Learning English Beyond the Classroom
Nowadays, with the growing popularity of smartphones and computers, an increasing number of students are choosing to learn English beyond the classroom in various ways.
It can easily be seen that the percentages of students who choose to listen to English songs and watch English movies are respectively 65% and 50%. However, those choosing to read English books and visit English learning websites only account for 18% and 12%. As far as I’m concerned, it is a disturbing trend. For students, what benefits most to their study is reading English books.
It’s urgent for students to improve their self-discipline, and it’s also advisable that parents and teachers strengthen their guidance, directing students toward more effective learning methods.

W: I often see Northern Mockingbirds and Mourning Doves. Although Northern Cardinals are on the list of the most common backyard birds, I rarely see them.

B.An addiction to screens and social media.

A.How stress affects sleep quality.
B.Why teens have trouble waking up early.
C.How to arrange time properly before bedtime.
【答案】18.B 19.A 20.C
W: Good morning, everyone. It’s time for our weekly health class. How many of you feel tired all the time? Raise your hands, please. Wow, there are a lot of hands! Doctors recommend that teens get at least 8-10 hours of sleep each night. However, in practice, many teens struggle to make it. This is often due to a conflict between nature and modern life. During our teenage years, our body clocks tend to move forward. This natural change makes us want to go to sleep and wake up much later. However, as society usually demands we get up early, the key is finding a way to fall asleep earlier. Later on in the lesson, we’ll be talking about how stress and screen addiction can also impact our sleep. But first, we’re going to study the 10-3-2-1 sleep rule. This means that ten hours before bed, you stop drinking tea, coffee, and other energy drinks. Your last meal of the day should be at least three hours before bed. Homework and other work should be completed at least two hours before bed. One hour before bed, you shut off all screens. These tips will help ready your body for sleep, and help you drop off to sleep much more quickly.
A
Normally I pass my morning commute absorbed in a book, headphones on. I miss a lot of what’s going on around me, but my reading hours are so limited and my “Books Read in2025” list is so embarrassingly short that I give up presence to get a couple of chapters in.
On a recent day, however, I kept my book in my bag and made a game of looking at the people around me and imagining what their voices sound like. This game isn’t really fun, as games go, but it keeps me occupied, noticing, engaged with the world rather than ignoring it.
In his poem “Everything Is Waiting for You,” David Whyte addresses the fundamental error of assuming separateness from everything and everyone else. “As if life were a progressive and cunning crime/ with no witness to the tiny hidden transgressions (越界).” He advises the reader to become alert. “You must note/ the way the soap dish enables you, or the window latch grants you freedom.” The ordinary items around us are animate (有生命的) in his reading of the world. And not only that — they’re likely to look on us favorably, to enable us, free us.
My retreat into books while on the train is only partly about getting reading done. It’s also about shutting out distraction, because I think that whatever is happening around me is disturbing, at the very least extraneous to my central purpose, which is getting from A to B.
Sitting and just being in space with strangers, instead of retreating into a book or a phone, sometimes requires a mental shift. Who and what else is here? What if these noise-canceling headphones are keeping me from hearing the actually quite charming voices of the people beside me? If I want to feel more connected to other people, then what’s protective isn’t always productive.
Or, as Whyte instructs, “Put down the weight of your aloneness and ease into the/conversation.”
21.Why does the author usually bury herself in a book during her commute?
A.To catch up on reading. B.To improve her public image.
C.To observe strangers secretly. D.To make the commute feel shorter.
22.What does David Whyte seem to think of the world in his poem?
A.A test that challenges us. B.A presence that supports us.
C.A stage where we perform alone. D.A place where we make mistakes.
23.What does the underlined word “extraneous” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Irrelevant. B.Dangerous. C.Unusual. D.Essential.
24.What does the author encourage readers to do?
A.Keep to yourself and avoid small talk. B.Escape into books and block out noise.
C.Listen to inner thoughts and reflect on them. D.Put down the headphones and tune in to others.
25.What can we infer from the author’s experience of giving up reading on the commute?
A.She found the game of imagining voices extremely interesting.
B.She realized that being engaged with the world is meaningful.
C.She decided to stop reading books during all her daily trips.
