Ask the experts
Peter Falkingham From Joel, age 7
Question: ______▲______
Answer:
To answer this question, we need to know two things: how fast could a T.rex (霸王龙) run, and how fast can a human run. The second one is easy to know. We have lots of information about how fast humans can run because we can watch them doing it. Usain Bolt is the fastest recorded human, and he has been measured (测量) running at almost 28 mph (miles per hour).
Finding out how fast a T.rex could move is harder, because we cannot watch them moving. Luckily, the fossils (化石) can help us. Scientists used the information to build computer simulations (模拟) to find out how T. rexes would have moved. The simulations showed that the top speed of a T. rex could be between 15 and 25 mph.
So could a human outrun a T. rex? Yes. Bolt could outrun a T.rex. But I think when you said “a human”, you meant “an average (普通的) person”. The average human running speed is 15 mph.
Now the answer to the question is even more interesting. Could Bolt outrun a T.rex? Almost certainly. Could you or I? Probably not. So maybe it’s a good thing that there are no more T.rexes, or we could both end up as T.rex food.
19. How fast can Bolt run according to the passage?
A. 28 mph B. 15 mph C. 25 mph D. 40 mph
20. How did scientists find out the running speed of a T. rex?
A. By watching it run.
B. By comparing it with other animals.
C. By measuring its heartbeat during exercise.
D. By using fossils to build computer simulations.
21. According to Peter, it might be ____________ for Joel to run faster than a T. rex.
A. useful B. interesting C. impossible D. necessary
22. Which of the following can we put in the underline ______▲______?
A. How fast can a human run?
B. How fast could Usain Bolt run?
C. Could a human outrun a T.rex?
D. Could we know a T.rex’s speed?
D
Last year, 20 students in London learned maths through AI instead of human teachers. There was no robot at the front of the classroom, just AI programs on students’ computers. Some people think using AI to teach students is a step too far and that students need human interaction (交流) in their lessons. What do you think?
Yes - AI can improve learning
AI can work out difficult problems very quickly. It can find gaps (空白) in a child’s learning and fill them. AI teachers can pay attention to each student and help them with subjects they find difficult. In fact, it is hard for human teachers to do so in a big class.
Besides, AI has already been used to improve online learning and it has already been used in school to support teachers with things like lesson plans. Also, the UK lacks (缺乏) middle school teachers, especially for subjects like computers and languages. Why not let AI teachers fill the gap?
No - students will lose out
A human teacher has a lot of knowledge, experience and ideas, while AI is only as good as the information it learns. Also, how well can AI teach creative subjects such as art and drama, which encourage students to come up with new ideas?
In 2023, the UK Government said AI could not take the place of the relationship that teachers have with their students. Teachers can understand students’ feelings and deal with important problems. If AI takes the place of teachers, students won’t have as many trusted adults to talk to when they are worried about something.
AI teachers can help students learn in new ways, but they cannot fully take the place of human teachers. In the future, we should make good use of AI and learn with the help of human teachers.
23. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By telling a joke. B. By explaining a reason.
C. By describing a scene. D. By using a famous saying.
24. What is one advantage of AI teachers mentioned in the passage?
A. They can encourage students to think of new ideas.
B. They can change how people interact with each other.
C. They can teach subjects that human teachers find difficult.
D. They can help each student with their own learning problems.
25. What is the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.
26. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Are you good at using AI? B. Are AI teachers a good idea?
C. Are teachers happy with AI? D. Are AI teachers popular with parents?

Farming and creativity don’t often go hand in hand, but rice paddy art (稻田画) is turning ordinary fields into pictures. However, you may be asking, “How is the art created from only rice plants?” The secret is to use different kinds of rice seeds (种子). As the plants grow, each type shows a different color, from green to purple, to bring an artwork to life.
Creating rice paddy art takes a lot of steps. First, farmers draw a picture with a computer program. Then, they mark the design on a map of the field. This helps show which kind of rice should be planted in each section. After that, they’re ready to sow (播种)the seeds, either with the help of drones or volunteers.
Rice paddy art in China started in 2010 in Shenyang, showing dragons and Chinese paintings. Then the practice started to catch on in some other places like Harbin and Hangzhou. On October 24,2023, a huge 3D rice field painting in Tianjin set a Guinness World Record Named “Celebrating Harvest, Promoting Harmony”, it covers 50,798 square meters bigger than any other 3D rice field artwork ever around the world.
Rice paddy art is a fun way to bring beauty and energy to the countryside. A great number of tourists come to the countryside to enjoy the new art form. It is a great example of how tradition and creativity can go together to uplift communities.
