Lightning usually destroys trees it hits. But scientists have found an amazing tree. It not only lives through lightning strikes (击中) but actually grows better because of them!
For years, scientists thought lightning was only bad for trees. But as they explored places like the Amazon rainforest, they started to think there could be trees that fight against lightning. It wasn’t until about 100 years ago that such “super trees” were discovered.
Now, they know of a tree that uses lightning’s power to kill nearby trees and get more sunlight and nutrients (营养) for itself.
In 2015, scientist Evan Gora saw a Dipteryx oleifera tree (香豆树) , which had been struck by strong lightning. It wasn’t badly harmed while the neighboring trees were killed. Scientists thought this tree could handle lightning, but there was no way to be sure.
Gora and his team saw more of these trees that grew well after lightning strikes. So, they did a study. They followed 93 trees struck by lightning for 2-6 years. They found that all 9 Dipteryx oleifera trees in the study survived with little harm. But 84 other trees were badly hurt, and 64% of them died within two years.
These Dipteryx oleifera trees are very tall and have wide tops, making them 68% more likely to be struck by lightning than other trees. During the study, one of the Dipteryx oleifera trees was struck twice in5 years but continued to grow well.
At present, more studies suggest that these trees attract lightning on purpose to destroy other trees and get more nutrients. Scientists are not sure how these trees survive lightning, but they guess it may involve the trees’ ability to carry electricity. They are also interested in other trees with similar characteristics.

C.Study how trees attract lightning better. D.Plant more Dipteryx oleifera trees.
Weiqi, commonly known as Go in English, is a board game that originated in ancient China. The game is considered one of the Four Arts that Chinese literators’ were required to master. Besides weiqi, they had to learn Chinese calligraphy (shu), painting (hua) and the guqin playing (qin).
Weiqi has a history of over 4,000 years, even older than Chinese chess. According to some historical records, the game, known as yi in its early years, is said to have been invented by Yao. Seeing that his son had a bad temper (脾气), Yao was rather worried. So he decided to find something that could help educate his son, and a simple board game came to him.
The rules of weiqi are simple: using black and white stones (棋子), two players take turns placing their stones on empty cross points of the board. The goal is to surround (包围) a larger total area on the board while preventing one’s own stones from being taken by the opponent (对手). Stones do not move and are only taken off the board if they are completely surrounded.
The scene of two people playing weiqi appears in many traditional Chinese paintings. The image of a player holding a stone over the board, looking for a place to put it, was later turned into a popular Chinese idiom (成语), which means “unsure about making a move”. The expression is still widely used today.
With its development, weiqi grew in popularity. Later, it spread to the Korean Peninsula, Japan and Western countries. Today, it has become an international board game.

Long ago, in ancient China, there was a story about the invention of silk. People believed that silk was first invented by Leizu. She learned how to make cocoons (蚕茧) into soft and strong cloth. This magical cloth was so valuable that it was called “China’s Gold”. Following kings’ orders, the Chinese kept the secret of making silk for centuries.
During the Han Dynasty, the brave officer Zhang Qian travelled west as far as Central Asia and brought silk there. As years passed by, silk became so important that the trade road from Europe to China got its name — the Silk Road.
The Silk Road became a busy highway for traders. From China, people sold silk and tea. In return, they received treasures such as spices (香料), gold and silver from the West. At first, it was mainly about trade; then people began to share ideas, technologies and cultures.
Most importantly, the Silk Road helped different cultures learn from each other. Art, music and even language were shared along this ancient road. In places like the Dunhuang Grottoes (敦煌石窟) in China, you can see how art pieces combined (融合) Eastern and Western styles into something distinctive. It can not be seen anywhere else.
The story of the Silk Road tells us how people from faraway lands could become friends through trade and shared ideas. Now, the trip takes only two minutes. The bridge will help people travel more easily, connect cities, and lower costs for businesses.
The bridge also offers fun activities for visitors. A high-speed glass lift can take people up 800 meters to a coffee shop in the clouds. The shop owner says that looking down at the mountains while drinking coffee “feels like drinking with nature”. Brave visitors can also try bungee jumping (蹦极) or walk along a glass walkway.
Building of the bridge started in January 2022 and took more than three and a half years. The bridge weighs about 22, 000 tons. To make sure it was safe, engineers carried out a five-day test in August. A team drove 18, then 48, and finally 96 heavy trucks onto different parts of the bridge.
Guizhou has about 40 million people. In recent years, the province has built many bridges to help people travel and reduce poverty (贫困) . Now it has over 32, 000 bridges, compared with only 2, 900 in the 1980s. It is also home to the world’s second-highest bridge, the Duge Bridge, which opened in 2016.

