We stayed inside until the street became quiet. He showed me around his nice little room. He didn’t ask for money or try to sell me anything. A new, large-scale study finds that rising temperatures from the climate crisis are reducing people’s sleep across the globe. Researchers studied sleep data from wristbands (手环) of 47,000 people over 7 months, covering 68 countries. The result shows that higher night-time temperatures make people around the world lose about 44 hours of sleep every year.
However, lost sleep affects some groups much more than others. The sleep loss per degree of warming is about 25% higher for women than men, twice as high for those over 65 years old and three times higher for those in less affluent nations, since they have fewer ways to cool down.
Higher temperatures are already known to harm health, causing more heart problems, mental health issues and accidents. Poor sleep leads to similar health risks, and researchers believe poor sleep is a main reason why heat damages people’s health. They also find people cannot get used to hotter nights.
Lead researcher Kelton Minor says this study proves warmer temperatures cut sleep worldwide, and the real situation may be worse. He advises policymakers to design heat-adapted towns and buildings to protect public health. However, the study’s data mostly comes from rich countries, with fewer poor people included. More research is needed in hot, low-income areas.

An internship is more than just a summer job — it is a great chance to learn new skills, explore your career interests, and build professional connections. For high school and college students, a good internship can open doors to future jobs.
First, set clear goals before starting. Do you want to learn how to use certain software? Or practice communicating with clients? Writing down your goals will help you stay focused and make the most of your time.
Second, be proactive. Don’t just wait for tasks to come to you. Ask your supervisor (主管) for more work when you are free. Offer to help colleagues with small projects. This shows you are hard-working and eager to learn.
Third, take notes and ask questions. You will learn a lot of new things every day, so keep a notebook to write down key skills and important information. If you don’t understand something, ask for help — most supervisors are happy to guide interns who show interest.
Finally, build your network. Talk to your coworkers and ask about their career paths. Connect with them on professional social media like LinkedIn. These relationships may help you find job opportunities later.
Of course, internships also have challenges. You might feel nervous at first or make small mistakes. But these experiences are part of learning. By the end of your internship, you will grow into a more confident and capable young professional.
