Set sail: scenic boat rides around the world for you
Whether you’re looking to appreciate nature, explore centuries of history or step into a storybook, these scenic boat rides promise unforgettable travel experiences.
Takachiho Gorge (Japan)
Take a boat out to Miyazaki Prefecture’s Takachiho Gorge, where vivid green waters, surrounded by towering cliffs (悬崖) and rock formations that look like dragon scales (鳞片), create a landscape that wouldn’t feel out of place in The Lord of the Rings or Jurassic Park. Don’t forget to guide your boat under the breathtaking Manai Waterfall to fully enjoy its natural beauty.
Giethoorn (Netherlands)
Often called the “Venice of the North” and described as a picturesque village, Giethoorn has no roads — only a system of canals (运河) that residents and visitors travel through by electric “whisper boats” and traditional wooden boats. But that’s only half of Giethoorn’s charm. The other half lies in its storybook cottages, gardens with rich flowers and old-style arched wooden bridges.
Wuzhen (China)
Wuzhen is one of China’s most finely preserved and lovingly restored water towns. Characterised by cobblestone streets, arched stone bridges and Ming- and Qing-era architecture, it offers visitors an insight into the past. It’s recommended to go on a boat ride in the evening, when the wooden houses and still canals glow (熠熠生辉) under the warm light of lanterns, transforming this picturesque town into a dreamy, mirror-like waterscape.
Venice Canal Historic District (USA)
Inspired by Venice, Italy, Los Angeles’s Venice Canal Historic District was designed by developer Abbot Kinney in 1905. Today, after restoration efforts in the 1990s, only six of the original canals remain. Go boating past lovely homes, arched walking bridges and green gardens, and you’ll discover a surprisingly peaceful and beautiful part of Los Angeles.
21. What do we know about Takachiho Gorge?
A. It is popular for rock climbing.
B. It features storybook houses and canals.
C. It is known as the Jurassic Park filming site.
D. It presents a magical water and stone landscape.

Panic washes over my entire body as I hunch (俯身) over my papers on the bedroom floor. I desperately work through the same numbers over and over, hating the results that contradict my goals. My mind races with fears about failing exams and projects. My goal was clear: I have to be the BEST. Drops of sweat form on my back, and my face turns bright red. A wave of self-critical thoughts clouds my judgment, and I don’t feel like I am good enough.
In college, this was an almost daily process. As someone who just naturally likes to achieve goals, I thought this was normal. However, as years went by, it became a recipe for disaster when it came to my mental health.
Now, I realize that I have an achievement addiction. Though I’ve reduced many negative thoughts, they still arise at unwelcome moments, trying to pull me back into the damaging achievement cycle.
I was once someone who used awards and titles to prove her worth. When I didn’t win an award, my immediate reaction was, “They don’t know what they’re talking about!” followed by “I’m just not good enough to get that award or anything else.” Neither is true, but the protector voice inside of me wants to defend my pride by announcing that other people are the ones at fault. Then, my inner child tells me that I’m not worth it anyway. Both are wounded parts of my conscious (意识的) and subconscious (潜意识的) mind, and having that knowledge gives me the understanding I always lacked.
These days, I am still hyper-focused (高度专注的) on what I want to achieve. I couldn’t just quit it all at once. But I’m learning to manage my ambition without letting it control me. I’m making a conscious effort to accept myself, not just to push for perfection.
24. What was the author’s main struggle at college?
A. Balancing study and social life.
B. Maintaining healthy eating habits.
C. Dealing with pressure to earn perfect scores.
D. Managing anxiety over future career decisions.
25. What impact did the author’s achievement addiction have on her?
A. It damaged her mental well-being.
B. It resulted in her physical burnout.
C. It caused her to ignore social connections.
D. It led her to be unfriendly toward other students.
26. What was the author’s first response to not winning an award?
A. Falling into self-doubt.
B. Analyzing the outcome.
C. Questioning the judges.
D. Seeking self-improvement tips.
27. What is the author currently doing about her ambition?
A. Reflecting on its origins.
B. Putting it aside and relaxing.
C. Facing it and pressing ahead.
D. Balancing it with self-acceptance.

