In 2015, Brian Peterson, a car designer for Kia Motors, moved to Santa Ana, California, with his wife, Vanessa. There, they often met a homeless man named Matt Faris, who would frequently shout on the street corner, sometimes disturbing their sleep. Initially, Peterson had no interaction with Faris, but everything changed after reading the book Love Does, which stressed the power of love in action. Inspired by the book, Peterson decided to introduce himself to Faris.
In their first conversation, Peterson learned that Faris had moved to Southern California from Kentucky in pursuit of a music career but had fallen on hard times, living on the streets for over a decade. Despite Faris’s rough appearance, Peterson saw beauty in him and felt forced to paint his portrait, even though he hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in eight years. Faris agreed, marking the start of a transformative project.
So Peterson went to establish Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization dedicated to painting portraits of unhoused individuals in the community. He captures each subject’s personality through colors and then sells the portraits, splitting the earnings with the subject. Half of the funds are placed in a “love account”, which helps them to address their personal needs. However, Peterson learned the importance of asking people directly how they wanted to use the money rather than assuming what they need most. For example, Faris used the funds from his portrait to record an album, while another subject, Kimberly Sondoval, used the money to help pay her daughter’s rent.
Over the years, Peterson’s project expanded, leading him to found Faces of Mankind, where artists nationwide paint portraits of the homeless. To date, Peterson has personally painted 41 portraits. His work not only provides financial assistance but also fosters understanding and connection between the buyers and the subjects, with many buyers developing friendships with the individuals they initially overlooked. Peterson hopes his work will continue to change how people perceive the homeless.
24.What inspired Brian Peterson to approach Matt Faris?
A.He saw Faris had artistic talent.
B.He read a book about love in action.
C.He wanted to complain about Faris’s shouting.
D.He intended to found a nonprofit organization.
25.How does Brian Peterson deal with the money he earns from selling the portraits?
A.He donates it to charities.
B.He uses it to expand his project.
C.He sponsors the homeless to buy art supplies.
D.He keeps half and gives the other half to his subjects.
26.What is true about Peterson in Paragraph 3?
A.He believes in giving without accepting.
B.He prefers to decide how the money should be spent.
C.He helps people based on their personal needs.
D.He funds them to develop art-related projects.
27.What would be the best title for this passage?
A.Painting for Homeless. B.Curing Homelessness with Art.
C.Telling the Story of Matt Faris. D.Selling Portraits for Charity.
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.C 27.A
根据第一段中“Initially, Peterson had no interaction with Faris, but everything changed after reading the book Love Does, which stressed the power of love in action. Inspired by the book, Peterson decided to introduce himself to Faris. (起初,Peterson与Faris并无交集,但在阅读了强调爱的行动力量的《Love Does》一书后,一切都改变了。受这本书的启发,Peterson决定向Faris介绍自己)”可知,一本关于行动之爱的书启发Peterson去接触Matt Faris。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段中“He captures each subject’s personality through colors and then sells the portraits, splitting the earnings with the subject. (他用色彩捕捉每位对象的个性,然后将肖像画售出,并与被画者平分所得)”可知,Peterson把卖画像赚的钱自己留一半,另一半给画像中的人。
26.细节理解题。根据第三段中“However, Peterson learned the importance of asking people directly how they wanted to use the money rather than assuming what they need most. For example, Faris used the funds from his portrait to record an album, while another subject, Kimberly Sondoval, used the money to help pay her daughter’s rent.(然而,Peterson明白了直接询问人们希望如何使用这笔钱、而不是假设他们最需要什么的重要性。例如,Faris用他肖像画获得的资金录制了一张专辑,而另一位被画者Kimberly Sondoval则用这笔钱帮助支付了女儿的房租)”可知,Peterson根据个人的需求来帮助他们。
27.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段中“In their first conversation, Peterson learned that Faris had moved to Southern California from Kentucky in pursuit of a music career but had fallen on hard times, living on the streets for over a decade. Despite Faris’s rough appearance, Peterson saw beauty in him and felt forced to paint his portrait (在他们的第一次交谈中,Peterson得知Faris从肯塔基州搬到南加州是为了追求音乐事业,但后来境遇艰难,在街头生活了十多年。尽管Faris外表粗糙,Peterson却看到了他身上的美,并感到非画他的肖像不可)”、第三段中“So Peterson went to establish Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization dedicated to painting portraits of unhoused individuals in the community.(于是,Peterson成立了“圣安娜的面孔”——一个致力于为社区中无家可归者绘制肖像的非营利组织。)”和第四段中“His work not only provides financial assistance but also fosters understanding and connection (他的工作不仅提供了经济援助,还促进了理解和联系)”可知,文章主要讲述了Brian Peterson通过为无家可归者画像来帮助他们。

Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons — for example, economic reasons — why they should be preserved. So, let us assume (假设) that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的) and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.
