3. The strict professor can’t tolerate ________ the same mistake again, but the student, unwilling to admit his carelessness, insisted that his answer ________ correct in some sense.
A. the student’s making; be B. the student making; were
C. the student’s making; had been D. the student making; was
4. ________ no convincing evidence presented, the judge had no choice but ________ the suspect of all charges.
A. There being; to clear B. There was; clearing
C. There was; to clear D. There being; clear
【答案】A
had作谓语动词,逗号前后无连词,“________ no convincing evidence presented”不能是一个独立的分句,因此第一空不能填There was,使用“There being ...”构成独立主格结构,表示“存在某种现存情况”,作“法官撤销对嫌疑人的所有指控”的原因状语,相当于“Because there was no convincing evidence presented”;“have no choice but to do sth.”
5. It is strongly recommended by the environmental group ________ the government ________ the new factory near the wetland, ________ that the area is home to over 200 migratory bird species.
A. what; must ban; considered B. that; ought to ban; considering
C. that; ban; considering D. what; ought to ban; considered
6. ________ the damaged ecosystem can recover naturally largely depends on the extent ________ the local government is willing to stop the illegal logging.
A. If; that B. Whether; to which
C. If; to which D. Whether; that
【答案】B

7. ________ demonstrates the greatest improvement in both academic performance and community service will be awarded with the scholarship, ________ their background is.
A. Anyone; whatever B. Whoever; no matter what
C. No matter who; no matter what D. No matter who; whatever
8. ________ the newly elected mayor would prioritize environmental protection was exactly ________ the majority of citizens had been hoping for.
A. What; what B. That; which
C. Whether; that D. That; what
9. ________ he known about the hidden rocks beneath the surface, he ________ his boat into that area —— the accident could have been entirely avoided.
A. Had; would not have sailed B. If; would not sail
C. Had; would not sail D. If; would not have sailed
【答案】A
由语境可知,本题是对过去情况的虚拟,从句用Had + 主语 + 过去分词倒装结构,相当于If he had known;主句用would/could/might + have done。所以第一空填Had,第二空填would not have sailed。
10. ________ enough data in the experiment, we are now reaching a stage ________ we will analyse the data.
A. Having been collected; that B. Collecting; when
C. Having been collecting; as D. Having collected; where
【答案】D

B
— 3 tablespoons butter
— 2 eggs
— 2 medium carrots
— 1 small white onion
— 3 cloves garlic
— 4 cups cooked and chilled rice
I bet you didn’t read those numbers.
I’ll let you in on a secret — I didn’t either.
The ingredients above were copied and pasted from the first online search result for “fried rice recipe”. But, without any disrespect to the recipe’s owner, I can tell you it’s wrong.
The only true fried rice recipe is no recipe at all. There are no measurements, no exact instructions, no timer for how long something should sizzle in the pan. There are only smells and feelings and memories. I learned to cook fried rice on the rickety stool covered in stickers, surrounded by the scents of my Grandma’s apron. We used however much leftover rice we had and a combination of anything and everything sitting in the fridge. The kitchen was always a little messy, but that was part of the fun.
Yet I’ve always been more of a baker than a cook. I enjoy recipes — I enjoy the process of being exact and finding details, adjusting and leveling and weighing. From a young age, I found comfort in the careful baking recipes in Western cookbooks.
But I understand the beauty of spontaneity (即兴) and organic creation. There’s something special in realizing that no two recreations of my grandma’s fried rice will ever be the same, and really, isn’t that what life is? Creation, without recipe?
It’s funny. This may contradict everything I’ve written thus far, but the more I bake, the more I realize perhaps baking is spontaneous too. I don’t always need to weigh my flour beforehand in order to get perfect cookies. My signature food is cupcake, but I challenged myself to use a different recipe every time. You’d be surprised at how different cupcakes taste when you add an extra egg, and you’d be especially uncertain about my baking skills if you tried my cupcakes that had way too much baking soda (trial and error…).
I’m learning to love going with the flow. It’s not mutually exclusive with loving precision, and it’s such an integral part of my culture; I’d be missing out otherwise. Coming to terms with and embracing the unknown is scary, but I assure you: One day, I’ll master my own fried rice.