What color is the sun? That sounds like a pretty easy question, doesn’t it? Many people would say “yellow” right away. But, actually, the sun gives off light in all the colors of the rainbow. But it looks yellow to us here on Earth. ▲
First, we need to understand how we see colors. Humans have three types of cone cells (视锥细胞) in our eyes, known as L, M and S. They help us see long wavelengths (波长) (toward the red end), medium wavelengths (yellow and green) and short wavelengths (blue). When light reaches these cells, they send messages to the brain. The brain uses the messages to decide what color we see. If all three cells send equally (均等地) strong messages, we see white light. That’s what happens with sunlight.
Astronauts in space see the sun as white, but when sunlight hits Earth’s atmosphere (大气), things start to change. Shorter light waves like blue spread out easily. The longer waves of red, yellow and orange reach our eyes more easily. Imagine sunlight as a group of colorful balls flying through the sky. When they hit the atmosphere, the blue ones go in diverse directions. They bounce (反射) and spread to every part of the sky above us. That’s why we see the sky as blue. At the same time, red and yellow ones go straight through the air and reach our eyes. This explains why the sun looks red, orange or yellow, depending on the time of day.
Now you see why the question in the beginning isn’t as simple as it seems. But to all of us on Earth, the sun will always look like a shining golden ball.

重难语篇练习
Nowadays, the Earth is facing more and more serious environmental problems because of human activities. With the rapid development of industry and transportation, more people drive private cars, burn fossil fuels (化石燃料) every day, and cut down large areas of forests for land and wood. As a result, the air is becoming heavily polluted, and the global temperature keeps rising year by year. Many rivers and lakes are polluted by waste water from factories, so we can hardly see clean water or healthy fish in them. What is worse, plenty of wild animals are losing their living areas and food resources (资源), putting many types of animals in great danger of dying out.
Nature is very important for all human beings. It provides us with fresh air, clean water, rich resources and a comfortable environment. Trees can take in harmful gases and produce oxygen, making the air fresher and healthier. They can also stop the soil from being washed away and cool the temperature around us. Animals and plants play an important role in keeping the balance of nature, so protecting them is protecting ourselves.
It is our duty to protect the Earth. We can take small but clear action in our daily life. We can save water by turning off taps while brushing teeth and reusing waste water to clean the floor. We can save electricity by turning off lights, fans and TVs when leaving rooms. We should use cloth bags instead of plastic ones while shopping. We can choose to walk, ride bikes or take buses instead of driving cars. We can also sort rubbish into different groups and pick up litter in the street. What’s more, we can plant trees and flowers every year and ask more people to join in environmental protection.
If everyone takes simple but helpful action, our Earth will become greener, safer and more beautiful for all living things in the near future.

Cherries are one of China’s favorite fruits. This winter, you can see them in almost every fruit shop. Most of these dark red, juicy fruits come from Chile by ship. The trip takes about 30 days. Have you ever wondered how they stay fresh for so long?
The secret is a technology called Controlled Atmosphere (CA). Fruits and vegetables still “breathe” after they are picked. In a normal place, they react with the air, which makes them go bad faster. Microorganisms (微生物) in the air also make them spoil* more quickly.
But CA technology creates a safer place for fruits and vegetables. It reduces the oxygen (O2) level in the storage** area. This slows down the fruits’ activities. At the same time, it adds more carbon dioxide (CO2), and sometimes a little nitrogen (N2). The temperature and humidity*** are also changed to “put the fruits to sleep”. But how did this technology develop over time? The idea of CA technology is not new. It started in the 1800s. In the 1920s, Franklin Kidd and Cyril West from Cambridge University studied how fruits breathe. This led to the first apple storage using “gas storage” in 1929. Later, Robert Smock from Cornell University made the technology better. He wanted to make local apples last longer, and his work helped McIntosh apples stay fresh until spring.
Today, CA technology is used in many ways. It helps keep products fresh in cold storage places, food packaging and even the flower industry. It makes sure that fruits, food and flowers stay fresh for a long time, even after traveling far.

