At first glance, the two photos look like exact copies: a young cyclist beneath the glaciers near the Everest Base Camp, with his bike on his shoulder, face fixed in determination. The same spot, same light, same shadows. Yet they were taken 40 years apart.
The first photo shows Perce Hughes, a cycling enthusiast who set out in 1984 at the age of 22 on an adventure that took him across Europe, through Asia and eventually to Sydney. In the second, William, Perce Hughes’ son, recreated his father’s pose almost four decades later.
“I was raised on my dad’s stories,” William told Cyclists Circle, “and the adventure was always calling to me.” And so, in September 2024, also at the age of 22, he carried out a plan of pedaling from the English town of Chatsworth on a 25,000-kilometer, 19-month ride to Sydney.
Finding the right bicycle wasn’t easy. William had searched online for the steel-framed touring bike his dad rode, and finally got it for £600. Then there was the task of pinpointing where his dad’s photos were taken. He dived into records, mapping out every documented route. And for the trickier locations, he turned to AI for help. “It wasn’t always smooth, but I kept trying.” The result? A striking set of images — the same places, the same poses, sometimes even the same faces.
One photo shows Perce Hughes with a young boy and his parents. William tracked down the location and, although the parents had passed away, he was able to meet and pose with the man the young boy had become.
But the recreated moment that moved him the most was the Everest shot — bike on his back, glacier in the background. “Every time I stood on the exact spot where he would have stood, I felt a deeper connection to Dad. The only thing dividing us was time. I’ve heard stories from my dad my entire life, and now I’m there in the places where those stories took place. It’s very, very special.”
4. What do we know from the two photos?
A. They record the growth of a man.
B. They were shot four decades apart.
C. They display the power of nature.
D. They were taken by the same person.
5. Why did William come up with the plan?
A. To challenge his own limits. B. To recall his childhood.
C. To relive his father’s adventure. D. To photograph the journey.
6. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Images of different locations. B. Worries before the adventure.
C. Memories preserved in photos. D. Preparations made for the journey.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Documentary of the Everest. B. Recreated Photos Across Time.
C. Great Challenges in a Journey. D. The Fun of Long-distance Cycling.

A Chinese-Uzbek archaeological team has discovered a remarkable 3,000-year-old city along the Silk Road, providing new insights into urban development during the early Iron Age in Central Asia.
Originally discovered in 1969, the Bandikhan Ⅱ site, covering 107,639 square feet, is known as an archaeological treasure. It was in 2023 that archaeologists began exploring and later confirmed it as the largest and best-preserved settlement dating back to the early Iron Age. The findings are key evidence for the development of urban layouts (布局) from the Bronze Age to the early Iron Age.
Among the recovered objects in the Bandikhan Ⅱ site were pottery pieces, including jars, bowls and flat-bottomed dishes, whose forms and delicacy matched those found in an urban civilization. Compared with other known sites, it displays notable advances during that time. Stone tools at the site suggest that grain was processed on-site. Also, bronze knives, arrowheads and seashells were found.
These impressive findings have brought excitement to researchers who plan to expand their work in upcoming seasons. Yet the China-Uzbekistan archaeological cooperation is about more than unearthing ancient cities. The same team has been working to bring local communities, especially the youngest generation, closer to the heritage and turn it into an open-air classroom.
During International Museum Day this year, over 40 students visited this Silk Road city and set out on a cultural journey through time. Students learned about key discoveries made by the team and how archaeologists jointly saved the site. The students also closely observed the ruins and unearthed objects, experiencing the charm of the Silk Road’s glorious history. “This event stands as a highly insightful practice in public archaeology of the Silk Road,” says Thomas Carta, senior director of the archaeological team.
Students stood atop the ruins to feel history firsthand — an immersive education that breaks the limitations of textbooks. “As it turns out, the Silk Road that connected the world is hidden right along our path home from school,” a student exclaimed excitedly.
8. What is special about the BandikhanⅡsite?
A. It was located in Central Asia. B. It was first discovered in 2023.
C. It has preserved the most treasures. D. It shows evolution of urban layouts.
9. What can be inferred from the recovered objects?
A. They are highly advanced for their time.
B. They reflect the rural civilization.
C. Their forms and delicacy are undervalued.
D. They uncover agricultural secrets.
10. What does Thomas Carta think of the event?
A. Enlightening. B. Popular. C. Complex. D. Demanding.
11. What is the value of the students’ on-site visit?
A. It provides them a natural journey.
B. It improves their teamwork ability.
C. It offers engaging learning experiences.
D. It shows the glory of modern architecture.
D
Human identity is a complex and ever-changing topic, and it has experienced a significant shift in the digital era. Decades ago, most people defined themselves primarily by their personal qualities, family values and the roles they played in their local community. However, in today’s fully linked world, people’s sense of self is increasingly intertwined with the things they consume, especially on various social media platforms.
On popular social media apps, many users, particularly young people, link their self-image closely to the lifestyle choices they make online. For instance, some choose to follow minimalist living trends, posting pictures of simple daily items, while others favor vintage style, collecting old clothes and accessories to show their unique taste. These choices are no longer just about daily needs; they become a way for people to build and show their identity to others.
This phenomenon is not entirely new, as early marketing experts in the 1920s had already found that products could play a part in shaping how people see themselves. Today, this trend has become much more obvious, with more people defining themselves by what they buy and follow rather than their inner character.
This change brings about a paradox (矛盾): many people hope to stand out and be unique, yet they blindly follow carefully planned online trends, which turn their personal identity into a kind of product that can be bought and sold. Besides, digital culture has gradually weakened real community bonds. In the past, people with different opinions could talk openly and still maintain friendly relationships. But now, most people stay in online echo chambers where everyone holds similar views, and few are willing to listen to different voices. This lack of meaningful communication breaks the social ties that used to connect different groups of people, making real interpersonal connections weaker than before.
12. What does the underlined word “intertwined” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Compared. B. Satisfied. C. Connected. D. Filled.
13. Why do many young people follow various lifestyle trends online?
A. To show off their wealth. B. To improve their living skills.
C. To form and express their identity. D. To make more online friends easily.
14. What can we infer about “online echo chambers” from the last paragraph?
A. They discourage similar opinions.
B. They define people’s daily demands.
C. They strengthen real interpersonal bonds.
D. They block acceptance of different voices.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Changes brought by marketing development.
B. Influences of digital age on human identity.
C. Popular social media apps among the youth.
D. Ways to build healthy interpersonal identity.