28.What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?
A.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.
B.Some of them are not attractive.
C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.
29.Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?
A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.
B.Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.
C.No one understands why people speak against new buildings.
D.Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.
30.By “move things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means .
A.choose new architectural styles B.put things in a different place
C.destroy old buildings D.respect people’s feelings for historical buildings
31.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To warn that we should protect cultural relics.
C.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.
D.To admit how the old give way to the new.
【答案】28.B 29.D 30.A 31.C
根据第三段“It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too.(确实有例子新建筑破坏所处的区域,但同样一些老建筑也可以破坏)”可知作者认为一些历史建筑将他们生活的地方破坏了,故选D。
根据第四段“If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves.(如果我们总是复制以前的东西,我们现在还住在山洞里面)”可知,要尊重人们对老建筑的感情的同时,向前进,“moving things forward”意思是“选择新的建筑风格”,故选A。
根据第一段“Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city?(我们应该允许现代建筑建在一个城市的历史地区的老建筑旁边吗?)”
D
“Plant blindness” is caused by a lack of exposure (暴露) to nature and could be cured (治愈) by close contact through activities such as wild food foraging (觅食), a study shows.
According to the study, a lack of knowledge and appreciation of local flora (植物群) results from less time spent with plants and the knowledge and appreciation of it is not an inborn human quality. Due to this, people frequently believe that plants are “less alive” than animals.
Researchers analyzed 326 articles published in academic journals between 1998 and 2020. Most showed people had more interest, paid more attention and were more likely to remember information about animals. There was no conclusive evidence that this was a characteristic that humans were born with; rather, the reduced experience of nature in urbanized (城市化的) civilizations seemed to be the root of the problem. If individuals had regular contact with plants, it was not unavoidable.
The research shows a drop in related experience with plants leads to a cyclical process of inattention. This can be addressed through first-hand experience of edible (可食用的) and useful plants in local environments.
Studies showed it was common for children — especially when young — not to be able to identify many species. Plant blindness was reported in teachers as well as students, particularly in primary teachers who had not graduated in a science subject. Older people had better plant knowledge, which studies suggest was because they were more likely to have nature-related hobbies.
Thirty-five studies found that modernization or urbanization had an impact on plant knowledge. The increased dependence on urban services and a cash economy reduced plant foraging. School attendance and work reduced the time available to spend in the natural environment. These factors also reduced the time spent with family, negatively impacting the passing down of plant knowledge from older relatives to children.
32.What does the term “plant blindness” refer to?
A.Strong dislike for gardening in nature.
B.Sensitive reaction to certain plant species.
C.Lack of interest in and awareness of plants.
D.Inability to see plants because of poor eyesight.
33.What contributes to the belief that plants are less alive than animals?
A.Natural human quality.
B.Poor education on plants.
C.Cultural beliefs from childhood.
D.Limited exposure to plants in nature.
34.Who are least likely to suffer from plant blindness?
A.Older people. B.Young children.
C.Primary teachers. D.Graduate students.
35.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The development of modernization.
B.The factors leading to plant blindness.
C.The impact of urbanization on the family.
D.The spread of plant knowledge at school.