14. What does the author think of the fried rice recipe?
A. It provides inaccurate details. B. It includes too many ingredients.
C. It misses the essence of cooking. D. It contradicts the basics of cuisine.
15. The author enjoys baking because of ______.
A. her hope to pass recipes on B. her love of precision and detail
C. her interest in a different culture D. her desire to honour family traditions
16. The author’s cupcake experiments made her more ______.
A. open-minded B. organized C. confident D. clear-headed
17. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Fond memories make a dish tasty. B. Precision and creativity are inseparable.
C. Creativity prospers where rules end. D. Life doesn’t always come with a recipe.
C 15. B 16. A 17. D

根据第四段“The only true fried rice recipe is no recipe at all. There are no measurements, no exact instructions, no timer for how long something should sizzle in the pan. There are only smells and feelings and memories.(唯一正宗的炒饭做法其实根本就没有固定的步骤。没有具体的用量,没有精确的步骤说明,也没有关于食材在锅中翻炒时间的计时器。有的只是各种气味、感受和回忆)”可知,作者认为这份炒饭的食谱忽略了烹饪的精髓所在。故选C。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“I enjoy recipes — I enjoy the process of being exact and finding details, adjusting and leveling and weighing.(我喜欢研究食谱 —— 我享受那种精准操作、捕捉细节、不断调整、找平、称重的过程。)”
根据倒数第二段“My signature food is cupcake, but I challenged myself to use a different recipe every time.(我的招牌菜(拿手菜)是纸杯蛋糕,但我每次都尝试使用不同的配方来制作)”以及最后一段“I’m learning to love going with the flow.(我正在学着享受顺其自然的生活方式)”可知,作者的纸杯蛋糕实验让她变得更加开明。故选A。
根据第六段“There’s something special in realizing that no two recreations of my grandma’s fried rice will ever be the same, and really, isn’t that what life is? Creation, without recipe?(当意识到我奶奶的炒饭每次的制作方式都不尽相同时,我感到非常惊喜。而说到底,这不正是生活的样子吗?没有固定的模式,却能创造出独一无二的成果)”可知,文章告诉我们生活并非总是有固定的“配方”可循。故选D。
C
In New Jersey’s suburban intersections, an immature Cooper’s hawk (鹰) was at work. It was unfolding a novel hunting strategy that would astonish even seasoned ethologists, which was documented by University of Tennessee researcher Vladimir Dinetes in his study Street smarts: a remarkable adaptation in a city-wintering raptor (猛禽).
Over 18 freezing winter mornings, Dinetes observed from a parked vehicle as birds gathered on the sidewalk to eat food left by residents. In a nearby tree, a young hawk waited, listening for a specific electric sound that signals it’s safe to cross the street. This high tone, tied to a red-light extension from 30 to 90 seconds, meant cars would stretch farther back along the block, forming a dense line. When that line reached a certain point, the hawk would launch an attack, flying low along the sidewalk, hidden by the line of waiting cars. Then it would slip, bursting into the birds’ feeding space and securing an exceptionally high hunting success rate.
Critically, the hawk avoided attacks on weekends when cars didn’t line up sufficiently long to provide a visual barrier. This selectivity proved no accident: The hawk had learned to link the signal sound, traffic patterns and hunting opportunities.
Cooper’s hawks, once restricted to deep woodlands, have inhabited North American cities since the 1970s, but only one urban-adapted behavior — hunting near sunset lights — was previously recorded. Dinetes’ finding adds a far more complex strategy, one that demands mapping environments, tracking time-based clues and carrying out plans.
Dinetes explains, “The hawk doesn’t evolve urban skills anew but uses pre-existing problem-solving ability meant for forest hunts where it measures flight angles and escape paths amid branches. Its forest hunting skill translates into viewing city traffic as branches and crosswalks as tree gaps. This cross-contextual thinking — where a biological instinct is adapted to an artificial landscape — is one of the hallmarks of intelligence in the animal kingdom.”
As cities grow, understanding how animals adapt will be crucial for conservation and coexistence strategies. The study highlights the interplay between wildlife and human environments.
