A criminal escaped from San Quentin Prison. One night White Fang heard a stranger’s movements. The stranger stopped at the bottom of the stairs and listened. White Fang waited. The stranger started to go up the stairs. That was when White Fang struck. He gave no warning. He lifted his body into the air and landed on the stranger’s back. He held on to the man’s shoulders with his front paws and bit deep into the man’s neck. He pulled the man over backward and they crashed onto the floor. White Fang jumped free. The man tried to stand but White Fang was ready again with cutting fangs.
The family woke up. The noise downstairs sounded like a battle. There were gunshots. A man’s voice screamed in horror and pain. There was snarling, growling and the smashing and crashing of furniture and glass. It stopped after less than three minutes. The frightened family stood at the top of the stairs. Scott switched the lights on. He and his father went down the stairs with guns in their hands.
The guns were not needed. White Fang had done the work. The man’s body lay with an arm over the face. Scott moved the arm. “Jim Hall! The escaped prisoner!” said the Judge. Then they saw White Fang. His eyes were closed, but they opened a little when Scott came near. Scott patted him, and he growled a weak growl. “He’s finished,” said his master. “I don’t believe that,” said the Judge, and went to the telephone. “He has one chance in ten thousand,” said the surgeon after working on White Fang for an hour and a half. “He has a broken back leg and three broken ribs (肋骨). He’s lost nearly all his blood. And there are three bullet-holes (弹孔) right through him. He must be nursed like a sick child.”

When my sister Louisa and I attended Mr. Hawkins’ school, we had to walk through thick woods every day. There was no proper road, so our father marked trees with cuts to guide us. For most of the winter, we followed the trees safely, but one morning, everything changed.
That morning, a heavy snow began to fall. Mother stood at the door, and said worriedly, “John, the snow’s getting heavy. Maybe the children should stay home today.”
Dad shook his head. “A little snow never hurt anybody. When I was their age, I walked through worse. They’ll be just fine.” We left happily, but as we walked farther, the snow covered the marked trees, and we gradually (逐渐地) lost our way.
We decided to head north to follow a young man’s footprints. However, the snow kept falling harder, and the footprints became unclear. Louisa held my arm so hard. “Oliver, what if we never find the way?” Her voice was shaking. I tried to look brave. “I’ll get us out of here. Just stay close to me.” Inside, though, my heart was beating fast. Then a thought hit us: what if these weren’t a man’s footprints at all? What if they belonged to a bear? We couldn’t help crying, realizing we were truly lost.
But we knew a little about the woods—not much, but maybe enough. We calmed down and kept following the footprints. Finally, we walked into a clearing and saw a small house. We ran over and knocked. To our surprise, it was our neighbor Aunt Polly who opened the door.
When she heard our story, she laughed, “So you two brave ones were following my old cow Bessie! She’s smarter than she looks and brought you right to my door.” Aunt Polly took us in, warmed us up by the fire, and sent us home safely. It was a terrible but unforgettable day for Louisa and me.

It was morning when I awoke. In daylight, I was able to think more clearly.
I realized that running around and shouting would not help me find the machine. Someone knew where it was. I had to find that person. I also had to make friends with the little creatures. I wanted the tools and metal from them that I needed in case I had to make another machine. But I now felt there was no real hurry. There was plenty of food, and no one was trying to hurt me.
I felt dirty and needed to wash, but I could not find a stream or pool. I walked around the garden for a while. There were not many little creatures in the garden, and I spoke to them gently. They just laughed and ran away from me as if I were some kind of game. Then, I came to the tracks of my machine. There were marks on the ground where it landed. I saw my footprints and, more interestingly, other footprints. These were too big and narrow to be the little creatures. I thought perhaps they belonged to some kind of animal. There was also a large pedestal made of stone. I knocked on it. It sounded hollow. There were no handles or keyholes, but there were panels. I thought my machine was probably inside the pedestal, but I could not figure out how to get it out.
There were some little creatures nearby. I went up to them and pointed at the pedestal. They were horrified. They made me feel as if I were being rude to someone of great importance. They ran away, so I ran after them and caught one. I pulled it back to the pedestal. It was terrified and tried to get away. It was so afraid of the pedestal that I let it go.
I picked up a large stone and began hitting the pedestal with it. I thought I heard a laugh from inside. Something moved inside the pedestal.