A short WhatsApp message was what started a long and unexpected friendship between Lam Li Min, a 52-year-old former accountant-turned-full-time mum and a middle-aged low-income single mother struggling with financial, physical and mental health problems. These two women might not have crossed paths had they not been paired up through a Daughters Of Tomorrow (DOT) Befriender programme.
Lam volunteers with DOT, a Singapore charity that helps women from low-income families. DOT’s main work is to help disadvantaged women break the cycle of poverty by securing gainful employment through job readiness, upskilling and job-bridging programmes, as well as by providing them with support.
One of its programmes is an eight-week workshop to build women’s confidence. Befrienders like Lam are usually roped in during this course to support beneficiaries (受益人) through their journey. Many befrienders remain in contact with their beneficiaries after they have completed the course or even if they drop out of it. Beneficiaries share with Lam their day-to-day struggles, financial difficulties, relationship problems and feelings of hopelessness.
Though the befrienders are not counsellors (辅导员), they undergo a screening process and participate in two days of training focused on empathy (同理心) and befriending skills. Two other key requirements: Volunteers must be women and aged above 30, so that they can better relate to the beneficiaries they are journeying with.
Though Lam typically checks in with her beneficiaries monthly on WhatsApp, offering comfort and guidance, they often reach out to her when they need help, with some conversations lasting for hours.
Lam’s commitment goes beyond volunteering. Last year, she joined a graduate programme in clinical and counselling psychology at Arium School of Arts and Sciences, to learn how to better communicate with women in need and support them. She recently completed the course.
Lam finds empowerment in knowing her emotional support helps these women overcome their struggles. Her journey is a reminder of the significant impact one individual can have on the community.
28. What might the WhatsApp message mentioned in paragraph 1 be about?
A. Lam checking on the single mother’s well-being.
B. Lam inviting the single mother to volunteer.
C. Lam asking for advice on mental health.
D. Lam seeking financial counselling.
29. What is the primary goal of the eight-week workshop?
A. To boost women’s self-belief.
B. To improve women’s creativity.
C. To enhance women’s adaptability.
D. To develop women’s perseverance.
30. Why must befrienders be over 30?
A. To offer in-time guidance.
B. To teach practical life skills.
C. To model patience and courage.
D. To better understand the beneficiaries.
31. How did Lam improve her support for women in need?
A. By reaching out more often on WhatsApp.
B. By pursuing a psychology graduate course.
C. By supporting long engaging group chats.
D. By volunteering more hours at the organisation.

