Kristina Ulmer, a high school English teacher in Pennsylvania, lost her only sister, Katie, in a car crash in 2014, just a month before Katie’s 30th birthday. When collecting Katie’s belongings, Ulmer found about $100 in waitressing tips in her wallet. Knowing Katie was always kind and cared for those in need — she’d volunteered at food banks, raised money for charity and trained to be an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) — Ulmer wanted to use the money for something meaningful, but she couldn’t find the right way for years.
In 2018, while teaching her 9th-grade students, Ulmer had an idea. She added her own money to the 100, turning it into 20 bills for each student, and launched a kindness challenge: use the money to do one act of kindness. She told the students the project was in honor of her sister, hoping they’d understand the importance of human connection.
What started as a one-time activity soon grew. Strangers donated money after hearing about it, letting Ulmer run the challenge twice a year. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, she mailed or dropped off $20 to students so they could keep helping others from a distance. Students have done all kinds of good deeds: donating to women’s shelters, helping the homeless, decorating a neighbor’s porch (门廊) and making useful items for the elderly and sick. Some even pooled their money for bigger projects.
To date, 425 of Ulmer’s students have joined the challenge. Ulmer has also set up the $20 Kindness Challenge Foundation to support other teachers who want to start the project. She believes her sister is behind the project’s success and that Katie would be incredibly proud of how her small act of kindness has inspired so many others.

C.She left her sister a big sum of money. D.She was passionate about helping others.
5.Why are Ulmer’s actions during the pandemic mentioned?
A.To explain why the challenge started. B.To stress the consistency of her project.
C.To contrast with other teachers’ actions. D.To show financial generosity to students.
6.What do students’ deeds suggest about the project?
A.It encourages creative empathy. B.It remains a one-time activity.
C.It replaces formal volunteering. D.It rewards competitive giving.
7.What does the $20 symbolize in the story?
A.A standard donation amount. B.The amount Katie saved for charity.
C.The payment for students’ participation. D.A link between past and present kindness.

Science fiction stories have imagined future people living in underground cities on Mars, in asteroids, and in space stations far from the sun. But if humans are ever to survive in any of those tough environments, they will need ways to grow food using limited resources-and photosynthesis (光合作用), the wildly successful yet energy-inefficient process by which plants turn sunlight into sugar, might not cut it.
Now, some scientists are wondering whether it’s possible to produce food more efficiently by skipping photosynthesis altogether, and growing plants in the dark.
The idea sounds as science fictional as cities on Mars. But a team of researchers has taken a first step toward realizing it with a study published in Nature Food in June. The research shows it is possible to grow algae (藻类), edible yeast (食用酵母), and mushroom-producing fungi (真菌) in the dark by supplying them with a carbon-based chemical that didn’t originate from plants, but instead was manufactured using solar electricity. That is, this method replaced biological photosynthesis with a partly artificial process for turning sunlight into food. Their process is a version of artificial photosynthesis, a term that has been around for years and includes various approaches to transforming sunlight, water, and CO2 into liquid fuels and other chemicals.
The researchers say their work represents the first time an artificial photosynthesis system has been paired with an attempt to grow common food-producing organisms. The scientists are hopeful that this method could unlock new ways to produce food using less physical space and energy than traditional agriculture — including, perhaps, crops that can grow in the dark.
While other experts are skeptical that it will ever be possible to redesign plant biology so thoroughly, they are excited by the technology the researchers have invented and the team’s out-of-the-box idea about how to make food production more efficient.
Lynn Rothschild, a senior research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center, says it’s worth keeping an open mind about how any efforts to redesign a fundamental biological process like photosynthesis could be applied, in space or on Earth: “The payoff may be something we haven’t imagined yet.”
8.How could scientists grow algae in the dark according to the text?
A.By giving them a chemical from plants. B.By giving them a chemical produced by solar electricity.
C.By giving them physical space and energy. D.By giving them crops that grow in the dark.
9.Which of the following best describes artificial photosynthesis”?
A.It uses sunlight, water, and CO2 inefficiently. B.It has been very successful.
C.It helps to find new ways of producing food. D.The term has just been created.
10.What does the underlined word “out-of-the-box” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Taken out from the box. B.Usable immediately.
C.Mysterious. D.Very creative.
11.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.How to grow fungi in the dark? B.What is artificial photosynthesis?
C.Can food crops grow in the dark? D.How to turn sunlight into food?