In the US, in primary schools and high schools, students celebrate “spirit week” in late September. It is a week where we can refresh ourselves and get ready for the rest of the semester. We also call it “homecoming” week, because our families can come to visit our schools during this period.
There are a large number of funny activities held for Spirit week, such as dancing, kicking a ball and so on. However, I think the coolest activity in spirit week this year was the weird (奇特的) dress show. Spirit week provides a chance to dress up and show spirit.

Wednesday was the best day ever-clash day! Everyone wore clothes that . Some students wore one green sock and one red sock at the same time. I saw a student who on the top half was wearing a very formal white shirt and blue jacket but on the bottom half had tiger print pants.
Thursday was crazy hairdo day. I would never have imagined that someone would wear a very strange colorful wig (假发) to class, but that actually happened. I just wore a really small part of a pink wig on my head. I am not that crazy. Friday was a day for the school. We wore something with our school name on it.

In another corner of the room were a gas burner (煤气灶) and a fridge. Mrs Jones got up and walked there. She did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run now, nor did she watch her handbag, which she left behind on the sofa. But the boy was careful to sit on the far side of the room, away from the bag, where he thought she could easily see him out of the corner of her eye if she wanted to. He did not trust the woman to trust him. And he did not trust the woman not to trust him. And he didn’t want anyone to doubt him now.
“Do you need anyone to go to the store?” asked the boy, “maybe to get some milk or other things?”
“Don’t believe I do,” said the woman, “unless you just want sweet milk yourself. I’m going to make chocolate milk.”
“That will be fine,” said the boy.
Mrs Jones heated some cooked food she had in the fridge and set the table. She didn’t ask the boy anything about where he lived, or his parents, or anything else that would embarrass (使……尴尬) him. Instead, as they ate, she told him about her job in a hotel beauty shop that stayed open late, what the work was like, and how all kinds of women came in and out. Then she cut him half of her cake. “Eat some more, son,” she said.
When they finished eating, Mrs Jones got up and said, “Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede (软皮的) shoes. And, next time, do not make the mistake of stealing (偷) my bag nor anybody else’s — because shoes got in this way will burn your feet. I’ve got to get my rest now. But, son, I hope you will behave yourself from now on.”
The woman led the way down the hall to the front door and opened it. “Good night! Behave yourself, boy!” she said, looking into the street as he went down the steps.
The boy wanted to say something other than “Thank you, ma’am” to Mrs Jones, but although his mouth moved, he couldn’t even say that, as he turned at the front of the steps and looked up at the large woman in the door. Then Mrs Jones shut the door. And the boy never saw her again.

