Helping Charities, Helping Ourselves
Charity is like a ray of light, it can light the way for those who are in the darkness. Among so many charities, I want to introduce UNICEF best.
UNICEF is a powerful champion of children’s rights around the world. UNICEF is making great progress to create a better world for children. For example, it provides clean water and food, education and healthcare to children in need.
I’m ready to help UNICEF by donating money or working as a volunteer. Now, I’d like to send clothes and books to them. What’s more, I want to work as a volunteer and sign up for teaching in the mountain areas when I grow up.
We’re lucky to have charities like UNICEF. A little help from it can make a big difference to the world. I strongly believe that everyone can give a helping hand and make the world a better place.

In late March, 2025, 22-year-old Wu Miao finished her volunteer service with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Bolivia.
As a student at Huazhong Agricultural University, she saw a UN Volunteers job posting in May 2024 and she decided to apply. Wu said that she loved helping people and making a difference in their lives. She had already spent three years on volunteer projects at her university.
Even with her rich volunteer experience, getting the UN role was not easy. Wu read about the UN’s work, studied a little Spanish and learned about Bolivia’s culture and history. Her hard work paid off, and she finally got the position.

She also used the photography (摄影) skills she learned in college to film interviews (访谈) for the WFP’s social media.
Through her experience in Bolivia, Wu realized that volunteering needs a strong belief and commitment (奉献). “I’m thankful for the chance to come to Bolivia at such a young age to serve this country, and I’m proud of the work I’ve done,” she said. Travelling alone to one of South America’s less-developed countries, Wu showed courage, belief and independence (独立).
38.Why did Wu Miao apply for the job in Bolivia?

B.Because she wanted to help others.
C.Because she needed to give a report about volunteer work.
D.Because she wanted to travel to Bolivia.

五、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答下列问题。注意:每题答案不得超过10个词。
When I joined UNICEF China as a volunteer, I couldn’t wait to help solve some big social problems right away. But at first, my job was only to interview the new staff (员工) about their training. I did what I was told to do, but to be honest, I didn’t feel like I was creating the value I imagined.
After a few days, my fellow volunteers and I were asked to make a video for UNICEF China. In doing so, I was able to work with some experienced staff and learn how they understood their job. Thanks to it, I have learned several important lessons.
First, making a big change takes time. Staff with the longest work experience in UNICEF usually make the most difference. Second, the time we have spent is always worth it, no matter how long it is. For example, it might take ages to help build up one school. Once it begins, it can grow and develop further. Moreover, I find that even the smallest thing we do can be valuable.
Later on, the video was completed. It showed what UNICEF China did. In it, some staff were working at the front line (前线), some were doing paperwork in the office and I was interviewing the new staff. I see that everyone is helping in their own ways, no matter how small the act is. Together, we are making a difference to our society and creating a brighter future for our children.
56.What was the writer’s job at first?
57.What activity allowed the writer to work with experienced UNICEF staff?
58.How many lessons did the writer learn?
59.What kind of work were some staff doing in the office in the video?
60.What can we learn from the writer’s volunteer experience in UNICEF China?
六、缺词填空(共10空;每空1分,计10分)
根据短文内容和首字母提示,在下文空格处填入适当的词使短文完整。在答题卡标有题号的横线上,完整地写出空缺处各单词的正确形式。(每空一词)

When Wu arrived in Bolivia’s capital, La Paz, she faced challenges. La Paz is the world’s highest capital city. The high altitude (海拔) made her feel sick, and the local food upset (使不适) her stomach. But she didn’t give up and quickly got used to the new environment.
When heavy rain caused landslides (滑坡), she jumped into action with WFP. According to Wu, she helped hand out emergency supplies (供应) to families and made sure they received the help they needed.

A.What WFP is. B.Why Wu went to Bolivia.
