What are people supposed to do when they meet for the first time? They are supposed to...

When we talk about crossing cultures, we often think about the differences in greetings, food, or festivals. But there is more to it than just these obvious things. The way people communicate, show respect, and even express feelings can be very different from one country to another.
For example, in many Western countries, people are taught to speak directly. If they disagree with someone, they will say so clearly, even if it might sound a little impolite to others. However, in some Asian cultures, people prefer to speak indirectly to avoid making others lose face. They will often use soft words and body language to show their true meaning, instead of saying “no” straight away.
Another big difference is the use of personal space. In countries like the US or the UK, people usually stand about an arm’s length away when talking to others. They feel uncomfortable if someone stands too close. But in places like Italy or Mexico, people stand much closer, and they may touch your arm or shoulder while talking. If you step back, they might think you are being cold or unfriendly.
These differences can cause problems when people from different cultures meet. A Western businessperson might think their Asian partner is being unclear and unhelpful. The Asian partner might think the Westerner is being rude and aggressive. Neither of them means to be rude; they are just following the rules of their own culture.
To avoid these misunderstandings, it is important to learn about cultural differences before you travel or work with people from other countries. Being open, patient, and willing to learn is the best way to cross cultures successfully.
