Usually high school students only have a two-day weekend to travel. How can you make it relaxing and fun? This article offers some simple tips to help you enjoy your break.
Choosing the Right Destination
Choose a suitable destination that is not too far from your home so you don’t spend most of your time on buses, trains, or planes. You might visit a nearby city or explore a new area in your own town. The most important thing is to spend your time enjoying the place, not just travelling to it.
Planning but Staying Open
Make a simple plan before you go. Check the opening hours of the sights you really want to see, and book your hotel in advance. If there is a popular restaurant you want to try, you can make a reservation. At the same time, don’t fill every minute. Leave some free time in your schedule for surprise discoveries.
Experiencing Local Life
Try to experience local life instead of only visiting famous sights. Talk to people who live there and ask them where they like to eat or relax. They often know small shops or parks that are not in guidebooks. A slow walk through a local street or an hour in a café can easily become your favorite memory of the trip.
In the end, remember that the purpose of a weekend break is to rest and enjoy yourself. Get up a little earlier, put away your phone, and notice what you see and hear. Even a short trip can give you new energy and a fresh view of the world.
21. What is the key to choosing a travel destination?
A. Choosing a famous faraway city.
B. Spending most time on the journey.
C. Exploring popular tourist spots only.
D. Picking a place not too far from home.
22. What should we do when making a travel plan?
A. Ignore the opening hours of the scenic spots.
B. Create a simple plan and leave some free time.
C. Fill every minute of the schedule with activities.
D. Book a hotel and make restaurant reservations immediately.
23. What is the text mainly about?
A. Weekend trip advice.
B. Short holiday plans.
C. Local life experiences.
D. City walk destinations.

