Last week, I asked a worker to help me repair my old house. On the first day of the job, it was so awful. When he was about to work, he found he had left his tools for work at home, and his car broke down on the way. While I was driving him home, his wife telephoned to say that his son had a bad cold.
He was silent all the way. When we arrived, he invited me to meet his family.
As we walked towards the front door, he stopped at a small tree and touched the tree with his hands. When we opened the door, I was very surprised to see that the worker wore a big smile. It seemed that he changed into another person. He hugged his son and gave his wife a kiss.
After a while, when he walked to the car, I asked him why he had touched the tree.
“Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he answered. “Sometimes I have trouble with my job, but one thing is for sure—it doesn’t belong to my wife or my son. So I just hang the trouble on the tree when I come home every night. Then the next morning I pick it up. However, when I pick it up, I hardly remember what I put the night before.”
That’s true. Sometimes the best way to deal with the trouble is to put it down.

Have you ever seen a pear that looks like a tiny grenade? In northern China, people love a special winter food called frozen pears (冻梨). Their skin is dark, and they are hard as stone. Hold one, and your hands will feel instantly (立即) ice-cold. They may sound scary, but don’t be fooled. Inside, they are sweet and juicy.
In Harbin, a city in northeast China, people leave autumn pears outside to make frozen pears. The freezing weather turns their skin black. Some people may think they look strange, but these pears are safe to eat.
The cold transforms the pear from within. After a little thaw (解冻), the fruit becomes soft and full of juice. You cannot make them in a home freezer because it is not cold enough.
Locals enjoy frozen pears in a fun three-step way. First, leave the pear in cold water for about 15 minutes. A thin layer of ice will form on the skin. Next, crack the ice, take a small bite of the skin, and suck the sweet juice. Finally, peel off the skin and enjoy the soft fruit inside. In many restaurants, frozen pears are served as an appetizer (开胃菜) before meals.

To feed the world’s growing population, global (全球的) agriculture will need to produce more food in the next 50 years than in the past 10,000 years. However, as weather patterns continue to change because of climate change, this task becomes more difficult. Luckily, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, is working on a farming project called Mineral to help solve the problem.
The team spent several years talking with farmers to see what problems they were having and how these problems might be fixed. This led to the invention of “Plant Buggy (植物车)”, a special kind of robot that collects information about crops in detail.
At first, the Buggies were very simple. They were built on bicycles and took pictures with phones. Over the years, they’ve been greatly improved. Now, they move on four big wheels that are high enough to run over rows of plants. The wheels are also strong, allowing them to move through muddy fields. The robots are covered with solar panels (太阳能板) to save energy. They can take pictures of each plant, remember each plant’s location and measure (测量) its size. Studying the plants one by one can save time and money for farmers. For example, if Plant Buggies tell which plants have diseases, farmers can quickly get rid of them before the diseased plants ruin (毁坏) other crops.

Have you ever looked at a simple drawing and felt something deep inside? That’s the magic that Feng Zikai, known as the father of Chinese cartoons, could create. His works show the joy and sadness of life, full of kindness and care.
Feng was born in 1898 in Zhejiang Province. He grew up in a wealthy family, but he didn’t like the traditional ways of study. Instead, he loved art from a young age. Ever felt like your walk to school or the park is a bit… boring? What if you could turn it into a treasure hunt (寻宝)? That’s what many people are doing with the latest trend (潮流): the color walk!
The idea is simple: You pick one color, go for a walk and find as many things in that color as you can.
I first started this last year. Some colors, like green, are easy. You can find it in traffic lights, grass and other things. Other colors, like gold, are hard to find. But I have enjoyed every color walk I’ve tried. When you look for a color, you start to notice things you wouldn’t normally have paid attention to.
Recently, I looked for the color blue while on a walk in the Beijing Olympic Forest Park. I found myself really taking the time to look at things, like the decorations on trees, the details on signs and even the color of people’s clothes as they walked by. In the end, I was amazed by how many blue things I could find, and I felt a real sense of satisfaction.
Xu Gaoyang, a therapist (治疗师) from Beijing, said that color walk fixes your attention on something outside and sets up a small, manageable (易办到的) goal. This keeps you present in the moment (专注当下), making you feel calm and relaxed.

