I felt my whole body was flying! It was so wonderful! Some students in my class were also afraid of doing it at first. We just cheered them on and encouraged them. In the end, everyone in my class enjoyed it. The other activity was called High Ropes. You need to walk on a wire in midair. To make yourself safe, you should hold the ropes hanging in the tree. Every time you walk on and take hold of the next rope, the space between the ropes becomes longer. I once missed a rope and fell from the wire. My heart was in my mouth! Thanks to the protection equipment (设备), I didn’t fall to the ground. I pulled myself up and kept going. When I arrived at the final place, I felt so pleased. Whether at school, in the car, or in front of screens, people spend more time seated than ever before. While sitting feels comfortable, growing evidence suggests that too much sitting is harmful to health — even for those who exercise regularly. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine followed nearly 8,000 adults for over a decade. The researchers found that the longer participants sat each day, the higher their risk of dying from all causes, no matter how much they exercised. In fact, those who sat for more than 13 hours a day had a 200% greater risk of death compared to those who sat for less than 11 hours. Surprisingly, even an hour of hard exercise could not completely relieve the harm caused by long-term sitting. Why is sitting so harmful? When you sit for extended periods, your body’s large muscles — especially those in your legs and back — remain inactive. This inactivity slows down metabolism (新陈代谢), reduces the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, and weakens the cardiovascular (心血管的) system. Over time, these changes increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even some cancers. But the news is not all bad. Small changes can make a big difference. Researchers recommend breaking up long periods of sitting with short “activity snacks” — just two to five minutes of light walking or standing every hour. Even small movements like tapping your feet while seated have been shown to improve blood flow. The key is to avoid remaining in a chair for hours non-stop. Some workplaces have introduced standing desks and walking meetings, but students face a unique challenge. Long school days require sitting in classrooms for hours. However, teachers can add short movement breaks between lessons, and students can stand while reading or discussing. If you keep making these small changes over time, you can significantly reduce the health problems caused by sitting too much. In a world that encourages sitting, the best way is to be mindful. Every minute spent out of a chair is a benefit in long-term health. 32. What can we learn from the study mentioned in Paragraph 2? A. Exercising regularly can completely protect people from the harm of sitting. B. The risk of death increases with the number of hours spent sitting each day. C. People who sit less than 11 hours a day have no risk of dying from diseases. D. Hard exercise is more important than reducing sitting time. 33. What does the passage suggest to reduce the health risks of sitting too much? A. Take short breaks of light walking or standing every hour. B. Stand up only during reading or discussion in class. C. Do at least one hour of hard exercise every day. D. Sit for a long time without a break. 34. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A. To compare different studies on sitting and health. B. To explain why sitting is comfortable but dangerous. C. To prove that exercise cannot make up for the harm of sitting. D. To encourage people to reduce sitting time through small changes. 【答案】32. B 33. A 34. 【32题详解】 第二段指出:“The researchers found that the longer participants sat each day, the higher their risk of dying from all causes...”,说明每天久坐时间越长,死亡风险越高。 【33题详解】 第四段指出:“Researchers recommend breaking up long periods of sitting... just two to five minutes of light walking or standing every hour.”,明确建议每小时短暂散步或站立来打断久坐。 【34题详解】 第四、五段介绍了改善久坐的小方法,最后一段呼吁有意识减少久坐,全文旨在倡导人们通过微小改变减少久坐、守护健康。 D As a psychologist who has spent the better part of two decades studying stress and resilience (恢复力) in my Health and Human Performance Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University, I explore how expressing our feelings can change our experience. Sometimes, as research shows, the words we choose to describe our lives can shape our mental health for months and years to come. It can help us manage heated moments and also supports healing from life’s hardest situations. Research published over the past 40 years on expressive disclosure — in other words, using your words — shows it can lead to significant health improvements, especially for those dealing with stressful life events. After writing about a challenging situation, people report fewer doctor visits, reduced pain and stronger immune (免疫) function. When we express troubling experiences, whether by writing or by speaking, we aren’t simply recalling a memory. We are pulling it up from long-term memory, reshaping it with our words and then putting it back into long-term memory as a new memory. This process, known as memory reconsolidation, gives us a window of time to change how that memory is structured. When we describe painful or overwhelming events, we reorganize them, we add meaning, emotional context and resolution. In doing so, we can reduce the pain these memories cause and make them easier to live with. Besides, recent review shows these newer expressive writing programs have small but meaningful effects on improving results for emotional well-being among kids ages 10 to 18 years old. There’s even a sign that these programs can improve school achievement among kids who have significant emotional problems. Parents can try a bedtime talk with your child: “What was the hardest part of your day?” Gently explore it with them: “What were you feeling when that happened?” These small moments can build a child’s emotional vocabulary and can help build a new family approach to relating to emotional lives. When using their words helps them get what they want or helps them solve a problem, it creates its own reward cycle. Over time these small moments of language aren’t just about solving problems; they help our kids start to see themselves as skilled actors in their own stories, which, as research shows, is a starting point for lasting well-being. 35. What does the writer say about the words we use to describe our lives? A. They can influence our health for a long time. B. They are mainly used to manage heated moments. C. They have no effect on how we recall memories. D. They are more helpful for children than for adults. 36. The phrase “memory reconsolidation” in Paragraph 3 probably means ___________. A. the ability to recall memories more quickly B. the process of forgetting painful memories C. the act of storing a memory without any change D. the way of reshaping a memory into a new form 37. Which of the following statements would the writer agree with? A. Writing about painful events makes them harder to forget. B. Expressive writing programs work best for children under 10. C. Talking about feelings can help children do better at school. D. Solving problems is more important than building emotional vocabulary. 38. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. B My school went on a camp in the north of the city last Friday. We did simple things like cooking food in the bush and sleeping in tents. Among all of them, I enjoyed the two exciting activities most. One of the activities was called Flying Fox. When you are taking part in the activity, you are connected to a wire (金属线) that begins from the top of a mountain to the ground. Then you jump off the mountain. There are very strong ropes so you are very safe. Before I went on the Flying Fox, I was a bit afraid. My classmates kept on encouraging me. So I closed my eyes and jumped. I thought it was like life: you just have to keep going no matter what happens. This camp was really enjoyable. I hope I can go to more camps in the future. 29. How did the writer feel just before jumping in the “Flying Fox”? A. Calm and excited to start. B. Very safe because of the strong ropes. C. A little scared, but classmates cheered her on. D. Too scared to jump, and only watched others. 30. After missing a rope in the “High Ropes”, what did the writer do? A. She fell down and was injured. B. She gave up and called for help to get down. C. She was caught by the safety gear, got up and kept moving. D. She got help from her friend who put her back onto the wire. 31. What does the writer learn from the experience? A. We can push ourselves further. B. We should enjoy exciting camp activities. C. We should cheer for our friends in need. D. We should follow the safety rules of outdoor activities. C Modern lifestyles have made sitting an unavoidable part of daily life. D As a psychologist who has spent the better part of two decades studying stress and resilience (恢复力) in my Health and Human Performance Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University, I explore how expressing our feelings can change our experience. A. The Health Power of Putting Feelings into Words B. Why Expressive Writing Is Better Than Talking C. How to Help Children Manage Their Emotions D. The Science Behind Memory and Health 第三部分(共20分) 八、阅读表达(共10分,第51-53题每小题2分,第54题4分) 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。 The UK: Where Tradition Meets Adventure In 2017 a record number of over 41 million tourists from abroad visited the United Kingdom. This number fell to a new low of nearly 6.4 million in 2021, but since then numbers have greatly risen to just under 30 million in 2022 and are likely to reach 35 million in 2023.