Ruth Shaw’s memoir (自传), The Bookseller at the End of the World, begins with an introduction to the Two Wee Bookshops she runs in a tiny town on the southwest coast of New Zealand, sharing a few stories of customers who find their way to the remote village and her shops. For the next 50 or so pages, the story continues in a similar, almost picturesque, manner — happy childhood, hardworking and adventurous parents who passed on to Shaw the same spirit of boldness and determination, and a love of books. Beautifully produced, the book might lead readers to think it’s just a lighthearted reflection on the ups and downs of bookselling and the people you meet.
These stories are woven (交织) throughout the book, but it is much richer than slice-of-life remembrances. Early on, she explains a difficult time in her youth that led to deep personal challenges and a painful separation from someone she loved. The support and love of her parents enabled her to regain a sense of direction and the courage to face new experiences.
She writes of the desire “to run,” always looking ahead, and when things got tough, she would push forward. Despite it all, she demonstrates a truly unbreakable spirit, so her life has been an adventurous one, full of travel and exploration — sailing extensively through the Pacific, working in Papua New Guinea and outback Australia, counselling in Sydney’s Kings Cross, campaigning for environmental causes and establishing a successful eco-tourism business before opening her bookshops.
Nevertheless, there are deep losses that will leave readers wondering how much more one person must deal with in a life. It means by the time Shaw opens her Two Wee Bookshops, she is perfectly placed to provide a deep understanding to customers who need to share their own stories.
Shaw tells her own story without self-pity; she’s straightforward, frequently humorous, but sometimes reserved. Her strength, optimism and willingness to help others is to be admired, and her remarkable story should be read and reflected upon.
32. What first impression does Ruth Shaw’s memoir give?
A. A sad story about her losses.
B. A cheerful look at bookselling.
C. A detailed account of her travels.
D. A complex story about environmentalism.
33. How did Shaw’s parents influence her?
A. They taught her to be self-reliant.
B. They encouraged her to live a stable life.
C. They shaped her adventurous outlook with love.
D. They motivated her to focus on academic success.
34. What do the underlined words “to run” in paragraph 3 refer to in Shaw’s life?
A. To escape unsolvable problems.
B. To participate in extensive races.
C. To constantly seek new experiences.
D. To manage her bookshops efficiently.
35. Which best describes Shaw’s tone when telling her story?
A. Humorous but self-pitying.
B. Reflective but critical.
C. Reserved and regretful.
D. Honest and optimistic.
Struggling to set boundaries that stick? Do you feel like you’re giving it your all, yet people still don’t respect your boundaries? 36 Here I’ll highlight some common boundary-setting mistakes and offer strategies for making them more effective.
You’re focused on changing others instead of yourself.
37 It’s often more effective to focus on what you can change rather than expecting others to adjust. For example, instead of repeatedly asking your mother to stop texting you at night, simply let her know you’ll turn your phone off and respond when you’re available.
38
Boundaries set in anger often come across as demands or punishments rather than thoughtful limits. Unless you’re in immediate danger, take time to calm down before setting a boundary. Reflect on what you need and how best to communicate it. Thoughtful, clear boundaries are more likely to be respected and effective.
You give in when others resist.
Not everyone will be happy with your boundaries, and some people may push back. 39 Most people will adjust over time if you remain consistent. Stand firm — your needs matter just as much as anyone else’s.
You’re overexplaining your boundaries.
When setting boundaries, less is often more, especially with people who tend to push back. Some will argue against your boundaries to pressure you into changing them. Instead of explaining, keep it simple. 40
Setting boundaries isn’t always easy. But small adjustments can create clearer, healthier boundaries that are more likely to be respected and help you meet your needs.
A. Your boundaries are too flexible.
B. But at other times, actions are more effective.
C. You’re setting boundaries in the heat of the moment.
D. A direct “That doesn’t work for me” is often enough.
E. Boundaries help you meet your needs, not control or change other people.
F. However, someone’s dislike doesn’t mean your boundaries are wrong or should be changed.
G. Boundaries are essential for healthy relationships, but many people find them hard to maintain.

Liam never appreciated the presents from his grandmother, Agnes. In fact, after several disappointments of receiving science fiction (科幻) books instead of comic books in her packages, he never bothered to open the other gifts and simply set them aside in his room.
Agnes, amused by his reluctance (不情愿), often teased him. “Liam, you should never judge a book by its cover.” She would sigh (叹气) dramatically when Liam admitted he hadn’t read any of the books she had bought.
One day when Agnes was visiting Liam, she got caught in the rain, and the toolbox she’d bought got dirty. She had left it on the doorstep while wiping her glasses, and by the time it arrived in Liam’s hands, the wet gift wrap was torn, and the dust was more visible than the box itself.
Liam was displeased with the look of the toolbox, but even more so with the thought that Agnes might have bought him more of those uninteresting books. The kid simply told her he’d open it later, trying not to hurt her feelings.
After Agnes left their home that day, Liam threw the box on the highest shelf, thinking it was another one of her boring presents he hated, and forgot about it. The next day, when his grandmother called him to check if he’d opened her gift, he made an excuse. The next day, Agnes called again, and things went on like this for a week. Liam would always find an excuse to avoid talking about the box and change the subject to something else.
One morning, he sat by the phone, preparing to make an excuse to avoid Agnes’ question. But when the boy answered the call, he ran to his mother. “Mom!” Liam cried. “Grandma is in the hospital!”
Liam and his mother rushed to the hospital and got the shock of their lives when they saw Agnes unconscious. Liam’s mother stayed with her in the hospital that night, waiting for her to wake up, but Agnes never opened her eyes again. When Liam received the heartbreaking news, he couldn’t stop crying.

W: Lucas, I’m working on my CV right now, but I’m stuck on the summary part. Do you have any advice?

W: Look at these robots. Pretty amazing, right?

W: Absolutely. I had no idea there are so many different career paths we can explore.
(Text 6)
W: James, how did you end up becoming a firefighter?
M: When I was a child, I watched a TV show about a firefighter. He was battling a fire for a week. He saved many people. He was so committed and I thought I wanted to do the same thing.