【答案】32.C 33.D 34.A 35.B
根据第一段中““Plant blindness” is caused by a lack of exposure (暴露) to nature and could be cured (治愈) by close contact through activities such as wild food foraging (觅食), a study shows.(一项研究表明,“植物盲”是由于缺乏与自然的接触所致,而通过野生食物采集等亲近自然的活动,这一现象可以得到改善)”和第二段中“According to the study, a lack of knowledge and appreciation of local flora (植物群) results from less time spent with plants and the knowledge and appreciation of it is not an inborn human quality. (研究表明,对当地植物群缺乏了解与欣赏,源于人们与植物相处时间的减少,而这种了解与欣赏并非人类与生俱来的特质)”可知,“植物盲”指的是对植物缺乏兴趣和认知。故选C项。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段中“According to the study, a lack of knowledge and appreciation of local flora results from less time spent with plants and the knowledge and appreciation of it is not an inborn human quality. Due to this, people frequently believe that plants are “less alive” than animals. (研究表明,对当地植物群缺乏了解与欣赏,源于人们与植物相处时间的减少,而这种了解与欣赏并非人类与生俱来的特质。因此,人们常常认为植物“不如动物那样具有生命力”)”可知,认为植物不如动物那样具有生命力是由于人们与自然中植物的接触有限。故选D项。
34.细节理解题。根据第五段中“Older people had better plant knowledge, which studies suggest was because they were more likely to have nature-related hobbies. (老年人拥有更好的植物知识,研究表明这是因为他们更可能有与自然相关的爱好)”可知,老年人拥有更好的植物知识,最不容易受到植物盲的影响。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Thirty-five studies found that modernization or urbanization had an impact on plant knowledge. The increased dependence on urban services and a cash economy reduced plant foraging. School attendance and work reduced the time available to spend in the natural environment. These factors also reduced the time spent with family, negatively impacting the passing down of plant knowledge from older relatives to children.
Most of us avoid being beginners. It can feel uncomfortable and embarrassing — we naturally prefer to feel capable and in control. 36 By choosing to start something new, you open yourself up to a world of unexpected benefits.
First and foremost, beginning again builds your resilience (韧性). When you’re a beginner, you make lots of mistakes. 37 This can be frustrating, but each time you rise, retry, and advance slightly, you build resilience to meet challenges.
38 As an adult, you might get used to being the “expert” or the one who knows the answers. But stepping into a beginner’s role can change this situation. Being a beginner forces you to accept that you don’t know everything, which reminds you that learning is a continuous journey and that everyone, no matter their age or experience, can learn from others.
Moreover, starting as a beginner also sparks creativity. When learning something new, you often come across new problems and have to find different ways to solve them. This process of trying, failing, and trying again from different angles stimulates your brain, enhancing your problem-solving skills. 39
Finally, remember the feeling when you first successfully understood a complex idea in a new language? 40 It boosts your confidence and reminds you of your own potential.
So the next time you feel a little uncomfortable about being a beginner, remember that it’s not a sign of weakness, but an opportunity for growth. Embrace the awkwardness of being a beginner. You might discover a brand new version of yourself.
A.In doing so, it teaches you to think outside the box.
B.You might hit the wrong notes, or trip over your own feet.
C.Yet, what if this very discomfort holds hidden advantages?
D.You have to ask questions, listen to others, and accept help.
E.Additionally, being a beginner encourages open-mindedness.
F.This newly-learned language also introduces you to a new culture.
G.That feeling of achieving something new is extremely worthwhile.
【答案】36.C 37.B 38.E 39.A 40.G
36.根据前文“Most of us avoid being beginners. It can feel uncomfortable and embarrassing — we naturally prefer to feel capable and in control. (我们大多数人都避免成为初学者。这可能会让人感到不适和尴尬——我们天生更喜欢感到自己有能力且能掌控一切。)”可知,本段先描述了人们通常对成为初学者的消极感受。接着后文“By choosing to start something new, you open yourself up to a world of unexpected benefits. (通过选择尝试新事物,你会迎来一个充满意想不到好处的世界。)”则转而指出开始尝试新事物可能带来好处。因此,中间的空处应起到转折的作用,引出下文的积极论述。C选项“然而,如果这种不适感本身就隐藏着优势呢?”与前文的消极感受形成转折,并引出后文说它可能带来益处,符合语境。故选C。
37.前文“When you’re a beginner, you make lots of mistakes. (当你是个初学者时,你会犯很多错误。)”提到了初学者会犯错误。后文“This can be frustrating, but each time you rise, retry, and advance slightly, you build resilience to meet challenges.
