They have amazing trunks. Elephants can use their trunks to do a great many things, such as picking up food, digging holes for water, throwing water or sand on their backs to cool down and advising other elephants. The muscles and wrinkles (肌肉和褶皱) of the trunk help them do these things. The wrinkles make it possible for the trunk to move easily. But do you know? Just as some people are left-handed and others are right-handed, there are also “left-trunked” and “right-trunked” elephants. People can tell this by looking at the wrinkles on their trunks. A new study has found this. Why do elephants have “left-trunked” and “right-trunked” differences? Scientists find that elephants like to bend (弯曲) their trunks to one side to put food into their mouths. As time goes by, the trunk on this side gets more wrinkles than the other side. Elephants have about a 50:50 chance (几率) of being “left-trunked” or “right-trunked”. So, it’s not surprising that scientists find half of elephants’ trunks have more wrinkles on the right, and half on the left. What’s more, Asian elephants have more wrinkles on their trunks than African elephants. African elephants have two finger-like structures (指状结构) at the end of their trunks to get things, but Asian elephants have only one. So Asian elephants bend their trunks more often to get things than African elephants. The study helps us learn about elephant skin wrinkles and gives us a new way to look into the growth of the largest land animals. 11. What can elephants do with their trunks according to the text? ①Get food. ②Dig holes. ③Say hi to one another. ④Give advice to others. ⑤Make themselves feel cool. A. ①②③ B. ①③④ C. ①②④⑤ D. ②③④⑤ 12. How can we tell if an elephant is “left-trunked” or “right-trunked”? A. By looking at the color of their trunks. B. By looking at the shape of their trunks. C. By looking at the muscles on their trunks. D. By looking at the wrinkles on their trunks. 13. According to Paragraph 4, if there are 70 elephants, how many “right-trunked” elephants might be? A. About seven. B. About ten. C. About thirty-five. D. About fifty. 14. Why do African elephants have fewer wrinkles on their trunks than Asian elephants? A. Their trunks are shorter. B. They bend their trunks more often. C. They’re smarter and can get food more easily. D. Their trunks have one more finger-like structure. 15. In which part of a magazine can we read the text? A. Interesting Facts. B. Around Asia. C. Warm Stories. D. Travel and Holidays. C 12. D 13. C 14. D 15. 【11题详解】 第一段中提到的象鼻用途:“…picking up food, digging holes for water, throwing water or sand on their backs to cool down and advising other elephants.”。 【12题详解】 第二段中提到:“People can tell this by looking at the wrinkles on their trunks.”。 【13题详解】 第四段中提到:“Elephants have about a 50:50 chance…half of elephants’ trunks have more wrinkles on the right…”。 【14题详解】 第五段提到:“African elephants have two finger-like structures…but Asian elephants have only one.”,且下文指出:“So Asian elephants bend their trunks more often…than African elephants.”。 D Everyone likes to listen to stories. Finding a New Home Together C Elephants are the largest land animals in the world. 11. About seven. B. About ten. C. About thirty-five. D. About fifty. 14. Why do African elephants have fewer wrinkles on their trunks than Asian elephants? A. Their trunks are shorter. B.