D.She felt disturbed by the noises from the people around her.
21.A 22.B 23.A 24.D 25.B
根据第一段“I miss a lot of what’s going on around me, but my reading hours are so limited and my “Books Read in2025” list is so embarrassingly short that I give up presence to get a couple of chapters in.(我错过了很多身边发生的事情,但我的阅读时间实在太有限了,而我的“2025 年阅读清单”又短得令人尴尬,所以我只好不去关注身边事,只为读上几章)”可知,作者提到他的阅读时间很有限,因此在通勤时沉浸读书时为了抓紧时间阅读。故选A。
根据第三段“He advises the reader to become alert. “You must note/ the way the soap dish enables you, or the window latch grants you freedom.” The ordinary items around us are animate (有生命的) in his reading of the world. And not only that — they’re likely to look on us favorably, to enable us, free us. (他建议读者要保持警觉。“你必须留意到这个肥皂盒是如何帮助你的,或者这个窗户把手是如何赋予你自由的。”在他对世界的解读中,我们身边的普通物品都是有生命的。不仅如此——它们还很可能会对我们表示友好,帮助我们,让我们获得自由)”可知,David Whyte的诗歌解读为周围的事物都是由生命的,它们还帮助我们,解放我们,故说明世界是支持我们的存在。故选B。
23.词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“It’s also about shutting out distraction, because I think that whatever is happening around me is disturbing(也是为了隔绝干扰。因为我认为身边发生的任何事都是令人分心的)”可知,划线词前文提到作者读书是为了隔绝干扰,认为身边发生的事情都是令人分心的,故可推知此处划线词extraneous与A项“Irrelevant(不相关的)”意思相近,周围的事情是令人分心的,至少与我“从A地到B地”的核心目标无关。故选A。
根据最后一段“Or, as Whyte instructs, “Put down the weight of your aloneness and ease into the/conversation.”(或者,正如怀特所教导的那样:“放下你孤独的重负,轻松地加入对话吧。”)”
根据第二段“This game isn’t really fun, as games go, but it keeps me occupied, noticing, engaged with the world rather than ignoring it.(就游戏而言,这款游戏其实并不算有趣,但它能让我保持专注,让我留意周围的事物,从而与这个世界产生互动,而不是选择忽视它)”以及第五段“If I want to feel more connected to other people, then what’s protective isn’t always productive.(如果我想要与他人建立更紧密的联系,那么起到保护作用的东西并不总是有益的)”可知,作者在通勤途中放弃阅读的经历说明了她意识到融入这个世界是有意义的。故选B。
B
The Taklimakan Desert is the largest desert in China. It is about 337,600 square kilometers in Xinjiang. The dry environment makes it difficult for life there. Sandstorms often happen, and the moving sand seriously influences the lives of local people and the natural environment in this area. However, the Chinese government and people have been making much effort to control the desert. Here are some of scientific and effective ways they have used.
One of the main ways is to build a tree belt. By the end of 2023, a 2,761-kilometer-long green belt had already been built around it. In 2024, the last part of the belt, 285 kilometers, was finished. It’s about 3,046 kilometers in total. The belt lies as a strong wall against the spread of the desert.
Biological (生物学的) ways are also widely used. For example, people grow special plants that can grow well with little water, like huyang, suosuo, shabang and so on. These plants hold the sand and reduce sandstorms.
And the method of using solar power generation (太阳能发电) has been used, too. By building greenhouses, people can grow vegetables and fruits. In this way, they can make full use of the land and light in the desert area.
The natural environment around the desert has been improved greatly. The local economy has also been developed rapidly. The success in the control of this desert shows: as long as we have a strong will and use scientific methods, we can protect the environment and build a better future for both people and nature.
26.How does the writer write this text?
A.By telling a story about the past.
B.By listing facts in time order.
C.By comparing two different deserts.
D.By showing a problem and ways to solve it.
27.Why do people build a tree belt around the desert?
A.To make the place beautiful.
B.To stop the desert from growing bigger.
C.To build houses with the wood.
D.To help animals live there.
28.What is the key to success in controlling the desert according to the text?
A.A lot of money and workers.
B.New laws and rules.
