In the mythic (神话的) geography book Classic of Mountains and Seas (《山海经》), many gods are shown holding snakes, hanging them around their ears, or having the body of a snake as a mark of their special abilities. As snakes are often found in underground caves, they are often believed to be connected to the dead, who are buried underground, according to Han Ding, an associate professor of archaeology at Henan University. Pieces of pottery found in an old city from the early Shang Dynasty (around 16th~11th century BC), which is now Zhengzhou, have pictures of a human head inside the mouths of snakes. Han added that by placing a human head within the mouths of snakes, people performed a ceremonial (仪式上的) death, allowing communication with their ancestors in the afterlife. From the Shang Dynasty at the latest, people thought the universe was organized in levels, with gods in heaven, humans on earth and the underworld as the land of the dead. People wanted to go beyond these limits and show respect for their ancestors, so they believed the snake had the qualities they were looking for. They observed the snake digging from the earth into the underworld and considered it as a bridge between the living, the dead and the gods. During the Han Dynasty (206 BC~AD 220) snakes were often seen in designs connected to xuanwu, a mythical creature from Chinese stories that looks like a mix of a snake and a tortoise. In later dynasties, snakes appeared less often in cultural relics but remained one of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac (生肖). Having lived on earth for more than 100 million years, the snake has always been part of Chinese culture and life. “Changing from the Neolithic era (新石器时代), snakes served as bridges between humans and gods and finally became a zodiac symbol for the common folk. The cultural significance tied to snakes has only grown richer, continuing into modern times,” said Wang Fang, deputy director of the Jinsha Site Museum in Chengdu. 28. Why are snakes often connected to the dead in Chinese culture, according to Han Ding? A. Snakes are believed to carry the souls of the dead. B. Snakes are buried alongside the dead. C. Snakes live in underground caves. D. Snakes are seen as dangerous creatures. 29. How did people in the Shang Dynasty view snakes? A. As protectors of the underworld. B. As creatures with special powers. C. As symbols of their ancestors. D. As bridges between different worlds. 30. What is Wang Fang’s view on the future of the snake’s cultural importance? A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain. C We were down South, in Alabama—Bill Driscoll and myself—when this kidnapping idea struck us. We selected for our victim the only child of a prominent citizen named Ebenezer Dorset. He was a boy of ten, with red hair. Bill and I figured that Ebenezer would pay a ransom (赎金) of two thousand dollars to get his boy back. But we didn’t know then what kind of boy Red Chief was. We took him up to the cave, and by the time we arrived, I was bleeding from my ear, and Bill had a big scratch on his face. Red Chief had put up a fight like a wildcat. But we finally got him tied up and settled down. That night, we cooked supper over the fire, and Red Chief ate as much as Bill and I did. Then he began to play. He called himself Red Chief and said he was the leader of a band of outlaws (逃犯). He made Bill his horse and rode him around the cave for hours. Bill was exhausted (筋疲力尽的), but Red Chief wouldn’t stop. The next morning, Bill woke up with a black eye. Red Chief had thrown a rock at him while he was sleeping. Bill looked at me and said, “Sam, I’ve had enough. Let’s send the boy home.” But I reminded him of the two thousand dollars we needed. Bill sighed and agreed to stick it out a little longer. That afternoon, Red Chief decided to play a new game. He called it “Black Scout.” He made Bill the prisoner and tied him up with a rope. Then he pretended to be a fierce (凶狠的) Indian warrior and danced around Bill. Bill begged me to help him, but I was too busy laughing. Finally, Red Chief got tired and fell asleep. Bill and I untied him and put him to bed. The next day, Bill and I wrote a ransom letter to Ebenezer Dorset. We demanded two thousand dollars for the safe return of his son. We told him to leave the money at a location and warned him not to call the police. Then we waited for a reply. But instead of getting the money, we received a letter from Ebenezer Dorset. He said he would take his son back only if we paid him two hundred and fifty dollars. Bill and I were shocked. We had expected him to pay the ransom, not demand money from us! We decided to return Red Chief that night. We couldn’t take any more of his actions. When we dropped him off at his house, Ebenezer Dorset was waiting for us. He handed us a bill for two hundred and fifty dollars and said, “________” Bill and I didn’t argue (争辩). We paid the money and left as quickly as we could. As we walked away, Bill turned to me and said, “Sam, I’ve had enough of kidnapping. From now on, I’m sticking to honest work.” I couldn’t agree more. Red Chief had taught us a lesson we would never forget. 31. What does the phrase “put up” most likely mean in this context? A. to increase B. to build C. to offer D. to achieve 32. Which of the following is the most suitable for ________? A. I hope you’ve learned your lesson. B. Thank you for bringing my son back. C. Don’t do this again! D. Here is your money. 33.