It was a cold, rainy Tuesday evening in our small suburban home. The smell of mom’s braised pork filled the kitchen, but the dinner table felt as chilly as the weather outside. My 14-year-old brother, Ethan, dragged his schoolbag to the chair, slumping down and immediately grabbing his smartphone, his eyes glued to a cartoon before he even took a bite.
As the eldest sister, I’d been desperate to connect with him, to know more about his middle school life and the thoughts he kept locked away. Every night at dinner, I tried every way to strike up a conversation. I asked about his math tests, his soccer practice, the little things that made him laugh or frustrated him.
“Did anything fun happen at school today?” I asked gently, pushing a plate of vegetables toward him.
“Nothing much!” he mumbled, shrugging his shoulders without looking up.
I tried again, focusing on his favorite hobby. “How’s your robot project going? You’ve been staying up late working on it, right?”
He only whispered, “OK.”
No matter how hard I tried, all my sincere efforts only got short, cold answers: “Good,” “Yeah,” “Fine.” Not a single detailed sentence, not a single glance my way. Our communication stayed shallow, and the dinner table was often filled with embarrassing silence that made me feel helpless. To make matters worse, Ethan was always glued to his screen, ignoring our calls even when mom urged him to eat more.
I was determined to find a way to bring back the warmth of our family meals. One weekend, while browsing the bookstore downtown, I came across a useful book about family communication. It offered many practical, creative ideas to encourage deep, meaningful talks among family members. These ideas instantly gave me hope to rebuild our warm family dinners.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Inspired by the book, I made two simple but clear rules for our family dinner.

