On January 19, 2026, six Chinese students made a new paper plane world record. The old record was 88.318 meters. It was set by an American team. The Chinese students threw a paper plane 98.43 meters. They broke the old record that stood for 40 years. The new record is over 10 meters longer, almost reaching 100 meters.
The team tried a new design. They didn’t use the usual style. Instead, they made a “high-speed gliding” (高速滑翔) plane called “Research”. It flies steadily (稳定地) and fast. The throwing speed is over 130 kilometers per hour. It is almost as fast as a baseball player’s throw.
They also made the plane very carefully. They used 3D-printed (3D打印的) clear boards to protect the paper from changing shape when moving in the sky. This helped it face less air resistance so that the paper plane could fly farther and faster. Here are the four key members of this team.
• Liu Liwen (19, college student): He designed the plane and threw it. He studied the data (数据) of the past 40 years and found a rule: the record rises about 10 meters each 10 years.
• Tang Shuai (18, technical school student) : He was good at folding. He made a special tool to make the paper plane fly steadily.
• Yang Shi’an (19, college student): He is the team leader. He started a group to bring paper plane lovers together.
• Huang Yizhou (15, Grade 9 student): He improved the paper plane and fixed it during the stage.
Paper planes are easy to make but can show great skills. Making them requires knowing how air works and how to throw well. Their team wants to make it an international sport, changing people’s old ideas.

Once upon a time, there lived a little tree in the forest. He was young and proud. He always stood straight, never bowed to anything, so he didn’t like strong winds. He thought whenever the wind blew, he would fight against it with all his strength. Near him stood a tall, wise old tree. It lived through hundreds of storms.
One day, a big storm came. The winds blew very hard. Many tall trees around them refused to bend (弯曲). They stood straight and fought against the wind with all their strength. But the storm was too powerful. One by one, their trunks and branches broke badly.
When the storm just began, the little tree was scared. He still decided to stand and fight against the wind. But the old tree said, “Little tree, don’t fight against the wind blindly! Bend softly, don’t resist (抵抗)!”
After he took the old tree’s advice, he wasn’t scared any more and kept calm. The little tree relaxed his trunk and branches to swing slowly with the wind. He didn’t break or fall.
When the storm finally passed, he stood up straight again, unharmed. He asked the old tree politely, “Why did I survive?” The old tree smiled and said, “True strength means being strong in the heart and flexible (灵活的) outside. It is a wise way to face life’s challenges. That is how we stay safe and grow stronger.” The little tree felt thankful to the old tree.
From that day on, the little tree stood straight in the sunshine and bent wisely in the wind. He grew taller and thicker every year.

China’s New Miracle Bridge: Reaching New Heights
The Huajiang Canyon Bridge was opened to traffic on September 28, 2025. The new bridge is located in Guizhou Province. It has set two world records! It is now the world’s highest and longest bridge in the mountains. This great bridge is 625 meters high from the bridge to the river below. It is 1420meters long between its two main towers. It took workers only three years and eight months to build it.
Building the bridge was a huge challenge. Workers had to fight against strong winds, because they worked high up in the mountains. They used smart technology to put the bridge parts together perfectly. Under the bridge, there were many caves (洞穴) on the ground. Engineers used special tools and a smart filling system to solve this problem.
The bridge is much more than just a road. It reduces the travel time for local people. The trip used to take two hours, but now it takes only two minutes! This is bringing new life to nearby villages. So more people return home to open hotels and restaurants.
The bridge is not just for traffic. It is also a place for fun. It has the world’s highest bungee jump (蹦极). People can walk on a glass path and enjoy a drink in a café high in the clouds. Soon, there will be a museum in one tower. The bridge is also smart because it has special sensors (传感器) to check if it is safe.
The Huajiang Canyon Bridge shows how technology can improve lives and connect people with nature. It is a symbol of China’s building skill reaching new heights—both in how high it stands and in how it helps local communities.

根据下文“For most climbers, bottled oxygen is a must. But Bargiel gave it up.”和后文的“And he skied all the way down to the camp.”

21. How long is the new paper plane record?
A. 88.318 meters. B. 98.43 meters. C. 100 meters. D. 110 meters.

Do you know the “lost city”—Atlantis? Some people say it was an ancient civilization that disappeared into the sea. ____26____ And perhaps they still live here (“mer” is the French word for “ocean”). Do you think Atlantis is a real place? Do you think it still remains on the ocean floor somewhere?
Many people now believe that there is a place on Earth that has the connection with the famous story of Atlantis. It is a small island called Santorini (圣托里尼).
Santorini is an island of wonderful beauty. ____27____ At the other end of the island, it becomes very tall and has high, sharp cliffs. When you stand on the high places and look out, you can see another smaller island. This island’s unusual shape is special because the island had a huge volcano (火山) on it. ____28____
Experts have found something meaningful from an ancient town on Santorini. Every year, thousands of tourists come here to see the old culture. There are many walls and steps of ancient buildings. ____29____ Maybe these things are signs of Atlantis. They remind us that people lived on this lovely island many years ago.
____30____ But one thing is sure: this beautiful island has a long and amazing history. It tells us that the past is always full of stories. And we can still learn a lot from them today.
A. It has lovely beaches at one end.
B. But what do you know about Atlantis?
C. If you go there, you can enjoy them by yourself.
D. It broke the island into many parts when it broke out.
E. No one knows for sure if Santorini is the real Atlantis.
F. Others say it was a place where real-life “merpeople” lived.