18. What does the author primarily intend to tell us in paragraph 2?
A. Local residents care for birds well. B. Prolonged signal duration causes traffic jam.
C. The hawk is skilled at timing its hunt. D. The hawk tends to launch attacks randomly.
19. Why did the hawk avoid its hunt on weekends?
A. Birds didn’t search for food then. B. Light traffic failed to provide enough cover.
C. Traffic lights were out of function. D. Bystanders interfered with its behavior.
20. What lesson can we learn from the hawk’s cross-contextual thinking?
A. Use available resources strategically. B. A patient heart eats the sweet fruit.
C. Don’t follow others blindly. D. The early bird catches the worm.
21. What kind of writing method is mainly used in the text?
A. Explaining a finding with relevant data. B. Defending a view through an experiment.
C. Presenting a study with specific facts. D. Narrating a story in time order.
C 19. B 20. A 21. C
根据第二段中“When that line reached a certain point, the hawk would launch an attack, flying low along the sidewalk, hidden by the line of waiting cars. Then it would slip, bursting into the birds’ feeding space and securing an exceptionally high hunting success rate.(当车流排到一定长度时,鹰便发起攻击,沿着人行道低空飞行,被排队等候的车辆遮挡。随后它猛冲过去,闯入鸟群觅食区,狩猎成功率极高)”可知,这只鹰非常擅长把握狩猎时机。故选C。
【19题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Critically, the hawk avoided attacks on weekends when cars didn’t line up sufficiently long to provide a visual barrier.(至关重要的是,鹰会避免在周末发动攻击,因为周末车辆没有排成足够长的队来提供视觉屏障)”可知,周末车辆少,无法为鹰提供足够的掩护,所以鹰避免在周末狩猎。
根据第五段“Dinetes explains, ‘The hawk doesn’t evolve urban skills anew but uses pre-existing problem-solving ability meant for forest hunts where it measures flight angles and escape paths amid branches. Its forest hunting skill translates into viewing city traffic as branches and crosswalks as tree gaps. This cross-contextual thinking — where a biological instinct is adapted to an artificial landscape — is one of the hallmarks of intelligence in the animal kingdom.’(迪内特解释说:‘鹰并没有重新进化出城市技能,而是使用了原本用于森林狩猎的预先存在的解决问题的能力,在森林中它会测量树枝间的飞行角度和逃生路径。它的森林狩猎技能转化为将城市交通视为树枝,将人行横道视为树间空隙。这种跨情境思维——将生物本能适应到人工环境中——是动物王国中智力的标志之一。’)”可知,鹰把原本用于森林狩猎的技能转化到城市环境中,也就是有策略地利用现有的资源。故选A。
通读全文,尤其根据第一段“In New Jersey’s suburban intersections, an immature Cooper’s hawk (鹰) was at work. It was unfolding a novel hunting strategy that would astonish even seasoned ethologists, which was documented by University of Tennessee researcher Vladimir Dinetes in his study Street smarts: a remarkable adaptation in a city-wintering raptor
D
Artificial intelligence (AI) researchers have long dreamed of tools to supercharge science — asking novel questions, designing and running experiments. Recently, large language models (LLMs) have made discoveries that some AI developers claim have inched us closer to that future. But how do you test whether an AI model can truly do science?
For answers, researchers turn to benchmarks (基准): standardized sets of questions or tasks that help measure an AI’s efficiency and reliability and compare it against other models. But the complexity of science makes assessing their aptitude especially challenging. As Hao Peng, a computer scientist at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, puts it: “Models have all this knowledge. Do they know how to use it?”
Dozens of new science-focused benchmarks have emerged over the past year to answer that question, but scientists have yet to settle on a single best approach. One of the most popular, published in Nature, is Humanity’s Last Exam (HLE). It uses 2500 questions drawn from “the frontier of human knowledge” to put LLMs through their paces. One, for example, asks how many types of sensory receptors the human skin contains. “We wanted a diverse dataset that only experts who have been working on a field for a long time can answer,” says Long Phan, a research engineer with the HLE’s developer.
Since the HLE first appeared as a preprint in January 2025, the benchmark has become an important proving ground for LLMs and HLE scores are now a common talking point for AI companies seeking to highlight the capabilities of their products. At the HLE’s launch, the leading developer OpenAI’s old model won the best score at a mere 8.3%. Earlier this month, Google claimed that its latest reasoning model for science, called Gemini 3 Deep Think, had achieved a new record HLE score of 48.4%.
But some scientists argue that many of the HLE’s questions test for little-known or even useless knowledge, rather than an ability to do meaningful research. A Nature editorial accompanying the HLE’s publication also raised this issue: “We think that more scientists should be asking: What would it take to develop an AI benchmark that truly measures expert-level thinking?”
22. What does the underlined word “aptitude” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Knowledge. B. Performance. C. Intelligence. D. Progress.
