After graduating from high school, the three of us girls kept in touch. But as we got older, years passed without seeing each other. We changed careers, circumstances and addresses.
In the spring of 2014, after Rich and Chris spent a weekend riding trails together in Virginia, Chris suggested the three of us plan a tour. I was a little worried before that first tour. How well did we know each other after all these years? Did we have as much in common as we used to? Would we have enough to talk about? We would be on trails for hours at a time for days. What if none of these were fun?
Actually, I needn’t have worried. We had plenty to talk about. We knew each other better than ever. We got tired and cranky. But the tour was fun. On the trails we talked about common friends we had, new friends we had, books, movies, and music. We circled back to certain conversations and revisited what we had heard or said.
Moving through a changing landscape and following the rivers or the coast seem to enable us to think more broadly and deeply. Having no goal other than reaching our accommodation before dusk presents an unexpected opportunity to deepen our understanding of each other and ourselves. And such unhurried days in nature in the company of friends turn out to be conducive to reflection.
Some places on the trails stay with me more than others. Encounters, too. Among them is the elderly retriever (寻回犬) on Prince Edward Island, waiting for us at the door of Shaw’s Hotel. It’s because, I think, the pleasures that we don’t anticipate stay with us for a longer time and get richer over time. Among these are
friendships that persist despite life’s ups and downs, or because of them.
As I write, Chris and Rich are preparing to fly to California, where we’ll ride the Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur, near my home. Already, Tour 3 is underway. In our messages we joke with one another, testing out our lines. We plan, we disagree and complain, we express enthusiasm, and we start conversations, knowing they’ll continue on the trails — just as our friendship does.
24. What was the author’s primary concern about the planned tour in 2014?
A. The potential of failing to enjoy the trip.
B. The cost of the tour.
C. The difficulty of riding trails.
D. The physical challenges during the trip.
25. What is one benefit of travelling together without a specific goal?
A. Increasing physical strength. B. Discovering rare landscapes.
C. Improving communication skills. D. Encouraging deeper thoughts.
26. What does the author imply about unexpected pleasures?
A. They fade quickly with time. B. They grow deeper over time.
C. They depend on travel modes. D. They become less meaningful.
27. Why does the author mention Tour 3 in the last paragraph?
A. To contrast it with past experiences. B. To highlight an upcoming travel plan.
C. To indicate the continuation of friendship. D. To emphasize unsolved disagreements.

Many years ago, people used tapes to make recordings. Some families even have recordings of the locals performing in a language that no longer exists. In the field of language research, such recordings are beyond priceless. The digital platform, PARADISEC (Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures), digitizes these tape recordings and includes thousands of hours of audio. Such audio represents about 1,360 languages, which may be the only known recordings. Like a window into human cultures, PARADISEC allows us to learn more about the variety of languages around us.
Similar to aged objects, many of the tapes are dirty and in poor condition, which need special care. And screeching (刺耳的声音) happens when a tape is dried out and can’t move through the player easily. The screeching covers the audio sound that language researchers want to record. Thanks to a researcher, Sam King, who built a machine called the LM-3032 Tape Restorator in 2019, people are able to play many unplayable tapes again.
The machine works by applying a special material to the surface of a tape. This leaves behind an extremely thin film of lubrication (润滑) that aids smoother operation, making it easier to play the tapes and allowing for digitization. Tests have shown that this process has no negative long-term effects on the tape. In fact, tapes treated with this method five years ago still play without issues.
“This technological power gives us the opportunity to listen to the records. It feels wonderful to know that your language has been recorded and safely stored somewhere in the world. Hearing it spoken by people you’ve never met, from 50 or 60 years ago, is truly amazing. It is most heartwarming to know that it is possible to uphold the life of my language. Researchers have made great contributions to saving those valuable recordings before it’s too late,” said E’ava Geita, an official of Papua New Guinea, an island country.
28. What is the purpose of PARADISEC?
A. To record historical events. B. To translate ancient languages.
C. To store endangered languages. D. To digitize cultural performances.
29. What is mentioned about the old tapes?
A. Their designs are out of style. B. Their damage harms sound quality.
C. Their contents disappear over time. D. Their repair requires costly methods.
30. What is the effect of using the LM-3032 Tape Restorator?
A. To increase the storage space of old tapes.
B. To make damaged tapes playable again.
C. To digitalize the audio recordings.
D. To copy tapes for long-term sale.
31. How does E’ava Geita feel about the technological recordings?
A. Deeply moved and thankful. B. Highly proud and confident.
C. Slightly doubtful and worried. D. Truly confused and unsatisfied.

CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere keep rising, and the world’s oceans are flooded with plastics, which puts marine environments and ecosystems at risk. The key global problems are often interconnected, and typically, the solution to one problem brings about another problem while the clock keeps ticking. But what if we could solve several problems at the same time?
It’s almost too good to be true, but a new cutting-edge invention promises to do just that. Researchers at the University of Copenhagen have developed a method, where one man’s trash really does become another man’s “treasure”, when PET plastic that is broken down becomes the main ingredient in efficient CO2 capture (捕获).
“The beauty of this method is that we solve a problem without creating a new one. By turning waste into a raw material that can actively reduce greenhouse gases, we make an environmental issue part of the solution to the climate crisis,” says Margarita Poderyte from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen.
The solution is a potential win-win on a global scale, where plastic waste not only does not end up in nature but also becomes an active player in climate improvement. With the new chemical technology, researchers can transform PET plastic waste that is thought little of by recyclers into a primary resource in a new form of CO2 sorbent (吸附剂) they have developed. The process “upcycles” it to a new material the researchers have named BAETA, which can absorb CO2 out of the atmosphere more efficiently when compared with existing carbon capture technologies.
The BAETA material features a powder-like structure and a chemically “upgraded” surface, which enables it to very effectively combine and chemically capture CO2. Once it reaches the maximum volume, CO2 can be released through a heating process, allowing the CO2 to be concentrated, collected and stored or changed into a sustainable resource. Compared with existing technologies, this process is relatively mild and highly suitable for industrial-scale applications.
32. What can we know about the global environmental problems?
A. Their solutions often end in failure.
B. Ocean pollution is the toughest one to deal with.
C. They may create new challenges when one is solved.
D. They are rooted in increasing CO2 concentrations.
33. What does the author think of the new method?
A. It sounds unrealistic but works well. B. It badly needs further improvement.
C. It takes advantage of existing technologies. D. It is only for industrial applications.
34. What does the text imply about BAETA?
A. It can transform plastic waste into toxic materials.
B. It involves a process too difficult for industrial-scale applications.
C. It is far less efficient than existing CO2 capture technologies.
D. It allows the captured CO2 to be released for certain purposes.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. More Efforts to Reduce Plastic Waste.
B. Inventing New Materials for Daily Use.
C. The Harm of CO2 to Marine Ecosystems.
D. Turning Plastic Waste into Climate Savers.

Take some time and identify what hurt you. ____37____, so don’t rush the process, if you want to be angry, scream it out or let out some tears. Sort through your feelings and identify what it is exactly that hurts you so much. Name what hurts you so you know what you’ll eventually be forgiving.
____38____. You may never understand why they did what they did, but it can sometimes help to see things from their eyes. Imagine you had done what they have. And remind yourself how much being forgiven would mean to you. Remember, we’re all human and we are nowhere near perfect. A little empathy (共情) might help you get to a forgiving state of mind faster.
Put your feelings down on paper. For the really hurtful things, some deliberate self-reflection and expression of feelings is necessary. ____39____. Put pen to paper and imagine you’re saying everything you couldn’t say to your wrongdoers. Once you’ve finished, you may realize you don’t need to say it to them at all, and you will feel relieved.
When you’re ready to let it all go, focusing on the present can help. Keep your mind focused on what’s going well in your life. Give all your energy to positive activities, instead of uselessly pouring it into something you can’t change. ____40____, but acknowledge it and bring yourself back into the present moment.
A. Time heals all wounds
B. Put yourself in their position
C. Writing is a great way to do that

