Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the nine o’clock Mystery Hour. Today we’ll show you two British stories. We hope you’ll enjoy them.
About 900 years ago two green children arrived in a small village in south England. Their eyes and skin were green and they spoke a strange language. They were very tired and weak, so the people of the village looked after them. The boy died a year later, but the girl grew strong and lived the rest of her life there. And her skin color turned back to normal day by day. Scientists say that sometimes of people don’t have enough food to eat for a long time, their skin goes very pale and can turn green.
Loch Ness is the largest lake in Scotland. It’s a very deep and cold lake. For hundreds of years, people have talked about a monster(怪物) called Nessie which lives in the lake. About seventy years ago, two people saw something moving in the lake. They said that the animal was playing and rolling around in the water. Since then many people say they have seen the monster. Their descriptions are always the same. It looks like a dinosaur, with a very long neck and a small head. It has a big bump(肿块)on its back. People have tried to photograph the animal, but the pictures have not been very clear. Scientists don’t know whether there is a monster or not. Some say it may be a whale or a very large fish. Some think it’s a snake. Others say there’s nothing at all— nothing but people’s imagination. Maybe we’ll never know what’s in Loch Ness.

Night after night, she came to make me comfortable in bed, even long after my childhood years. Following her daily habit, she'd bend down and push my long hair out of the way, then kiss my forehead(额头).
I don't remember when it first started annoying(使人恼怒的) me— her hands pushing my hair that way. But it did annoy me, for they felt rough(粗糙的) against my young skin. Finally, one night, I shouted out at her, "Don't do that anymore —your hands are too rough!" She didn't say anything in reply. But never again did my mother close out my day with that expression of her love.
Time after time, with the passing years, my thoughts returned to that night. By then I missed my mother's hands, missed her goodnight kiss on my forehead. Sometimes it seemed very close, sometimes far away. But always it existed, in the back of my mind.
Well, the years have passed, and I'm not a little girl anymore. Mom is in her mid-seventies, and those hands I once thought to be so rough are still doing things for me and my family. She's been our doctor, reaching for the medicine to calm a young girl's stomach or help with the boy's injured knee. She cooks the best fried chicken in the world... washes blue jeans more carefully than I can...
Now, my own children are grown and gone. Mom no longer has Dad, and on special days, I spend the night with her. So it was late on Thanksgiving Eve, as I slept in the bedroom of my youth, a hand run across my face to brush the hair from my forehead. Then a kiss, ever so gently, touched my brow.
In my memory, for the thousandth time, I remembered the night my young voice complained, "Don't do that anymore — your hands are too rough!" Catching Mom's hand in hand, I cried out how sorry I was for that night. I thought she'd remember, as I did. But Mom didn't know what I was talking about. She had forgotten — and forgiven (原谅)— long ago.
That night, I fell asleep with a new understanding for my gentle mother and her caring hands. And the guilt that I had carried around for so long was nowhere to be found.
36.What annoyed me that night?
A.My mother’s rough hands B.My mother’s reply
C.My mother’s kiss D.My mother’s expression of love
37.From the passage, we can learn that .
A.I never missed my mother’s goodnight kiss.
B.I had carried the guilt for many years until my mother kissed me again.

D.My father is still alive and lives with my mom..
38.My mother does these things for me and my family except _.
A.Cooking meals B.Washing clothes
C.Taking care of the children D.Closing out the day by kissing
39.What is my mom like?

