To start a conversation in a foreign country, you can use polite expressions like “hello” or “Excuse me”. These expressions are friendly, and people around you can be happy to help. If you think you might trouble someone, you can say, “I’m sorry but... ” This way, the person knows you cherish (珍惜) their time.
When you need to ask someone for something, try to be clear. You can say, “I was wondering if you could tell me... ” This is a nice way to start a question. Another way is “Could you possibly help me with...? ” This sounds polite and friendly. If you need help finding a place, you might say, “Would you mind helping me find...? ” This direct way is still very polite. If you’re looking for suggestions, you can say, “I was hoping you could give me advice on... ” It shows you care about their opinion.
After you get help from someone, it’s important to say thank you. You can say, “Thank you for your time” or “Thank you so much! ” It shows your appreciation for their help. You can also say, “I’m really thankful for your help.” These words can make the person feel good about helping you.
Sometimes, you might not know if someone speaks English. It’s OK to ask! You can say, “Do you speak English? ” It’s an easy way to find it out. Another way is to ask, “Can you communicate in English?” It lets them answer with yes or no. You could also say, “Are you comfortable speaking English?” It shows you care about their feelings and want to make everything go well.
Asking for help in a foreign country can be simple. Don’t worry if you’re not sure about the language. Just ask nicely. With a sweet smile and a few polite words, you can get the help you need and maybe even make a new friend or two!

Becoming an astronaut is not an easy task and needs many tests.
“Do you snore (打呼噜)?” 56 Recently, many people are talking about this topic on social media. Earlier in October, China started to select (选拔) its fourth group of astronauts, around 12 to 14 people. The requirements are very high. What are they? Let’s take a look.
Good health
To be an astronaut, you need to be very healthy. Good eyesight, a strong heart and strong lungs are important. 57 For example, snoring can make astronauts take in less oxygen. This is very dangerous. You can’t have scars (伤疤), either. They may split open in space. Pang Zhihao, a space scientist, told the Beijing Morning Post.
Hard training
58 You must fly for more than 600 hours without any accidents. You also need to develop your muscles as strong as professional athletes by running, swimming and doing pull-ups. You’ll also wear a 200 kg suit and do tasks underwater for six to seven hours without eating or going to the toilet. This is like doing tasks during a spacewalk.
59
Knowledge is important as well. Astronauts take sixty courses to get ready for a task. The courses include maths, English, spacecraft design, physics and many more. So they will know what to do when something dangerous happens during the work. 60
A. Stay happy
B. Get knowledge
C. If yes, then you can’t be an astronaut.
D. You’d better not have any small problems.
E. They can also do scientific experiments in space.
F. In China, you must be a great pilot before you can be an astronaut.

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容按要求完成任务。
My brother John and I were driving home together and started talking. Because of this, John took a wrong turn.
Unluckily, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge, and we had no way of turning back. We had to pay $4 to cross the bridge. He was clearly unhappy by the mistake.
As we drove forward, John noticed a car pulled over to the side of the road. A young man was standing nearby and trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to find out which way we went next, but John pulled over and asked the man if he needed any help. And he found the young man had a flat tire (漏气轮胎).
John helped him change the flat tire. The young man said that this had been a bad week for him. Earlier he had a car accident, and now this flat tire on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us. After we finished the work, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 and tried to give it to us. “No,” John said. “We shouldn’t get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into a chance to help you.”
Nobody can avoid making mistake, but mistakes can lead to meaningful help and kindness. That was the bridge we were supposed to cross.

One possible version:
How to Challenge Myself
Every student has areas where they feel less confident, and for me, that was English. I had trouble reading and writing, often stumbling over my words. And I was too nervous to speak in front of others. There are two reasons why I struggle with English. First, I had no interest in it, so I was not careful enough in class. Second, I didn’t practice often, which makes it hard to remember what I learn.
To improve it, I set clear goals, such as thinking hard and trying to answer questions in class. I also spent more time reading and reviewing notes regularly. To make progress in writing, I stuck to keeping a diary every day. When I had questions, I always asked my teacher and classmates for help in time. Now I’m getting better at English. In last exam, I even got a B. I’m still weak in writing, but I will work harder and stay patient.
Challenging ourselves leads to progress. Don’t fear difficulties — just step out and try!