39.前文“This process of trying, failing, and trying again from different angles stimulates your brain, enhancing your problem-solving skills. (这个尝试、失败、再从不同角度尝试的过程会刺激你的大脑,提升你的问题解决能力。)”说明初学者在学习过程中能激发创造力和提高技能。A选项“这样做,它教会你跳出固有思维模式。”中的“这样做(In doing so)”指代前文描述的“This process of trying, failing, and trying again from different angles”这个过程,“跳出固有思维模式”正是对前文“从不同角度尝试”所达成的效果的总结,与前文衔接自然。故选A。
40.前文“Finally, remember the feeling when you first successfully understood a complex idea in a new language?

Working Together to Protect the Earth’s Ecosystem
Dear fellow students,
Ecosystems, being the very foundation of all life on Earth, provide us with clean air, fresh water and abundant resources. Were they to collapse, human civilization would face an unprecedented crisis.
It is through our daily actions that we can make a difference. Only by reducing plastic consumption, planting more trees and saving water can we preserve the delicate balance of nature. All things considered, every small step counts.
The earth is our only home. Let’s take immediate action. Join us in protecting our ecosystems, and together we will secure a sustainable future for generations to come!

I once believed courage was a gift given to everyone but me. In music class, while others sang aloud without fear and performed like born singers, I kept my mouth closed. I was the quiet one — the one who loved music but only dared to sing alone.
When our music teacher announced a singing contest, my heart sank. “Everyone will have a try,” she said, her eyes full of hope, as if she were giving us a chance rather than a challenge. Around me, my classmates talked excitedly about their songs. I fixed my eyes on my desk, pretending to be calm. Inside, I wished I could hide somewhere.
That afternoon, while I was tidying the music room alone, I found a small note under the piano. It was a piece of score paper, with simple marks on it. On the back, someone had written a line in warm blue ink: “Sing for one heart, not for a crowd.” I had no idea who wrote it or how it got there, but the words felt like a quiet pat on my back, a whisper of encouragement. I put the note into my pocket and kept it as my secret.
At home that night, I practiced in front of the mirror. There was no applause (掌声), only my nervous face looking back. My voice shook at first. I started again and again. Slowly, singing became easier and more natural.
On the day of the contest, the hall was brightly lit and full of people. My hands turned cold and my throat felt tight. When my name was called, I walked onto the stage with heavy steps. Standing there, facing so many eyes, my mind went blank. For a terrible moment, I wanted to run away.
Then I remembered the note in my pocket.
注意:(1)词数应为 150 个左右;
I took a deep breath and gently touched the note in my pocket.

I took a deep breath and gently touched the note in my pocket. The words “Sing for one heart, not for a crowd” echoed in my mind, calming my racing heart. I gathered courage and then began to sing, my voice trembling at first but growing stronger with each note. As I sang, I focused on the feeling of the music rather than the people watching me. I sang for myself, for the joy of music, and for the quiet encouragement that note had given me.
When I finished my song, the hall was filled with warm applause. My classmates were on their feet, clapping and cheering. Even my music teacher had a proud smile on her face. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized that I had done it — I had sung in front of everyone without running away. The note had been a reminder that courage wasn’t about being fearless but about facing fear despite the odds. As I walked off the stage, I felt a newfound confidence in myself, knowing that I had discovered the courage within me all along.

I took a deep breath and gently touched the note in my pocket. The words “Sing for one heart, not for a crowd” came into my mind. I stopped worrying about the crowd and just focused on the music. Slowly, I opened my mouth and began to sing. My voice was not perfect at first, but it soon became clear and steady. I sang for myself, for the love of music, and for the warm encouragement hidden in that small note.
When I finished my song, the hall was filled with warm applause. My classmates were clapping and smiling at me. My music teacher nodded with pride. At that moment, I felt my eyes become wet. I had made it. I realized courage was not the absence of fear, but moving on in spite of it. I walked off the stage with a light heart, knowing that I had found my own voice—and my own courage.