Nowadays, millions of Chinese leave the countryside to search for work in the cities. Among these is Zhong Wei, a 46-year-old husband and father. He has lived in Wenzhou for the last 13 years. With a hard job in a crayon factory, he doesn’t find much time to visit his hometown. “I used to return home at least once a year, but I haven’t been back for almost three years now. It’s a shame, but I just don’t have the time.” he says.
Many people like Zhong Wei regard with great interest how their hometowns have changed. Perhaps large hospitals and new roads have appeared. In many places, the government has also built new schools and sent teachers from the cities to help.
“I noticed that’s true of my hometown,” adds Zhong Wei. “Children have learned to read and count at my old primary school since the mid-20th century. But now the buildings are really old. I hear they’re going to build a new school there.” Zhong Wei thinks such developments are good, and he also knows that his hometown cannot always stay the same.
According to Zhong Wei, however, some things will never change. “In my hometown, there was a big old tree opposite the school. It is still there and has become quite a symbol of the place. Most of the children in my time liked to play together under that big tree, especially during the summer holidays. It was such a happy childhood. Saihanba is China’s largest man-made forest. It lies to the south of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (内蒙古自治区). Saihanba means “beautiful and high mountains”.
Around the 10th century, the rulers of the Liao Dynasty made it a royal (皇家的) hunting place because it was home to beautiful forests, green grasslands, clear lakes and different kinds of wild animals. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty liked Saihanba so much that he made hunting there a royal festival. The royal festival finally stopped in 1860 because of no money and it had to be open to the public. After that, the cutting down of trees and wild fires changed green Saihanba into a grey desert. By the 1950s, the beauty of Saihanba had completely disappeared with only one tree left. The tree is now famous as “the Tree of Honour”.
On seeing the tree, Chinese scientists made up their minds and dreamt of restoring Saihanba. In February, 1962, the plans were made and more than 120 foresters joined 242 local people in Saihanba to begin rebuilding it. Over the next 55 years, those first tree-planters fought against many difficulties to continue planting trees. 1.第二段中“Around the 10th century, the rulers of the Liao Dynasty made it a royal hunting place”表明①Saihanba became a royal hunting place(塞罕坝成为皇家狩猎地)先发生;“Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty liked Saihanba so much that he made hunting there a royal festival”说明④Saihanba turned into a place for royal hunting festivals(塞罕坝变成了皇家狩猎节的地方)接着发生;“The royal festival finally stopped in 1860 because of no money and it had to be open to the public”显示③Saihanba wasn’t closed to the public anymore(塞罕坝不再对公众关闭)随后发生;“After that, the cutting down of trees and wild fires changed green Saihanba into a grey desert. By the 1950s, the beauty of Saihanba had completely disappeared”可知②Saihanba was a desert and disappeared(塞罕坝变成沙漠并消失了)最后发生。所以正确顺序是①④③②。
2.根据第二段描述塞罕坝从绿意盎然变成一片荒芜,以及第三段“On seeing the tree, Chinese scientists made up their minds and dreamt of restoring Saihanba”可知,科学家们决心让塞罕坝恢复原样,所以“restoring”意思是“恢复,带回”,与B选项“Bringing back”意思相符。
3.第四段“Today, the scientists’ dream has come true and beautiful grassland appears again around the tree of honour. Chinese people have successfully changed Saihanba in the past half-century”表明,作者看到塞罕坝如今的变化,认为中国人成功改变了塞罕坝,由此可推断作者对中国人是感到自豪的。
Mr. Dunsmuir, the English teacher, gave the class a writing task. “Write something in some way connected to summer holiday,” he said. “Be as creative as you can. Let your imagination run wild. But,” the teacher added, “make sure you use proper spelling and grammar.”
That night Jennie sat at her desk at home and looked at a blank sheet of paper. She didn’t want to write about her summer holiday as usual. What could she write about, except a cat, a water park, and two weeks of camp? Boring... She’d actually been happy to get back to school.
So she decided to write what she wanted. Not an article at all but a short story. It was about a faraway planet that didn’t have summer — it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have holidays either. The aliens on the planet worked 24 hours a day. They wished they had holidays.
The next morning, Jennie handed in the story, but later that night she lay awake until 3 a.m., thinking, “Why did I do that? Will Mr. Dunsmuir think I ignored (忽视) the task?” English was her favourite class. Maybe she would beg Mr. Dunsmuir for a chance to write another one, the kind he wanted.
But when she got to class the following day, it turned out that Mr. Dunsmuir had already read and graded the articles.
The teacher said, “I’m going to pass back your summer holiday writing in a minute. I’m afraid I’ve got some rather harsh words to say. Almost everyone in class simply wrote an article about his or her summer holiday... Almost everyone.” “This is bad,” Jennie thought, “I’m getting an F, I know it.”
“But,” the teacher continued, “one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked you to be. Jennie Anderson was the only one who got an A on the task.”
Jennie couldn’t believe her ears.
1.Why did Jennie get an A on her writing?
A.Because she wrote one more article.
B.Because she followed her heart bravely.
C.Because she asked the teacher for some advice.
D.Because she introduced a wonderful summer holiday.
2.In the mind map below, which of the following can be put in ▲ ?
Jennie’s experience
A.Writing a story; Afraid B.Returning to school; Glad
C.Begging a chance; Worried D.Making a decision; Surprised
3.In what tone (语气) was the teacher saying the underlined sentence?
A.Angry. B.Satisfied. C.Patient. D.Cheerful.
4.Which can be the best title of the passage?
A.A Boring Story B.A Different Writing Task C.A Strange Planet D.A Strict English Teacher
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.A 4.B
【导语】本文讲述老师布置暑假创意写作任务,全班都写常规假期内容,只有Jennie勇敢发挥想象力创作了外星短篇故事,最终获得全班唯一A的故事。
1.倒数第二段原文:“one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked you to be. Jennie Anderson was the only one who got an A”,Jennie拿到A,是因为她没有按常规套路写作,勇敢遵从自己内心、大胆发挥创意。
3.划线句子:“I’m afraid I’ve got some rather harsh words to say”,老师此时在批评全班作品缺乏创意,语气严肃严厉,对应Angry。
4.全文围绕一次与众不同、大胆创新的写作作业展开,最佳标题为“A Different Writing Task”。

