When I first entered Beijing Vocational School of Art last September, I felt lost. I chose the design major but didn’t know how to develop my skills. One afternoon, I saw a poster for the school’s “Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Club” — it taught paper-cutting, a traditional Chinese craft. Out of curiosity, I decided to sign up for it.
The club met every Wednesday afternoon in Room 203. Our teacher, Ms. Li, was a paper-cutting artist with 20 years of experience. At first, I struggled a lot: my scissors kept slipping, and the paper always tore. I even wanted to quit. But Ms. Li said, “Be patient — paper-cutting takes practice, not talent.” She showed me how to hold the scissors correctly and start with simple patterns, like small flowers.
After two months of practice, I could cut more complex designs: red Chinese knots for festivals, and zodiac animals like rabbits. Last December, the club held a paper-cutting competition at school. I spent three nights making a piece called “Spring Festival Blessings” — it had lanterns, couplets, and a fat pig (a symbol of good luck). To my surprise, I won the second prize!
Through the club, I learned more than just paper-cutting. I found out that paper-cutting dates back to the Han Dynasty and was used to celebrate weddings or harvests. I also became more patient — when I make a mistake now, I don’t give up easily. Next semester, I want to teach my roommate how to cut paper flowers, so more people can love this traditional craft.

This year is the Year of the Snake. You might think snakes are scary. But in Chinese history, snakes are a symbol of high position, being born again and a close link between people and gods.
In the Erlitou Culture (18th-16th centuries BC), people found snake pictures on nice old things. At the Erlitou place in Henan, there’s a great find: a long, snake-like thing made of over 2,000 turquoise (绿松石) pieces. Experts think it could be a dragon or a snake. The snake is often seen as the idea for dragon images.
Snakes can shed skin, so they are related to being born again. “In old times, snakes seemed to die, but then they shed their skin and came back to life. This showed the idea of coming back to life after death,” said Han Ding, a teacher at Henan University.
Long ago, people believed the universe had three parts. There were gods in heaven, humans on Earth, and the underworld was where the dead were. When people saw snakes digging underground, they thought these animals could connect the dead and gods. Then, images of humans with snake bodies were made, showing the ability to cross between life and death.
Snakes have lived on Earth for more than 100 million years. They are always in Chinese people’s culture and life. They were a link between people and gods, and finally became a zodiac symbol (生肖) for common people.
