Five years ago,it would have been more likely that I’d be turning out for Chelsea Football Club than attending the RHS Chelsea flower show, let alone building a garden there. As a promising young footballer, gardening was not part of my vocabulary.
It was after a disaster that I found gardening to be a form of relief. The night of 14 June,2017 changed my life forever. The Grenfell Tower fire took the lives of 72 people.Living nearby,I was completely broken.I took to the streets to be among others in my attempt to find some comfort or peace of mind. What I encountered changed my attitude entirely.
With no thought or plan,I channelled my energy into greening and beautifying a deserted, unloved community space.I honestly didn’t have a clue what I was doing, but that didn’t matter.I journeyed to every garden centre within reach, asking for plants to be donated to our newly developed community space. The response was strong.People would walk past and share a smile or some conversation.Phone numbers were exchanged and group chats were created.Dates and times were set for organised gatherings to share our stories, knowledge and history.
What’s eye-catching in the garden is a mangrove(红树林) sculpture.Made with wood from deforested mangroves,it aims to raise awareness of the harmful impact we are having on the world as we continue to cut down our trees for profit. The building of the garden has been a community effort, and shows what can be done when people pull together and do something positive.
If visitors take one thing from the garden,I hope it is the awareness that we can come together as a community not just to respond to a disaster, but for the future generations who will have to live with the consequences of our actions today.

A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly.The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems.Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.
“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just the sum of a bunch of individual components(元件),” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade.A few years ago,his team got the go-ahead to start piecing together the components.“The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” he said.
They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly.“The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of interdependencies on the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems.Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.
While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small,off-board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built-in power source,so that it might someday perform data-gathering work at rescue sites,in farmers’ fields or on the battlefield.“Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.
Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect-scale.Yet,the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications.“You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know,to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,”he said.“So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day-to-day basis.”
28.The difficulty the team of engineers met with while making the robotic fly was that .
A.they had no model in their mind
B.they did not have sufficient time
C.they had no ready-made components
D.they could not assemble the components
29.It can be inferred from Paragraphs 3 and 4 that the robotic fly .
A.consists of a flight device and a control system
B.has been put into wide application
C.can collect information from many sources
D.can just fly in limited areas at the present time
30.Which of the following can be learned from the passage?
A.The robotic fly er is designed to learn about insects.
B.Animals are not allowed in biological experiments.
C.There used to be few ways to study how insects fly.
D.Wood’s design can replace animals in some experiments.
31.What is Wood’s attitude towards the study of the robotic flyer?
A.Critical B.Anxious C.Positive D.Negative

Many people assume today’s easy long-distance collaboration(合作) should produce an unmatched flood of innovative scientific research—but, oddly,a new study suggests the opposite may be true.
The study, conducted by University of Pittsburgh social scientist Lingfei Wu and his colleagues, suggests that remote collaboration may,in fact, limit disruptive(创新的) discoveries. The researchers analyzed 20 million research papers over several decades, scoring them on their “disruptiveness”,or how much they go beyond earlier work and lead to new paths of research.
The findings show that as the physical distance between collaborators increases to 600 kilometers or more, the likelihood of their research being disruptive declines by about 25%.This trend holds across different fields, team sizes, and time periods.Wu’s team also found that researchers working together in person were more likely to engage in conceptual tasks, which are more likely to foster disruptive ideas, while remote collaborators focused more on technical tasks like data analysis.
Additionally, the study revealed that in-person collaboration better integrated junior researchers into conceptual work, fostering new talent. In contrast, remote collaboration led to less idea-sharing,particularly when there was a large gap in seniority between collaborators. This finding, according to University of Arizona sociologist Erin Leahey, highlights the importance of face-to-face interactions in fostering new ideas and guiding young researchers.
The findings challenge the assumption that merely connecting people online leads to the growth of new ideas.“There’s something missing in this approach,” Wu says.In theory, remote collaboration enables more new combinations of knowledge—but Wu believes it also makes it harder to put the pieces together.“If you want to encourage ground-breaking innovation, you’ve got to bring people together,” he says.“You cannot just rely on digital system.”
32.How did Wu’s team evaluate the research papers?
A.By examining the publication years.
B.By assessing the collaboration approaches.
C.By scoring the collaboration levels.
D.By analyzing the contributions to new research.
33.What activity are in-person collaborators more likely to participate in?
A.Developing innovative concepts.
B.Conducting data analysis.
C.Reviewing past research.
D.Preparing research reports.
34.What can be inferred about face-to-face interactions in research collaboration?
A.They are less important for junior researchers.
B.They reduce the reliance on digital communication tools.
C.They help generate new ideas and instruct junior researchers.
D.They primarily enhance technical skills and data analysis.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Digital systems are essential and reliable for innovation.
B.In-person collaboration drives more research innovation.
C.In-person collaboration can support junior researchers better.
D.Combination of remote and in-person collaboration brings innovation.