23. What does Long Phan stress about HLE?
A. Its topic diversity. B. Experts’ involvement in it.
C. The expertise of its dataset. D. Its data-backed popularity.
24. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. HLE’s role as a key AI test. B. Companies’ use of HLE.
C. HLE scores of leading AI models. D. The process of HLE’s launch.
25. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. AI Still Can’t Do Real Science.
B. The Rise of HLE: A Benchmark for AI.
C. What Makes a Good Science Benchmark?
D. Google Beats OpenAI on HLE.
B 23. C 24. A 25. B
根据第二段中的“For answers, researchers turn to benchmarks (基准): standardized sets of questions or tasks that help measure an AI’s efficiency and reliability and compare it against other models. But the complexity of science makes assessing their aptitude especially challenging.(为了找到答案,研究人员求助于基准:一套标准化的问题或任务,有助于衡量人工智能的效率和可靠性,并将其与其他模型进行比较。但科学的复杂性使得评估它们的aptitude尤其具有挑战性。)”可知,基准有助于衡量人工智能的效率和可靠性等,而科学复杂使得评估其相关方面有挑战,结合选项可推测“aptitude”意思是“表现、能力”,与“Performance”意思相近。
【23题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的““We wanted a diverse dataset that only experts who have been working on a field for a long time can answer,” says Long Phan, a research engineer with the HLE’s developer.(HLE开发人员之一的研究工程师Long Phan说:“我们想要一个多样化的数据集,只有长期从事某个领域研究的专家才能回答。”)”
根据第四段“Since the HLE first appeared as a preprint in January 2025, the benchmark has become an important proving ground for LLMs and HLE scores are now a common talking point for AI companies seeking to highlight the capabilities of their products. At the HLE’s launch, the leading developer OpenAI’s old model won the best score at a mere 8.3%. Earlier this month, Google claimed that its latest reasoning model for science, called Gemini 3 Deep Think, had achieved a new record HLE score of 48.4%.(自2025年1月HLE首次以预印本形式出现以来,该基准已成为大型语言模型的重要试验场,HLE分数现在成为人工智能公司寻求突出其产品能力的常见话题。在HLE发布时,领先开发商OpenAI的旧款模型仅以8.3%的成绩获得最佳成绩。本月早些时候,谷歌声称其最新的科学推理模型Gemini 3 Deep Think取得了48.4%的HLE新纪录。)”可知,本段核心围绕HLE作为AI科学能力关键测试工具的作用展开。
【25题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“But how do you test whether an AI model can truly do science?(但是如何测试一个人工智能模型是否真的能做科学呢?)”、第二段中的“For answers, researchers turn to benchmarks (基准): standardized sets of questions or tasks that help measure an AI’s efficiency and reliability and compare it against other models.(为了找到答案,研究人员求助于基准:一套标准化的问题或任务,有助于衡量人工智能的效率和可靠性,并将其与其他模型进行比较。)”

How many times do you find yourself in a conversation with someone, waiting for the other person to stop talking so you can say what you want to say? ____26____ This common experience shows a lack of active listening, because you are only thinking about how you want to respond.
Communication that leads to real human connection involves active listening and empathy. Active listening includes eye contact as well as verbal and non-verbal acknowledgments that you are listening. ____27____ Empathy involves reflection, validation and a genuine concern for how others are feeling. This combination of active listening and empathy — empathetic listening — can improve relationships of all kinds.
____28____ Being brave enough to share with another person is a vulnerable position to be in. Imagine sharing something sad with a friend: “I studied so hard for the math exam, but I still failed it.” Consider these two potential responses and how they would make you feel.
“Oh well, I’m glad I’m not the one taking that exam. Want to hang out?”
“That must be so hard. Thank you for sharing with me. I am here for you.”
The first response might leave one feeling dismissed. Why do people respond like that? Perhaps the comment comes from a place of the listener being uncomfortable with hearing something that taps into their own fears or vulnerability. ____29____ The second response, however, might make one feel heard, seen and supported. It shows the listener heard what the other person was saying, understanding and expressing concern.
