The Big Three: Forests, Wetlands and Oceans
An ecosystem is a community of living things and their environment. There are many different ecosystems on Earth, among which forests, wetlands and oceans are the three most important ones.
Forests cover about 30% of the earth’s land. Plants in forests take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, so people call forests the “lungs of the earth”. They also hold dust and clean the air.
Wetlands are areas with plenty of water. They cover less than 7% of the land but are home to nearly half of all wildlife. During heavy rains, wetlands store lots of water like sponges. They also clean water by taking in bad things, so they are called the “kidneys of the earth”.
The ocean covers over 70% of our planet. It produces most of the oxygen we breathe and keeps the earth’s temperature balanced.
All these ecosystems keep our planet healthy and lively.
