Cultural fairs offer a firsthand experience of traditions, art forms, and culinary (食物的) delights from various communities. I remember attending a cultural fair last year. As I walked through the fair, I was enveloped by the smell of spices from food stalls. One particular stand caught my attention, where a woman was preparing paella, a traditional Spanish dish. As she cooked, she shared with me how this recipe had been passed down through generations, and that her grandmother would make it for family celebrations. Watching her prepare the paella, I realized how food can tell the story of a culture.
At the same fair, I found myself drawn to a booth displaying colorful paintings. One of the artists, a local woman named Elena, had created a series of landscapes describing the rolling hills of our region. As we spoke, Elena recalled, as a young girl, how she would go on weekend hikes with her family, so she would make a quick drawing of what she saw. It made me realize how art can tell the story of a place, of the artist’s soul.
At another booth, I met Maya, a sculptor who used recycled materials to create strikingly beautiful pieces. One of her sculptures was a bird made from old newspapers and bottle caps. She explained how the piece represented her belief in the importance of sustainability, and how even discarded (被丢弃的) items could be transformed into something meaningful.
As the day wore on, the atmosphere at the fair grew more vibrant. The music picked up, and I found myself swept into a lively dance circle with a group of strangers. I remember looking around at the laughter, feeling completely at ease, as if I had known these people for years. At that moment, I realized that cultural fairs do more than showcase art. They bring people together in unexpected and beautiful ways, transcending language, culture, and background.
4. What role can food serve as described in the first paragraph?
A. A symbol of wealth and social status.
B. A tool for trade and cultural expansion.
C. A link between religion and daily practice.
D. A carrier of cultural memory and tradition.
5. Where did Elena draw inspiration for her art?
A. Her childhood experiences.
B. Stories told by her family.
C. Famous museums she visited.
D. Historical events in her region.
6. What does Maya’s story tell us?
A. Art can be a decorative tool.
B. Art can promote positive change.
C. Art must preserve cultural traditions.
D. Art must reflect the artist’s experiences.
7. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To display various art forms.
B. To recommend different foods.
C. To demonstrate traditional customs.
D. To show cultural fairs connecting people.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that as many as 41% of employers were planning on downsizing their workforce due to AI. While that statistic may be concerning, it doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s an approaching employment crisis, according to Till Leopold, the lead author of the report.
Rather, Leopold thinks that it’s an issue of skill upgrading. The report found that 77% of employers were looking at teaching their current workforce to better work alongside AI, while 47% were looking at transitioning employees from declining roles into other roles in the organization.
“The key point is not that we might not have enough jobs,” Leopold says. “The issue is that jobs may look much different.” The jobs most likely to be affected are largely white-collar jobs like clerical (文书的) work that involves using various processes, such as typing and voice recording, for inputting data into computers, which is in line with what has been found in previous editions of the report. New additions include accounting and graphic design jobs, as generative AI models have improved capabilities for both.
Other recent reports support the World Economic Forum’s findings. A survey of chief financial officers conducted by Duke University found 37% of respondents had used AI to complete tasks previously done by employees. 54% were planning on doing so over the next year, including 76% of large firms. “However, in the short run, this will be more about plugging some holes and possibly not hiring someone they would have planned to hire — but not dismissing someone,” said John Graham, the academic director of the survey.
A new study paints a more sobering picture. It said banks could cut up to 200,000 jobs in the next five years due to AI. But despite the findings of the study, author Tomasz Noetzel agreed with Leopold and Graham. “Jobs involving routine, repetitive tasks are at risk, but AI won’t remove them fully. Rather, it’ll lead to workplace transformation,” he said.
8. What does Leopold think is the direction of change in the job market?
A. Many jobs are being degraded.
B. The nature of many jobs will change.
C. People will be out of work in the future.
D. Companies will cut investment in employee training.
9. What will companies do according to Graham’s view?
A. They will undergo a massive wave of firings.
B. They will hire people with advanced AI skills.
C. They may rely on AI instead of adding new staff.
D. They may gradually change their business model.
10. What does “sobering” underlined in the last paragraph mean?
A. Encouraging. B. Alarming.
C. Confusing. D. Relaxing.
11. What is this text mainly about?
A. How AI is reshaping the modern job market.
B. Why companies are struggling to fire employees.
C. How technology is changing ordinary people’s lives.
D. Why more workers are entering the technology field.

A new study has found that hedgehogs (刺猬) have incredibly sensitive hearing. The animals can hear high-pitched sounds that humans, cats and dogs can’t detect, according to scientists. Experts now hope that special noise-making devices could be built to help keep hedgehogs away from roads.
Hedgehog numbers are in decline and cars are a big factor. A 2022 report revealed that hedgehog numbers in the British countryside had dropped by up to 75% in just over 20 years. It is thought that up to a third of hedgehogs are killed by cars when crossing roads. Sophie Lund Rasmussen, from the University of Oxford, England, had the idea to build a sound device that could scare hedgehogs away from roads. However, she needed to know how good their hearing was first.
Researchers worked with 20 hedgehogs from Danish wildlife rescue centres, studying how their brains responded to short bursts of sound. They found there was brain activity when hedgehogs heard frequencies between four and 85 kilohertz (kHz).
Frequency measures how much a sound wave vibrates in one second. Anything over 20 kHz, which is the limit that humans can hear, is in the “ultrasonic” range. Dogs can hear up to 45kHz and cats up to 65kHz. In other words, hedgehogs can hear super high-pitched noises that humans, dogs and cats can’t pick up.
Rasmussen said more research is needed to work out exactly which sounds put off hedgehogs, but once they know they could design a device that gives off an ultrasound noise. This could be attached to cars and lawnmowers to scare hedgehogs away from danger, but not be annoying to humans or most pets.
The test results also raise the possibility that hedgehogs are talking to each other in a high-pitched chatter that is hidden from humans. “Imagine that they’re actually chattering all the time and we just couldn’t hear it,” said Rasmussen.
12. What is special about hedgehogs’ hearing?
A. It is sensitive to the noise.
B. It is worse than other animals’.
C. It detects high-frequency sounds.
D. It helps them to get delicious food.
13. Why is a sound device needed according to the text?
A. To reduce hedgehogs’ deaths.
B. To distract hedgehogs’ attention.
C. To improve hedgehogs’ hearing.
D. To increase hedgehogs’ communication.
14. What can be inferred from the hearing comparison?
A. Cats are the same as dogs.
B. Humans have the best hearing.
C. Hedgehogs have the widest hearing.
D. Hedgehogs are limited to special sounds.
15. Where could the ultrasound device be used?
A. To decrease traffic jams.
B. To scare away other animals.
C. To promote humans’ hearing.
D. To prevent hedgehogs from danger.