What do you see when you look at abstract (抽象的) art? Can you understand it? Does it look like anything?
Abstract art became popular in the early 20th century. Artists did not want to paint, draw, or sculpt things exactly like they looked. They didn’t want their art to be realistic (现实的). They were more interested in basic shapes and colours.
Picasso is probably the most famous of these artists. He painted and drew in many, many styles. Sometimes he used a lot of blue colours (his “blue period”). Later, he used more red and pink colours (his “rose period”). Many of his other paintings are called “cubist (立体派的)” because they are made of painted squares.
After a long time, Picasso’s paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and things using strange shapes. His work was so strange that many of his workmates didn’t understand it.
Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes and patterns to paint his subjects. His paintings also used strong colours to express feelings. Other artists, like the surrealists (超现实主义者), were interested in sub-consciousness (潜意识). Painters like Breton and Magritte used many symbols in their work. The meaning or subject of their work wasn’t always clear. Dali, another surrealist artist, painted pictures that looked like dreams.
There are still many abstract artists around the world. That’s the way many artists prefer. They want each person to look at art and find their own meaning in it.
1.Why didn’t Picasso’s workmates understand his work?
2.How did Kandinsky express feelings?
3.Do you like Picasso’s paintings? Why or why not?

Learning to play a musical instrument is more than just a hobby for many teenagers. Recent studies show that this activity can have some positive effects on their development. For example, playing music helps improve memory and concentration. This often leads to better performance in school subjects like math and science.
Besides study benefits, music also provides emotional advantages. Many young people find that playing an instrument helps them express personal feelings and relax. 重难语篇练习
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
Since July 2026, a wave of “intangible cultural heritage (ICH) handcraft experience” has swept across China, especially among teenagers. Various ICH projects, such as traditional tie-dyeing, shadow puppet carving, and paper-cutting, have become hot topics on Douyin and Weibo. Museums and cultural centers have opened ICH workshops designed for young people, where students can learn from inheritors and create their own handcraft works.
These workshops offer rich hands-on experiences. In the tie-dyeing class, students fold and bind white cloth before dipping it into natural dyes, creating unique patterns. Shadow puppet carving teaches students to turn leather into lively characters, and paper-cutting helps them make beautiful artworks with just scissors. Each workshop is guided by ICH inheritors, who share the stories and history behind the crafts.
Teenagers have truly benefited from these experiences. Zhang Xiao, a ninth-grade student from Chengdu, shared, “I joined the tie-dyeing workshop during the summer vacation. It was amazing to watch plain white cloth turn into a beautiful scarf with my own hands. I learned about natural dyes and the patience required for traditional crafts.” Another student, Liu Yu, posted on Douyin, “The shadow puppet class opened my eyes to the wisdom of ancient Chinese artisans. It’s not just about making things — it’s about carrying on cultural traditions.”
Parents and teachers have spoken highly of these activities. A father from Hangzhou said, “My daughter used to spend most of her summer vacation playing video games. Now she is crazy about paper-cutting and has made many works for our family. These activities help her develop a real interest in traditional culture.” Teachers added that such experiences help bridge the gap between teenagers and traditional culture, making heritage learning more lively and meaningful.
By the end of July 2026, over 300 museums and cultural centers in 70 cities had set up ICH workshops for teenagers. Cultural experts believe these activities provide an innovative way to pass down cultural heritage. Netizens also expressed their support, saying, “When teenagers make ICH handcrafts, they are not just creating works — they are becoming inheritors themselves.”

