Ability Objectives Improve reading skills: skimming and scanning. Express personal opinions about “genius” in simple English. 3. Emotional Objectives Learn from Beethoven’s good qualities: diligent, persistent, optimistic. Encourage students to face difficulties bravely and never give up. II. Key and Difficult Points Key points: Text comprehension; reading skills; key words and phrases. Difficult points: Use the words and stories to express ideas about genius. III. Teaching Methods Task-based Language Teaching/Situational Teaching /Group Work/Multi-media Teaching IV. Teaching Procedures Step1. Lead-in (3 mins) Show a picture of Beethoven. Then play a short part of Beethoven’s Symphony No.9. Ask:Who is he? What do you know about him? Step2. Pre-reading (5 mins) Learn new words and phrases with pictures and examples. Predict: What is the passage about? What problem did Beethoven have? Step 3 While-reading (22 mins) Task 1. Skimming (6 mins) Ask students to read quickly and match the main idea of each paragraph. Beethoven is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of music. Inspired by his struggles with deafness, he composed some amazing pieces. He proceeded with the composition until his death, writing more than 130 musical works. In February 1824, Beethoven's ninth symphony was finally completed, and he proudly signed his name at the bottom of the page. Before the performance, Beethoven felt that the performance would be a disaster . The audience applauded loudly when he walked onto the stage. Beethoven together with Michael Umlauf took charge of the orchestra and the performance proved to be a success .
