out about upcoming job opportunities. Friends might know about job vacancies that may not be advertised elsewhere or they can even recommend their friends for certain jobs. Even people already employed can promote their business online. This is particularly important for artists, actors and musicians who can create pages devoted to their band or theatre company, and inform fans about their gigs (现场演出) or latest exhibitions. In addition, the sites can be used to allow the public to give instant feedback on the artists’ work and to interact with their favourite artist. __________________________________________________________________________________________ 77. Another great advantage of social networking sites is how easy it is to organize an event with your friends. Thanks to different settings people can organize their friends by different criteria. These criteria could be how close friends they are, common interests and hobbies or where they live. This means if a certain event takes place, for example, an open-air concert or a football match, all they have to do is invite the right group of friends to attend. Some networking sites offer a range of quizzes and games, so friends living on opposite sides of the globe can invite each other to participate and compete in a variety of games without leaving their homes. __________________________________________________________________________________________ IV. Besides, proper machines can offer healthy choices, making our school life more comfortable and enjoyable. We should remember to choose healthy food and avoid too many snacks. With reasonable use, vending machines will bring great convenience to our daily school life. In short, I believe this plan is good for students and will make our campus life better. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