Once again, I was at a new school. So was a girl in my class named Paris. That was where the similarities ended. I was tall and she was small. I was one of the oldest in the class while she was the youngest. My hair was thick, short and ugly while hers was long and beautiful. I was awkward and shy. She wasn’t. I couldn’t stand her, considering her my enemy. But she wanted to be friends.
One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too shocked to say no. Actually, no one had invited me to play before. But this girl, who wore the latest fashions, wanted to invite me.
She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room place. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies — which was my next surprise. I would have thought she had outgrown them. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor of a walk-in cupboard laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That’s when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older. We both had wild imaginations.
We had a great time that afternoon. She showed me her outfits, which had mostly come from a designer clothing store down the block. The woman who owned it sometimes used her as a model for her newspaper ads and gave her clothes in exchange.
Paris charmed (吸引) the whole neighborhood. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free pieces. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other’s houses and spent every free moment together. I let my hair grow out and learned to love being tall.
Paris, my first real friend since childhood, helped me get through my tough teenage years and taught me an amazing thing about making friends: “Your worst enemy” can turn out to be your best friend.
24. What was the author’s first impression of Paris?
A. She held a poor opinion of Paris.
B. She was proud of her personality.
C. She thought she was similar to Paris.
D. She hoped to become friends with Paris.
25. What was the author’s first surprise from Paris?
A. Paris invited her to play at home.
B. Paris lived in a small flat.
C. Paris still played with Barbies.
D. Paris shared her writing dream.
26. What influence did Paris have on the author?
A. She stayed shy and awkward. B. She hated her tall height.
C. She gave up writing. D. She grew more confident.
27. Which is the best title of the text?
A. My Teenage School Life
B. An Unexpected Best Friend
C. A New School and a New Friend
D. Paris, the Popular Girl in Neighborhood
C
He’s as big as a small golden dog and covered with scales (鳞片). He is the pangolin (穿山甲), an endangered animal.
According to the wildlife trade monitoring organization Traffic, about one million pangolins were killed from 2000 through 2013, mainly for their scales, which are used in medicine. Pangolins are sensitive creatures and picky eaters that only eat certain species of ants, a diet that’s very difficult to copy in the food chain.
“In the last decade, there’s been a huge growth trade in pangolins between continents, especially their scales,” says Dan Challender, chair of the pangolin specialist group. Previously, most pangolin killing happened within Asia, he says. This shift means that Asian pangolins are becoming difficult to find but that the value of the scales makes it worth the extra cost to take pangolins from Africa to Asia secretly.
All eight species of pangolins, four in Africa and four in Asia, are in danger of extinction due to the illegal trade. International trade in the four species of Asian pangolins has been proscribed since 2000. In the past few years, a rule against international commercial trade in all eight species has gone into effect. It was voted by 183 governments that are parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which is in charge of cross-border trade in wild animals and their parts.
Pangolins are eaten as bushmeat in western and central Africa and by some local groups in South and Southeast Asia. Their parts are also used in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa as traditional medicine. Typically dried, ground into powder, and put into pills, pangolin scales are used in a range of traditional medicines to help mothers who have given birth to babies to recover. But they are now endangered. Perhaps no pangolins can be seen when our next generation grow up.
28. What can we learn about pangolins from paragraph 2?
A. They eat all types of ants. B. They are hunted for their meat.
C. A million pangolins died in 2013. D. Their eating habits are hard to copy.
29. What does the underlined word “proscribed” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Allowed. B. Forbidden. C. Developed. D. Promoted.
30. What’s the author’s attitude towards pangolins’ future?
A. Positive. B. Uncaring. C. Concerned. D. Confident.
31. What is most likely to be talked about next?
A. The history of CITES. B. The ways to protect pangolins.
C. The living habits of pangolin species. D. The differences between various pangolins.
D
Exercise is really good for our health, but it’s not that helpful for losing weight. A new analysis of 14 research experiments tells us why. When people exercise more, they burn extra calories, but their bodies make up for it by using less energy for other daily things. This effect is even stronger if people exercise more and eat less at the same time — it can totally cancel out the extra calories burned during exercise.
Herman Pontzer from Duke University found this when studying hunter-gatherers in Tanzania. They live very active lives, but they use no more total energy than people who work at a desk all day. He thinks our bodies have developed to limit energy use, saving energy in other ways when we exercise more.
Pontzer and his partner studied about 450 people in total. They found that people’s total energy use only rose by a third of what was expected from more exercise. For example, burning 200 extra calories a day through exercise only made total energy use go up by about 60 calories. And for those who ate less while exercising, their total energy use didn’t rise at all.
The type of exercise also matters. This energy compensation (补偿) only happens with aerobic (有氧的) exercise like running. But for weightlifting, people’s total energy use even went up more than expected, because the body burns extra energy to repair muscles. But weightlifting makes people gain muscle, not lose fat, so it’s still not a good way to lose weight.
Some scientists still doubt these findings and call for more careful studies, but the results show clearly how our bodies react to exercise and dieting.
32. Why is exercise less helpful for weight loss?
A. Bodies reduce energy use in other activities.
B. People can’t stick to regular exercise.
C. Exercise makes people take in more calories.
D. Exercise burns far fewer calories than expected.
33. How is the third paragraph mainly organized?
A. By listing research data.
B. By explaining causes and effects.
C. By comparing different opinions.
D. By giving examples and figures.
34. Which of the following exercises can cause the body’s energy compensation?
A. Running. B. Weightlifting.
C. Pull-ups. D. Push-ups.
35. What do we know about the research findings?
A. They have been fully proved with no limitations.
B. They are supported by all animal and human research.
C. Some scientists still need more evidence to accept them.
D. They have completely changed people’s way of losing weight.

Recently, I started my first day of high school. A lot of people build up the first day to be the most panicking (令人惊恐的) thing. I went from a tiny middle school to this big high school and was expecting not to know where anything was. I also was panicking because I knew ninth grade would have higher expectations than eighth, and I wasn’t sure how I would do at taking on that challenge. The one thing that kept me calm was that my best friend Dora is actually at my new school, so I have someone to talk to or at least go to when I don’t know what I’m doing.
I had to take the bus to school, which was not something I’d had to do before. Dora and I took the bus together and we talked the whole way there about how we thought the first day would turn out. When we entered the school, everyone was hugging and saying hi and I was embarrassingly (令人尴尬地) standing there and holding onto my friend’s bag through the crowd of people. I hated crowds so I stayed with Dora who was probably angry by me holding onto her the whole morning. I started to calm down when we all were waiting for the first bell to ring. When Dora and I had to separate, I didn’t want to go to class. When I did, I simply stood at the door because I had no idea where to sit. I sat in the way back. My teacher seemed friendly so I was a little calm. My deskmate Jane barely talked, but when she did, she seemed really nice.
Although a lot of students might not laugh when I made a strange joke, they weren’t rude. My teachers told us about the high expectations for their school and I was kind of worried because I came from a school where I didn’t have too much work or high expectations. After maths class, we needed to go to another classroom to have history class.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I almost entered the wrong classroom for history, totally embarrassed.

