Hi Jenny,
I like my new school. There are many fun clubs here. My favorite is the Community Volunteer Club. The club gives us a chance to help other people.
This term, we are helping out at a special school for disabled children. I am helping to read books to the children. Mrs. Brown organizes our club. She says that I am really good with children. I think that is because I have two little sisters.
Next term, we will visit some elderly people. We will read stories and news to them.
Many clubs are just for fun, but in our club, we help others and have fun at the same time. Everyone is very nice, and I’ve made new friends here.

Later, my mum learned that the second candidate got the job. “Her body language showed she was confident and ready for the position,” the interviewer said.

Mortise and tenon joint (榫卯结构) is a traditional Chinese woodworking method. It has a history of over 7, 000 years. This method connects wooden parts without using nails (钉子) or glue. Many ancient Chinese buildings, such as the Palace Museum, use mortise and tenon joints. These buildings have stood for hundreds of years, even through storms and earthquakes. That’s because the joint can adjust to (适应) changes in temperature and humidity (湿度). It makes the buildings more stable.
Today, mortise and tenon joint is still used by some craftsmen. They make furniture, doors and windows with this method. Many young people are also interested in it. Hi Jenny,
I like my new school.
What about you? Have you made new friends too? Please write back soon!
Yours,
Mary

Last month, my mum attended a job interview for a sales manager position as an interviewer. There were two candidates (候选人) . The first candidate walked in with his head down, avoided eye contact, and sat with his arms crossed. He spoke in a quiet voice and kept touching his face. The second candidate, however, had a big smile, gave a firm (有力的) handshake, and sat up straight. She looked at the interviewers directly when talking and nodded to show she was listening carefully.
Later, my mum learned that the second candidate got the job. “Her body language showed she was confident and ready for the position,” the interviewer said.
A few weeks later, my mum had an important meeting with a new client (客户) . At first, the client seemed cold and uninterested. My mum smiled warmly, leaned forward (身体前倾) when listening, and nodded often. Slowly, the client relaxed and started sharing more ideas. They finally signed a big deal.
This experience taught me that body language is a powerful tool. It can help us make a good first impression, show our true feelings, and build strong connections with others.

Mortise and tenon joint (榫卯结构) is a traditional Chinese woodworking method. It has a history of over 7, 000 years. This method connects wooden parts without using nails (钉子) or glue. The mortise is a hole cut into one piece of wood, and the tenon is a projection (凸起) on another piece. When they fit together, the joint becomes very strong.
Some schools even teach students about this traditional skill. They want to pass down this valuable cultural heritage. Mortise and tenon joint shows the wisdom of ancient Chinese people. It’s not just a woodworking skill, but also a symbol of Chinese culture.
32. How long is the history of mortise and tenon joint?
A. Over 5, 000 years. B. Over 6, 000 years.

C. Because they are made of stone. D. Because people fix them every year.
35. We can learn ________ from the passage.
A. mortise and tenon joints will break easily
B. people today are not interested in this traditional skill anymore
C. mortise and tenon joints are an important part of Chinese culture
D. mortise and tenon joints can only be used for making small things

I worked with two helpful Chinese women. Some people didn’t come to me because they thought I couldn’t speak Chinese. To break the ice, I smiled and greeted the people in Chinese. They were surprised and happy to hear me speak Chinese.
One day, a family from Shaanxi came by. The young boy shouted, “Waiguoren!” I smiled and asked if they needed any help. The father wasn’t sure at first, but one of my workmates said, “He can speak Chinese!” Then the father started talking to me. He asked me lots of questions about my country. Later, I asked him about his hometown. He told me about Xi’ an and the Silk Road. His son even practiced a few words with me. We all had fun.