Children with disorders of consciousness are fully dependent on caregivers for daily care such as hydration (补水), nutrition, washing and dressing. However, there is a shortage of tools to evaluate consciousness for children aged 2 to 18. Neurodevelopmental changes with age further complicate the assessment of children’s awareness.
To address this problem, researchers from Anglia Ruskin University. The Children’s Trust and Temple University have created the MuSICCA tool. It uses musical stimulation to help children demonstrate their level of consciousness. Specially selected music is performed live by a qualified music therapist, who adjusts the music based on the child’s responses to maximize their chance to show their abilities.
The therapist observes and records the child’s behaviour using standard scales, and MuSICCA then generates a diagnosis of their consciousness level.
In the study, researchers invited music therapists, families of brain-injured children and healthcare professionals to evaluate the tool. After demonstration and Q&A sessions, participants rated two statements about MuSICCA: whether it assesses consciousness, and whether it is suitable for children and young people. They also commented on its strengths and weaknesses.
All participants agreed with the two statements, with 85% strongly agreeing with each. Lead author Dr Jonathan Pool stated that children with consciousness disorders rely on others to interpret their subtle behaviour, and reliable assessment tools are urgently needed. MuSICCA enables rigorous assessment of responses to musical stimuli, clearly showing the child’s consciousness level and response patterns. The results are easy to share with care and medical teams and help families understand how to support their child’s recovery.
The study confirms that MuSICCA is a suitable and comprehensive assessment method, with advantages for providing guidance, engaging caregivers and assisting clinical teams.
12.What problem are children with disorders of consciousness faced with?
A.They need help with daily care.
B.They cannot get proper medical treatment.
C.Their consciousness is hard to assess.
D.Their development is affected by age.
13.How does the MuSICCA tool work?
A.It asks children to make music.
B.It uses pre-recorded music to test children.
C.It depends on parents to report behaviour.
D.It changes music based on a child’s reactions.
14.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.Who was invited to take part.
B.How the evaluation was conducted.
C.Why different experts were needed.
D.What opinions participants held.
15.What does Dr Jonathan Pool’s statement suggest about MuSICCA?
A.It aids children’s treatment and healing.
B.All participants agreed it was effective.
C.It can replace caregivers’ observations.
D.Caregivers need to learn how to use it.

On an ordinary morning, Diane was taking her usual walk along a beach in Tasmania when something unusual caught her eye in the surf — a bottle rolling in on the waves. Curious, she picked it up and discovered a note inside. To her surprise, the message was written in Spanish. Determined to figure out what it said, Diane sought help from locals, including her brother, who had just returned from Chile with a Spanish dictionary. Word by word, they struggled to piece together a rough translation: “Life has taught me that anything is possible.”
But the most important clues were easy to spot: a name, a Colombian address and an email. Those details led Diane to Erika, a woman from Colombia, who had been working on a cruise ship years earlier. One evening, bored and looking for something fun to do, Erika wrote a note, sealed it in an empty bottle, and threw it overboard. She had imagined it reaching someone, though the possibility felt impossibly small. As life grew busy — work, family, the endless routines of daily life — she rarely checked that old email account. Yet on quiet evenings, she sometimes caught herself wondering: had anyone ever found that bottle? She once mentioned to her family that if someone did, she would love to meet them — maybe even walk together on the very beach where it landed.
Diane stared at the faded ink on the note, wondering who this stranger was and how her message had traveled so far. She decided to send an email to the address, sharing the story of finding the bottle and expressing her curiosity.
Days turned into weeks, then months. No reply ever came. Each time she opened her inbox, her hope faded a little more. Had the address changed? Had Erika ever received it? Diane placed the bottle on her shelf, a quiet reminder of the mystery that might never be solved.

B.A newspaper’s weekly book review column.
C.A public library’s summer program brochure.
D.An academic journal on adolescent development.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.C
【导语】文章主要介绍了年度青少年阅读冒险活动的内容、参与方式及奖励机制。
1.细节理解题。根据How to Get Started部分中的“1. Enroll: Registration opens June 1, 2026. Sign up in person at any participating public library or submit a registration form by mail. You will receive a personal reading log packet.(第一步:注册:2026年6月1日开始注册。可亲自到任何参与活动的公共图书馆报名,或邮寄报名表。您将收到一份个人阅读日志包)”可知,青少年加入这个阅读冒险活动的第一步是注册报名。
2.推理判断题。根据Reward Levels部分中的“● 300 Points: Qualify for the Grand Prize Drawing, featuring top-tier rewards like premium headphones or a digital art tablet.(300分:有资格参加大奖抽奖,奖品包括顶级耳机或数字艺术平板电脑等)”以及标题下第一段提到的“Any adventurer with one goal accomplished will be granted 100 points.(任何完成一个目标的冒险者都将获得100分)”可知,要获得大奖抽奖资格,需要积累300分,这意味着需要完成多个任务,最合理的推断是完成所有三个任务目标(每个目标100分,共300分)。因此,A选项“Students who achieve all three quest goals.(完成所有三个任务目标的学生)”描述的人最后可能获得大奖抽奖资格。
3.推理判断题。文章整体介绍了年度青少年阅读冒险活动的详细信息,包括如何参与、任务选择、奖励机制等,且文中多次提到“library(图书馆)”,如How to Get Started:部分第一点中“Sign up in person at any participating public library(可亲自到任何参与活动的公共图书馆报名)”和最后一段“Pick up your registration form at any library branch today!(今天就到任何图书馆分馆领取报名表吧!)”。由此可推断,这篇文章最可能出自公共图书馆的夏季活动宣传册。

【答案】范文
Then one day, an unexpected email arrived. It was from Erika, whose tone was filled with shock and joy. She explained that she had accidentally logged into her old email account while helping her daughter set up a new one and found Diane’s message. She wrote vividly about the night she threw the bottle, recalling the sea breeze and her faint hope. Erika expressed her eagerness to meet Diane, saying she never thought the bottle would travel across the ocean and connect two strangers. They exchanged messages frequently, sharing their lives and growing closer day by day.
The big day they had long imagined finally came. Erika flew to Tasmania, and Diane picked her up at the airport. The moment they saw each other, they hugged warmly, as if they had known each other for years. Walking along the shore, with the waves gently hitting their feet, they talked about the bottle’s long journey and how it brought them together. Their unexpected friendship, born from a bottle thrown into the sea, became a beautiful memory they would cherish forever.