On March 28 and 29, 2026, Zhang Xue’s brand (品牌) “Zhang Xue Motor” won two consecutive SSP category championships at the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) in Portugal, becoming the first Chinese motorcycle brand to achieve victory at this top international event.
In WSBK, the racing motorcycles must be based on mass-produced models (市售量产车型) with limited changes. Beating famous brands like Ducati and Yamaha, Zhang Xue Motor proved that Chinese motorcycles can compete with the world’s best.
The story behind this victory is even more touching. Growing up poor in rural Hunan, Zhang Xue began as a motorcycle repairman and once rode over 100 kilometers in the rain after a TV team to ask them to notice his racing team. Starting his business in Chongqing in 2013 with only 20,000 yuan, he devoted himself to motorcycles and never considered other jobs.
In 2024, Zhang founded “Zhang Xue Motor” with his own name. He decided to develop the engine himself. He believed that without his own engine, he would always depend on foreign suppliers. “We must solve the hardest problems,” he said. His persistence (坚持) paid off—Zhang Xue Motor’s 820RR was born. It is special because of its self-developed engine.
Many young people were touched by his story. Zhang said, “Whether you fail or succeed, if you don’t do it when you’re young, you’ll regret it when you’re old.” His story shows that with passion (激情) and persistence, dreams can come true.
1.Which brand made history at the 2026 WSBK in Portugal?
2.What are the WSBK racing motorcycles based on?
3.How far did Zhang Xue ride after a TV team in the rain?
4.Why is Zhang Xue Motor’s 820RR special?

Nothing Is Impossible
Cachita lived in a crowded apartment building in a busy Caribbean city. The building had a large courtyard (庭院), and it was always noisy. Neighbors sang, chatted loudly on the phone, fixed old cars, played guitar, and even raised parrots on the roof. Cachita could almost never find a quiet place to study.
One day, a new neighbor named Montoya moved in. He was quiet and always alone. He wore dark glasses and used a cane (拐杖). Cachita learned that he was blind, but he made beautiful sculptures. “I see with my hands,” he told her.
Cachita had trouble with math. Her final test was coming, and she felt hopeless. She tried to study in the courtyard, but the noise drove her crazy. She went to the park, but still couldn’t understand the problems. “I hate math. This is impossible!” she cried.
Montoya heard her and offered to help. At first, Cachita was reluctant (勉强的) because she had always depended on herself. But finally she accepted. Montoya turned out to be a math teacher before. He worked with her for a whole afternoon. He explained math problems patiently, using simple examples. He also gave her advice: “If you cannot see a solution, skip ahead (跳过) and come back later.”
On the test day, Cachita felt nervous but remembered his words. She passed with a 95! She ran home shouting the good news. The neighbors decided to throw a party. Each neighbor offered some food—some pumpkins, some beef, some sweet potatoes...Cachita had an idea: “Let’s make a big stew, a caldosa (炖菜), with everyone’s food.”
The party was a great success. The caldosa filled the courtyard with delicious smells. Montoya danced and laughed. He was no longer the quiet stranger. Cachita turned to her mother and said, “I never want to move. This is like a big family.”

After meeting the Old Gentleman, the children’s days at the railway station became full of life.
One afternoon, when they were down at the station, they saw a truck standing on the roadside. It was full of something in sacks (麻布袋). The sacks were marked with the word “Guano”.
“I have seen them!” Peter said. “They are the same sacks on the barge (驳船) that were upset (侧翻) by the river.”
“Yes,” said Bobbie. “And I do believe this. Look at the name—‘Guano’. That’s what was on the barge.”
“So the sacks must go to Oswestry,” said Phyllis. “That’s where the barge was going.”
Just then, they saw the Old Gentleman coming along the platform.
“Look, it’s guano,” Peter went up. “It came off a barge that upset.”
The Old Gentleman looked at the truck seriously.
“Children,” then he said, “I need your help. I want you to go to the river and see if there is any more guano there. Can I trust you?”
“Yes,” said Peter. “Come on.”
They ran all the way to the river. There, they saw the barge, with some sacks on it, and the unlucky bargeman was sitting on the bank, sadly.
“You need help?” Peter asked him.
“Yes. But it’s hard work.”
“We don’t mind hard work,” said Bobbie.
The three children got on the barge and began to lift the sacks in the hot July sun. An hour later, they had got all the sacks off the barge and onto the bank.

