My 18-year-old son, Barton and his classmates had arranged a trip to Killington, Vt. for a weekend of skiing. He had asked for my permission. I nodded at that time without thinking the weather.
I’ve never imagined I’d be a helicopter parent. I thought kids were strong, until I had my own children and discovered how fragile (脆弱的) they could be. We had many emergency room visits before Barton was 6. My concern increased gradually and some days I’d forbid my children to leave the house if I thought it was too windy.
But since this trip was quite important to Barton, I tried to reduce my concern. “The news is just from one little AccuWeather forecast station,” I comforted myself two days before his weekend. From there I became very dysphoric. That afternoon, I called the activity leader, “They’re saying the storm and snow will be over 24 inches.”
“Mom, do you know that skiing need snow?”
“I really don’t think you should go,” I told my son.
“But everyone’s going,” he said.
I called some moms whose children had great influence in class. If those kids were not permitted to go, the rest would fall like a row of dominoes (多米诺骨牌).
“They’re all going to die,” I said, puzzled that I seemed to be the only mother who understood the potential danger. But nobody agreed with me and finally I thought I could relax.
But teenagers don’t always do what they’re told. As leaving time neared, text messages informed my son that all the children were going on the trip.
Barton picked up his snowboard and headed for the front door. At that moment, I climbed down the bottom rung (梯子的横档) of the parenting ladder.
4. Which of the following can best describe the author according to Paragraph 2?

5. What does the underlined word “dysphoric” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Relaxed. B. Anxious. C. Happy. D. Embarrassed.
6. Why did the author call some moms?
A. To persuade them to cancel the trip. B. To tell them about the change of time.
C. To ask them for advice. D. To remind them to watch over their children.
7. How did the author feel after Barton went on the trip?
A. She suddenly felt relieved. B. She was disappointed at Barton’s choice.
C. She learned more about being parents. D. She felt like a failure.

Two of the hardest things to achieve in this world are to gain wealth by honest effort, and how to use wealth properly. Recently I walked into a well-known golf club after finishing a walk. It was in the late afternoon and most of the members had left for their homes. But a half-dozen or so men past middle age were still seated at tables talking aimlessly and drinking more. These same men can be found there day after day, and strangely enough, each one of these men had been a man of wealth, successful in business and respected in the community. If material success was the main necessity for happiness, then each one should have been happy. However, it seemed to me, something very important was losing. Otherwise, people wouldn’t keep trying to escape real life by drinking Scotch and soda. They knew their creativity had ceased (停止). When a fruit tree ceases to grow its fruit, it is dying. And it is the same with man.
What is the answer to a long and happy life in this world of ours? I think I found it long ago in a passage from The Book of Genesis. The words were few, but they became memorably impressed on my mind, “In the sweat of the face shall you eat the bread. Only hard work keeps you alive.”
To me, the battle of life is a challenge to everyone. At the end of the road I want to be able to feel that I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, and I have kept the faith.
12. The author develops the first paragraph by ________.
A. discussing an experiment B. analyzing a cause C. using an example D. describing a process
13. Which of the following best describes those middle-aged men in the first paragraph?
A. Aimless and less creative B. Generous and respectable
C. Famous and creative D. Successful and ambitious
14. According to the passage, the author ________.
A. admired the men drinking and talking all day in a golf club
B. had a lot of wealth, but didn’t know how to use it properly
C. held a positive attitude to an active life
D. found no way to escape the realities of life other than a Scotch and soda
15. What’s the answer to a long and happy life in the world?
A. Seeing is believing. B. Well begun is half done.
C. Failure is the mother of success. D. No pains, no gains.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a hot summer. There was no school to go to, and it cost too much to hire a person to take care of us when my parents worked. We didn’t live near grandparents. There were no cousins next door, no aunts or uncles in the neighborhood to go to. So it was just the two of us. “You hear that?” my brother asked me. “What?” I said. “The ice-cream truck.” I listened. And there it was. That tinny little sound twinkling somewhere nearby. When you hear an ice-cream truck on your street, it means that someone has thought of you. It means that someone thinks you deserve something good in the world, and you don’t have to imagine that for yourself all by yourself.
That day, the ice-cream truck came to our street. I put the chain down of the door and opened it. I took my brother and we ran outside to the curb. The sound of the ice-cream truck was so loud, so close. The cheerful melody drifted in the warm air, making every kid on the street excited. More and more kids began to gather around the truck. One by one, they bought their favorite ice cream. Laughter and chatter filled the street as they happily licked their cold treats. My brother and I stood to the side, watching longingly. Our eyes were fixed on the colorful ice creams, and we swallowed quietly. After the last child got his ice cream, my brother suddenly sobbed (抽泣) beside me. “I want a bite too,” he said. But we didn’t step forward — my pocket was completely empty.
Suddenly, the ice-cream truck stopped for us.

【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. D

【答案】Dear Tom,
I’m more than glad to help you prepare for the Chinese story-telling competition.
Could you please tell me when and where you are available for our tutoring sessions? To help you perform better, I have two suggestions. First, you’d better choose a story with simple language and a clear moral. Second, practice reading aloud to get familiar with the rhythm and emotions of the story.
Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】 Suddenly, the ice-cream truck stopped for us. We were frantic in our joy, screaming out what we wanted to eat, and for some reason the man in the truck made it for us. We got what we asked for and ate quickly, trying not to let the summer heat take it away from us. We licked our fingers, hands, wrists. And we laughed for no reason other than that we could. We hadn’t noticed the ice-cream truck leaving, and its loud music pulling away, growing distant.
Until the last bit of sweetness melted in our mouths, we slowly went home. The sun still blazed overhead, but our hearts were filled with cool joy. That kind stranger needed no thanks, no reward. To this day, every time I hear the faint jingle of an ice-cream truck, I think of that hot summer day. A simple treat became the warmest memory, reminding me that kindness always finds its way to those who need it most.