C 13. C 14. D 15. B
根据第一段“Decades ago, most people defined themselves primarily by their personal qualities, family values and the roles they played in their local community. However, in today’s fully linked world, people’s sense of self is increasingly intertwined with the things they consume, especially on various social media platforms. (几十年前,大多数人主要通过个人品质、家庭价值观以及在当地社区中所扮演的角色来定义自己。然而,在当今这个全面互联的世界里,人们的自我意识越来越intertwined与他们消费的东西,尤其是在各种社交媒体平台上。)”可知,过去和现在人们定义自己的方式形成对比,这里强调现在人们的自我意识与消费的东西紧密相连,intertwined意思是“相连的,交织的”,与Connected意思相近。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“On popular social media apps, many users, particularly young people, link their self-image closely to the lifestyle choices they make online.(在流行的社交媒体应用程序上,许多用户,尤其是年轻人,将他们的自我形象与他们在网上做出的生活方式选择紧密联系起来)”以及“These choices are no longer just about daily needs; they become a way for people to build and show their identity to others. (这些选择不再仅仅是关于日常需求;它们成为人们向他人建立和展示自己身份的一种方式。)”可知,许多年轻人追随各种网络生活方式潮流是为了形成和表达自己的身份。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But now, most people stay in online echo chambers where everyone holds similar views, and few are willing to listen to different voices. This lack of meaningful communication breaks the social ties that used to connect different groups of people, making real interpersonal connections weaker than before. (但现在,大多数人待在在线回音室里,每个人都持有相似的观点,很少有人愿意倾听不同的声音。这种缺乏有意义的交流打破了曾经连接不同人群的社会纽带,使真实的人际关系比以前更加脆弱。)”可知,“online echo chambers”阻碍了不同声音的接受。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Human identity is a complex and ever-changing topic, and it has experienced a significant shift in the digital era. (人类身份是一个复杂且不断变化的话题,在数字时代它经历了重大转变。)”以及文章内容可知,本文围绕数字时代人们身份认同的变化、带来的矛盾以及对人际关系的影响等方面展开论述,所以文章主要讲的是数字时代对人类身份认同的影响。

【16题详解】
根据空前的“For many people, leaping into the water on the edge of a major urban area might be uninviting. Floating rubbish and unpleasant smells are enough to keep them away.(对许多人来说,在城区边缘下水游泳可能毫无吸引力,漂浮的垃圾和难闻的气味足以让人却步。)”和空后“What is Swimmable Cities?(什么是“可游泳城市”?)” E选项“But Swimmable Cities aims to get people to do just that.(但可游泳城市组织旨在让人们做到这一点)”语义转折,契合上下文逻辑。
根据空前的“Swimmable Cities is an international organization calling for global cooperation to make urban waterways clean enough to swim in.(可游泳城市是一个国际组织,呼吁全球合作,让城市水道洁净到可以游泳。)”可知,此处介绍该组织定位,D选项“Its goal is to improve water quality in urban rivers.(它的目标是改善城市河流的水质)”承接上文,补充组织目标,符合语境。

Stormwater from city rains picks up pollutants, finally ending up flowing into rivers.(很多人从不思考生活垃圾的去向,城市雨水裹挟污染物最终流入河流。)”
根据空前的“Even with legal frameworks and wastewater treatment in place, many urban rivers still carry dangerous levels of harmful bacteria, which can cause many health issues.(即便有法律体系和污水处理设施,许多城市河流仍含有超标有害细菌,会引发诸多健康问题。)”以及空后的“Thus, good water quality is essential to cities.(因此,良好的水质对城市至关重要。)”可知,空格处承接污染带来的双重影响,G选项“It is not just an ecosystem issue, but a critical health concern.(这不仅是生态问题,更是严峻的健康隐患)”承上启下,衔接前后文。
根据空后的“Harmful bacteria levels have dropped greatly, fish have returned to the rivers, and urban waterways are becoming significantly cleaner and safer.(有害细菌含量大幅下降,鱼类重回河道,城市水道变得更加干净安全。)”可知,后文列举水质改善的具体成果,F选项“Cities across the globe are also achieving pleasant results.(全球各地城市也取得了可喜成效)”总起下文,引出具体治理成果,符合语境。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Inspired by the book, I made two simple but clear rules for our family dinner.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Surprisingly, amazing changes gradually took place in our family.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Inspired by the book, I made two simple but clear rules for our family dinner. Looking directly into my brother’s eyes, I explained the rules patiently, “First, put away your smartphone during meals. Second, we share one thing from our day, whether it’s a happy moment or a small trouble.” He lowered his head and twisted his fingers for a second, and then looked up at me with a reluctant but obedient smile. “Fine, I’ll try,” he mumbled. I smiled and patted his arm lightly, hoping to ease his nervousness. Then I began to share my own day casually, taking the lead to start our conversation.
Surprisingly, amazing changes gradually took place in our family. The cold silence that once hung over the dinner table was replaced by soft chats and occasional laughter. Wearing a proud smile, my brother opened up a little bit more, talking about how he played with classmates during breaks, and how he managed to complete the robot project. Without smartphones during meals, my brother and I started to exchange interesting stories. These small changes made me realize that family warmth lies in sincere communication, and the distance between us was gradually narrowed, bringing back the warm and harmonious atmosphere we once lost.
