It was a warm Saturday morning, and the sun shone brightly on the community basketball court. I was teaching a group of teenagers how to play basketball. Most of them were beginners, so I started with basic skills in the training.
To help them relax, I asked each person to speak out their favorite sport and repeat what others had said. A quiet girl named Lily surprised us all by speaking clearly and remembering every detail.
Later, during a practice game, I noticed Lily staying far from the ball. I passed her the ball and encouraged her to shoot. She caught it but froze, looking anxiously (忧虑地) at the basket. “______” a boy shouted.
She took a deep breath, stepped forward, and threw the ball. It didn’t reach the basket, but everyone clapped for her effort. After the game, she came to me and said softly, “I was afraid of failing in front of everyone.” I told her, “On this team, courage is more important than success. Trying your best is what truly counts.”
From that day on, Lily’s confidence grew quickly. She practiced harder than anyone else. She wasn’t the most skilled player, but she became the most determined (坚决的) one. By the end of the season, she had not only scored her first basket but also earned everyone’s respect. She was no longer the shy girl afraid of making mistakes. She was Lily, a true and valued member of the team.

Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa. It is also the second largest freshwater lake in the world. It is very important because it helps to feed the longest river in Africa, the Nile. The lake furnishes water, food and electricity for the people in several African countries.
Unluckily, Lake Victoria is in trouble. It is becoming smaller. In Uganda, there are power stations (发电站) at the lake’s outlet (出口) to the Nile. These stations make electricity and also help to control how much water is in the lake. The water level used to be high, but it is now falling. There are a few reasons why this might be happening.
One reason could be the dry weather. The area has had very little rain in recent years. The dry weather means there is less water in the lake.
However, some experts think the real problem is the power stations. Many people think the stations are using too much water from the lake. There have been calls for the stations to manage their water use more carefully to help the lake’s water level recover.
This problem makes us think: How should people live with nature? We need nature’s water and power, but we must not use too much. If we take more than nature can give, it will cause problems in the end.

11. Which of the following can take the place of “furnishes” in the text?
A. saves. B. provides. C. Carries. D. Fights.
12. Why is the dry weather a serious problem for Lake Victoria?
A. Because it is a clear sign of climate change. B. Because it makes the water in the lake less.
C. Because it makes the power stations stop working. D. Because it is the only reason why the lake is getting smaller.
13. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. The dry weather is the only problem of Lake Victoria. B. Power stations are managed well in recent years.
C. Power stations’ overuse of water is Lake Victoria’s real problem. D. New electricity ways are found in African countries.
14. What can we know about Lake Victoria?
A. It’s a freshwater lake. B. It’s becoming bigger. C. It’s far away from the Nile. D. It’s the world’s largest lake.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The History of Lake Victoria B. The Relationship Between Lakes and Rivers

Learn to Be Thankful
Helen Keller once mentioned in her book: “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—They must be felt with the heart.” I think being thankful is one of those beautiful things.
It is important to be thankful because it helps us see the good in our lives. I’m thankful for my parents, who work hard to give me a happy life, and my teachers, who patiently teach me knowledge. I’m also thankful for the challenges that help me grow.
Learning to be thankful has changed me a lot. I no longer take things for granted. Instead, I always try to see the bright side. This feeling makes me happier and kinder. I start to help others more, passing on the love and kindness I have received.
