China is taking big steps to help people stay healthy. The government recently announced it will open more special “weight clinics (门诊)” in hospitals. These clinics use doctors, food experts, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to help people lose weight safely.
At a press meeting in Beijing, Lei Haichao from the National Health Commission (NHC) said the plan is part of a new health-first strategy. The news quickly gained popularity online. Many people shared funny posts and drew cartoons about exercising and eating healthily.
But why does weight matter so much? The truth is, over half of Chinese adults are now overweight. If nothing changes, this number could rise to 70% by 2030. Being overweight can lead to serious health problems like diabetes (糖尿病).
To address this growing problem, China started a three-year “weight management” campaign in June 2024. Weight clinics are a key part of this plan. Besides clinics, many cities also take the responsibility and build millions of sports parks and walking paths for citizens. As a result, more Chinese people are exercising outdoors.
Food habits are changing too. New dietary guides suggest healthy meals for different cities, such as steamed fish with millet rice and vegetables in central China, and fresh seafood with vegetables in the south. People are abandoning foods with much sugar and oil. Office workers prefer salad with chicken or fish. Even holiday snacks like mooncakes are now smaller and healthier. Doctors mix old Chinese recipes with modern science. For example, Shaanxi noodles now have more vegetables and tofu.
Keeping healthy isn’t just about weight but eating well, moving more, and feeling happy. With all these methods mentioned above, China hopes to build a healthier future for everyone.
19. What do weight clinics use to help people lose weight safely?
A. Sports parks and walking paths. B. Online funny posts and cartoons.
C. Doctors, food experts and TCM. D. Traditional Chinese medicine alone.
20. What does the underlined word “abandoning” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Giving up. B. Cooking carefully. C. Buying more. D. Putting away.
21. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Popular Sports in Modern Cities. B. Ways of Forming Healthy Eating Habits.
C. The Importance of Weight Clinics. D. China’s Efforts to Fight Against Overweight.
【答案】19. C 20. A 21. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了中国为应对超重问题推出的一系列健康举措,包括开设“weight clinics”、建设运动场地、推广健康饮食方案等,旨在帮助民众保持健康。
【19题详解】
第一段指出“These clinics use doctors, food experts, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to help people lose weight safely.”,直接说明体重门诊借助医生、食品专家和传统中医来帮助人们安全减重,因此选项C符合原文信息。
【20题详解】
第五段提到“People are abandoning foods with much sugar and oil.”,结合上下文“Office workers prefer salad with chicken or fish. Even holiday snacks like mooncakes are now smaller and healthier”,可以看出人们正在减少高糖高油食物的摄入,因此abandoning译为“放弃”,与选项“Giving up”意思一致。
【21题详解】
全文围绕中国应对超重问题的举措展开,包括开设体重门诊、建设运动场地、推广健康饮食等,因此最佳标题为选项D。
C
Have you ever imagined a garbage burning factory does not have enough rubbish to burn? In some cities, this is becoming true.
In the past, people made too much rubbish. Cities built waste-to-energy factories to burn rubbish and make electricity. But now, some burners get less daily household waste. They are becoming “hungry”. This is actually good news for us.
Why does this happen? Because waste recycling works well today. People sort their rubbish carefully: kitchen waste can be made into fertilizer (肥料), while plastic, paper, glass and metal can be used again. There is less leftover rubbish to burn. Besides, people learn to cut down waste and reuse things in daily life.
Even so, waste-to-energy factories are still useful. Here is how they work:
*Arriving: Trucks put rubbish into a big storage area. A machine mixes it up.
*Reacting: Then the rubbish goes into a hot oven with a temperature over 850°C. This is where ___22___ happens! Heat causes a burning reaction here. Natural waste such as food, paper and wood reacts with oxygen (O2), breaking down to give off heat, carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O).
The high-pressure vapor makes a machine called a turbine (涡轮) run fast. The fast-moving turbine is connected to another machine to make electricity.
*Cleaning the smoke: Before smoke goes into the air, cleaners make it clean. About 90% of the waste at the beginning is gone. The ash (灰) left can be used for building houses, and metal in the ash can be collected and recycled again.
Good points: It cuts down waste greatly, saves ground space for rubbish, makes electricity and collects metal for reuse.
Bad points: Burning rubbish still makes CO2 gas. What’s more, people may think burning can solve all problems and forget to reduce and reuse waste first.
Right recycling is the most useful way to protect our home. The future will be a greener world where nothing goes to waste.
22. What can people do with kitchen waste according to the passage?
A. It can be made into fertilizer. B. It can be sold for money.
C. It can be used to clean water. D. It can be kept in storage forever.
23. Which word can be put in the ______?
A. physics B. chemistry C. biology D. engineering
24. Why are the good and bad points included in the passage?
A. To tell readers what to do at home. B. To show the writer’s personal feelings.
C. To make the passage easier to understand. D. To give a balanced and complete opinion.
25. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To teach students how to separate rubbish.
B. To explain how a turbine works to make electricity.
C. To introduce garbage factories and ways to deal with waste.
D. To advise the government to build rubbish-burning factories.
【答案】22. A 23. B 24. D 25. C