Frozen pears have a long history. People in northern China have been eating them for more than a thousand years. Today, they are still loved by locals and tourists. Ugly on the outside, but delicious inside—frozen pears are truly a magical winter treat.

In the 1994 film Forrest Gump, there’s a famous saying, “Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get.” The surprise is part of the fun. Now blind box toys are bringing the magic of surprise to online shopping.
A blind box toy is hidden inside some common package (包装), which cannot be seen from the outside. Most customers for blind boxes are young people aged 18 to 35.

Also, the mystery of the process (过程) attracts people. It’s the most important reason why people buy blind boxes one after another.
However, someone gives a different voice. “With blind boxes, I never know exactly what I’ll get. I would feel unhappy if I didn’t get what I was hoping for or got the same one I already have, which was also a waste of money,” said Matthew,18, who studies in a senior high school.
Love it or hate it, opening a blind box is a little surprise for our daily lives. When people open this simple little box, they may be unhappy, but they always hope for a better result.

From strawberry fields in California to soybean fields in Illinois, Plant Buggies are learning about crops from sprout (发芽) to harvest, so scientists can find new ways to help understand how plants grow and interact with their environment.
1.Why will more food be produced?
2.What is Mineral?
3.How can “Plant Buggy” get energy?
4.What can “Plant Buggy” do?

Have you ever looked at a simple drawing and felt something deep inside? That’s the magic that Feng Zikai, known as the father of Chinese cartoons, could create. His works show the joy and sadness of life, full of kindness and care.
Feng was born in 1898 in Zhejiang Province. He grew up in a wealthy family, but he didn’t like the traditional ways of study. Instead, he loved art from a young age. At school, a teacher named Li Shutong encouraged him to follow his dream. Li taught Feng to draw things from real life, not just to trace (临摹) pictures. He also said that a good artist needed both skill and good character, which deeply influenced Feng Zikai’s art.
After graduation, Feng worked as an art teacher in Shanghai. Then, in 1921, he went to Tokyo to study Japanese and European art. Inspired by the Japanese artist Takehisa Yumeji, he returned home with fresh ideas for his ink paintings. Back in China, he joined a group of writers and artists. His drawings soon appeared in popular magazines. These works became known as manhua, a type of Chinese cartoon. Feng also designed book covers, and illustrated (给……配插图) books, sharing his ideas about kindness and caring for people.
Feng had a kind heart. He loved all living things, especially children. He believed that children were full of life and spirit.
Next time you go for a walk, give the color walk a try. You’ll realize how colorful our world truly is.

1.What does this passage talk about?
2.What do people look for in the color walk?

Furthermore, being part of a school band teaches students valuable social and teamwork skills. They also build confidence through performing in front of people. As one high school student said, “The first time I played a song in a concert, I was scared. But after receiving applause (掌声), I felt very proud and more confident.”
Then, how to pick a suitable instrument to learn? First, follow your favorite music style and personal interest. If you like soft sounds, you can choose the violin or the piano. If you prefer loud and energetic music, the drums or the guitar may be better. Then, check if the instrument fits your budget (预算) and the space at home, since some instruments are large and expensive. Finally, give it a try before making a decision. This way, you can pick out the most suitable one for yourself.
1.What emotional advantages does playing a musical instrument provide?
2.How did the high school student feel after playing a song in the concert?
3.Which musical instrument would you like to learn? Why?

2.What are the WSBK racing motorcycles based on?
3.How far did Zhang Xue ride after a TV team in the rain?

They went back to the station and told the Old Gentleman what they had done.
“Thank you,” he said. “And now I need your help again. I want you to go with the truck to Oswestry, will you?”
“Yes,” said Phyllis. “But why?”
“Because I believe you can take charge of (负责) it. I want you to see that it gets there safely.”
They all smiled and got into the truck.
