Last month, I had a special experience. An exchange student named Tom from the UK came to stay with my family. Tom had never been to China before, and everything was new to him.
One rainy Saturday, my mom suggested making dumplings. Tom looked confused because he had only seen dumplings in Chinese restaurants, usually boiled or fried. He didn’t know that Chinese families make them by hand.
At first, Tom was clumsy (笨拙的). He made the dough (面团) too thick, and the filling (馅) kept falling out. My father laughed kindly and showed him how to press the edges together properly. Slowly, Tom started to get the hang of it. He even made a dumpling in the shape of a flower!
When the dumplings were finally cooked, Tom ate a big bowl of them. “This is amazing,” he said. “In my country, we buy ready-made food from supermarkets. Making food together like this makes me feel warm inside.”
That night, I realized that food is not just about eating. It is a bridge that connects different cultures. Even though we speak different languages, sharing a meal brought us closer.
21.Why did Tom look confused when the writer's mother suggested making dumplings?
A. Because he didn't like eating dumplings.
B. Because he didn't know how to make them by hand.
C. Because he was tired and wanted to sleep.
D. Because he didn't like the writer's mother.
22.What does the underlined phrase “get the hang of it” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Give up doing something.
B. Understand how to do something.
C. Make a mistake.
D. Feel bored.
23. What is the main difference between Tom's eating habit and the writer's family habit?
A. Tom likes eating out, while the writer's family likes cooking at home.
B. Tom eats cold food, while the writer's family eats hot food.
C. Tom usually buys ready-made food, while the writer's family makes food by hand.
D. Tom doesn't eat dumplings.
24.How did Tom feel about making dumplings with the family by the end of the day? A. He felt it was a waste of time.
B. He felt warm and connected to the family.
C. He was angry about making mistakes.
D. He missed his own home and wanted to leave.
25.What is the best title for this passage?
A. How to Make Dumplings B. A Rainy Saturday
C. Food as a Cultural Bridge D. An Exchange Student’s Life
The Cost of “Fast Fashion”
Do you love buying new clothes? Today, many popular clothes brands produce new styles every two weeks. This is called “fast fashion”. It encourages people to buy more and throw away old clothes quickly. While these clothes are cheap and look good, they come with a hidden cost to the environment.
The Environmental Impact
Producing one cotton T-shirt requires about 2,700 liters of water—enough for one person to drink for 2.5 years! Furthermore, when we throw away clothes, most of them end up in landfills Synthetic fibers (合成纤维) like polyester (聚酯纤维) can take up to 200 years to break down. During this time, they release harmful chemicals into the soil and water.
The Human Cost
Many fast fashion clothes are made in developing countries where workers are paid very little and work in unsafe conditions.
What Can We Do?
Experts suggest changing our habits. Instead of buying five cheap T-shirts, buy one high-quality shirt that will last longer. You can also organize clothing swaps (交换) with friends or donate old clothes to charity. By choosing sustainable (可持续的) fashion, we can protect both the planet and the people on it.
26.What is “fast fashion” according to the passage?
A. Clothes that run very fast.
B. Clothes that are produced quickly and cheaply in new styles.
C. Expensive clothes made by famous designers.
D. Old clothes that are sold in markets.
27.How much water is needed to produce one cotton T-shirt?
A. 200 liters. B. 2,700 liters. C. 27,000 liters. D. 250 liters.
28. What does the underlined word "break down" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. To decompose (分解) naturally. B. To break into pieces physically.
C. To stop working (for machines). D. To become more expensive.
29.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a problem of fast fashion?
A. It wastes a lot of water.
B. It creates a lot of waste in landfills.
C. It makes clothes too expensive for poor people.
D. It may harm the health of factory workers.
30.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To criticize (批评) people who buy cheap clothes.
B. To explain why fast fashion is popular.
C. To give advice on how to be a responsible (负责任的) shopper.
D. To advertise for high-quality clothing brands.

2. A
Her name is on the cover”(看!
3. A
解析:not…until…
5. A
解析:形容词修饰不定代词(something/anything/nothing)要后置。
解析:句型 find it + adj. + to do sth.,其中it是形式宾语,真正的宾语是后面的不定式to work it out。
9. B
故选B(银行在哪里)。
10.C
Who/whom指人,whose表所属。
11.B
故选 I don’t agree(我不同意)。
12.B
解析:prefer to do sth. Rather than do sth. = prefer doing sth. To doing sth. 根据题干中的rather than后面接的动词形式,这里选B(to stay; go)。
13.A
解析:Not only…but also… I后面用 am。
14.A
通常用 Never mind(没关系/别介意)或 It doesn’t matter。You’re welcome回答感谢;With pleasure回答请求。
解析:根据 “Each student can borrow 2 books at a time” 可知一次借2本。
解析:根据 “Items Not Allowed: Food, drinks…”
解析:根据 “If you need to talk, please go to the discussion room on the second floor” 可知想说话要去二楼讨论室。
解析:根据 “You can keep them for 2 weeks” 可知借阅时长为两周。
解析:文中提到 "Tom looked confused because he had only seen dumplings in Chinese restaurants... He didn't know that Chinese families make them by hand",说明他困惑是因为他只见过成品,不知道需要手工制作。
解析:前文说他很笨拙,后文说 "Slowly"(慢慢地)以及 "He even made a dumpling in the shape of a flower"(他甚至做了花形饺子),说明他学会了技巧。get the hang of it = 掌握窍门/学会怎么做。
解析:Tom说 "In my country... we buy ready-made food... Making food together like this...",对比作者家里的手工制作,选C。
解析:Tom说 "Making food together like this makes me feel warm inside" 以及最后一段提到 "brought us closer",说明他感到温暖和被接纳。
解析:文章最后一句点题 "food is not just about eating. It is a bridge that connects different cultures",故选C(食物作为文化的桥梁)。
解析:直接定位第二段 “Producing one cotton T-shirt requires about 2,700 liters of water”。
解析:语境是 “Synthetic fibers… take up to 200 years to break down”(合成纤维需要200年才能……),在环保语境下,指的是在自然界中“分解”。
解析:A(费水)、B(垃圾填埋)、D(工人健康)文中都提到了。
解析:最后一段开头 “What Can We Do?”
Dear Jack,
How was your May Day holiday? I had a really meaningful time this year, so I can’t wait to share my experiences with you.
During the five-day holiday, I helped my parents do lots of housework. I cleaned our rooms thoroughly and even learned to cook tomato and egg noodles with my mom’s help — it tasted more delicious than I expected! On May 2nd, I joined my neighbors to volunteer in our community. We picked up litter in the green belt and planted 10 small trees together.
This holiday let me understand how tired my parents are from doing chores every day, and I felt a strong sense of achievement from doing useful work. I think labor really makes people happy! Did you do anything special during your holiday? Write back soon!
Yours,
Li Hua