【22题详解】
第三段明确指出:“kitchen waste can be made into fertilizer”,说明厨余垃圾可以被制成肥料。
【23题详解】
空格后紧接着描述了“Heat causes a burning reaction here.

“The hound (猎狗)!” Holmes cried suddenly. “Come, Watson! Come!”
We ran quickly across the dark wild land. A final, scary scream broke the quiet, and then came a dull, heavy sound. The night fell deathly silent. Holmes pressed his hands to his forehead and stamped his feet in frustration.
“We are too late,” he said in a low voice, angrily.
Suddenly, we heard a low moan (呻吟). A man was lying on the rocks. As we walked closer, we saw the dead body of Sir Henry Baskerville. He was wearing his brown tweed suit. “Oh no!” I cried out, feeling my blood run cold. Holmes bent down quickly beside the body, and then suddenly he began laughing. “A beard!” he said. “This isn’t Sir Henry—it’s Selden, the escaped prisoner!”
The truth hit me at once. Sir Henry had given his old clothes to Barrymore, who had secretly passed them to Selden. “The suit killed him,” Holmes said quietly. “Someone gave the hound Sir Henry’s scent—probably the stolen boot from the London hotel—and it hunted the wrong man.”
Suddenly, we saw someone walking towards us. It was Stapleton. Holmes whispered: “Don’t let him know you suspect him.”
“Dr. Watson!” Stapleton asked, in surprise. “What brings you out here at this hour? I heard a strange noise and came to check on Sir Henry.” He saw the body and froze. “Is that him?”
“It’s Selden,” I said. “He’s dead.”
Stapleton tried to overcome his amazement and disappointment, “Terrible,” he murmured. “I feared the worst for Sir Henry.”
“Sir Henry is safe,” Holmes said coldly. Stapleton then recognized him and smiled nervously. “Mr. Holmes! I didn’t know you were here. Can you solve the mystery of the Hound of the Baskervilles?”
Holmes shrugged. “We cannot solve every mystery. Anyway, I’ll return to London tomorrow.”
With that, we left for Baskerville Hall, leaving Stapleton to walk home alone. Poor Selden lay still on the rocks.
—Adapted from The Hound of the Baskervilles

April 8 marks International Rare Animal Protection Day. What do you know about animal protection work? Is it only about caring for cute animals?
For 38-year-old Huang Hongxiang, who has been protecting wildlife for 13years, that’s a common misunderstanding of many people.
“Human activities are the main reason why animals are endangered (濒危的), like illegal (非法的) hunting and destroying too much of nature,” Huang said. “So wildlife protection is more about dealing with humans, not animals.”
Huang’s main work includes exposing illegal trade and smuggling (走私). He has worked in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. Now, he and his team are working to stop underground shops that sell pangolins (穿山甲) in Laos.
“Though we have made many efforts, pangolin smuggling in Laos still goes on,” Huang said. “But just feeling disappointed does not help. We need to keep looking for solutions.”
By reporting the illegal trade of pangolins to the local officials, Huang’s team has saved many pangolins. They also used social media to raise awareness of pangolin smuggling in Laos, putting pressure on local governments to take stronger action. As Huang said, “Wild animal protection is a process of gradual progress.”
Besides fieldwork, Huang also organizes study programs for teenagers to learn more about wildlife protection.
“I want young people to understand that wildlife protection needs professional skills. It’s not easy or romantic,” Huang said. “If they understand the challenges early, they can be more determined and will grow up to truly help the world.”

D