Perfectly Pan-fried Tofu
The familiar smell of garlic, soy sauce, and onion filled the air as I opened my lunch bag to see what my mom had packed for me.On any other occasion,I would have been delighted to eat my mom’s braised(炖) pan-fried tofu:a Korean dish that I often ate for dinner. But not today, the day a nice girl had invited me,the new girl at school,to sit with her friends during lunch.
“Charis over here!” My new friend was waving her arms, trying to get my attention.
As I prepared to walk over to the table, memories of elementary and middle school lunch times came back to me.I remembered my embarrassment as my friends would hold their noses,or simply run away from me when I brought home-made Korean food.I remembered how my embarrassment shifted to anger when I complained about the smell to my mom.
I had argued with my mom that I wanted “normal” food for lunch.I remembered the look on my mom’s face,a mix between disappointment and confusion. But I was determined and she gave in because she worried about my making new friends every time we moved. So for the remainder of middle school,my mom packed smell-less,non-Korean food like ham and cheese sandwiches. However, that day,she was in a rush to get to her new job and packed me leftovers from dinner.
As soon as I got to my new lunch table,I tried to sneak my brightly colored lunch bag down under my seat before anyone noticed the strong smell.I looked up to see the other girls at the table, opening their normal American lunches—from cheese sandwiches to chicken salad tortilla wraps(鸡肉沙拉卷饼) to waffles and fresh fruit sandwiches, everything just looked so normal and so American.I sat quietly, trying not to be noticed when Katrina,my new friend, asked where my food was.

M:What’s the weather like in Prague?
W:Well, when I arrived in Prague, it was minus seven degrees and there was lots of snow. But in summer, the sun shines, and you can sit outside in the cafes. The weather in autumn is fantastic.
(Text 2)
W:What about these shirts, Jonathan?
M:They’re really nice, but isn’t £35 quite expensive? We usually only spend about £25.
W:Look at these others—they’re £15, but they’re not so good.
M:Yeah, I see what you mean. OK, we’ll get the ones you suggest.
(Text 3)
W:What do you think I should wear—this long skirt and a sweater, or a short skirt and shirt?
M:Well, we’re going walking, so I think you’d be better in jeans than a skirt—and a warm sweater. You don’t want to get cold.
W:Oh, OK.
(Text 4)
M:How much are these shoes?
W:Oh, they are 35 dollars a pair.
M:Do you have size 9?
W:I’m afraid they are sold out.
(Text 5)
M:Hi, I’m thinking of taking a trip during the New Year holiday.
W:Where would you like to go?
M:Well, maybe somewhere warm and sunny.
W:How about a tour to Southeast Asia?
(Text 6)
M:Hi, Lucy. How are you? I was wondering...
W:⑥Oh, no! That usually means you want something.
M:No, well, not exactly. I’m going to a wedding and I could go on my motorcycle, but you know how it is—best suit and all that.
W:So you want to borrow my camera? You kept it for weeks last time.
M:Well, ⑥actually I was wondering if I could use your car.
W:⑦Why don’t you take a taxi?
M:⑦Oh, OK, I guess I don’t have much choice.
(Text 7)
W:You look upset. What’s the matter?
M:Nothing special. ⑧I’m just a bit fed up.
W:With the job?
M:⑧With everything, with catching the same train every morning, sitting in the same office all day, watching the same television programs... It’s always like this, you know.
W:What do you mean?
M:Well, our great-great-grandfathers had more fun, didn’t they? I mean, they hunted for their food and grew their own vegetables and did things for themselves. But we do the same sort of job for years and years. There is no variety in our lives.
W:⑨You need a holiday. That’s what your matter is.
(Text 8)
W:Hi, Mr Smith.
M:⑩Hi, Debra.I just dropped by to see how you’re getting along with your packing. Need any help?
W:No, everything’s OK. Thanks. But I’ve got a lot more things to take home than I’d thought. It’ll probably be a little overweight.
MYou know that as long as the two cases are less than 40 kg, that’s all right for flights to America. You can have a handbag and a small backpack as carry-ons, too.
W:Then that won’t be a problem.
M:Now, when did you say your flight leaves?
WLet me see...at 10:30 a.m.
M:I’ll come by and pick you up at 8:30 a.m. Then we can arrive early enough to check in without rushing.
W:Thanks, Mr Smith. You don’t have to bother, though. I can call a taxi.
M:Look, I don’t have anything scheduled for tomorrow morning,so it won’t be any trouble picking you up.
W:Good old Mr Smith, always so helpful!
(Text 9)
W:I’m calling for some information. I’d like to find out about your services for hotels.
M:OK. Can you tell me a little more? What type of hotels?
W:Well, a chain of four-and five-star hotels. We’re based in Switzerland, but on your website you don’t have an operator in Switzerland, so I think Italy is the nearest.
M:That’s right, yes. We are in Florence.
W:Good. Well, we’re interested in updating our current fitness rooms for guests. Our current equipment is rather out of date and our customers often comment on this.
M:OK. How many hotels are we talking about?
WWe currently have eight hotels with fitness equipment, and three others that need it.
M:And what budget do you have for this?
W:That’s difficult to say, actually. Would it be possible for someone to come and have a look?
M:Yes, of course. Actually, we’re coming to Switzerland next month. We already have a customer in Zurich. Is that near you?
W:Not too far. I’m in Bern. It’s only a couple of hours away.
M:Fine. Can we arrange a meeting then?
WSure. Let’s see...

