四、阅读理解(本大题共15小题;每小题2分;30分)
A
Is there intelligent(有智力的)life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no,” or “we don’t know.” But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists(存在)somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings(人;生物).
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescope(哈勃望远镜)have shown that there are more than 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has more than 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.”
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes(高倍望远镜)allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or Earth—in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It’s a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other ways, such as radio signals(信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don’t have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”
26. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are ________.

A. There were not any smaller planets.
B. There were not any powerful telescopes.
C. The astronomers were not interested in them.
D. The Milky Way didn’t exist at that time.
29. Why haven’t beings from space visited us yet according to Shostak?
A. They’re afraid of us. B. It’s a long way away.
C. They don’t want to see us. D. They don’t know how to use radio signals.
30. What does the underlined phrase “life forms” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Messages. B. Tools. C. Intelligent beings. D. Radio signals.

In northern Scotland, there is a long, deep lake called Loch Ness. More than 200 meters deep, it is the largest lake in the UK. People say a big monster (怪兽) lives in its dark, cold waters. It weighs more than 1,000 kilos and is at least ten meters long. Some people say it has a head like a horse. Others say it looks like a snake. Many people travel to Loch Ness to look for this strange monster, but only a few people have seen it. At least, they say they have seen it.
The Loch Ness Monster is a famous legend (传说). The first story about a monster in Loch Ness was told over 500 years ago, but the legend of the monster spread widely only in the twentieth century. In 1933, a husband and wife reported that they saw a big monster in the middle of the lake. Since then, a number of people have said that they have seen a monster in Loch Ness. Several people have taken photos, but at least one of them was a hoax (骗局). During the 1960s, a team was formed to look for the monster. They took many photos and made movies, but they were never able to find a monster.
There is no real fact that a monster lives in Loch Ness, but there is also no fact that one doesn’t live. One thing is true about Loch Ness: there are a lot of tourists there.

Do you know that each child in school catches six to ten colds every year? Though there is no cure for colds, there are some suggestions for you to avoid getting a cold.
First, you can avoid catching a cold by practising healthy habits. Begin by eating healthy foods. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink milk and juice. Other healthy habits include getting plenty of sleep at night and lots of exercise.
Next, you should try to avoid contact with the viruses that cause colds. If you can, stay away from large crowds. When people cough (咳嗽) and sneeze (打喷嚏), the cold virus goes into the air. Do not share a drinking cup, fork, or spoon with someone else because that could spread the virus. Washing your hands is also a good way not to catch a cold. The cold virus may be on things like telephones and money. Shaking another person’s hand could even spread the virus. By washing your hands, you can stop the virus from infecting (传染) you.
Follow the suggestions above until doctors find a way to stop the viruses that cause colds.

上文提到外面非常冷,结合“covered with some bits of cloth”可知老人应该是冻得发抖,shaking“颤抖”符合。

A
Is there intelligent(有智力的)life on other planets?
A. astronomers B. farmers C. singers D. drivers
27. What is the best title for Paragraph 2?
A. The Age and Size of Earth
B. Our Galaxy: The Milky Way
C. Why Intelligent Life Might Exist
D. Earth: The Only Planet with Intelligent Life
28. Why was it hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe in the past?
【答案】26. A 27. C 28. B 29. B 30. C

In northern Scotland, there is a long, deep lake called Loch Ness. More than 200 meters deep, it is the largest lake in the UK. People say a big monster (怪兽) lives in its dark, cold waters. A group of swans (天鹅) flew down to a beach where a crow (乌鸦) was jumping around. The crow watched them with disdain (鄙视).
“You have no flying skills at all!”he said to the swans. “All you can do is to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air? No, that’s beyond you. Let’s have a flying competition. I’ll show you what real flying is!”
One of the swans, a strong young male, took up the challenge. The crow flew up and began to show his skills. He flew in circles, performed other flying tricks, and then came down and looked proudly at the swan.
Now it was the swan’s turn. He flew up, and began flying over the sea. The crow flew after him, making all kinds of comments (评价) about his flying. They flew on and on till they couldn’t see the land and there was nothing but water on all sides. The crow was making fewer and fewer comments. He was so exhausted that he found it hard to stay in the air, and had to struggle to keep himself from falling into the water.
The swan pretended (假装) not to notice, and said, “Why do you keep touching the water, brother? Is that another trick?” “No,” said the crow. He knew he had lost the competition. “I’m in trouble because of my pride! If you don’t help me, I’ll lose my life...”

第三段提到“The crow flew after him, making all kinds of comments (评价) about his flying. They flew on and on till they couldn’t see the land and there was nothing but water on all sides. The crow was making fewer and fewer comments. He was so exhausted that he found it hard to stay in the air, and had to struggle to keep himself from falling into the water.”,对应事件a“The crow followed the swan and got into trouble.”;第二段提到“One of the swans, a strong young male, took up the challenge.”,对应事件d“The swan accepted a challenge of performing flying tricks.”;第五段提到“The crow knew he had lost the competition. ‘I’m in trouble because of my pride!

My Teachers Are Volunteers
When school is over every day, our teachers will be traffic safety volunteers at the crossing near our school. With flags in their hands, they put on red vest to ensure students’ safety. Although summer is hot and winter is cold, our teachers are always on duty. Hard work pays off. Over the years, students have never had a traffic accident. I think traffic safety is a common topic everyone talks about everyday. But there is still some people who don’t have strong sense of traffic safety.