As a teacher, my daily routine includes driving to a new school almost every day so I’m usually unable to predict the day’s events, good or bad!
On one particular day, I was teaching in a very difficult class. Some of the schoolboys didn’t finish their homework on time and that really annoyed me. I was managing behaviour all morning and by lunchtime I knew I needed coffee to even consider surviving the afternoon. So on my lunchtime, I drove to a nearby plaza to get a cup of coffee. There I had a wonderful time and forgot the unpleasant experience in the morning. Upon returning to the car, I realized I had locked my keys and my phone inside! I had about 15 minutes to get back to the school which was a good 4-or-5-minute drive away. I considered rushing back, but it was winter, and I thought a dirty fall on ice would only make the situation much worse.
So I ran into a Mcdonald’s which was in the same plaza and asked the man at the counter to call me a cab. The man happened to be the manager of the restaurant. I briefly explained my situation to him, and I could tell by the look, that he empathized. He hurried to the back to use the phone while I paced in the restaurant. I had less than 10 minutes to get back to my school at this point.
The manager returned, only to tell me that the cab company had put him on hold and then the line got disconnected, and that he was now on hold again, but had not yet been able to request the cab yet. My expression, I am sure, began to resemble some combination of hopelessness and fear.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Without a thought, the manager grabbed his coat and offered to drive me to the school.

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. B 11. A

词句猜测题。根据末段画线词sobering后的句子“It said banks could cut up to 200,000 jobs in the next five years due to AI.(研究显示,由于人工智能的发展,银行在未来五年内可能会裁员多达20万人)”可知,这一结果是令人警醒的,sobering应含有“令人警醒的”之意,与选项中的alarming含义一致。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。首段第二句“While that statistic may be concerning, it doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s an approaching employment crisis.(尽管这一数据令人担忧,但这并不意味着即将出现就业危机)”以及在最后一段““Jobs involving routine, repetitive tasks are at risk, but AI won’t remove them fully. Rather, it’ll lead to workplace transformation,” he said.(他表示: “从事程序化、重复性工作的岗位面临风险,但人工智能不会将这类工作完全取代。相反,它将会推动职场模式的变革。”)”可知,全文介绍了AI对就业市场的影响,说明了AI不会造成大规模失业,而是重塑现代就业市。

【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. D

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Frequency measures how much a sound wave vibrates in one second. Anything over 20 kHz, which is the limit that humans can hear, is in the “ultrasonic” range. Dogs can hear up to 45kHz and cats up to 65kHz. In other words, hedgehogs can hear super high-pitched noises that humans, dogs and cats can’t pick up.(频率衡量的是一秒内声波的振动次数。超过20千赫兹(人类能听到的极限)的声音都在“超声波”范围内。狗能听到高达45千赫兹的声音,猫能听到高达65千赫兹的声音。换句话说,刺猬能听到人类、狗和猫听不到的超高音调的噪音)”可知,刺猬能听到的频率范围比人类、狗和猫都广,即刺猬的听力范围最广。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“This could be attached to cars and lawnmowers to scare hedgehogs away from danger, but not be annoying to humans or most pets.(这种设备可以安装在汽车和割草机上,把刺猬从危险中吓跑,但又不会让人类或大多数宠物感到厌烦)”可知,超声波设备可用于防止刺猬遭遇危险。

【答案】Dear Sir or Madam,
I am Li Hua, a senior high school student and a regular user of your TalkTrails app. I’m writing to share some of my experiences and offer a few suggestions.
I started using TalkTrails half a year ago because I wanted to improve my spoken English. The AI tutor’s feedback and scoring system were very helpful, and I felt more confident about pronunciation and sentence patterns. However, when I attended my school’s English Corner, I found it hard to keep up with native speakers’ natural speed, slang, and changing tones.
To make the app even more effective, I suggest adding recordings of authentic conversations with different accents and more slang examples.
Thank you for considering my feedback. I look forward to seeing an even better TalkTrails.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】范文
Without a thought, the manager grabbed his coat and offered to drive me to the school. Without hesitation, I followed him into his car and made it back into my classroom with 2 minutes to spare before the bell! Upon arriving at the school, I thanked this man endlessly.
The manager’s calm behaviour and kind nature made me think he was probably a wonderful manager to work for, and also a wonderful human being to have on this earth. This experience makes me realize that out of every seemingly hopeless situation, there is the opportunity for acts of kindness to happen, which can have an unimaginable impact on those who receive them.