From lunch boxes and drinking bottles to furniture and clothes, plastic is used to make lots of everyday things. When these things are thrown away, some of them end up in the sea. The plastic takes hundreds of years to break down. Biodegradable (可生物降解的) plastics were invented to deal with this problem.
Biodegradable plastics can break down naturally, but the new problem is that they can not break down completely in the sea. Instead, they break down into very small pieces called microplastics, which are often eaten by fish, birds and other animals. The microplastics are known to be harmful.
Recently, scientists have invented a new kind of plastic which could help solve this micro plastic problem. Unlike other biodegradable plastics, the new plastic fully dissolves (溶解) in salty seawater. When the new plastic dissolves, it breaks up into the separate substances (物质). And then small living things in seawater can break them down completely. Studies have shown that the plastic can break down in a few hours in seawater, and in around 10 days in soil.
The new plastic has other advantages, too. It is not poisonous. When it is burned, the gas it produces won’t pollute the environment. The plastic can be made hard or shaped into different forms at temperatures above 120℃, so it could be used to make various kinds of things. Takuzo Aida, who led the research, said the new plastic is “strong and recyclable”, and can be used in lots of ways, for example, in replacing single-use plastics. An expert called the idea “a promising (有前景的) product to deal with sea pollution”.
1.Which of the following is TRUE about biodegradable plastics?
A.They are unable to break down naturally.
B.It takes hundreds of years for them to break down.
C.They can break down completely in the sea.
D.They produce microplastics that harm animals.
2.How does the passage show the advantages (优点) of the new kind of plastic?
①By telling stories. ②By raising questions. ③By giving facts. ④By offering opinions.
A.①③ B.①② C.③④ D.②④
3.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To tell the value of plastic. B.To show the plastic products.
C.To introduce a new kind of plastic. D.To explain the problems of plastic.

1.What is special about the Dipteryx oleifera tree?
A.It grows better after being hit by lightning. B.It dies quickly after lightning hits.
C.It avoids lightning by hiding under other trees. D.It takes in nutrients directly from lightning.
2.The underlined word “handle” means “_________” in the passage.
A.give away B.give out C.deal with D.suffer from
3.Why do some trees attract lightning on purpose?
A.To get more space. B.To grow stronger and taller.
C.To kill nearby trees for growth. D.To protect other trees around them.
4.What might scientists do next according to the passage?
A.Do more studies about Dipteryx oleifera trees. B.Look for more trees that can survive lightning.
C.Study how trees attract lightning better. D.Plant more Dipteryx oleifera trees.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.C 4.B

1.How does the writer begin the text?
A.By asking a question. B.By telling a story.
C.By listing some numbers. D.By showing a picture.
2.Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ”?
A.Why is that?
B.How far is the sun from us?

Shadow puppetry is one of the oldest and most amazing traditional arts in China. It has a history of more than 2,000 years, starting from the Western Han Dynasty. Before television and films appeared, shadow puppetry was the main form of entertainment (娱乐) for many Chinese people.
The puppets are usually made of cowhide (牛皮) or sheepskin (羊皮). Skilled artists cut the leather into different shapes and paint them with bright colors. Each puppet has special joints so that its head, arms and legs can move freely. During a show, performers stand behind a white cloth screen.

Mini dictionary

storage** /’stɔːrɪdʒ/ n. the act of keeping things (like food, clothes, or toys) in a place when you don’t use them right now: Our house has a small storage room for old toys and books.
humidity*** /hjuː’mɪdəti/ n. the amount of water in the air: After a hot shower, the humidity in the bathroom is very high.
1.What will you most probably do if you plan to design a storage system for fresh flowers using CA technology?
A.Add more O2 to help the flowers breathe better.