The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma’s farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great chance for you to stay with your grandma.” Dad said as he drove. Every moment, we were moving farther away from the city, the place where I knew how to do things right.
The car engine wasn’t off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look unhappy Why?” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money her neighbor Mr. Jackson had lost because of my mistake? Was he still upset with me? “I’m fine,” I answered. “I’m just missing my computer camp. Computers are something I’m good at.” “That sounds disappointing.” Grandma nodded.
I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone, and Mr. Jackson was like family to her. Then one day I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds He lost almost all his roses for the farmers’ market.
Now, back at the farm. I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr. Jackson! He was opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled to her. “Just a second for the freshly harvested roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
However, Mr. Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent (有能力的) computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn’t mean you never make mistakes.”
I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us? We want to sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts (零件) for our internet connection, but we just can’t set it up,” Grandma asked. No Internet. They seemed to live in the twentieth century.

A 25. D 26. B 27. C

C 29. B 30. B 31. A

C 33. A 34. D 35. D
根据第一段中的“The key global problems are often interconnected, and typically, the solution to one problem brings about another problem while the clock keeps ticking.(全球主要环境问题往往相互关联,通常解决一个问题的同时会引发另一个新问题)”可知,全球性环境问题在被解决时,往往会产生新的挑战。
根据第二段中的“It’s almost too good to be true, but a new cutting-edge invention promises to do just that.(这听起来好得令人难以置信,但这项前沿发明有望真正实现这一目标)”可知,作者认为这种新方法听起来不太现实,却切实可行、效果良好。
根据第五段中的“Once it reaches the maximum volume, CO2 can be released through a heating process, allowing the CO2 to be concentrated, collected and stored or changed into a sustainable resource.(一旦吸附达到饱和,可通过加热释放二氧化碳,便于浓缩、收集储存或将其转化为可持续资源)”可知,BAETA材料吸附的二氧化碳可被释放,并用于特定用途。
通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“Researchers at the University of Copenhagen have developed a method, where one man’s trash really does become another man’s “treasure”, when PET plastic that is broken down becomes the main ingredient in efficient CO2 capture (捕获).(哥本哈根大学研究人员研发出一种方法,将废旧PET塑料分解后,用作高效捕获二氧化碳的主要原料)”以及后文介绍该技术变塑料垃圾为碳吸附新材料、改善气候的内容可知,文章核心是把塑料废弃物转化为缓解气候问题的有益物质,所以D选项“Turning Plastic Waste into Climate Savers(变废塑料为气候守护者)”最能概括全文核心,适合作为最佳标题。

固定搭配as a matter of fact,意为“事实上”,所以此处使用介词as,位于句首,首字母大写。
此处为固定搭配allow sb. to do sth.,意为“允许某人做某事”,所以用动词不定式to practice作宾补。

Maybe I could be someone who was really competent.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Maybe I could be someone who was really competent. “I can definitely help with that! Where are the parts?” Following Grandma, I went into the room, where a computer sat surrounded by some scattered parts. Rolling up my sleeves, I carefully connected everything. It was a piece of cake to me. “Done!” I announced confidently. After a few adjustments, the Internet was up and running. Now it was time to sell the roses. I decided to start from my social media platform. I quickly uploaded photos, added descriptions, and set prices. Before long, notifications started showing up — people were noticing. My abilities made a difference!
Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in. “This is amazing, Jude!” Grandma cheered with joy as she began bustling about, packing flowers. Mr. Jackson chuckled warmly as he handed me another bunch to label. The energy was electric — everyone was on their feet, moving quickly to keep up with the growing orders. The farm felt alive, and so did I. To our surprise, the roses sold out in just half a day. “You’ve brought the farm into the twenty-first century, Jude,” Grandma hugged me tightly. I realized that being competent wasn’t about avoiding mistakes, it was about facing them head-on and making the most of my strengths.