“Peter,” said Wendy, “how do we get to Neverland (梦幻岛)?”
“Second to the right,” said Peter, “and straight on till morning.”
“What a strange direction!” said John.
“No, it isn’t,” said Peter. “It is quite easy. You just fly.”
“But where do we sleep?” asked Michael.
“You don’t sleep when you are flying,” said Peter. “You just fly and feel happy.”
Soon they were high above the clouds. The stars looked like tiny candles, and the moon below them shone like a silver coin. A soft wind brushed their faces, and the night air smelled sweet and fresh. Wendy held Peter’s hand tightly (紧紧地). “Peter,” she whispered, “it feels like magic.”
Peter laughed. “It is not magic. It is faith, trust, and a little bit of pixie (小精灵) dust.”
“But Peter,” asked Wendy, “are you a fairy (仙子) too?”
Peter laughed. “No, I’m a boy. I just never grew up.”
Tinker Bell, the tiny fairy, flew around them. Her wings shone like rainbow glass. She dropped golden dust on the children. Their bodies felt light as air.
“Now think of a happy thought!” said Peter.
Wendy thought of spring flowers. John thought of a new sword. Michael thought of his pet dog. Up they went, sailing over London. The city lights shone far below like little bright jewellery. Big Ben’s clock face also shone softly in the distance.
Suddenly, Michael felt scared. “I’m falling!” he cried. Tinker Bell quickly flew to him and sprinkled more pixie dust onto his shoulders. Peter caught his hand. “Keep thinking happy thoughts!” he said. Michael closed his eyes and thought of his mother’s warm kiss. At once, he stopped falling and rose again. His heart beat fast, but he was safe.
“I can see the sea!” cried John. “And I can see mermaids (美人鱼)!” said Wendy. Far below, silver waves were shining under the stars.
Peter smiled. “Welcome to the second star. We are almost home.”

2.当Michael开始下落时,文中描述“Tinker Bell quickly flew to him and sprinkled more pixie dust onto his shoulders”(①小叮当给他更多仙尘),“Peter caught his hand”(②彼得拉住他的手),“Michael closed his eyes and thought of his mother’s warm kiss”(③他想起妈妈温暖的吻)。因此帮助他重新飞起来的是①②③。
3.划线词所在句中Tinker Bell飞向Michael并向他肩膀上______更多仙尘,结合前文她“dropped golden dust on the children”的描述,可知sprinkled意为“轻轻洒落”。

