Many people are surprised to learn that Antarctica (南极洲) is nearly twice the size of the United States. The name Antarctica was named to mean “opposite (反义词) to the Arctic (北极)”. Antarctica is a high, ice-covered land. In the Arctic, the land is grouped around the ice-covered Arctic Ocean.
Largely because of this difference, the weather of the two areas is very different. Antarctica is the coldest area in the world. It is about 30℃ colder than the Arctic. At the American South Pole Station, winter temperatures sometimes fall below -73℃. There isn’t much rain, but there is a lot of snow and wind. The lowest temperature was around -89℃!
Partly because of this difference, the land animals and plants of the two areas are very different. In the Arctic, there are many plants. In Antarctica, very few plants grow in some of the ice-free areas. Antarctica is home to the penguins while they do not live in the Arctic. The land animals of the Arctic are foxes, bears and reindeer (驯鹿). But you can’t find these animals in Antarctica.
Ice is the great feature of Antarctica. More than 12 million square kilometers of ice covers the area. About 85 percent of the ice in the world is in Antarctica. The icecap is very thick, nearly 2,400 meters. If this large amount of ice melts because of warmer weather, the world oceans will become larger. Natural disasters would have to take place for this.
1. According to the passage, we know Antarctica is ____ .
A. the coldest area in the world B. a place without any sign of life
C. windy and rainy most of the time D. with the lowest temperature at -73℃
2. One type of animal found in Antarctica is the ____ .
A. fox B. penguin C. bear D. reindeer
3. We can infer from the passage that ____ .
A. scientists show little interest in Antarctica B. there are many people living in Antarctica
C. the study in Arctic helps more plants grow D. weather change will cause natural disasters

She was awakened by a shock, so sudden and strong that if Dorothy had not been lying on the soft bed she might have been hurt. As it was, the shake made her catch her breath and wonder what had happened; and Toto put his cold little nose into her face and whined sadly. Dorothy sat up and noticed that the house was not moving; nor was it dark, for the bright sunshine came in at the window, filling the little room. Then she jumped from her bed and opened the door with Toto following her.
The little girl gave a cry of amazement and looked about her, her eyes growing bigger and bigger at the wonderful sights she saw.
The cyclone (龙卷风) had set the house down, very gently — for a cyclone — in the middle of a country of great beauty. There were lovely patches of green grass all about, with tall trees bearing rich and delicious fruits. Groups of beautiful flowers were on every hand, and birds with rare and bright feathers sang and fluttered in the trees and bushes. A little way off was a small brook (小溪). It rushed and shone along the green banks, murmuring in a voice that made the little girl very grateful — she had lived so long on the dry, gray prairies (草原) and was so lucky to see such beauty now.
While she stood looking eagerly at the strange and beautiful sights, she noticed coming toward her a group of the strangest people she had ever seen. They were not as big as the grown-ups she had always been used to, but neither were they very small. In fact, they seemed about as tall as Dorothy, who was a well-grown child for her age, although they were, so far as looks go, many years older.
“I am the Witch of the North.”

The largest ocean— the Pacific Ocean
Where: It stretches from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south, and between Asia and Australia in the west, and the Americas in the east.
How large: It covers more than 165 million square kilometers, which is larger than the total land area of the whole world.
What it is like: It has the deepest trench (海沟) on Earth — the Mariana Trench, which is about 11,000 meters deep. It is also home to thousands of kinds of sea animals and plants, many of which cannot be found in other oceans.
The highest waterfall — the Angel Falls
Where: It is in the rainforest of Venezuela, South America.
How high: It drops 979 meters from the top to the bottom, with a single drop of 807 meters. It is about 19 times as high as the Niagara Falls.