C.Strong will and scientific methods.
D.Help from other countries.
29.What is the text mainly about?
A.How big and dry the Taklimakan Desert is.
B.How China is working to control the desert.
C.How people live in the desert.
D.How sandstorms happen.
30.What is the best title for the text?
A.Fighting the Desert with Science
B.The Largest Desert
C.Trees in the Desert
D.Life in Xinjiang
【答案】26.D 27.B 28.C 29.B 30.A
通读全文,尤其是第一段“The Taklimakan Desert is the largest desert in China. It is about 337,600 square kilometers in Xinjiang. The dry environment makes it difficult for life there. 27.推理判断题。根据第二段“The belt lies as a strong wall against the spread of the desert.(这条防护带犹如一道坚固的屏障,阻止沙漠的蔓延。)”可知,人们在沙漠周围修建树带是为了阻止沙漠面积的扩大。
28.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The success in the control of this desert shows: as long as we have a strong will and use scientific methods, we can protect the environment and build a better future for both people and nature.(在控制这片沙漠方面取得的成功表明:只要我们有坚定的决心并采用科学的方法,我们就能保护环境,并为人类和自然创造更美好的未来。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“The Taklimakan Desert is the largest desert in China. It is about 337,600 square kilometers in Xinjiang. The dry environment makes it difficult for life there. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
School days mean homework, studying, exams, and social interactions (互动) — not to mention getting up early every morning. It’s understandable if you don’t always feel your happiest going to school during the week. 31 The following tips can help you feel happier on school days.
Focus on the good things about school. 32 Think about the bigger picture and how your education will have a positive impact on your life in the long run. If you’re having a bad day, tell yourself that you only have to be in school for a relatively short period of your life. After that, the sky is the limit!
Do something nice for someone. Making other people smile can improve your own happiness. 33 Or, thank a teacher for a fun activity or an interesting lesson. If you see someone else that looks like they might be feeling down, tell them you like their hair style or praise the work they have done.
34 If someone isn’t nice to you at school, it’s probably not your fault. Try to remember that nobody is perfect and think about what might be going on in their lives that makes them act negatively (消极地) towards you. Try your best to sweep away a dirty look or a bad comment and move on without getting angry and upset.
Reward yourself. Once you get that big A on your exam or work, don’t forget to go out and celebrate! It’s always great to reward yourself when you do something good especially when it will benefit your future in so many ways! Always believe that you can and you will go a long way! No one can change your future except you. 35
A.A little positive thinking can go a long way towards improving your mood.
B.Try not to take negativity from others too seriously.
C.But it’s also something you can totally improve!
D.Give another student some positive encouragement.
E.Do the best with what you have, and try to have some fun along the way.
【答案】31.C 32.A 33.D 34.B 35.E
31.根据空前句子“It’s understandable if you don’t always feel your happiest going to school during the week.(如果你在上学期间并不总是感到最快乐,这是可以理解的。)”以及空后句子“The following tips can help you feel happier on school days.(以下建议可以帮助你在上学的日子里感到更快乐。)”
32.根据本段中心句“Focus on the good things about school.(关注学校里好的方面。)” 故选A。
33.根据本段中心句“Do something nice for someone.(为他人做一些好事),可知,本段讲述的是为他人做一些好事能带来快乐,根据空前句子“Making other people smile can improve your own happiness.(让别人微笑能提升你自己的幸福感。)”以及空后的句子“Or, thank a teacher for a fun activity or an interesting lesson.(或者,感谢老师带来了有趣的活动或精彩的课程。)”中的并列连词or,可知,此空给出具体的提升别人幸福感的行动方案。D选项(给其他同学一些积极的鼓励。)与后面句式保持一致,使用祈使句,且属于为他人做的好事,符合本段内容。故选D。
34.分析语篇可知,此处应为本段的中心句,与其他段落相同,应为祈使句。根据空后句子“If someone isn’t nice to you at school, it’s probably not your fault.(如果在学校有人对你不友好,那可能不是你的错。)”以及后文“Try your best to sweep away a dirty look or a bad comment and move on without getting angry and upset.(尽你最大的努力不去在意厌恶的表情或不好的评论,不要生气沮丧,继续前行。)”
35.根据空前句子“No one can change your future except you.(除了你自己,没有人能改变你的未来。)”
My grandfather was a master woodcarver. His workshop, a small shed behind our house, was a universe of fragrant cedar (雪松) and pine, where wood shavings curled like secrets onto the floor. To me, his hands performed magic, transforming lifeless blocks into birds that seemed ready to sing. I, however, was drawn to the digital world, where creation happened at the speed of light. I saw his craft as a charming but 36 relic.