M: Well, he was all set to apply to a film school after graduation, but then something interesting came up. His father saw an ad for a job at Lego, and since Jack was already a Lego fan, he decided to apply. He even added a video of himself making Lego models in his application.
W: That’s so cool! Did he get the job?
M: He sure did. But it wasn’t straightforward. He had to go through an unusual interview where he competed against seven other finalists in a model-building test. He passed it and joined the team at the Legoland Discovery Center.
W: That’s a pretty great way to turn a hobby into a career. I’m glad for him!
(Text 9)
W: Hello and welcome to What Next?, the program that looks at today’s career opportunities. Today, we have Jeremy Downs, a detective from the Metropolitan Police, with us. He’s here to tell us about his job and how he got it. Hello, Jeremy.
M: Good morning, Lisa.
W: So, why did you decide to join the police?
M: Well, it runs in my family. My dad was a detective, and so was my grandpa. I always knew that this was what I wanted to do.
W: What qualifications and steps were required for you to be a detective?
M: First, I got a college degree in criminal justice. Afterward, I got two years of experience as a regular police officer. Then I took two tests — one to test my knowledge of the law and the other to test my physical fitness.
W: How do you feel about your job?
M: Well, it’s stressful but I love it. I feel great every time I solve a mystery. That’s the best thing about my job. And I’m usually outside or talking to people, so I don’t spend much time in an office. I’m never bored when I’m working.

Eighteen-year-old Andrew Brackin received a lot of money to go and live in San Francisco for two years. But during that time, he didn’t go to university. Instead, he had to start his own business, a website that helps charities. The money came from Peter Thiel, the co-creator of PayPal. Every year, Peter selects 20 students from thousands of applicants. He only chooses those with the best business ideas. Andrew made it to the last four and then flew to San Francisco for the final. There, he had to present his ideas to an audience of important business people from Silicon Valley. Peter wants to help more students like Andrew. Peter was a student himself. He holds strong views on university education. He feels that many young people apply for degrees without really thinking about what they want to do afterward. Peter is committed to offering a pathway for young people to discover their true passions and career ambitions.

One possible version:
The first thing that came to Liam’s mind was to open that toolbox. He hurried to the shelf, grabbed it, and opened it, his eyes welling with tears. Inside were a bunch of comic books and a letter addressed to him. His grandmother’s familiar handwriting revealed the truth he had never imagined — she had been dying but couldn’t bear to tell him. Knowing this might be her last gift, she had filled the old toolbox — once his late grandfather’s — with his favorite things. She apologized for not decorating it nicely, but every inch of it held a piece of her love.
Liam was heartbroken when he finished reading the letter. Grief crashed over Liam as he realized how many chances he had wasted. The unopened books, the ignored calls, the excuses — none of them could be undone. From then on, every time he visited his grandmother’s grave, he would sit beside her, reading the stories she had once chosen just for him. Each year on her birthday, he placed her favorite flowers by a note, whispering through tears, Happy birthday, Grandma. Your gifts were the best. I only wish I had understood that sooner. I love you — Liam.

第一节
A篇
根据Takachiho Gorge (Japan)部分中的where vivid green waters, surrounded by towering cliffs and rock formations that look like dragon scales(那里清澈的绿水被高耸的悬崖和看起来像龙鳞的岩石构造所环绕)可知,高千穗峡呈现了一个梦幻般的水石奇景,故D项正确。
Giethoorn has no roads — only a system of canals ... and traditional wooden boats.(羊角村没有道路,只有运河系统,居民和游客可以乘坐电动“低语船”和传统木船穿越其中)可知,B项正确。
23. B。 Inspired by Venice, Italy, Los Angeles’s Venice Canal Historic District was designed by developer Abbot Kinney in 1905(洛杉矶威尼斯运河历史街区的设计灵感源自意大利威尼斯,由开发商Abbot Kinney于1905年设计)可知,威尼斯运河历史街区是人为仿造另一个城市建造的,故B项正确。

25. A。 However, as years went by, it became a recipe for disaster when it came to my mental health(随着时间的推移,“过分追求完美”对我的心理健康造成了灾难性的影响)和第三段中的they still arise at unwelcome moments, trying to pull me back into the damaging achievement cycle(消极的想法仍然会在不合时宜的时候出现,试图把我拉回那种有害的追求成就的循环中)可知,“成就瘾”损害了作者的精神健康,故A项正确。