Learning a new language is a complex (复杂的) task, but there are lots of benefits of language learning. Research shows that it is never too early or too late to start learning a new language—our brains are built for language learning!
Language is about communication and connection, and studying a new language brings people and cultures closer to us. At the beginning, learning a language might feel like all vocabulary and grammar, but it doesn’t take long to build up the skills to make meaningful connections in the new language.
Knowing another language can develop our understanding of languages in general. Studying a second language helps improve students’ performance in other subjects. It involves learning different kinds of skills, like creativity, higher order of thinking, problem solving and reasoning.
If a man can use two languages, he is bilingual. Being bilingual trains our brains to perform a complex task: turning one language “down” while turning the other “up”, in every interaction, for every word! Bilinguals’ brains treat languages like a seesaw (跷跷板), lifting one up higher when it is needed, and pushing lower the one not being used. This push-and-pull in bilinguals’ brains gets them practicing a specific (特定的) kind of attention and control.
Languages provide new ways of interacting with people in our communities and around the world. While students may learn a new language in school, technology makes it easier than ever before for older adults to learn, too. Online chatting tools give adults ways to communicate directly with their language practice partners and native speakers. Exploring new cultures, travel, and making new social connections with people around the world can also have a good influence on older adults.
People of any age can learn new languages, but it is usually harder for adults to have the time and energy to learn them. For both kids and adults, language learning takes time and patience, and it should also be enjoyable.
40.Why is learning another language helpful for students’ other subjects?
A.Because it makes learning vocabulary and grammar easy.
B.Because it gets students interested in many subjects.
C.Because it shows the performance of students.
D.Because it develops students’ several skills.
41.Paragraph 4 mainly talks about ________.
A.how bilinguals learn languages
B.why being bilingual can benefit us
C.how we can be bilingual through practice
D.why bilinguals need some complex tasks
42.We can learn from the passage that ________.
A.learning a language is like playing on a seesaw
B.kids have more difficulties finding time to learn languages than adults
C.technology provides adults with ways to talk with native speakers
D.it is impossible to make meaningful connections in a new language

When I first arrived in China, some of the first Chinese vocabulary I learned had to do with food. 43 , but still didn’t understand most of the things which I saw on Chinese restaurant menus. Fortunately, there were pictures to help me recognize them.
44 . But a lot of restaurants I’ve been to in the US don’t. What is the reason for the difference?
One thing I’ve noticed about China is that food is a bigger part of their culture than it is in the US. 45 . My Chinese friends post pictures of their meals online more often than my US friends.
Food is just a bigger deal here—and having pictures of food in menus is part of that. 46 , with vivid (生动的) and well-framed (构图精美) photos.
Another factor is the names of the dishes. Chinese dishes sometimes have fanciful (想象的) names like “palace guard chicken” or “three fresh things from the soil”. These are interesting names, but they don’t really tell you what the dishes are like. 47 .
There’s probably even more to it than that. All I know is that I was very grateful to have those picture menus when I first came here all those years ago.
A.I learned the names of a few dishes
B.Some menus are almost like works of art
C.Therefore, it’s helpful to have pictures so you can actually see what you’re going to eat
D.Nearly every restaurant menu in China has pictures of food in it

Water is important to everybody. As a teenager, you should drink 1.4 to 1.9 liters (升) of water every day. Most of us get cheap water from the taps. But some people prefer bottled water, though it costs more.
Bottled water first appeared in the United States in the 1760s. A company called Jackson’s Spa began to sell bottled water. It said that the water could “produce good influence on people’s bodies.” Since then, bottled water has become more and more popular worldwide. People drink about 10 percent more bottled water every year. In 2019, Americans drank more bottled water than soda for the first time.
Why has bottled water become so popular? Well, this may be because people worry about the purity of tap water. According to one survey, 63 percent of Americans worried a lot about the safety of their drinking water.
However, research shows that such worries are unnecessary. For most families, bottled water is not better than tap water. In fact, almost half of all bottled water comes from the tap. And when it comes to taste, most of us cannot tell the difference. Students at Boston University once had a blind taste test. Only a third of the people were able to correctly pick out the tap water from the samples (样品).
However, making bottled water wastes a lot of resources. Plastic bottles are usually used only once. Besides, more water is needed to make a bottle of water than just its contents (容量).
Do you prefer bottled water or tap water? It’s time to change your mind! Bottled water is more expensive. However, it isn’t much better than the water you get from the kitchen tap.
59.How much water should a teenager drink every day?
60.When did bottled water first appear in the USA?
61.In 2019, which did people in America drink more, bottled water or soda?
62.Where does nearly half of all bottled water come from?
63.What’s the purpose of this passage?

【答案】A

2.Your order ________ if you fail to pay for it in 15 minutes on Meituan.
A.cancels B.is cancelled C.will cancel D.will be cancelled
3.—If you ________ another chance next time, can you do it better, Jack?
—That’s for sure. Trust me!
A.give B.will give C.are given D.will be given
【答案】C
【知识点】一般现在时的被动语态、give(gave given)
4.—How long ________ you ________ this new model plane?

buy买;have拥有。how long提问一段时间,需和持续性动词连用,buy是终止性动词,可排除AD两项;结合回答“For one week”和句子结构,可知用现在完成时have done结构,故选C。
5.— Shall we go to Nanjing Green Expo Park to enjoy the beautiful flowers this afternoon?
— ________. Let’s go there by bike.

