My name is Ahmed. I'm from Egypt. Last year, I had the chance to study in Canada for six months. It was my first time 11 a Western country, and I learned many valuable lessons about cultural differences.

Another interesting thing was 18 . In Canada, people often say "sorry" and "thank you" many times a day. They also hold doors open for strangers. In Egypt, we are also polite, but in different ways. I learned that 19 cultures have different ways of showing respect.
By the end of my stay, I felt much more comfortable. I made good friends and even learned to love poutine, a Canadian dish! This experience taught me that although we come from different 20 , we share the same human feelings. I hope to visit more countries in the future.

第二部分 阅读理解(共三节,满分30分)
第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分)
根据短文内容,判断正误(正确"T",错误"F")。
Dining etiquette, or table manners, can be very different from one culture to another. What is polite in your country might be considered rude elsewhere.
In China, it's common to share dishes. Food is placed in the center of the table for everyone to enjoy. You should never stick your chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice because it reminds people of incense used at funerals. It's also polite to let elders start eating first.
In France, keep your hands on the table (but not your elbows!) during the meal. Bread is placed directly on the table, not on a plate. It's considered polite to cut cheese with a knife and place it on your plate, not eat it directly from the cheese board.
In Thailand, people eat with a fork and spoon. The fork is used to push food onto the spoon—the spoon goes into your mouth, never the fork. It's also important not to leave food on your plate, as this wastes food and insults the host.
In Mexico, it's polite to wait until the host says "Buen provecho" (enjoy your meal) before starting to eat. Hands should be visible above the table, not in your lap. Finishing everything on your plate shows that you enjoyed the meal.
Learning about these differences helps us show respect when we dine with people from other cultures. When in doubt, watch what locals do and follow their example.
21. In China, sticking chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice is considered polite.
22. In France, bread is usually placed on a small plate, not on the table.
23. In Thailand, people use the fork to put food into their mouths.
24. In Mexico, guests should wait for the host to say "Buen provecho" before eating.
25. The passage mainly introduces different dining customs around the world.
第二节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)

My name is Mei Ling. I'm from Singapore, a multicultural country where different cultures live together. Last summer, I visited my cousin in a small town in the United States. It was an eye-opening experience.
Before my trip, I thought I knew a lot about American culture from movies and TV shows. But I soon discovered that real life is quite different. In Singapore, we are very careful about saving face. We avoid saying "no" directly because we don't want to embarrass others. In America, people are much more direct. They say what they think openly.
One afternoon, my cousin's friend asked if I liked the hamburger she made. Honestly, I found it too salty. But instead of saying "no," I said, "It's very interesting!" She looked confused and asked, "Do you like it or not?" I felt embarrassed. Later, my cousin explained that Americans prefer honest answers. They don't see honesty as rude.
Another difference was personal space. In Singapore, we often stand close when talking. But in America, people keep more distance. The first time I talked to my cousin's neighbor, I stepped closer, and she stepped back. I felt hurt, thinking she didn't like me. Later, I learned about personal space zones in American culture.
By the end of my visit, I understood these differences better. I learned to be more direct when answering questions and to respect personal space. My cousin also learned about Singaporean customs from me. We both grew from this experience.
Now I believe that cultural differences are not problems—they are opportunities to learn. When we understand each other's cultures, we build bridges of friendship.
31. Where is Mei Ling from?
A. The United States. B. Singapore. C. China. D. The UK.
32. What does the underlined word "embarrass" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. 使尴尬 B. 使高兴 C. 使惊讶 D. 使放松
33. Why did Mei Ling feel hurt when talking to her cousin's neighbor?
A. Because the neighbor was rude.
B. Because she didn't understand personal space differences.
C. Because the neighbor didn't like her.
D. Because she couldn't speak English well.
34. What did Mei Ling learn from her experience?
A. American culture is better than Singaporean culture.
B. She should never visit America again.
C. Cultural differences can help us learn and grow.
D. It's better to stay in your own country.
35. Which word best describes Mei Ling's attitude toward cultural differences?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Indifferent. D. Confused.

Around the world, people celebrate birthdays in many different ways. These celebrations tell us a lot about a culture's values and traditions.
In China, the birthday person often eats long noodles. The noodles symbolize long life, so you should eat them without breaking them. Many Chinese families also eat red eggs, which represent happiness and good luck. For older people, the 60th birthday is especially important because it completes a full cycle of the Chinese zodiac.
In Mexico, the piñata is a popular birthday tradition. A piñata is a colorful paper container filled with candies and toys. The birthday child is blindfolded and tries to break the piñata with a stick while others sing and encourage them. Breaking the piñata represents overcoming challenges and being rewarded.
In Denmark, people fly a flag outside their window to show someone in the house is having a birthday. Gifts are placed around the child's bed while they are sleeping, so they see them when they wake up. In some parts of Denmark, they also have "breakfast in bed" for the birthday person.
In Jamaica, birthday celebrations often include flour throwing. Friends and family cover the birthday person with flour. This tradition started in Africa and represents blessings and good fortune. After the flour throwing, everyone dances and celebrates together.
In many Western countries, birthday cakes with candles are common. The number of candles represents the person's age. Before eating the cake, everyone sings "Happy Birthday" and the birthday person makes a wish and blows out the candles. If all candles go out with one blow, the wish will come true.
These different birthday traditions show that although we celebrate in different ways, the meaning is the same—showing love and appreciation for the person on their special day.

Making friends from different cultures can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Here are some tips to help you build friendships across cultures.
◆ Be open and curious. Show genuine interest in your friend's culture. 41 Ask about their festivals, food, and daily life. People appreciate when others want to learn about their background.
◆ Share your own culture. Friendship is a two-way street. 42 Share stories about your traditions and customs. Cook a dish from your country for them. Teaching others about your culture helps them understand you better.
◆ Be patient with communication. Language barriers can be challenging. 43 If you don't understand something, ask politely. Don't pretend to understand when you don't. Your friend will appreciate your honesty.
◆ Respect differences. 44 What is normal in your culture might be strange in theirs. Don't judge quickly. Instead, try to understand why they do things that way. Remember, different doesn't mean wrong.
◆ Celebrate together. Invite your friend to celebrate your festivals. 45 Join them for their important celebrations too. Sharing special moments creates lasting memories and deepens your friendship.
Building cross-cultural friendships takes time and effort, but the rewards are worth it. You'll gain a friend for life and learn so much about the world!

But Yuki was patient and encouraged me. Finally, I made a good one! We ate together and she told me about Japanese food culture. I learned that making mistakes is okay when learning something new.