So how do you know what to say or not to say when someone shares something difficult with you? Sometimes, the best thing to do is to sit and listen. Brene Brown, a renowned researcher in this field, says it best: “Empathy is a strange and powerful thing. There is no script. There is no right way or wrong way to do it. ____30____”
A. Shifting the topic might bring comfort to the speaker.
B. These include nodding, confirming, and clarifying questions.
C. Just be empathetic and you’ll have thought-provoking conversations.
D. It’s simply listening, withholding judgment, and emotionally connecting.
E. Everyone wants to feel understood for speaking their thoughts and feelings.
F. The listener may want to shut down the conversation and move to a safer space.
G. You might even expect the other person to completely tune into what you are saying.
G 27. B 28. E 29. F 30. D

根据上文“How many times do you find yourself in a conversation with someone, waiting for the other person to stop talking so you can say what you want to say?(你有多少次在和别人交谈时,等着对方停下,好让你说出自己想说的话?)”
根据上文“Active listening includes eye contact as well as verbal and non-verbal acknowledgments that you are listening.(积极倾听包括眼神交流,以及表明你在倾听的语言和非语言反馈。)”
根据下文“Being brave enough to share with another person is a vulnerable position to be in.(有勇气向他人分享内心想法是一种脆弱的状态。)”
根据上文“Perhaps the comment comes from a place of the listener being uncomfortable with hearing something that taps into their own fears or vulnerability.(也许这种回应源于倾听者听到触及自身恐惧或脆弱的内容而感到不适。)”
根据上文“Empathy is a strange and powerful thing. There is no script. There is no right way or wrong way to do it.(共情是一种奇妙而强大的东西。它没有固定脚本,也没有所谓正确或错误的方式。)”可知,前文总结共情没有固定模式,空处需要点明共情的本质。D选项(它只是倾听、不做评判,并在情感上产生联结。)精准概括共情倾听的核心,与上文观点一致,符合语境。故选D项。

“Did you bring your doll?” my friend Reba gave off me at the door. I showed her the bag. I was hiding behind my back and followed her to her bedroom — all to herself, unlike the one I shared with my sister. But envy struck when I saw the newest doll on her shelf with a stylish wardrobe To me, Reba was the luckiest girl. Yet I wanted to level the playing field with one of the birthday presents I was expecting.
Settled on the floor, I presented my hand-me-down doll — a figure with unbiased legs, dated hair, faded fabrics, and mismatched shoes. Meanwhile, everything about Reba’s doll, from its silly hair to cool sunglasses, said young and free. With a click, Reba folded its knees, settled it behind the wheel of its tiny convertible (敞篷车) car and rolled it away with a goodbye wave to mine.
As night fell, it was time to head home. We parted with a promise to compare our dolls another day. I knew a convertible was a fantasy, so my birthday wish was simple: a genuine, store-bought fashion set for my doll, anything brand new. My parents always did the best they could for my sisters and me, and I knew my mom would take my request to heart.
Finally, the big day arrived. Mom offered her gift — a humble shoebox. I lifted the top carefully. The shoebox was full to the top, but as I pulled out the top piece, my heart sank. It wasn’t a store-bought set. I knew that fabric — it was from my own outgrown clothes.
“Brand-new and never been worn by a doll!” Mom said. “I made these outfits just for you!” She was so proud of her accomplishment. I swallowed my disappointment and ran over to hug her. She must have been secretly working at her sewing machine for weeks, carefully cutting out patterns, choosing fabrics, adding tiny details with her needle and thread and an abundance of patience. All so my doll could look her best. But they were not what I had desired, after all.

Reba invited me over to play a few days later. I put my shoebox under my arm, knocked on the door and prepared to be envious. “Look! I got three fashion packs!” she announced, spreading them on the bed. And I hesitantly opened my shoebox. Reba peered in, then carefully lined up a couple of my outfits beside hers. “They’re...not store-bought,” I said quickly before she could point it out. “My mom made them.” Reba grew quiet, studying each piece and holding some up to the light. Her curiosity slowly melted into a different expression — one I recognized
“Lucky you!” Reba said, her eyes shining with envy. She gently took one of them, her fingers tracing the fine needlework. “May I?” she whispered, holding it up to her doll. “Look,” she breathed. “It fits perfectly.” She then tried each piece on her own doll. “Fashion packs are common,” she whispered, “but your shoebox holds stories.” Reba’s words struck me deeply: her envy wasn’t for the items, but for the love and patience woven into them by mom's hands. At that moment, my old hand-me-down doll, dressed in love’s vocabulary, was beyond compare. And I finally felt I was the luckiest girl in the world.