28. A。 These two women might not have ... Daughters Of Tomorrow (DOT) Befriender programme(如果不是通过DOT的陪伴者计划,这两位女性可能永远不会相遇)和第五段中的
29. A。 One of its programmes is an eight-week workshop to build women’s confidence(其中一个项目是为期八周的工作坊,旨在帮助女性建立自信心)可知,该工作坊的主要目的就是提升女性的自我信念,故A项正确。
Volunteers must be women and aged above 30 ... they are journeying with(志愿者必须是女性且年龄在30岁以上,这样她们才能更好地与她们所陪伴的受益人产生共鸣)可知,要求志愿者的年龄在30岁以上是为了让其能更好地与受益人共情,确保能更好地理解她们的处境,故D项正确。

Beautifully produced, the book might lead readers ... the people you meet(这本书制作精美,可能会让读者认为它只是对图书销售起起落落以及所遇到的人的轻松反思)可知,Ruth Shaw的自传给读者的第一印象是对图书销售的一种轻松愉快的描述,故B项正确。
33. C。推断。根据第一段中的hardworking and adventurous parents who passed on to Shaw the same spirit of boldness and determination(勤劳而富有冒险精神的父母,将同样的勇敢和决心传递给了Shaw)、第二段中的The support and love of her parents enabled ... to face new experiences(父母的支持和爱使她重新找到了方向,并有勇气面对新的体验)和第三段中的Despite it all, she demonstrates a truly unbreakable spirit, so her life has been an adventurous one(尽管如此,她展现出了真正不可摧毁的精神,所以她的人生充满了冒险)可推知,Shaw的父母用爱塑造了她热爱冒险的人生观,故C项正确。

②主句是there are deep losses。
③that will leave readers wondering ...

G项中的find them hard to maintain与上文中的两个问题相呼应。
37. E。 E项中的meet your needs, not control or change other people与本段小标题You’re focused on changing others instead of yourself和下文中的focus on what you can change rather than expecting others to adjust相呼应。
38. C。 C项中的in the heat of the moment(一时冲动,情绪激动时)与下文中的in anger相呼应。
A direct “That doesn’t work for me”与上文中的less is often more和keep it simple相呼应。

41. A。42. C。43. B。根据本段中的cooking was more art than和but I still felt I would ... with a single misplaced grain of salt可知,母亲与“我”在烹饪是否需要精确测量上意见相左,她认为烹饪不像科学那样有严格的规则和精确要求,更像是一种艺术。
44. C。45. B。根据本段中的pour rice into the cooker without ...
After the watery mess ended up in the rubbish可推知,“我”的烹饪失败了,而母亲告诉“我”事情不会总是完美的。
48. A。根据本段中的make us a traditional Chinese dinner with potstickers和she chose frozen potstickers with beef and broccoli instead of cabbage and bok choy可推知,母亲尝试为我们做一顿传统的中式晚餐。
49. B。 However, my younger brother, attached to chicken and pizza和So she chose frozen potstickers with beef and broccoli instead of cabbage and bok choy可推知,“我”的弟弟对传统的中式晚餐不感兴趣,所以他拒绝了母亲。 be attached to意为“依恋、喜爱、对……
So she ... instead of cabbage and bok choy可知,母亲因为弟弟的口味偏好作出了调整,因此他应该是满意的,故选pleased。
52. A。根据该空前的having roommates was already a big compromise, but food proved even more可推知,设空处的情感是在a big compromise基础上的递进,即:在大学与室友相处本身就是很大的妥协,但食物方面尤其困难。
I found myself naturally compromising, the way my mother always did, cooking for everyone and ... their preferences可知,室友一起分享了“我”做的饭,由此可推知,一开始室友们要求品尝“我”饭菜的味道,而随着时间的推移,“我”像母亲一样自然地妥协了,在为每个人做饭的同时考虑他们的喜好。
55. B。根据该空后的it’s OK to go off the beaten path, and compromise can lead to something new可知,母亲的烹饪教会了“我”新的道理:不走寻常路也可以,妥协可以带来新事物。

57. which。
58. created。 设空处作后置定语,修饰original pieces as well as prints and officially approved products,且create与original pieces as well as prints and officially approved products之间为逻辑上的动宾关系,应用动词-ed形式,故填created。
59. are。 Scott Benner, who has ... and Tim Strouss, who is unable to move,谓语动词应用复数形式,故填are。