When I turned sixteen, Grandfather presented me with a set of carving tools, their wooden handles smoothed by decades of use. “The craft needs new hands,” he said, his eyes hopeful. I accepted them out of 37 , but they soon found a permanent home in a drawer, forgotten.
Years later, I landed a high-pressure job at a tech startup. My days were a blur of code, deadlines, and abstract problems that left me mentally exhausted yet strangely 38 . During a visit home, feeling particularly empty, I wandered into the dusty workshop. The silence was profound, 39 only by the faint scent of old wood. On the workbench lay an unfinished carving — an eagle with one wing spread, the other still trapped in the block. It was 40 , frozen in time, much like my relationship with Grandfather, which had grown distant and formal.
On an impulse, I got back the old tools. Sitting on his stool, I picked up a chisel (凿子). My first attempts were 41 ; I applied too much force and splintered (使裂成碎片) a feather detail. Frustration mounted. This was the opposite of my digital work, where ‘undo’ was a keystroke (按键) away. Here, every cut was 42 .
I returned the next weekend, and the one after. Slowly, a different 43 emerged. The forced slowness became a meditation (沉思). I learned to ‘read’ the wood grain (纹路), to work with it, not against it. The goal was no longer efficiency, but 44 . I wasn’t just carving wood; I was learning patience, a quality my life desperately lacked.
One evening, Grandfather appeared at the doorway. He didn’t speak, just watched. Finally, he stepped in, his hand 45 over the eagle’s head. “The grain here,” he said softly, guiding my hand with his own, “it turns. You must change your angle, or the wood will split.” It was the first real 46 we’d had in years.
That moment became a turning point. Our conversations gradually moved from the specifics of gouges (圆凿) to wider topics — his youth, my dreams, the quiet fear he had that his life’s work would die with him. The unfinished eagle was no longer just a piece of wood; it became a 47 for our connection.
Months later, I placed the final touch on the eagle’s eye. It was far from perfect, but it was complete. I presented it to Grandfather. His eyes glistened (发亮) as he ran a finger over its wings. “You gave it flight,” he whispered. In that moment, I understood. His legacy wasn’t the finished carvings lining his shelves, but the 48 of attention, care, and time he invested — values he had now passed to me.
I returned to my digital world, but I was changed. I began to approach problems with more 49 , valuing elegance and sustainability over raw speed. I realized that true innovation isn’t about constantly chasing the new, but sometimes about 50 what is enduring from the past.
The eagle now sits on my desk. It reminds me that some of the most vital connections in our fast-paced world are not wireless, but are forged (锻造) slowly, by hand, with 51 and love. Grandfather’s workshop taught me that before we can create anything of lasting value, we must first learn to 52 the material, listen to the past and understand each other. It was a lesson in depth, in a world that often mistakes 53 for progress.
The greatest gift he gave me was not the craft itself, but a new lens through which to see: that technology and tradition are not opposing forces, but can inform and 54 each other. The slow, deliberate (从容的) work of the hands can 55 the rapid work of the mind, leading to creations that are not only smart, but also wise.

One possible version:

A
Normally I pass my morning commute absorbed in a book, headphones on.

Building block (积木) toys inspired by traditional Chinese architecture are gaining popularity, serving as a bridge between culture and modern consumption. These products, 56 combine technology with ancient building techniques, have created a market worth over 100 million yuan.
Wang Jihua, a 23-year-old tech worker, recently bought a block set of Xi’an’s Bell Tower. “It wasn’t just a purchase for fun,” he explained. “When the model stands up on 57 (it) own weight without nails or glue, you really appreciate the wisdom of ancient 58 (design). They knew exactly how to balance structure and beauty.”