W: It’s surely a better idea. We each get the books we like.

A 25. A 26. D 27. B
根据原文第一段“I couldn’t stand her, considering her my enemy. (我无法忍受她,把她当成我的敌人。)” 可知,作者起初对Paris印象很差、看法不好。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据原文第二段“One day, she invited me over and I said yes — I was too shocked to say no. Actually, no one had invited me to play before. (有一天,她邀请我去她家,我答应了 —— 我震惊得无法拒绝。事实上,以前从没有人邀请我去玩。)” 可知,Paris主动邀请作者去家里玩,是作者对Paris感到意外的第一件事。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据原文第五段“Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other’s houses and spent every free moment together. I let my hair grow out and learned to love being tall. (很快我也融入了她奇妙的小世界。我们互相留宿,空闲时间都在一起。我留长了头发,也开始接纳并喜欢自己高挑的身材。)” 可知,在Paris的影响下,作者变得更加自信。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据原文最后一段“Paris, my first real friend since childhood, helped me get through my tough teenage years and taught me an amazing thing about making friends: “Your worst enemy” can turn out to be your best friend. (Paris是我童年之后第一个真正的朋友,陪我度过难熬的少年时光,也让我领悟到一个关于交友的奇妙道理:你眼中最大的对手,可能会成为你最好的朋友。)” 及全文内容可知,文章核心是讲述一段意料之外的挚友情谊,最佳标题为“一位不期而遇的挚友”。
D 29. B 30. C 31. B
根据第二段“Pangolins are sensitive creatures and picky eaters that only eat certain species of ants, a diet that’s very difficult to copy in the food chain.(穿山甲是十分敏感的动物,而且它们的饮食偏好十分独特,只吃特定种类的蚂蚁。这种饮食结构在食物链中很难被其他生物所复制)”可知,穿山甲的饮食习惯很难被模仿。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“All eight species of pangolins, four in Africa and four in Asia, are in danger of extinction due to the illegal trade.(所有八种穿山甲(其中四种在非洲,四种在亚洲)都因非法交易而面临灭绝的危险)”以及后文“In the past few years, a rule against international commercial trade in all eight species has gone into effect. It was voted by 183 governments that are parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which is in charge of cross-border trade in wild animals and their parts.(在过去几年里,一项禁止所有八种物种进行国际商业交易的规定已正式生效。该规定是由参与《濒危野生动植物种国际贸易公约》的183个国家投票通过的。该公约负责监管野生动植物及其部分制品的跨境交易)”可知,穿山甲因非法贸易濒临灭绝、后文出台全面禁止国际贸易的规定,故划线词意思是“禁止”。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But they are now endangered. Perhaps no pangolins can be seen when our next generation grow up.(但它们现在正濒临灭绝。也许当我们的下一代长大了,就看不到穿山甲了。)”可推断,作者对于穿山甲的未来表示担忧。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Pangolins are eaten as bushmeat in western and central Africa and by some local groups in South and Southeast Asia. Perhaps no pangolins can be seen when our next generation grow up.(穿山甲在西非和中非被当作野味食用,南亚和东南亚的一些当地族群也有食用穿山甲的习俗。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I almost entered the wrong classroom for history, totally embarrassed.

By the end of the day, my fear had disappeared.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I almost entered the wrong classroom for history, totally embarrassed. I stepped back quickly and stood by the wall, my face burning with shame. I froze at the door, feeling all the eyes in the classroom were on my face. Just then, Jane approached softly and noticed my trouble. She tapped my shoulder and gestured to the right classroom with a warm smile. I followed her and made it to the right classroom just before the bell rang. Her quiet kindness melted away my awkwardness immediately.
By the end of the day, my fear had disappeared. I rushed to the school gate and saw Dora waving at me with a big smile. I ran to her and told her everything — Jane’s timely help, the patient teachers, and how no one laughed at my silly joke. We talked and laughed all the way on the bus home. I no longer worried about high school life. I know it’s a new challenge, but I’m brave enough to face it with friends around me.