I think so我也这么想;That’s all right没关系;My pleasure这是我的荣幸;Sounds great听起来不错。根据“Let’s go there by bike.”
6.There are some idioms and phrases about pigs in our languages, ________ “Boiling a dead pig” (死猪不怕开水烫), and “ A pig looking in the mirror is still a pig” (猪八戒照镜子).

【知识点】for example、such as、介词短语

7.When waste from daily life ________, people won’t mix some resources with wet waste.
A.separated B.is separated C.separates D.will be separated
8.Don’t miss the chance when you can catch it, or you will ________ it someday.
A.decide B.agree C.regret D.repeat

根据“Mary’s going to be an elder sister.”可知,这个家庭已经有了一个孩子,所以下文“Her parents are planning to have…child.”
10.—What does your father do?
—He’s a(n) ________. He works in a hospital.
A.actor B.player C.teacher D.dentist

31.What kind of story is talked about in this program?
A.Romantic stories. B.Mysteries.
C.Horror stories. D.Comedies.
32.Where did the stories happen?
A. B. C. D.
33.Which sentence is TRUE about the two green children?
A.They both enjoyed a long and happy life.
B.The girl’s eyes and skin were green all her life.
C.At first they spoke the same language as people in the small village did.
D.Maybe they hadn’t eaten enough for long before they reached the village.
34.What does Nessie look like according to some witnesses?
A. B. C. D.
35.What can we learn from the second story?
A.Scientists are still not sure whether there is a monster or not in Loch Ness.
B.Loch Ness is very deep and warm lake in Scotland.
C.People have taken very clear pictures of Nessie.
D.In fact Nessie is a whale or a snake.

The boy died a year later, but the girl grew strong and lived the rest of her life there"得知男孩一年后就死了,女孩长大并强壮,在那度过了剩余的一生。 And her skin color turned back to normal day by day"可得知,女孩的皮肤颜色一天天转为正常。 Scientists say that sometimes of people don’t have enough food to eat for a long time, their skin goes very pale and can turn green",该句的意思是“科学家说有时候人长期不能吃到足够的食物,他们的皮肤会变苍白也可能变为绿色。”
It looks like a dinosaur, with a very long neck and a small head. It has a big bump(肿块)on its back. "可得知“它看起来像一只恐龙,有着长长的鼻子和小小的头。它的背上还有一个大肿块。”再根据图片,故答案为C。
35.细节理解题。根据文章第十六行" Scientists don’t know whether there is a monster or not." It’s a very deep and cold lake." People have tried to photograph the animal, but the pictures have not been very clear." Some say it may be a whale or a very large fish. Some think it’s a snake. Others say there’s nothing at all— nothing but people’s imagination. Maybe we’ll never know what’s in Loch Ness."
C
C.My mother always remembers what I said that night.
D.My father is still alive and lives with my mom..
38.My mother does these things for me and my family except _.
A.Cooking meals B.Washing clothes
C.Taking care of the children D.Closing out the day by kissing

59.1.4 to 1.9 liters.
60.In the 1760s.
61.Bottled water.

A.guilty B.gentle C.careless D.silent

D.Nearly every restaurant menu in China has pictures of food in it
E.A common way to greet someone in China is to ask them if they’ve eaten yet
F.They are in danger

When you see a photo of a beach covered in dreamy pink sand on social media, you might wish to visit the place in person. But when you get there, you find nothing but a lakeshore with broken red bricks.

People don’t have the same opinions about the issue. Many agree that the beautiful but not real photos are “fraudulent (欺骗性的)” or misleading. Some, h 70 , argue that it is not wrong for people to post fascinating photos, and viewers should learn to recognize what is t 71 and what is false.

“Instead of over-retouched pictures, the platforms can show content digging into the c 72 of a tourist site,” Gu said. “The viewers, on the other hand, should understand that real traveling is far more than s 73 ‘checking in’ at an Internet-famous site.”
