On January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1.
This smart program can solve math problems, write code (代码), and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $ 5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips (计算机芯片) for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice math. Other AIs need many prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $ 10 instead of $ 300 with other AIs. Even Meta ( a famous U.S. tech company ) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $ 65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, showing that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
36. How much did it cost to build DeepSeek-R1?
A. $ 5.58 million. B. $ 65 billion. C. $ 10. D. $ 300.
37. What does “improves by itself” mean in the article?
A. It needs programmers to fix mistakes. B. It expresses answers from other AIs.
C. It becomes better through practice. D. It only works with expensive tools.
38. Why did Meta plan to spend more money on AI research?
A. To help Chinese companies. B. To compete with DeepSeek-R1.
C. To build more computer chips. D. To hire German scientists.
39. U.S. tech companies are worried because DeepSeek-R1 is ________ from this passage.
A. smart and expensive B. cheap and friendly C. smart and cheap D. friendly and expensive
40. What is the main purpose of the article?
A. To compare Chinese and American AI technologies. B. To encourage students to become programmers.
C. To explain how computer chips work. D. To introduce a low-cost AI model from China.
D
Photosynthesis (光合作用) is the process by which plants make their own food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide (CO₂). It is an important process that supports life on the Earth.
Photosynthesis mainly happens in the leaves of plants. Leaves contain tiny structures called chloroplasts, which have a green pigment (色素) called chlorophyll (叶绿素). Chlorophyll absorbs (吸收) sunlight and uses its energy to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose (葡萄糖) and oxygen. The glucose provides energy for the plant, while the oxygen is released into the air.
Photosynthesis is necessary for all living beings. It produces oxygen, which animals and humans need to breathe. Additionally, plants are the primary producers in the food chain. They provide food for animals, which in turn support other living beings. Without photosynthesis, life on the Earth would not be possible.
However, several factors can affect the rate of photosynthesis.
Sunlight: More sunlight usually means more energy for photosynthesis, but too much can damage the plant.
Water: Plants need water to carry out photosynthesis. Drought conditions can slow down the process.
Carbon Dioxide: Higher levels of CO₂ can increase the rate of photosynthesis, but very low levels can limit it.
Temperature: Photosynthesis works best within an ideal temperature range. Too high or too low temperatures can slow down or stop the process.
Photosynthesis is a really amazing process that allows plants to turn sunlight into energy and produce oxygen. Understanding this process helps us appreciate the importance of plants and the environment.
41. Where does photosynthesis mainly take place in plants?
A. In the roots. B. In the leaves. C. In the fruits. D. In the flowers.
42. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Photosynthesis usually happens at night.
B. Photosynthesis is not important for animals and humans.
C. High levels of CO₂ always damage the process of photosynthesis.
D. Chlorophyll catches sunlight and turns water and CO₂ into glucose and oxygen.
43. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. The importance of photosynthesis.
B. How photosynthesis produces oxygen.
C. How sunlight is used to make food.
D. The importance of water and CO₂ for plants.
44. Which of the following can slow down photosynthesis?
A. Ideal temperatures. B. Too much sunlight.
C. Drought conditions. D. High levels of carbon dioxide.
45. What will happen to a plant if it is in an environment with high temperatures and low levels of CO₂?
A. The plant will produce more glucose and oxygen.
B. The plant will have trouble with photosynthesis.
C. The plant will grow faster because of the high temperatures.
D. The plant will not be influenced because sunlight is still available.

Puberty (青春期) is the process of life when young people leave childhood and move into adulthood. It is difficult for teenagers because puberty influences them on their minds and bodies.
Some young people may begin puberty at 8, while others may not start until 14 or 15. Usually, teenage girls start puberty two years before teenage boys do. For boys and girls, it is usually complete by the age of 18.
During those years, the body develops in many ways. Feelings can also change quickly.
Teenage boys during puberty often begin to take unnecessary risks. Their attention is on having fun and being accepted. They like trying some challenging outdoor activities like skateboarding and rock climbing so they need to think deeply before they act and make good decisions for themselves.
A girl’s personality often doesn’t develop in the same way as a boy’s. Teenage girls sometimes don’t believe in themselves. They aren’t sure about their own feelings. However, they are usually afraid to tell their parents or teachers about their problems. For this reason, teenage girls should be encouraged to discuss things with trusted adults.
Parents, schools and communities can do a lot to care for and help young people. It is everyone’s responsibility to help young people grow into healthy adults.
Understanding Puberty in Teenagers