I was pleased at running away from Silver though I knew he was still somewhere nearby on the island. As I was trying to find a safer place to hide myself, I heard some men talking close by. It was Silver and Tom.
“I want you with me,” Silver shouted, “When we have the treasure, there’s gold for you too.”
“No,” cried Tom, “I told you. I’m not a murderer. You’re guilty, all of you.” Sadly, these were the last words of Tom. It was a gunshot, Silver’s gun.
I moved away quickly and quietly. I ran fast, not thinking about the direction I was taking. Suddenly, I saw something move quickly from tree to tree.
What was it, whether a bear or a man or a monkey? Silver himself appeared less terrible to me now.
As it was getting closer to me, I finally found it was a man. “Who are you?” I asked.
“Ben Gunn,” he answered. “I’m poor Ben Gunn, and I haven’t spoken with a man these three years. Who are you, mate?”
“Jim,” I told him. “Jim, tell me, is that Flint’s ship?” he asked in fear, pointing to the ship which I ran away from.
“No, and Flint is dead. But there are some of Flint’s hands aboard.”
“You see a man... with one... leg?” Ben asked in a nervous voice, with his pale face and scared eyes.
“You mean Silver? He once worked as a cook on the ship.” I added. “Now, he is also on the island to find Flint’s treasure. He wants to kill us and take over the ship.”
“Good boy,” he said, “I was on Flint’s ship when he buried (埋) the treasure, he and six strong seamen. But, when he returned, he himself alone, and the six all died. How he made it, not a man except him could make out. It was a battle, a murder, and a sudden death— him against six.”
Suddenly, the noise of explosions (爆炸) from an island stopped our talking...

Luo Xikun started as a kitchen helper, and later became a food deliveryman (送货员). After changing different jobs since the age of 18, Luo has finally got his dream job—flying drones (无人机) in Shenzhen. For him, this is not just a job but the start of a new life.
Interested in how machines work since he was a child, Luo had always wanted to find a job about machine operation. He often watched people work with machines and wished he could do something like that. When Meituan started to look for drone pilots from its delivery people, he decided to have a try to achieve his dream. He knew it would be hard, but he was ready to take the challenge.
He joined the training program. The training was not easy, but he worked hard every day. After the training, he passed the special test on drone flying and got the qualification certificate (资格证书). His job was not only in Shenzhen but also in other places where Meituan needed drone delivery.
On August 16, 2024, Beijing started its first drone delivery service for goods in the Badaling part of the Great Wall. Luo was sent there to take on this special task. This makes it possible for tourists to get things to cool them down in summer and get help fast in just a few minutes. In the past, it used to take about 50 minutes to walk to the delivery place. Now, with the help of drones, people can get what they need much faster.
To Luo, this task is difficult but exciting. Drone route planning and testing used to be done mostly in cities where the takeoff and landing places have almost the same height. But this route along the Great Wall has a height difference of 200 meters. It means he had to plan the route more carefully and test it many times to make sure it was safe.

B.Because the weather on the Great Wall is too hot in summer.
C.Because Meituan did not provide enough training for him.
D.Because there are too many tourists on the Great Wall.
3.Which is the correct order of events according to the passage?
①Luo was sent to the Great Wall to fly drones for delivery.
②Luo passed the special test and got the qualification certificate.

“Adana, it is time for you to take your place in the village. You shall be the water girl. Each morning we need you to go down to the spring, fill these buckets with water, and bring them back to the village before noon.”
Adana felt proud of being given such an important job. She picked up the yoke (扁担) with the buckets, flung it over her back and walked to the spring. When she arrived, she took a drink and then filled the buckets with clean, cool water. Adana looked at the sun. It was nearly noon, and she knew the villagers were depending on her.
She turned to a water girl from a nearby village and asked, “How long will it take to carry water back to my village?”
The girl thoughtfully replied, “If you go slowly, it will not take very long. But, if you go fast, it will take you all day.”