M:Good morning, and welcome to our program. Today, we have pop star Margie Flynn join us in the studio. Her hit single, Hold My Heart, has been at the top of the charts since it was released earlier this month, and has sold over five million copies worldwide. Margie grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and has been a big fan of country music since she was a small child. When Margie was only five years old, her father bought her first guitar. At six, Margie had already written and performed three songs. In high school, Margie spent most of her time on her music, leaving little time for sports or social life. However, she always did her schoolwork and always got good grades. Margie graduated from high school at 17 and went on to attend Juilliard School of Music in New York. Margie has recently completed her studies and is now on tour in the United States. At 22, Margie Flynn is one of America’s youngest and most promising talents, and we’re honored to have her in the studio with us today. Hello, Margie...

Can AI Create Art?
Recently, the English Society at our school hosted a lively debate on the topic,“Can artificial intelligence create art?” The event drew an enthusiastic audience of around 600 students.
The affirmative team argued that AI can generate innovative and valuable artwork through algorithms and data analysis. The negative team, however, contended that true art requires human emotion, soul, experience, and intention, which AI lacks.
After a heated exchange and Q&A session, the judges declared the negative team the winner due to their strong reasoning and persuasive delivery. The debate sparked interest in AI and creativity, encouraging students to think critically about technology’s role in art and life.
第二节【参考范文】
“I’m not really hungry,” I replied in a weak voice. But Katrina had already seen me carry my lunch,so she called out,“Then,I’ll eat it!” The other girls laughed. Not wanting to be rude to potential new friends,I reluctantly opened my lunch bag.As soon as I lifted the lid a bit,a strong smell wafted out and the girls looked curiously at the container.I braced for disgusted comments or rejection, but to my surprise,Katrina immediately grabbed a piece of tofu and ate it eagerly. What’s more, she even encouraged the others at the table to try my lunch.
It took me a second to recognize that my foreign,Korean food was not being rejected. In fact,it had become a source of personal pride. My new friends marvelled at my lucky lunch, loving the tasty tofu.Chatting and sharing,we swapped lunches;I got bites of American food.Although I didn’t eat my mom’s tofu,I was proud and grateful. When Mom asked about lunch, sounding guilty,I beamed,“Mom,it was perfect!” I was touched that her cooking built friendships too.