Adana started off slowly but increased her speed with each step. Soon, she was slowly jogging back toward her village. Halfway home, she stopped to take a little sip of water. “The hound!” Holmes cried suddenly. “Come, Watson! Come!”
We ran quickly across the dark moor. A final, desperate scream broke the quiet, and then came a dull, heavy sound. The night fell deathly silent. Holmes pressed his hands to his forehead and stamped his feet in frustration.
“We are too late,” he said in a low voice, angrily.
Suddenly, we heard a low moan. A man was lying on the rocks. As we walked closer, we saw the dead body of Sir Henry Baskerville. He was wearing his brown tweed suit. “Oh no!” I cried out, feeling my blood run cold. Holmes knelt quickly beside the body, and then suddenly he began laughing. “A beard!” he said. “This isn’t Sir Henry—it’s Selden, the escaped prisoner!”
The truth hit me at once. Sir Henry had given his old clothes to Barrymore, who had secretly passed them to Selden. “The suit killed him,” Holmes said quietly. “Someone gave the hound Sir Henry’s scent—probably the stolen boot from the London hotel—and it hunted the wrong man.”
Suddenly, we saw someone walking towards us. It was Stapleton. Holmes whispered: “Don’t let him see your suspicions.”
“Dr Watson!” Stapleton asked, in surprise. “What brings you out here at this hour? I heard a strange noise and came to check on Sir Henry.” He saw the body and froze. “Is that him?”
“It’s Selden,” I said. “He’s dead.”
Stapleton tried to overcome his amazement and disappointment, “Terrible,” he murmured. “I feared the worst for Sir Henry.”
“Sir Henry is safe,” Holmes said coldly. Stapleton then recognized him and smiled nervously. “Mr Holmes! I didn’t know you were here. Can you solve the mystery of the Hound of the Baskervilles?”
Holmes shrugged. “We cannot solve every mystery. Anyway, I’ll return to London tomorrow.”
With that, we left for Baskerville Hall, leaving Stapleton to walk home alone. Poor Selden lay still on the rocks.

1.Who did White Fang kill that night?
A.A stranger. B.Jim Hall. C.Scott’s enemy. D.San Quentin.
2.What does the underlined phrase “one chance in ten thousand” most probably mean?
A.White Fang would get well easily. B.There were many ways to treat White Fang.
C.White Fang could hardly stay alive. D.White Fang could fight against lots of people.
3.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Jim Hall killed White Fang in the end. B.White Fang was not loved by the family.
C.The surgeon gave up saving White Fang. D.The family would look after White Fang well.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Jim Hall escaped and hurt many people. B.The judge made Hall stay in prison.
C.White Fang protected his family bravely. D.The surgeon tried to save White Fang.

We had a special weird dress show every day. Each class had different colors to wear on Monday. On Tuesday you needed to dress like one or more of your friends.

“Do you need anyone to go to the store?” asked the boy, “maybe to get some milk or other things?”

“That will be fine,” said the boy.
Mrs Jones heated some cooked food she had in the fridge and set the table. She didn’t ask the boy anything about where he lived, or his parents, or anything else that would embarrass (使……尴尬) him. But, son, I hope you will behave yourself from now on.”

The boy wanted to say something other than “Thank you, ma’am” to Mrs Jones, but although his mouth moved, he couldn’t even say that, as he turned at the front of the steps and looked up at the large woman in the door. Then Mrs Jones shut the door. And the boy never saw her again.

Peter caught his hand. “Keep thinking happy thoughts!” he said. Michael closed his eyes and thought of his mother’s warm kiss. At once, he stopped falling and rose again. His heart beat fast, but he was safe.

Then he was chosen to be a special drone flyer for Meituan in a hard competition. Many people wanted the job, but he stood out because of his skills and hard work.

Long ago, Adana lived in a small village in Africa. Everyone in the village had jobs to do, and the villagers depended on one another. When Adana turned ten, her mother called for her.
Adana listened and thought about what the girl had told her. She did not believe the girl and she climbed back up the bank and headed down to the path toward her village. Adana started off slowly but increased her speed with each step. Soon, she was slowly jogging back toward her village. Halfway home, she stopped to take a little sip of water. When she did, she saw that the buckets were only half full. Water had been sloshing (洒出) out along the path as she travelled.
Disheartened (沮丧的), Adana turned back toward the spring. Once again, She filled the buckets with nice, clean water. Then, she walked slowly back toward the village.
When she arrived, her little sister asked, “How long does it take to carry water back from the spring?”
Adana smiled and said, “If you go slowly, it will not take very long. But if you go fast, it could take all day.” Adana’s little sister listened, but thought this was a strange thing to say.
